Title: Assorted 2019 mock drafts
Post by: MBGreen on October 09, 2018, 09:27:39 AM
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2019-nfl-mock-draft-giants-finally-move-on-from-eli-manning-dolphins-find-ryan-tannehills-replacement/

the article has the Jets picking 8th, and taking WR D.K. Metcalf.

I'm not opposed to getting Darnold more weapons, but i would think protecting him would be more necessary.

IMO, order of necessity would be as follows:  OL/PassRusher/OffenseSkillPositions/CB

At 8, there isn’t a tackle worth drafting in that spot.

As of right now, Metcalf would be BPA.

that's what i was afraid of.

I really think we need to load up on the hogs this year.

Yo, Polite was a monster vs FSU.

As of now, pre-combine, I'd be pleased with him or Josh Allen in the top 4-7.
I don't see a LT or WR worth drafting that high, again as of today.

If we end up picking in the top 5, I think we almost definitely need to be looking down to try to recoup a 2nd rounder or just add some more assets. There's still a ton of holes on the team and outside of Bosa being around at our pick I think there's likely to be a bunch of players in a similar skill band that would fill a need for us available at picks 4-5.

Agree, for sure.

It's such an uncommonly rich pass-rusher draft, we could be looking at the same tier of player from #2 to like #12 (minus Bosa like you said). Not to mention non-passrushers like Jonah Williams, N'Keal harry, etc.

Obvious best case scenario is someone looking to trade up for a QB.

Lock, Haskins, Jones and Murray all need to perform well during the pre-draft process.

Someone is going to trade up.
Title: Re: Assorted 2019 mock drafts
Post by: d sw0rdz on January 17, 2019, 04:48:58 PM
this typically happens as the offseason/draft process move forwards. the one position that teams trade up or draft slightly overslot for is usually the QB position, and even in years where the QB prospects aren't top-notch, you'll still find QBs drafted in the top 5

there are QB - needy teams just outside the top 5 that may likely end up taking a QB with their pick. after the musical chairs of FA is done, whoever is left out is going to try and leapfrog those teams to try and get a man at QB. there will be a trade up into the top 5 somewhere. it could reasonably be with us

Same here.
I feel like I've said it a bunch, but Jonah is simply not, at this point in the process, an elite Jake Long/D'Brick-level tackle prospect.
We're a 4-12 team and don't have the luxury of "drafting for need". You take the BPA, the elite prospect, at #3.

Bosa, Quinnen, Josh allen, Ed Oliver are all superior prospects to consider at 3. We clearly want to surround Darnold with as much offensive talent and support as possible, but that doesn't excuse reaching for an offensive player with a premium draft pick. If we're able to trade down that's obviously a different story.

See I think drafting BPA is the luxury.  IMO the long term success of this team is going to depend on if - big if - we can protect the quarterback.  If we get positively gashed by the run next season because we have no talent in the defensive interior, but our quarterback stays clean and healthy for 16 games, I'll be a lot more optimistic about our future than if Darnold ends the season on IR but we've got the next Aaron Donald.

Right now, a good left tackle is substantially more valuable to us than a great defensive tackle.  I'd love to trade down to precisely the lowest spot we can get that tackle, but reaching won't bother me in the slightest.

I totally get it...Darnold IS the franchise and the team seems to be moving forward with that mindset, which is awesome. I've coveted him since that Jan. 2017 Rose Bowl.

My point is, at 4-12 we have needs everywhere. The priority is to keep Darnold healthy, no doubt, but it should also be to stockpile talent, especially elite talent. If I was convinced that the difference between a healthy Darnold and an injured darnold is the difference between Jonah Williams and Beachum, I'd be more agreeable to what you're saying. I just don't think that's obviously the case.

We need talent, period. Skipping over the bluest of the blue-chip prospects to reach for "need", esp with a top 3 pick, is very short-term thinking imo. If Orlando pace was in this draft, yes, I'd sell my soul to draft him to protect Sam.  Jonah Williams-types are available basically every draft. Nick Bosa or Quinnen types are more rare, and when they're available it's only to teams shitty enough to be picking in the top 3-5.

I do like Jonah Williams. If we trade down, yes, he (or whoever is considered the top OT at the time) will be someone I hope we get. I think this whole board agrees with trading down.

Jonah Williams is not a good left tackle prospect.  He is a solid guard.  Not elite like Nelson or even DeCastro.

Jawaan Taylor and Andre Dillard are your top tackle prospects in this group.  Taylor might eat his way out of that spot though.

Quote
After an impressive weigh-in where his measurables were 6’4″, 308, Andre Dillard left a lot to be desired following the opening practice. Even though he weighed more than what many evaluators expected, he still showed that he needed to gain strength and add mass to his frame to hold up at the point of attack. His pass sets are fluid, but at the moment of truth, he constantly got pushed around. Dillard may be a prospect that improves as the week progresses, but his flaws were exposed a bit today.

Agree on the pre combine mocks thing.

1st:  Jawaan Taylor - OT - Florida
3rd:  Hakeem Butler - WR - Iowa State
3rd:  Charles Omenihu - DE - Texas

I traded our 4th to NYG for Olivier Vernon.  With Omenihu and Vernon, the pass rush gets a serious shot in the arm.

Looking to grab an RB or IOL in the 5th.

You would be pleased if we traded #3 for #15, a 2019 5th and a 2020 1st, and then used #15 on a tight end?

This would be an absolutely appalling draft for us. We don't add a premium pick this year and use the one we do have on a position that doesn't really do anything for us.

I like the trade down but not sure about the pick. Reading that Hockensen looks like the real deal but adding a second TE with our first round pick is not the direction I’d go

You think that trading #3 for #15, #143 and Washington's first round pick next year would be good? Regardless of who you take at #15, that is an eyewateringly bad deal for the Jets. Like, fire the GM bad.

We’d have to get back into the second this year to trade back...

Washington might be one of the worst teams in the league in 2019 so that future pick could be great...but not enough of a return to move out of a spot that will land us an elite prospect.

It's a preposterously low valuation of trade capital, especially given a pretty clear precedent.  To move from 6 to 2 for RGIII, Washington gave up their first round pick for three years and a 2nd round pick that same year.  If Duff accepted the above trade and somehow manged to land Nick Bosa at #15, he should still be fired by the end of the 1st round.

I have nothing against two very good tight ends, though.

The edge class is so deep, and at least for now in my opinion, the difference among EDGE guys is a little flat. In this Hockenson mock, Brian Burns and Rashan Gary are both still on the board at 15. If they end up with one of those guys and get a 1st-round pick next year, I'm happy with the draft, even though historically that's pretty awful value in a trade down and we should be able to get more.

Gary has a lot of top 10 hype. Not based on his game tape- more his potential, measurables, and versatility.

I’m not a fan of his at all, and ultimately I would guess that he doesn’t go top 10. But it’s absolutley a possibility

Anything's possible, but I don't think he's good enough. Mid first at best, IMO. I don't think anyone's going to see enough to fall in love with him - he's the kind of player you  settle for and hope he turns out better than you fear he will when you don't have a premium pick.

My baseless speculation at what the draft might look like if we did that trade:

1) Cards - Murray
2) 9ers - Bosa
3) Giants - Haskins
4) Raiders - Josh Allen
5) Bucs - Quinnen
6) Jets - Taylor, Metcalf

Still skeptical that Jets and Giants will trade with each other until it happens, but they might be our best bet. Need to hope that they’re all in on Haskins and don’t want to risk settling for Lock/Jones.

3.  Josh Allen, EDGE, Kentucky
68. Isaiah Johnson, CB, Houston
93. JJ Arcega-Whiteside, WR, Stanford
105. Kahale Warring, TE, San Diego State
196. Oli Udoh, OT, Elon
217. Max Scharping, OG, Northern Illinois

The TDN Simulator is really fun, but is has some strange logic.  There's a ton of skill players (WR & RB) all grouped together in the third and fourth rounds.

3. Nick Bosa, EDGE, Ohio State
68. Elgton Jenkins, C, Mississippi State
93. Mecole Hardman, WR, Georgia
105. Khalen Saunders, DL, Western Illinois
196. Hamp Cheevers, CB, Boston College
217. Max Scharping, OG, Northern Illinois

I’ve spent a good deal of time with TDNs simulator. I do wish that they offered 1st round trade scenarios. Sometimes a deal pops up and other times it doesn’t you can accept or ignore it. Or you could choose to try and trade up at each slot in round 1 by offering picks. If somebody bites you jump up.

I’d love to try out scenarios where we slide down and snag a 2nd or other options.

I don’t believe any one of those players are available at the slot I got them on draft day.

Which is why that draft rocked and I’d be thrilled if the Jets came away with that. The hilarious part is that based on their draft grade system I had a middle of the pack draft. In reality I’d be doing backflips

Predicts the Redskins move up to 3....

Jets get 15, 46, 208. 2020 #1 and #2

Skins get Dwayne Haskins

Jets picks

15 - Burns
46 - Trayvon Mullen (Garrett Bradbury goes at 48)

Interesting deal. I still think that’s going to be less than what we will take. Keeping in mind all future picks are discounted by a round.

In terms of 2019 value, that’s #15 overall, 2 2nd rounders a 3rd rounder and a 6th rounder.

Correct me if I’m wrong but what we paid last year in terms of 2018 value was, #6 overall, 2 2nd round picks and a 3rd round pick.

To me that says we paid more for last years #3 than the Skins would pay for this year’s #3. I’d expect they need to sweeten that deal a little bit more. Possibly with a player (Trent Williams, Brandon Sherff, Josh Norman, Ryan Kerrigan, jonathon Allen are names I might be interested in after doing some digging)

The only upside to that deal is that Washington's 1st next year will likely be pretty early, although predicting the outcome of the NFCE on any given season is a mug's game.

I agree it’s not enough value (as pointed out above) to give up a shot at Bosa, a 5 pick for 1 swap when you get back to back years of 1sts and 2nds. Gives that far from the “only” upside being the Skins probably suck next year.

Sweat at 9 and Gary at 12, but Burns falls to 15? And we're trading down 12 places in exchange for a 3rd and a 2020 first? Of all the things that are not happening, these things are not happening the most.

the market for players is different this year.  The QBs aren't as good in this year's draft...so the compensation might not be as high.  You're probably right, we should get a bigger haul, but i think you need to simmer down your expectations. Because i don't think we or any team will.

Burns fills a major need.  And i expect the Skins to be in the top 10 of the draft next year, so their 2020 1st rd pick, imo, is potentially quite valuable.

Burns is a draft darling like you get every year - his hype has come at just the right time and he'll go long before 15. I've seen him mocked top 3 (q.v. TDN's big board that reuben linked yesterday, which has him at #2).

You may be right that the market isn't so strong for trading a top pick this year, but if that's the case I think we just won't do it. I don't think that Maccagnan would give up on a can't miss pick at #3 in order to add a pick at the arse end of day 2 plus an undetermined pick next year. I know you're all about picking up another first round pick next year but if we stink again this season, Maccagnan doesn't have a next year. He's going to be focused on doing things that make us better right now.

all valid points.

But like all mock drafts, they're subjective and could potentially happen.  Look at how far Aaron Rodgers dropped.  The guy was mocked in the top 2 right up until draft night.  Nobody knows what could happen.  Point being, Burns could go top 3 or top 20.

My preference is to trade back. I know you don't agree...but you like to sleep on a bed of pizza, so we really have to evaluate what state of mind you're actually in.

I would love us to trade back, but it will have to be for a better return than is being offered here. It only makes any kind of sense in this mock because we get Burns, but in the real world that's not actually happening and giving up on all that top end talent for a vague promise of maybe next year is a bad idea IMO.

Again...that's subjective.  Everyone thought Dion Jordan was a top end talent (especially on this board), and ended up getting selected in the top 5 (i believe Miami traded up to get him).   I'm not saying you're wrong, but i'm not saying you're right either.  There's a shitload of pass rushing talent in this draft, not just in the top 10.

Of course it's possible that we would end up with a great player at 15, but it's too big a punt to take without getting a spectacular return IMO. You can't really plan for what's going to happen over 12 picks and say "at least X, Y and Z will still be on the board when it's our pick".

I don’t really want to trade down unless we get a couple of the following things:

- Our 2019 1st is still in the top 6-10 picks

- we pick up a 2019 first

- we pick up multiple future 1sts or 2nds

I have no formula on what I think is fair compensation, but basically I’m saying I don’t want to trade down unless it’s a haul.  We have a guaranteed pick of an elite prospect, and shouldn’t plan on having that type of pick anytime in the near future unless our plan goes to excrement.

My ideal scenario is the Giants trading their two first rounders to move up to 3.  But I never get what i want, so i'm not even gonna entertain it.

The link i posted had us trading back with the Skins.  Is it ideal? No...but it's not the end of the world unless we squander the pick(s).

Everyone keeps saying we're gonna end up with a elite player if we stay at 3.  Nothing is guaranteed. Vernon Gholston looked good at the combine too.

"Williams is ferocious in the middle, and I see him as a top-two talent in the draft class. Between Williams and Allen, the Jets take a solid step forward on the defensive line. Williams has a great first step, and Allen transitions from speed to power very quickly. By taking Harmon late in the third, the Jets get Sam Darnold a hands catcher with size"

ESPN — Mel Kiper
Round 1, No. 3, Edge Josh Allen, Kentucky
Round 3, No. 68, OL Michael Deiter, Wisconsin
Round 3, No. 93, CB Amani Oruwariye, Penn State
"This comes down to Allen or Quinnen Williams for the Jets, and both are going to be impact contributors as rookies. New York's biggest need is on the edge, however, so I lean toward Allen, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year who had 17 sacks last season.
The Jets are in a good spot here, and after trading up for Sam Darnolda year ago, they don't have a second-round pick in this draft. They do have an extra third-rounder from the preseason trade of Teddy Bridgewater (remember when he was a Jet?). Deiter is my second-ranked center, but he has some versatility as he played guard, center and tackle over 54 college starts. Oruwariye is a big, 6-foot-2 corner who had seven interceptions over the past two seasons. You can't count on third-rounders as immediate starters, but Deiter and Oruwariye could compete for spots."

I prefer Kipers mock to McShays by a lot. Harmon would be a great pick with our 2nd 3rd rounder though.

Zach Allen doesn’t strike me as a great fit at 3-4 OLB. I would be more ok with him if we took Josh Allen over Q in that mock.

Much prefer Kiper in the mock above.

Why?
I'd rather have Allen and the subsequent picks are a push for me.

Participating in a mock on another forum with trades...

Ed Oliver
Amani Oruwariye
Elgton Jenkins
Tytus Howard
Mecole Hardman

Haul through 3 rounds so far

I traded back with Oakland to get a second and I moved backed from that pick to get an extra third and fourth.

where did you end up with Oliver? 8?

I traded from 3 to 4.

Oakland gave me their second to move up one spot.

Quinnen, Bosa, and Allen were off the board.  Cardinals GM loves Josh Rosen, which created a different look up to because he obviously wasn’t going QB there.

I like Josh Allen as a prospect, but I don’t have him rated higher than Oliver.  A move back wasn’t difficult for me to make.

Where do you place Oliver's floor?  I love the Aaron Donald comparisons but I'm not sure how realistic that is.

Not sure if this is necessarily his floor, but Sheldon Richardson is a good comparison for Oliver, though Oliver has the ability to be much better than that.

I misunderstood I thought you traded down twice in round one. Not traded Oaks second for additional picks

Did a TDN mock draft this morning....

3. Nick Bosa
68. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
93. Darrell Henderson
105. Tytus Howard
193. Hunter Renfrow
217. Bruce Anderson

If our first 4 went that way, all of JO would be doing freaking backflips

In Jeremiah’s new mock he has the Jets going Oliver at 3 with Bosa off the board at 2 to SF. Quinnen Williams at 4 to Oakland.

Maybe you are on to something

Oliver is a franchise changer.

Quinnen Williams is a great prospect but I’ve always had Oliver ranked over him.

Does he make as much sense if we're committed to a 3-4 though?

Forget the scheme.  Take great players.

Oliver would be dangerous as a shade in the 3-4.

So let me ask, with everything said and done, did anyone's Round 1 mock, whether here or elsewhere, come remotely close for all teams?  I figure that at the end of the day, the best you can hope for is to hit on 8 to 10 teams accurately.
