Dreger tweeting Trotz to the Isles. Huge, if true, on many levels.

Trotz to the Isles might be their biggest signing in the last 5 years. Bigger than a potential Tavares signing.  Trotz is the king of making chicken salad out of chicken excrement.  #gamechanger

Also, not a done deal, and still a fluid situation, but sounds like Isles may have good news on John Tavares as well.

@StapeAthletic
Tavares list just about finalized, it appears.

Leafs, Sharks, Stars are in, as mentioned a couple days ago. Believe the Bruins are in as well.

Canadiens and Vegas not on the list as of now.#Isles will get in there too, of course.

Marty names to the HoF today.

The GOAT takes his rightful place.

On the topic of free agency, would love to see the Devils make a run at Calvin De Haan. Otherwise, I'd be content if they resigned Maroon and then sat out most of the frenzy. I'm not giving JVR the 7 year term he's looking for.

Van Riemsdyk wants 7 years? He's a solid player and he won't really slow down with age because he's already slow and makes his living in the crease, but I wouldn't give him any more than 5.

That's what I read. I know its a little apples and oranges considering their positions, but as Jack Johnson just got a 5 year term, if I'm JVR I'm thinking 7 is pretty in line with the market.

If the Devils could get him for 5 at 37.5 I'd do it.

I don't hate the Johnson deal as much as many seem to. It's a bit risky because he's had such a turbulent time and it has impacted his play, but I think he's still a talented guy and in a better organisation than Columbus I think there's a decent chance he'll thrive. I confess to having a fair degree of sympathy for the guy as well though, so I may be a bit biased.

I'm also not sure that that deal is particularly comparable to a proposed JVR deal, because Johnson will still be able to be a very useful piece if he slows down as he ages and can't play a 200 foot game. A power forward like JVR starts to become a liability if he loses the ability to get to both ends in time to make his game count. I like van Riemsdyk as a player, but 7 years would scare the bejesus out of me.

The wildcard in all this of course is 2020 and the new CBA.

This really sucks, I feel bad for Joe Murphy. He's homeless in Kenora, Ontario. This is a little documentary on finding him walking the streets. It's about 15 minutes. It's worth a watch, it's called, "Finding Murph", it's excellent but sad. I am assuming he had concussion syndrome and more likely, CTE.

i just really enjoyed that picture. i want the sharks to win a title too, we're on the same team here.

Palms is playing with a rocket up his derriere.

Great performances all around last night. Loving this budding chemistry between MarJo and Zacha.

Being in the building last night was a nice way to alleviate some of the Yankee depression, though that prime rib sandwich I had isnt sitting well.

You're surprised that the 6-6-1 Devils lose to the 8-4-1 Islanders and on the road to the 6-6-3 Senators? I feel like you might be overestimating the quality of your team slightly there; the Devils' top line is excellent but the quality falls off somewhat in the bottom six, and they're not getting a lot of offensive assistance from the blue line.

I desperately wanted him to replace Alfie, but he we weren't on his no-trade exception list. I remember having the argument on YDKF or TGG, I forget which, with several Rangers fans who were pissed that they were trading for this nobody poopchute from Columbus that they'd never heard of, and trying to explain to them that just because they were too shortsighted to know anything about sport that happened west of Newark didn't mean that they weren't getting an outstanding player.

It's a shame he never got a ring, if he'd come to Ottawa he just might have.

I hate idiot Rangers fans. His numbers at the end in the playoffs weren't that bad relative to the team. He was a good two way player for the Rangers and was a classy dude. Which is the entire problem. He used to think every player on the Sens was Erik Karlsson, now he just mumbles his way through not knowing a single one. I half expect him to start calling Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley's names during any Ottawa game he's calling.

Eh. He’s not worth a max contract and I’m not trading our first round pick, a player off our top 6 and our 2 best prospects for him. I think we could get Stone for a little less, have some control over him for at least a season and I think he fits the roster better. He’s Tavares with better hands? That’s quite a statement. I’d also rather a player who fits Trotz’s system better. He leads the league in puck retrieving iirc.

You’ll probably kill me for saying this, I’m not sold on his track in terms of being a winning player or his place in the locker room. I certainly don’t watch the Sens as much as you but his reputation isn’t exactly stellar.

Basically you’re looking at our 1st, Beaulivier, Wahlstrom and either Dobson or Wilde and I’m not making that trade. That’s probably what was asked and Lou turned it down, as he should.

I get why you might not want to give up the price to get him, but he is a stunning player to watch - one of the best stick handlers I've ever seen. My comparison was slightly hyperbolic because Tavares is a more complete player, his forecheck and defensive play are stronger but Duchene is the more exciting offensive player IMO.

You're definitely not getting Stone for less than Duchene though. Stone is the prime asset of the bunch.

I don’t doubt that he’s a great player. He’s gonna get paid and he deserves it. I edited my post a little further, Columbus just picked up a 2C, borderline 1 and they’re definitely a better team now, guessing they keep Panarin now, but you guys made out long term in that trade.

For my feeling and for their dynamic, plus in terms of free agency, I prefer Stone. I’d consider that package for him. I still wouldn’t like it bu I would love love love to see Stone play next to Barzal.

One thing Duchene has on Tavares is speed and the way the league is now...speed kills. That’s why, even though he’s been a little off lately, Barzal will be a top 5 player in the league within another season or 2.

I'm not sure he is. There's talk that teams are calling about him, but why would you trade one of your biggest stars when he's in a slump and at his lowest value? Unless the return is completely stupid I can't see it.

Jets trade their 1st round pick, Brendan Lemieux and a conditional 4th rd pick (if the Jets win the cup) to the Rangers for Kevin Hayes.  I like this deal.  He's exactly what we need.

This will take us out of the Stone derby. I hope he stays in the Eastern Conf.

I agree. I smell bullshit on that rumor.

Congrats to MBG, Hayes was kinda under appreciated in NY. Definitely paid enough for him. He’s a prototypical C2 though.

The stupid thing is that we've already got contract value and term and everything agreed with Stone - the sticking point for both sides is signing bonus, because everyone wants their money protected against a stoppage in 2021. Stone won't sign without a front loaded bonus, Melnyk refuses to do it.

thanks dude.  Yeah he's a 2nd line Center....and that's exactly what we needed.  He can distribute the puck, he's fast enough to keep up with Ehlers/Connor, and he plays a 2-way game (so the defensive responsibility is there). Bryan Little should drop to the 4th line now, where he should be.

I’m beginning to think Stone’s going nowhere. I think that’s why the Jets jumped at Hayes.

The asking price for Stone was too high.  I could see if he played Center, but i'm glad we didn't pay that price for a winger.  That's not a shot at Stone, he's an excellent player...just not what we needed.

If Vegas lands him, i'm going to be annoyed.

Schneider suddenly came back strong and Blackburn looked really good when he played, so I get it. We're in last so it is what it is. I'm surprised we didn't get a little more back for a goalie who carried us to the playoffs last year.

I'd have taken a back of pucks for Kinkaid. He's got the worst save percentage in the game and a 3.66 GAA. Granted the blue line in front of him has been excrement, but he's a career backup having a terrible walk year.

I hope for his sake he's able to re-establish some value in Columbus.

Love the Hayes trade for both teams (perfect fit for the Jets, good return for the Rags), but it makes me freaking sick that the spawn of Lemieux will be wearing that disgusting derriere sweater.

Because it annoys me immensely that they were handed such a ridiculously soft expansion draft by the league in order to ensure that Bettman's latest vanity project got a big head start over clubs who've actually spent time and effort building their teams, and because George McPhee is a small minded vindictive shithead.

People I trust are raving about this prospect that came back in the Stone trade but I’m pretty underwhelmed with Ottawa’s haul especially considering he signed an extension already. Stone is only 26. And a 2-way player. I would have offered our 1st, Beaulivier and either Dobson or Wilde if I knew Stone was signing an extension.

Brannstromm is apparently a hell of a talent and our farm is well stocked but not in defense, so it's certainly a nice piece to get back. We just gave up freaking Mark Stone for it though.

Pay Boucher his salary for the remaining 20 games vs don't pay Boucher for the remaining 20 games. What do you think Melnyk's going to do? If he thought he could get away with it he'd fire Crawford as well and install himself as head coach.

Rehashing of the same rumour that has been circulating on and off for the last couple of years. Star player on excrement team wants to win stuff, more at 11.

He's on a long term deal and he's virtually untradeable because no one will offer what he's worth. He's 18 months into an 8 year contract.

Connor McDavid can want the moon on a stick but he's not getting it until and unless the Oilers decide to give it to him. Theoretically he could hold out but I can't see him doing it, that's usually done in contract dispute situations and that's not what's happening here.

For a moment, let's humour the idea that the Oilers would consider trading him. There's no way they'd accept a deal that was just picks; it would require a legit star going back as part of a package that also included a blue chip prospect, at least one first round pick and probably a bunch of other stuff as well. Not many teams could or would deliver that, and even if they could the star going back the other way would almost certainly have a NMC which they would almost certainly activate.

I can't see any realistic deal that would work for both sides.

I'm pissed that both Quenneville and Todd McClellan will be off the market.  Once the Jets get their lunch fed to them by the Blues, conventional wisdom dictates Maurice should be lit on fire shortly afterward.  Will it happen? Probably not, because our ownership group values loyalty over winning.  Obviously, Chipman isn't Melnyk, but he's still made some dumbfuck decisions.

I'm not sure if that's the case.  David Thomson is part of the Winnipeg Jets ownership group and is currently worth 34.5 billion (in American funds). Apparently he's the wealthiest Canadian in the country.  We have the scratch to spend on upper tier coaches.

Personal wealth and sports team finances don't often conflate though, partly because doing so is fraught with complications around revenue sharing and tax liability, and partly because really rich guys don't become and remain really rich guys by pouring money into pet projects. From what I can see with a cursory google it looks like the Jets clear a few million a year as long as they make the playoffs so they could probably afford to dump $6M+ on a coach if they really wanted to, but from the little I know of TN it doesn't seem to be their style to make big flashy moves.

They're very meticulous and calculated in their approach.  I don't believe anything is off the table when it comes to making a splash, but a lot of thought goes into these decisions. This is probably the most sensible approach.  What i don't like is the blind loyalty....like hiring Claude Noel because he coached the Manitoba Moose the previous year.  The same thing is happening with Maurice.  Sure, we're making the playoffs...but it's on talent, not on coaching. If anything, Maurice's system is holding this team back.  We still rely on the dump and chase for freak sakes....what year is this, 1996?

You take a coach like Trotz for instance. The Isles were last in defense last year and goals against average.  This year they're first, and that's after losing their franchise player.

Maurice doesn't bring anything like that to the table.  Plus, he hasn't made any adjustments from last year.  Teams like Dallas and Minnesota were a combined 8-1 against us this year.  Last year we destroyed them both.

EDIT: It's frustrating because the media believes injuries to Buff and Morrissey were the problem.  But Buff came back, and we're still playing like excrement.  It's coaching.

I read somewhere today that Kappo could go #1 as there may be concerns over Hughes' size and durability. They also mentioned that Kappo can play some center. He's also a larger specimen. I don't know a thing about either of these guys, other than that we are getting one of them.  Now just hoping for Tampa to win the whole thing and for Dallas to get to the conference finals.

Jack Hughes is really good but I'm not sure he's a day 1 player, he probably needs to fill out a bit to play center in the big league.

Kakko is more NHL ready IMO, but Hughes is terrifically talented and plays a more valuable position. The only way you'd choose Kakko #1 is if you're already blessed with a lot of quality at center but outside of Hischier I don't think that's the case with the Devils so yes, I agree that Hughes is the pick.

I want the Isles to win that series...but Malkin always wakes up in the playoffs.  I just think the Pens have too much firepower.  I rode Guentzel and his 40 goals to a regular season fantasy draft win last week.

It’s all gravy to me at this point. I didn’t think in a million years we’d get 103 points and finish second. I still think we have a decent chance to win this series. Their defense, which has been better lately, I think is suspect. If Dumoulin misses some games, that would help too. We just have to keep doing what we’ve been doing and try to keep their shots to low percentage chances and not take a lot of penalties. Their PP definitely scares me.
