Title: 2020 NCAA Football Season
Post by: Heismanberg on June 01, 2020, 06:51:27 PM
Clemson WR Justyn Ross, one of the top projected picks for the 2021 NFL Draft, was ruled out for season this afternoon.

He has a congenital spine condition that he was born with that was recently diagnosed after he suffered a stinger in practice.

Huge blow to the NFL Draft and to one of college football's title contenders.

My sister is legitimately scared of mayonnaise she hates it that much. It does seem to upset people.

It's eggs, vinegar and oil. That's it. That's how you make mayonnaise.

If we are in position to take Lawrence there should be no hesitation.

I want Sam to win 10 Super Bowls as a Jet. But if we are 2-14 this year, Lawrence has to be the choice. You trade Sam for whatever you can get and then use the Seattle selection to not make the same mistakes we made with Sam, and we surround him with every ounce of protection and weaponry we can

This is how I feel too.  If we're 2-14 it's because Sam was either seriously hurt or awful.

Agreed. I just don’t see any scenario where Sam is above average or better and we end up picking #1. I could see Sam making strides and us still picking top 5, but not #1.

Now I suppose it sure would be interesting as freak if Sam has an average year and we go 6-10 and Seattle through some combination of COVID horrid luck and injuries ends up giving us the #1 pick. In that scenario I’d gauge what I could get for #1 and for Sam. But I’d have to imagine that we could get at least 3 #1s for Lawrence, and possibly more than that. Which means I’m inclined to keep Sam, trade that pick down into the top 4-6 range and then reap the ridiculous rewards over the next 3 drafts.

I have to believe they try and run football in the spring.

I also have no idea how that impacts the draft and the 2021 college season

If the NCAA moves the season to Spring 2021, the draft will need to be pushed back.  You have to give the franchises more time to evaluate talent.

I think you'd have to push the NFL season back a little bit too.  A reduction of the preseason is almost a lock, but starting training camps in August instead of July would be necessary.
Title: Re: 2020 NCAA Football Season
Post by: d sw0rdz on August 10, 2020, 10:25:30 AM
i think it's too early to try and figure out the ramifications for next season/the draft

we don't even know if the nfl will be able to complete its season this fall/winter. it may get pushed back/cancelled, and that'll obviously affect the timeline of the 2021 nfl season

what happens if a vaccine drops in january. can we start to play sports more reliably then? could an ncaa football season then happen?

if so, draft would get pushed back, nfl season would likely get pushed back depending on the delay/postponement/cancellation of the current upcoming nfl season as mentioned above

i honestly don't think postponements are the end of the world. we are close to a vaccine. we just have to wait and see

Given what I heard rumors of (compound fracture) his stock is going to be decimated. I have no idea where he will be in his recovery process come draft time, but I doubt he's running at that point.

If he enters the draft I'd be curious to see where he does end up getting drafted. My initial guess in the 5th.

I don't think it's a compound. He was sitting on the back of the cart on his own with the foot and leg unsupported, no air boot or anything. He was wearing white socks and they were pristine, if it was a compound injury I suspect there would have been much more intensive medical attention going. A regular break or even a severe dislocation is serious enough to finish his season given the kind of ligament and tendon damage that could happen.

And on the other side of the ball, Minnesota's defense (lost 7 starters from last year) is garbage esp. considering how Taulia & Maryland were shut down last week vs. Northwestern.

BC vs. Trevor-less Clemson.  OSU (QB/OL/CB prospects) vs. PSU (Edge prospects).

Michigan don't look very good. I don't think that Jim will survive another season of mediocrity, especially if it's coupled with once again losing to a far superior Ohio State and making it almost a decade since they last won the rivalry.

Yes to both. We get the Buffalo affiliates so my choice of college games is generally restricted to whichever ones they're showing. I don't really have a college team I could claim to follow, but if I were to pick one it would be Michigan because I always get their games.

It was like Rutgers was playing salugi (an old NYC-based game my folks once described to me growing up) .

-Clemson:  Etienee's a rocket.  BC has talent and hung tough; QB Jurkovec played well;  Zion Johnson (OL)

-Ohio St-Penn St: OSU's overall talent won out. OL (Davis/Myers/Mumford) shined allowing Fields & Olave to play pitch and catch. CB Shawn Wade so-so.  PSU: Docton (WR); QB Clifford's OL didn't give him the time Fields enjoyed. HC Franklin lost - always a good thing.

-Mich. St-Mich.  Nice win for the new coach.

-Florida-Mizzou: nice halftime brawl.
-Auburn-LSU: final score aside, Nix still sucks.
-PAC-12 starts next Saturday.  First chance to see USC QB Kedon Slovis in 2020 :-)

Herm Edwards' ASU Sun Devils have taken it to USC on both sides of the LOS (inc. multiple 4th stops) and are were about to pull off the upset.  Marvin Lewis/Antonio Pierce are Herm's co-DC's and (were) getting the better of USC OC Graham Harrell and forcing Slovis to dink and dunk.  Start packing your bags Clay Helton.  Early 9:00 a.m. PST start.  ASU QB Jayden Daniels is a young skinnier version of Lamar Jackson. USC DL Marlon Tuipulotu is a beast.

edit: USC with a late fluke TD.

Navy gets the gravy and the Army gets the beans aside..and admist today's 'downtown horn blowing' (vis-a-vis the fait accompli of days ago) you missed among other things the most unusual (read: awesome) Liberty Univ. wins at Lane.  It was great--Liberty lined up for a 50+ yard FG only to have it blocked and returned for an (apparent) Va. Tech TD...except that that the Va. Tech coaches 'froze' the Liberty kicker......who promptly nailed the game-winning 50+ yard kick.

Give me Liberty!............or give me Va Tech

Herm Edwards' ASU Sun Devils have taken it to USC on both sides of the LOS (inc. multiple 4th stops) and are were about to pull off the upset.  Marvin Lewis/Antonio Pierce are Herm's co-DC's and (were) getting the better of USC OC Graham Harrell and forcing Slovis to dink and dunk.  Start packing your bags Clay Helton.  Early 9:00 a.m. PST start.  ASU QB Jayden Daniels is a young skinnier version of Lamar Jackson. USC DL Marlon Tuipulotu is a beast.

edit: USC with a late fluke TD.

edit: USC recovers onside kick.  ASU channeling their inner NYJ - major 180-degree choke.

edit: Slovis on a 4th and 9 throws a dime.  USC 28, ASU 27 (0:56 sec. to go).

edit: ASU on the move....hoping to get Luis Zendajas' son in FG range.....USC holds, game over, fluke win.  Still pack your bags Clay Helton.

That's the only game I saw, amazing finish. Went to work and had the Rutgers game on the radio, they actually didn't get embarrassed again. I don't know what's going on with the Big Ten, except for Ohio State the whole league is out of whack.

If he were a freak athlete type of 6'2" 300lbs a la Aaron Donald then it would be interesting, but look at the tape. He's built like a traditional tackle and he runs like it, he just happens to have a decent arm. He might run the odd gadget play in college but he's not going to be anything particularly exceptional and even if he makes it to the NFL, his arm won't.

Who was out running everyone on the field

Was he? He bounced through a couple of tackles by virtue of being so much bigger than his opponents, and then ran without another defender in view until he crossed the line. Were they blocked? Did they just not fancy it? Have a look at this one:

https://twitter.com/UclickTv/status/1314730338791370754

That's not him beating opponents with his athleticism, that's him just being bigger than them. 6'2" 300lbs is an unremarkable size in college and NFL football, I imagine you'll get good odds that he amounts to absolutely nothing at the next level up and doesn't make it anywhere near the NFL.

He’s definitely out-sprinting people in Badger’s clip, but maybe we shouldn’t start making assumptions regarding the athleticism of a player we didn’t know existed until a couple of hours ago.

In fairness that's a serious of clips of defensive failures, when the biggest problem at Michigan under Jim has been their inability to consistently score points. They've had a lot of good defensive players go to the NFL in the last four and a half years, but other than a couple of OK linemen they've produced freak all on offense. The best weapons they've sent to the draft in his time have been Jake Butt and DPJ; that's a pretty sad indictment of a supposed offensive genius. I'm very much done pumping his tires.

I'm not going to be mad if we hire him. We should definitely interview him, because I think that if someone is giving him good players he can still turn them into a good team. I'm definitely not blaming him for not turning Speight and Patterson into stars, but at the same time he played his part in recruitment so he shares blame for their failures.

I'd still be very OK with Jim, he's just not top of my list any more. Day and Pederson have the top two spots now.

They had four high snaps before that decision.  Napier went for the win on third down by throwing it and it was incomplete.

It was genius coaching to take the safety there and he put faith in his defense.

People taking that play out of context will kill him for it.  Their long snapper was useless and it was pouring rain.

My question is why not just punt it rather than take the safety? FG no longer hurts you and it’s not like there was a small amount of time left. But it worked so all is well

...because their long snapper sent it over their punter's head four times in that game.

If he did that again, there's a chance for a scoop in score or recovery 20 yards or closer to the end zone.

Dude had a chance to eat sushi off a nude model on television and is being made to apologize by his university? Ain't no way in hell that dude regrets his life choice. I also assume he banged the model after. So the resultant did or didn't bang probably affects his level of regret in the decision far more than anything else.

"Nyotaimori" or 'body sushi' is a Japanese cultural practice that dates back to the samurai period.  And get off your high horse UNLV by making the QB go through the motions with a 'face-saving' (lame pun intended) apology....like the model doesn't have built-in sushi to begin with?

The last minute of USC-UCLA has been insane.

Rutgers won in OT today after kicking a tying FG at the gun.

I suspect he'll get another job really fast if he even wants to coach next season

So is that what Harbaugh was doing all along? Making sure his team didn't have to play in an unsafe bowl game environment? Someone should have told him he could just decline instead of losing all those games.

Rutgers slipped a Friday night game in without me knowing but my DVR got it. I thought it was going to be a basketball game. Now I just have to find time to watch it.

They just posted the announcement of our friend as a recruit for next year.

Ohio State with the OL and RBs and yet Fields is stinking up the joint thus far (N'western's D notwithstanding).

I had to leave about half way through the third quarter, but fields was terrible to that point. Standing forever in the pocket, poor throws, missing open guys and a lot of throws were high. Not sure either of his INTs to that point were entirely his fault. But he was 9/21 for like 100yards at that point while Pearson was running all over Northwestern and they still were determined to have Fields keep flinging the ball.

I have no idea what motivates him. Maybe winning a title will make him want to come back for a 3rd title. Who knows what he's thinking. I'm not worried about that. I'd be stunned if he doesn't come out.

That's a great shot.  I don't think I've seen true bump and run coverage pre-snap before.

Inversely, reminds me of the Buffalo DB who spooked a split wide Sanchez into a false start.
