Sources: Kobe Bryant was on his way to a travel basketball game with his daughter Gianna when the helicopter crashed. Those aboard the helicopter also included another player and parent.

Doesn’t feel real. RIP.
-
Devastating news
One of my favorite athletes of all-time
An inspiring competitor
-
Tough to see someone my age with a family go like that so suddenly. I can't imagine what his family is going through losing both. Makes petty excrement we worry about everyday seem so stupid.
-
Terrible, sad news.
-
“It [didn’t] sound right and it was real low. I saw it falling and spluttering. But it was hard to make out as it was so foggy,” Kocharian said. The helicopter vanished into a cloud of fog and then there was a boom.
“There was a big fireball,” he said. “No one could survive that.”

No doubt in my mind Kobe would’ve been a fantastic coach eventually

freaking crazy, cant believe it

Still can't wrap my mind around the fact that he's gone. One of the greatest competitors I've ever seen in sports. There will never be another Kobe Bryant.
-
Bryant, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were among nine people who died in a helicopter crash Sunday in Calabasas and how does that happen? Kobe is stronger than any helicopter. He didn’t even need a helicopter. For 20 years he flew into greatness while carrying a breathless city with him.
This can’t be true.
Kobe does not die. Not now. Kobe lives into his golden years, lives long enough to see his statues erected outside Staples Center and his jerseys inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He lives long enough to sit courtside at Staples when he’s stooped and gray, keeping alive the memories of two decades of greatness with a wink, maybe even fooling everyone one last time by retiring in a community next to Shaq.

At this point I feel weird for not feeling hurt by this personally.

I've already reached the point of being annoyed that sports radio on my way to work this morning was talking about Kobe and not tonight's hockey.

Depends how much thought you gave him when he was playing.
I hated those Laker teams, not just because of him, but I was glad the year they beat Boston and thought he was good for the game. Being a Dodger fan, he's around the team a lot, so a lot of the players I follow on Twitter and Instagram were pretty emotional. Kobe just sent Belinger a congrats video for his MVP the other night. Now I coach girls the same age as his daughter, so that part hit home a it for me. Obviously we don't helicopter to the games.

Because you didn’t care about basketball during his reign

This is true. I feel like I have similar views over the death of pretty much every famous person though, there are some I like more than others but none whose death would affect me personally or make me want to listen to endless hours of tributes.

Too much of anything after a while turns you off, especially something tragic like this. It's not like it's a developing situation you want to stay with and see what happens. Part of this is it's so sudden and shocking. You can make the case that Michael Jackson was a bigger star but nobody was real surprised when he ODd, still it's all we heard about for a week.
-
They’re playing his final game, 60 points, on ESPN right now

Hearing about his daughter made it much worse for me tbh.

2:16 left and they’re down 10. He has 47. MVP chants as he steps to the FT line.

Idk why but the first time I got sad was watching him dapping up all the scrubs at the end of the bench and how absolutley grateful they were just to be near him

Apparently a million people signed a petition for the NBA to change its logo to Kobe.
The guy is one of the GOATs but he's certainly not the GOAT.
And he's got a little bit of a checkered pass surrounding him
Have no ill will on the dude at all, jsut don't see him deserving as the face of the league

I think the guy is one of the leagues elite players, but I don't think he's in the same category as MJ or that balding freak who thinks Asian lives don't matter

There is a way to honor Kobe without changing the logo. I don’t think that’s wise, otherwise what happens when MJ does? Or Lebron? Or the next all-time great? You just keep changing the logo?
Kobe was sensational, but if he were alive today not one person would suggest changing the logo to Kobe and if they did they wouldn’t be taken seriously. Kobe was a tremendous player, first ballot HOFer and every other accolade you can toss at him. But his death, while terribly tragic should not lead to changes like this.
Love Kobe, he’s in my personal top 5 ever, but that doesn’t mean I feel the logo should be changed to Kobe.

Michael Jordan isn’t the NBA logo
If you asked Jordan and Lebron or even Jerry West who should be the the logo, they’d all say Kobe Bryant.
Honoring his legacy by making him the logo doesn’t mean the league is saying he’s the best ever.
Bunch of freaking losers getting upset about taking the logo away from an old white dude that would get excrement on if he played in this era.

You could make your point without having to belittle Jerry West in a fashion that makes you sound like a tumblrina.

Know absolutely nothing about the dude on the current logo could give two shits
I know most of those white guys would support Jordan being on that logo over Kobe, and Jordan was never on trial for rape
-
The NBA logo should never be changed, it’s perfect as is. Probably the best out of all the major sports.
-

Lack of respect for history and making permanent decisions based on temporary emotion are hallmarks of today's society.

Wow UConn women kept a seat on the bench open with a #2 jersey over it for Gigi during their game last night. She wanted to attend UConn in the future </3

if you don't even know anything about the current logo, then why feel strongly about whether the logo is changed to not? why opine on something you know little about
i have been hurt by the kobe stuff the past few days, but honestly i don't care if he is changed to the logo. i don't feel strongly about it, i don't think it needs to be done to honor his legacy. however, getting butthurt over the idea makes no sense and is kind of dumb lol
do you know that MJ was not a saint either? there are conspiracy theories out there that say his gambling got his father murdered. how true that is is besides the point, with the main point being he was far from a perfect human
you thought michael jordan was the logo?
-
Close your eyes and imagine the most clutch player of his era tragically dying.
Do you see him?
Now close your eyes again and imagine that he’s white.
-
If Lebron died, the same petition would be in place.
dcm doesn’t even watch basketball (too many colored folk) but he wants to chime in with stupid derriere opinions, as always

A Time to Kill is one of my favorites.

by the way, jerry west loves kobe like a son and i'm sure would be happy if kobe was made the logo lol

Which is exactly why I am against it. Kobe is an all time great. But he’s only being suggested as the logo because he died.
FTR I know you are just freaking with DCM at this point which is hilarious. Please continue

I can’t see a logo change but I wouldn’t be surprised if 24 was universally retired. Just, the stature of the player and the nature of the death.
-

Died the other day, so people all feel like they need to do something. Bill Russell, Jerry West, Kareem, Dr J, Bird, Jordan, LeBron, any number of people you could make a case for being the logo.

Yes, yes you are.
FWIW, had you used the phrase "old black guy" as a pejorative I'd have found it just as lame, but you'd have never done that for obvious reasons.

Oh look, an actual non-emotional argument that doesn't invoke race where it doesn't need to be. How refreshing.

One of my favorite things about basketball has always been nobody gives a excrement about your race.

Definitely want to honor Kobe but I’m not sure changing the logo is the way to do it. Not against it but not sure that’s the solution either

It's a minor miracle I know what that means considering my high school Spanish classes consisted of just showing us Selena on repeat.

It's from Breaking Bad, a major scene.
I kind of refrained from posting because I don't really feel anything for Kobe. The fight here is freaking stupid who cares, people grieve over athletes they like or they don't.

TNT guys last night were good. Shaq, Kenny, Ernie and Barkley were joined by Wade, Rick Fox and Derek Fisher from an empty floor at Staples. I'm about done with all the memorials but I watch those guys all the time and wanted to hear them, especially Shaq.

The NBA is reformatting the All-Star Game with an added tribute to Kobe Bryant, whose No. 24 will influence the game's target score in an untimed 4th quarter.
