Title: 2019-20 NCAA Basketball
Post by: Italian Seafood on November 14, 2019, 11:40:03 AM
Since nyjunc isn't here, I'll do this.

Seton Hall hosts Michigan State tonight as part of the Big East-Big Ten challenge, both teams ranked, Myles Powell may or may not play (ankle). Hall is 2-0, a couple easy games at Walsh Gym, St John's might be real this year, Ewing's Georgetown team might be good, Villanova is always good. This appears to be all I have as far as competitive teams until baseball.

I don’t know about St. john’s being “real” this season, they got picked 9th in the Big East, but I think they could be better than what’s expected out of them. Besides the fact Anderson is a real coach, something they’ve needed for a long time, Rasheem Dunn was just declared eligible for this season and he’s supposed to be a bulldog type PG. This team will do as well as Heron and Figueroa play when it boils down to it.

I'm always mixed on St John's. I want them to be good for the city and the conference but not better than Seton Hall. Honestly don't know a lot about them except the little bit I've seen, but I think they can be real competitive this year. Should be good balance throughout the Big East.

Great game, tough loss. Two chances for the Hall at the end, no call. Should be a fun season though, was great to see the Rock filled up and jumping, hockey just doesn't do that.

Those missed calls last night were bullshit, but the team was also very disjointed at the end under the gun.

Better now than March. Myles Powell is an absolute monster.

Yeah, those inbound turnovers didn't help. Still we had the lead late, Myles was gassed, needed that last 3 that front rimmed.

Duke loses at home to Stephen F. Austin  (missus asked if SFA was located in Austin - legit question, no?).

Big East looks like the Hall and then everybody else (tough near win effort vs. MSU; Nova gagged vs. Baylor).

Maui: Va. Tech upsets MSU and then in turn gets crushed by Dayton (who previously crushed Georgia).   Finals: Kansas - Dayton.  Three games in 3 nights: fatigue factor plus KU too big/too deep for UD (Flyers Obi Toppin, player to watch).

Duke was home? I missed it, figured it was a neutral site tournament. Hall plays Oregon tonight in Atlantis.

Have to finish these games, Powell had 30+ and we're getting him the ball with 5 on the shot clock.

Watching my friend on ESPNU, he's assistant coach at UT Martin. They hung with Baylor for a half but getting smoked now. Big size disadvantage.

Seton Hall without Powell and Mamu hosting Maryland tomorrow,  could be bad.

Johnnies lack of shooting is killing them.

On a brighter note, North Carolina's unranked.

Haha yes. I enjoy Ewing as a college coach. I'm guessing not a lot of back talk in practice.

Hall just won, now 3-0, 2-0 on the road in the conference. Don't look now but Rutgers is 3-1 in the Big Ten, having a good year so far. Marist even won a game.

Very encouraging to see a game against an elite opponent in which they were able to get some secondary scoring from guys like Gill and McKnight. Powell is just a monster.

I like how they don't panic. They were down 8 in the second half, Gill later fouled out, they just keep playing. Rik Smits' son is on Butler, #21, they showed Rik at the game. I knew him at Marist, it felt like the old days having to root against Rik vs Ewing in the playoffs every year. I guess he stayed in Indiana all this time.

Great game at MSG, Seton Hall over St. John's 82-79. Trailed by 13 at the half, too many turnovers. Now 6-0 Big East, 4-0 on the road. Powell now over 2,000 points.

First time the program has started the Big East schedule 6-0.

Win against Butler doesn't look as impressive considering they lost to DePaul Saturday, but St. John's isn't bad at all. Anderson is a really good coach.

Big stretch of five games coming up, culminating at Nova on 2/8.

I wouldn't have been surprised if they lost a noon game vs St. John's at MSG, totally expected the bad start. Had trap written all over it and that's always a tough game for us, regardless of how St. John's is playing at the moment. The way they can take a punch on the road, stay in the game and then come back to win is not something I've ever seen from them. Even in the PJ years there would be some games where they got down in a hostile environment and that was it.

Rutgers is 5-3, third in the Big Ten. Looking to see if they will be ranked this week, they have a chance for their first NCAA bid since 1991. I think they haven't been ranked since 1978.

If Heron and Figueroa continue their lackluster play, they have no shot. The rest of the team doesn’t shoot well enough and their talent level is inconsistent. Anderson had to basically clean the mess Mullin left, he has a nice ‘20 class coming in so this year is basically gravy. Funny thing is, the Butler, Providence and Seton Hall games, all could have been wins.

Looks like guinness is right about St John's, unless they turn it around probably NIT. Which, if they make it back to MSG, they have a chance to win.

Yep, they'd stink on ice and Roy's rep juice is indeed sustaining him.

As for Saturday, big game yes  but looking at the bigger picture, Setonia's conf. schedule has 5 of the next 8 games involving ranked teams.  Me (always pull for the locals) hopes Mamukelashvili completely rounds into form and that they bring their healthy 'A' game into the NCAA's (and freak the ghost of rumeal robinson).

Creighton played the percentages by packing the paint and daring the team that couldn't shoot straight to beat 'em.

St. John's obliged by shooting 14/22 from 3 (63.6%) yet barely shot .500 from the foul line (11/20).  Nevertheless a nice win for the Johnnies.

Lots of top-25 loses this weekend.  Dayton (27-2) continues to roll - last reg. season A-10 conference test upcoming on the road at Rhode Island (20-8).

YUGE mis-step for Creighton considering the conference standings.

SHU can clinch the Big East regular season with a split of their final two games.

That's risky when you're playing them in the gym where they practice. I didn't realize they played league games on campus but it worked out for them.

Big win for RU tonight over #9 Maryland. If I had to guess even with their shitty February this puts them over the top to go dancing.

It's going to be hard to keep them out. Good record in the Big Ten, beat Seton Hall. I'd like a win or two in the conference tournament though.

Huge senior night for the Hall tonight. What better way to send Miles out than winning the Big East vs Villanova?

Yuuuuge!

Beating Maryland, Seton Hall, Penn St. and Illini probably gets them in - not that a favorable "19 home / 11 away" schedule didn't hurt
(home: 18-1; road: 1-10, ouch).   Tonight: good luck Hall.

Dayton in the same shoes as Maryland: on the road tonight vs. a desperate Rhode Island (20-8) team on the bubble.

Cool story: 3-star recruit from Kansas receives a hoops scholarship to the Univ. of Vermont. Tragically gets into a car wreck, coma ensues.  Vermont nevertheless honors his scholarship, kid eventually comes back to post a 3.4 index, is given a spot on the Catamounts  basketball team and on Senior Night (last night) gets into a game to score a bucket (props also to SUNY-Albany for being 100% cooperative):

Nice comeback, guys were off more than usual, especially Powell, he never got going. Was getting everyone else open late but was hard for him to really take over the game.

Another good win for St. John's, Georgetown got a tough call at the end vs Villanova.

Hall in a tight one for first place, 32 all at the half. Creighton looks like they will live or die with the 3 ball.

no fans at any tourney games this year.

thats gonna be weird as freak in the finals

like, do they still use confetti and excrement? is the half time entertainment just going to be live from a studio?

not to mention, all these cities are totally fucked after spending money getting ready for the games. i guess at least they can still cancel a lot of excrement?

It would be the most St. Johnsiest of St. John’s things if we beat Creighton and then they cancel the rest of the BET.

Looks like they canceled then Big East at halftime of Game 1 with St John's ahead.

Might as well cut down those nets, guinness77.

Remainder of the MAAC tournament in AC canceled. Marist was already out, not sure the Kung Flu is the worst thing you can catch in AC.

Oh well.
