Good trade for the Eagles but I would not have been happy giving those picks up for him. We're not at the point where we can gamble the team's future on a 29 year old CB.

I think we'd have been ok handing Slay the 16.5 when you consider any second corner we bring in at a value signing (Darby, Amukamara, Jimmy Smith) is going to have their salary offset by the gains we'll receive from immediately cutting Daryl Roberts worthless derriere. Everyone left is a question mark due to age, injury or both and can likely be had on a one year deal at cost.
Stone Cold Bless Austin and a corner taken in the middle of the draft is your depth at that point. But as Joey Tribiani says, its a moo point.

Lets spend 55% of our remaining cap on a 29 year old cornerback and trade away two draft picks when
Kyle Phillips and Tarrell Basham are starting for us at OLB
Josh Doctson and Quincy Enunwa's corpse are starting for us at WR
amongst our other O line and CB problems
Slay is a short term fix we can't afford right now.
I'd rather give that money to Robby and another o lineman to help Sam.

Darius Slay is not old and he's a great player.
Young depth that can't play is so much better than an elite starter. Right?
Prince Amukamara is two years old than Slay. He is less expensive because he isn't good.

I'm with you on wishing we pursued Slay and worrying about trimming the fat off the roster elsewhere in order to do it (Winters, Roberts).
At this point given the remaining options on the market (Jimmy Smith, the ghost of Aqib Talib, Ronald Darby's faberge derriere), Amukamara imho is the best of a thin lot.

I get the sentiment, and I was actually going to make a joke about all of the amaaaaaaazing talent we've gotten in the 5th round, but 4 of our current starters are 5th round picks are later (Q, Cashman, Bless, Foley).
Again this says more about our lack of talent than anything else, but we need to start somewhere.

We're short on starting talent and depth all over the place and you said yourself that Douglas wants to build the whole team through the draft.
If he didn't want to stay in Detroit who is in the middle of a rebuild why would he want to come here?

We're in a spot where a cornerback could be our draft choice at 11. That's just how bad we are at corner. CJ Henderson at 11 makes more sense than Andrew Thomas right now.
This is not a good CB draft class outside of the few guys that will go in the first round: Okudah, Henderson, and Fulton are great prospects. Maybe we can luck into someone like Jeff Gladney in the second.

We had the worst group of corners imaginable last year and our defense was fine.
Our OL is what got us killed last year.

This is what I think as well.
Yes, corner is important. But Williams figured it out this year. He's just going to have to do it again.
Free agency didn't make feel any more confident in the OL or receiving corps. So dump most of the draft capital into those positions.

Even if that is true, shouldnt Patricia want his best guy working out with “elite” players in hopes he gets better and learns from those guys? The freak kind of coaching job is that?

It's clearly a motivational tactic that he probably learned from Belichick.
Belichick is such a great, accomplished coach that he can excrement on great players and they'll buy into it. Matt Patricia can't do that.
You have to have credibility and sustained success to talk to players like that.

Also, you have to know which players will respond to it the way you want them to, and which ones will respond better to encouragement and an arm round the shoulder. Sounds like Patricia completely misjudged Slay and others - management 101 is know your people and what makes them tick. Guess they don't teach that at rocket science school.
