Title: Breaking Bad

R.I.P., Walter White. "He will be greatly missed."
Fans of "Breaking Bad" aren't just mourning the end of the heralded AMC drama; they are also mourning the demise of antihero Walter White, husband, father, chemistry teacher, meth kingpin.

Some of those fans — members of the "Unofficial Breaking Bad Fan Tour" Facebook page — decided to purchase an obituary in Friday's Albuquerque Journal.

[Related: Lingering Questions From the 'Breaking Bad' Finale]

"I've been a humongous 'Breaking Bad' fan since the beginning," group leader David Layman told the New Mexico newspaper. "I was actually in the pilot, and putting the obit in the paper was fitting, because the series was based in Albuquerque and it provides some of us some closure."

The obit reads: "Walter White, aka 'Heisenberg,' 52, of Albuquerque, died Sunday after a long battle with lung cancer and a gunshot wound." It noted he left behind wife Skyler, son Walter Jr., and daughter Holly. In lieu of flowers, the obit urged readers to donate to a drug abuse prevention charity of their choice.

Layman's group is hardly alone in their grief over the "Breaking Bad" finale. Sunday's episode was watched by a series-record 10.3 million viewers and dominated Twitter (1.2 million tweets, according to SocialGuide) and Facebook (around 5.5 million posts).

Ironically, much like Walter, Layman is a science teacher with a student named Jesse! Hmm, wonder if he has an RV parked in his driveway, too...

You don't start talking about it.  People can get into it at any time.

The show is very literal.  When the doctor tells him he has 2 years to live, it's not just wasted dialogue.  There is hardly any waste in the show, which is why it's so much better than anything else.  Almost every word of every scene means something.

No filler here.

From Grantland:

Quote
Jeffrey Katzenberg Offered $75 Million for Three More Breaking Bad Episodes
By Mark Lisanti on October 9, 2013 3:30 PM ET
Ursula Coyote/AMC

Just when you've begun to grow your hair out, lovingly buried your dry-cleaned hazmat suit in a Rubbermaid storage barrel in the yard, and finally given up on your insistence that Walter White's semi-triumphant machine-gun-powered standoff was nothing but the dream of a man dying in a snow-encrusted car that would never start on the first magically-appearing-key turn, they pull you back in. (By the dog wire lashing you to the ceiling of the superlab in which you are enslaved. You always forget about that wire until a Nazi tugs on it.) Today at an industry conference in Cannes, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed — and please, steady yourself, this is about to get real — that he was willing to put up $75 million for three additional 60-minute Breaking Bad episodes that would pick up wherever the show ended. Reports Variety:

“I had this crazy idea. I was nuts for the show. I had no idea where this season was going,” [Katzenberg] said, during the keynote session at Mipcom ...

He explained that he had intended to show the extra content as six-minute segments over 30 days online.

“I said (to them), ‘I’m going to create the greatest pay-per-view television event for scripted programming anybody’s ever done,’” he explained.

Indeed, the tidy way in which Vince Gilligan wrapped up his meth opera — an ending Katzenberg, like everyone else on earth, was totally unaware of beforehand — probably made the plan impossible, no matter the Czech-drug-ring-level dollar value. But: three more episodes! Three more hours! At just 50 to 99 cents per installment! Think of all the Huell closure we could have! And Jesse working the pipeline in Alaska! And ... excuse our shouting. This is a lot to process, and it's not easy to reconcile our greedy desire for more Bad with our grudging acceptance that the series is over, forever. This was never going to happen. It all ended as it should have — sorry, Huell, we hope that motel has HBO. It's time to move on ... and e-mail Katzenberg to throw the same money at Mad Men. AMC's looking greedy enough with that one to take it. And we'd all buy that Don Draper's just dreaming the 1970s. He's definitely dying in the front seat of his Cadillac.

So Santa brought me the box set of Breaking Bad for Christmas. The complete works. I've never watched an episode before now.

Watched the first 3 episodes on Christmas night - very late. A  bit slow to start with and I hung with it and it got very interesting

I've now completed series 2 and I'm hooked.

It is frankly the best thing I've seen in years. All the hype is justified. I'm going to try and stretch this out over a couple of weeks but I doubt it.

I also know who Heismanberg is now.

You won't find anything better on Netflix.  I genuinely miss watching it.  There are some great series that have aired since it finished up, but nothing has replaced that greatness yet.

True Detective and Fargo are both excellent, but they are anthologies.  At least Justified is coming back tomorrow night.

Smart choice she made, I think you have something like 62 episodes to watch. That's quite a lot of entertainment. I don't think there's one bad episode, although some people hated "the fly"in season three, I thought it was brilliant.

Do not go back and read this thread at any point we had already seen the entire show. It's not an organic thread, growing with the show. You should be fine spoiler wise then. When you get to Season 3, I am not sure if he did episode by episode of season 1 or 2,  I think you can get an episode by episode breakdown at Hitflix written by Alan Sepinwall.  That would be a pretty cool thing to do. Season 3 is where the show got epic and in my opinion had it's best individual episodes but that's arguable.

I marathoned the first season on AMC leading up to the season two premiere because folks on the old site wouldn't shut up about it.

I was not disappointed to say the least.

No offense, but it was easily one of the better episodes of the entire run. It was never filler, it's a bottle episode and one of the best, if not the best, bottle episodes ever produced by any show. You either appreciate it or you don't, you're in the latter.

Haha...he's been great. We were actually starting to get behind Gus and Mike but drugging the kid is fucked up.

Walt has basically shown no respect to Jessie since day one and whatever Gus' intentions might have started off as, him and Mike actually treated him pretty decent. It's all for selfish intentions of course, but still.

Skyler White night be the most annoying character I've ever come across. I'm sure Anna Gunn won an Emmy or two, but I don't know how to feel about that. I guess she sold it pretty well. In fact, I'd argue Gilligan wrote every female on this show to be ultra annoying.

Yeah, but that doesn't explain the way she waffles from episode to episode. There's no consistency with her character. One episode she's happily laundering his money, the next, she's threatening to take his kids away from him.

She's just so...over the top.

By attempting suicide? Obvious cry for help, but...
Also, where the hell is their daughter most of the time?
She also had very little problem cooking Ted's books a few seasons ago. Who did that protect? She's a very inconsistent character.

After re-watching the series a few times, almost everything she does is justified.

The only thing inconsistent about Skyler are her morals.  It's very believable.

I always thought that she was a pretty real character. She kept getting put in situations where she had to choose between someone she cared about and being a law abiding citizen. I think a lot of people would go back and fourth and drive themselves insane with guilt and rage.

But I agree, dealing with an inconsistent person like her is annoying as freak.

Aaron Paul has really elevated this show. You can talk about Bryan Cranston all you want, and it's certainly deserved, but the Jessie Pinkman character is an amazingly drawn out character. He is very complexed on many level. Gilligan and Paul deserve a ton of credit, I would have never see that in the earlier seasons.

The Hank Schrader character is another one I'm very impressed by. I don't know the actor'a name off the top of my head but man, he is a great character. He's supposed to be the guy you don't root for, but he is a funny guy, a great detective and has a real personable side to everyone, I wanted to cheer when he punched Walt in the face. Even his wife I've come around on a bit.

The Mike character....one of the best supporting characters on a show. I was sad when he was killed.

She got back on the drugs because of Jessie although she pushed the heroin on him. I always gave her the benefit of the doubt because she was clean until she met Jessie.

The two episodes we watched last night were insane. Couldn't stop laughing through Walt's "confession," and Jessie asking Walt to admit he's all for himself were crazy scenes. Hank's wife had a pretty strong scene too. The Hank character I hope got the credit it deserved while the show ran. Hes a really great thought out character where on most shows most viewers wouldn't give a rat's derriere about the brother-in-law Detective.

Your last sentence is basically the synopsis for the entire show.

I'm going to say it now, regardless of the last 5 episodes...this is the best show I've ever watched. It would have absolutely killed me to wait months between seasons. I don't know how you guys did it.

And, although they are two entirely different shows and this one ran 5 seasons and not just two, this is one of the only shows I've thoroughly enjoyed every season of. The BBC Office is the only other show I can think of off the top of my head where I can also say that. The show just never loses momentum, and it's not a bunch of bullshit situations or lazy unrealistic writing like I see on a ton of shows. Kind of why I don't watch a lot of shows.

Walter White is the biggest piece of excrement there is. The only redeeming part about him at this point is that he left his kid at the fire department.

I feel so bad for his son: finds out his dad is a drug dealer/murderer, his mother knew about it, and that his uncle is dead in the span of less than a few hours. Unbelievable.

The way Gilligan writes this show is so impressive that every scene is intense. I knew there was no way they were leaving with him, I just couldn't believe he took the kid.

My wife said something about how fucked up it is the Uncle is going to end up with all the money and the meth operation, but I don't think it's fucked up. Any other writer (cough, cough Kurt Sutter, for example) could portray these guys to be the redneck mongoloids they look like or make them some cartoonish charicuture of what they're "supposed" to be or act like, but he's made them smart, calculated, ruthless and...very believable. Best writing I've ever seen on a show. Period.

Saying that, definitely the best show I've ever watched and I have to say we were both satisfied with the way it ended. It's kinda nuts because we didn't watch it in real time but it's a weird feeling...like I'm happy I've watched it now but it sucks that it's over. That kind of stinks. I never even heard of him before I watched this but his performance is so real. I said it on the last page, he was really underrated and his character was the kind of guy you usually wouldn't root for but on a show this well written, it killed us when he got killed. Mike, too.

Yeah, I definitely get that. But the way he talked to Skylar, the way he was with Jessie with the ice cream (after he knew he ratted him out to the Feds) and the way he was with Mr. White showed there was some depth to him. I mean, haha, I'm not nominating him for a Nobel Prize just saying in that gang of degenerates he was the only one with feeling. He popped a kid and a woman in less than a second so he's obviously a little callous.

Todd was trying to steal Walt's formula and he was freaking with Jesse.  I mean he beat and tortured Jesse.

He was a loon.

It's been a while, but didn't Todd break into the White's house and threaten to kill Skyler and the kids?

Yeah he did to protect the uptight milf he wanted to bang.

I never said he wasn't nuts, just that he seemed more human than his uncle or the rest of the gang. It really isn't much of a complement, I was more saying the character worked well for the show.

This show almost reminded me of The Simpsons in a way that every character had more depth, more dimension than you would see on almost any other show. Obviously, very different shows, but every character served a purpose and every character was "real."

There's an episode called Ozymandias (I think it's the 14th out of 16 episodes) that is one of the best of the series.
I just finished re-watching this episode while I was working out and I don't have to worry about sleeping kids and could blast the volume (it's on-demand on my cable) and the intensity--even watching it a second time--is off the charts.

Man, I can’t believe I ever rooted for that scumbag, Mr. White.

Re-watching the second to last episode of season 4, walt is spinning the gun around on the table at the beginning of the episode and every time the barrel faces in his direction...except the last time when it, bam, faces toward the Lily of the Valley plant in his backyard and then the look on his face like it all came to him at that exact moment.

While saving Jesse might have been his redemption at the end, the entire series only happens because he is trying to make enough money for his family to survive after he is gone.

He certainly turns into an poopchute, but his central focus is always there.

Apparently it’s going to be about the aftermath with Jessie. I’m not sure how I feel about this, I’d rather they just do one last season if they’re gonna do anything. I thought it ended appropriately, but if anyone can make this good it’s Gilligan and co.

However, it appears the actor will be stepping back into White’s shoes to make an appearance in the highly-anticipated project, which is said to serve as a sequel to the TV hit and centre on the misadventures of White’s criminal sidekick, Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul.

According to a cast list obtained by RevengeoftheFans.com, Cranston will reunite with Paul for the film, which will also include the return of Krysten Ritter, Jonathan Banks, and Jesse Plemons, among other series regulars.

The show always bounced around the timeline from the past and the future so it’s really not too surprising to see these names attached to this.

Rewatching Salud. Wow. What television. The looks on Mike and Gus’ faces as Jessie tells off the Cartel’s cook. Gus getting his revenge on Don Eladio. Crazy to think I had even a modicum of happiness for Walt at that point.

Walt’s laugh at the end of “Crawl Space” and the cinematography. Jeez. Gus telling Hector the Salamanca name ends with him.

There will never be a show as good as this one again. Ever.
