Maybe we'll have a shot at him with the 6 pick in 2020.

How much of this is Oklahoma's offensive scheme and how much is Mayfield? Pretty good either way.

Mayfield seems to be pretty accurate with his throws. Leads the receiver.

Yeah, his receivers may be open a decent amount of the time, but his ball placement is great. He's also pretty impressive with changing the velocity and arc on throws- he doesn't just constantly throw fastballs.

It's funny how half of you say you don't want a project, but are hooting and hollering for Mayfield.
I absolutely love Mayfields poise in the pocket and maneuverability, but he rarely has to thread the needle into tight windows. Nor does he make any pre-read calls.
I understand I'm calling out things he's not asked to do in this offense, but please explain how Mayfield isn't a project at qb and is worthy of a top 10 pick.
Darnold turned the ball over alot this year but you regularly see him make hard angle throws into tight windows, throwing his recieved open.

When you're talking about draft stock then you're comparing every player with every other player at the position. Insanity's point is pretty reasonable, IMO - people are talking about Mayfield's rising stock and questions about Darnold's performance this season, it makes sense to question who is actually ready for the NFL.

I think most, if not all would prefer Darnold, but obviously its not realistic at this point to believe he is even an option. Not sure why that comparison was brought up.
Mayfield may not have to throw into extremely tight windows constantly, but the majority of his throws are incredibly accurate to make you believe he has that capability. He has flaws for sure, but he has improved every year and presents a lot of positive qualities that you can build an offense around.
With the way NFL teams are incorporating spread offenses, with the right coach (and I believe Morton is that coach for us) I think he can be put in a position to be productive early on while he works on footwork, mechanics and the mental game.

I don’t really see it that way, to me the 2 clear cut best prospects are Rosen and Darnold. Then it’s a discussion of who you like best out of Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen.
Is it possible an NFL team has Allen or Mayfield rated higher? Of course, but I’m not ready to do that with Mayfield yet and I don’t think I’ll change my mind.

Goff

That's fair, but I also think that insanity's point about Mayfield being a project (albeit not on the Christian Hackenberg scale) is reasonable, because there's been so much hype about him this season that it seems possible that a team is actually going to take that leap.
I wonder if there's any truth to the story that's been going round for a few days that Dorsey is in love with Josh Allen. I do recall someone reporting that Maccagnan was a big fan of his as well, so maybe there's smoke there.

Awful post yet again, no one is comparing Darnold to Mayfield
But, I am.
Darnold is currently seen as a top 5 pick, most likely to CLE or NYG.
People are saying Mayfield should be top 10 and possibly top 5.
I don't understand how these players could picked so closely in the draft but have such different skill levels. and I'm asking for someone to explain why they think he should go in a comparable spot to Darnold in the draft.
When I've watched Baker play over the last two years
I see
Leadership
Poise in the pocket
Maneuverability in the pocket
Playmaking
Tenacity
But I don't see
Tight window throws
Throwing the reciever open
Making pre-snap reads
10-15 yard timing routes
These things can be learned in the NFL, but take time. Which would make me think he doesn't deserve to go that high
Isn't this just another hype train based on personality or am I missing something?

The west coast offense is based on timing and accuracy. It's completely different than the spread offense.

I've seen all of that in this game alone. He punked the entire secondary to the left and came back to the right for a big play. His reads and progressions have been spot on.

That's fine but peoole are talking about Mayfield going 1,2, or 3 picks after Darnold so there should be a conversation in terms of how they compare.
If you don't think there should even be a conversation about how Mayfield stacks up against Darnold doesn't that prove the point that he doesn't deserve to go that high?

Throwing the ball to a wide open reciever, while he is outside of the pocket.
What about a tight throw to a reciever from inside the pocket while he's under pressure
Don't get me wrong. I love watching this kid play, But picking him with our first round pick seems really rich.
By comparison Derek Carr had much more under his belt when he came out and he was drafted later in a worse qb class.
-

Yes, but Morton imo has the capability to incorporate spread concepts into his offense... he did it when Petty took over. Baker also has great accuracy.
-
Rodney Anderson is awesome.

Morton uses more Air Raid concepts than WCO in my opinion.

Goff and Carr were Air Raid QBs.
Those concepts are taking over in the NFL. Like I said earlier, Morton uses more Air Raid concepts in the passing game than West Coast.
There are more reads going on in that offense (if the play caller allows it). Geno Smith was also an Air Raid QB, but he wasn't making reads in Holgorsen's offense like Goff and Carr were in college.
Mason Rudolph is another Air Raid prospect that I wouldn't touch in the first round, but he would have tons of value if he fell to us in the second.
-
Orlando Brown is probably the most highly touted prospect in this game and he was getting worked in pass protection. He is an elite run blocker though.
Right tackle suits him better.

I have to assume the Murray play was a trick play where Murray was going to throw it to the one player on the crossing route. But to the short side of the field, that play never had a chance. And like you said, why are you taking it out of Mayfield's hands? Terrible.

I just hate to see criticism and even praise during bowl season by casual fans.
I love that more people are able to watch college football especially when it gets to this stage, but I will never understand the arm-chair quarterbacking/coaching by this kind of fan. They don't know the players, the coaches, the teams, or the conferences.

If you guys don't like that opinion hang out with the 5 people you know that watch the 600 games a year and jerk each other off. I qualified my opinion as this is the only game of his I watched.
My god half the time this is a freaking Pro Football site, we opine on football, the other half we bust each others balls. If you don't like it simple go to a College football site and have fun. In short both of you two bundles of sticks can eat a giant bag of dicks.

Just relax. I know this was at least partially directed at me. I fully admit to not knowing these players well, and you know that. It's a discussion board and I value your opinion.
What do you think of Wims? First time seeing him, and I liked what I saw. Fromm could be a NFL qb someday.

No freak them have your opinion.

If it makes people feel better I haven't watched one second of one bowl game this entire year.

It's my opinion that you're gay.

I was under the impression that was common knowledge accepted as fact.

If I am like Heismanberg or Derek Smells, I would be offended by this as we have only met once this year. If we had banged more than once this year say 600 times, your opinion would be ok in this matter.

Thank you Steve, it's great when I have people sticking up for me.

I always pictured Steves850 as being more than one Steve.

Darnold, Mayfield, Rosen, Jackson....just draft one and lets continue to move in the right direction.

There are many of us. We collectively ghost the freak out of this forum from time to time.

Absolutely. Out of the bunch I like Mayfield the most. I'll admit I've only seen a handful of games and 0 with Rosen.

FWIW, I hadn't really read this thread closely, especially MiamiSuck's posts, so I really don't know who said what. I wasn't really responding to anyone in particular besides Heismanberg's post. Another message board I'm on, not about the Jets, had a thread on this game, and the overwhelming sentiment was Mayfield was overrated.

I'm no college football expert, but to me, Mayfield seems like a great college quarterback who has made some unbelievable plays and has used his charisma, personality, and tenacity to build himself a hype train that is leading him into the first round.
Maybe he will succeed, or maybe he won't, but it reminds me alot of Deshaun Watson, Johnny Manziel, and Tim Tebow.
The top things said about these players were always their character traits. They are leaders, winners, gamers, etc. Rather than their elite skills. I've always shied away from these players for that reason. Do they really have the necessary skills coming out of college to be worthy of a top 10 pick? The most important skill for an NFL quarterback in my eyes is making calls at the line of scrimmage and I have a hard time picking a player so high that has 0 experience in this field.
I know most college offenses don't ask their quarterbacks to make pre-snap reads, but in my eyes it's a huge risk to draft a quarterback at 6 who is never under center, doesn't stay in the pocket, and has no experience with audibles and pre-snap reads. Am I wrong?
Feel free to move this to the draft section if it's more applicable.
-
Now that I know he's white I'm lukewarm on Mayfield.
My draft board has three categories:
-top 5 QB prospects
-guys from Rutgers
-guys I've never heard of
I'll be hard at work between now and April, or whenever the draft is.

I probably won't touch it before the Super Bowl.

Did you know I won that fantasy football league 2 out of the last 3 years, so freak yourself. I know you care you, even if you say you don't.
