Not really, it's like a debenture at a golf club. You can recover the money by selling it on, so it isn't a charge per se. At worst it's a forced purchase of an asset.

The alternative would be making tickets more expensive.

Everyone loses money on PSLs. They are a terrible investment. PSL agreement language states they are not to be treated as an investment, but that hasn't stopped every team from advertising them as such.

The alternative would be making tickets more expensive.

False dilemma.

I don't think that last part is true. You think anyone who might go to one NFL game a season is gonna pay 300 bucks for a nosebleed seat in November? I don't.

PSL's are just penalties for being too invested in the team.

No, I don't either. Which is why PSLs are probably unavailable if you want a brand new $1.5B stadium for your team.

Although having said that, I just did some rough math off the top of my head. Let's say the Jets and Giants sold 50,000 PSLs at an average of $3000 each, that's $150M towards the stadium costs. Assuming 16 games in a season at the Meadowlands and 90,000 at each game, that's 1,440,000 tickets per season.  You'd only need to put $10 on each ticket for ten years to recover close to the same amount. I guess PSLs have the advantage of giving you a significant amount of short term cash though.

Between that, hiding concussion truths, how they treat retired NFL players, and Rodger freaking Goodell, this league can eat a dick.

I wish fanbases had enough people to boycott PSLs.

All PSLs serve to do is remove real fans from stadiums. You get left with a bunch of slap dick Manhattan playboys in the prime seats and luxury boxes who ask you to sit down when cheering

If you've never in your life shaken your head in disgust at "These kids today," you're about to. Trust us.
The San Francisco 49ers are in the midst of a complete franchise overhaul, resignations and retirements changing the entire character of the team. As part of that, the 49ers have consulted with Stanford University researchers to figure the best ways to reach the millennial generation.

Their answer: let the players play on their phones.

At first blush, it seems completely counter to every tough-guy football cliche ever: taking smartphone breaks? Really? But the more the 49ers considered it, the more it made sense, and as a result, the team takes breaks every half-hour to let the players check their phones, post status updates, and the like.

“The [experts] are telling me about attention spans and optimal learning,” new head coach Jim Tomsula told the Wall Street Journal. “I’m thinking, ‘My gosh, we sit in two-hour meetings. You are telling me after 27 minutes no one’s getting anything?'"

Thus, the breaks, in which players can, in Tomsula's words, “go grab your phone, do your multitasking and get your fix.”

The 49ers have also switched to digital playbooks and cell-phone alerts for team meetings. So far, no one has missed a meeting, the team reports. It's a small change, yes, but a significant one. So when you see a 49er bringing his cell phone into the huddle this fall, you'll know where it all started.

Hahahahaha

And had he chose to stay, how fucked would his marketability be after all the excrement to happen to that franchise.

Greetings, the People, Matt Cleary here, I'll be doing my best to call the Big Game - San Francisco 49ers versus Minnesota Timberwolves (or something) - live from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. And it should be good. I don't admit to knowing a motherlode about American football but I do know there's a third-string punt returner and/or running back playing called Jarryd "Hayne Plane and/or Train" Hayne, wearer of the most famous No.38 in Australian sports history. So yes, there's been some hype.

49ers agreed to terms with C Alex Mack, formerly of the Falcons.

35-year-old Mack is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and played for coach Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta where the two went to a Super Bowl together. Mack isn’t the All-Pro talent he once was at this stage of his career, but he is still above average and brings smarts and leadership. Incumbent Niners C Weston Richburg is expected to retire.

49ers signed LT Trent Williams to a six-year, $138.06 million contract.

Williams' patience pays off (literally) in becoming the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history, landing $55.1 million guaranteed including $30.1 million as a signing bonus. Initially drafted by Mike Shanahan in 2010, it's also likely Williams, 32, finishes his career under Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco. The Chiefs and Bears had reportedly discussed deals with him too but weren't in the same ballpark in terms of compensation. The final details are expected to unveil the Niners stretching out Williams' cap hit to allow for $16-$18 million in cap space ahead of the official start of free agency.

Basically he didn't want to get caught holding the bag, because he knew this year he was 'close' enough to be able to move up, and in another year he expects to be picking in the 20's-30's. So it would be impossible to go get a guy. Thus, he said I'd rather pay to be sure I'd rather get my guy than sit at 12 and not get a guy I want, or feel is about to win me all the games.

No one.

But also no one else will offer anything remotely similar. I want that damn edge prospect. I’d be much happier with 10 and/or 35,38,69.

That said if it’s either 4 or not happening, I’d probably give it.

The value of 4 is just extremely high. Of course you won't get a player as good at 4,but it's about can you get equal value at 4 + the 18-20 million in cap space or whatever the freak we'd be saving annually for the next 5 years.

I think that reason is Tyreek wanted out and KC felt they had to move him. In the case of Samuel, Brown or Metcalf, the team has his rights for another year plus two years on the tag that ensures that someone needs to convince them to trade him away now.

But hey if Douglas can convince SF (or Tenn or Sea) to send us their megastar for 38 I am all freaking in

By definition, giving a player the ability to veto a trade makes it more difficult to trade him.

By definition, giving a player the ability to veto a trade makes it more difficult to trade him.

That single aspect makes it more difficult to trade him. However his contract was always prohibitive. Now it's not.

Now he has a veto yes, but now team are actually would be willing to trade for him.

I'd say it's a net improvement to trade him

Now does it make sense that they've waited till the first week of September to try to trade him? Probably not, so it's certainly possible they won't be trading him

NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco believes Sam Darnold "might be ... the most talented thrower" in 49ers history.
“He might be — can I say this — the most talented thrower of the football that the 49ers have ever had,” Maiocco said in a recent radio interview with KNBR. “Let’s just put him in the very high echelon of guys who can just drop back in the pocket and throw the football. I think that he hasn’t really had any chance to succeed since his college days are over. I think he’s had four head coaches in five years, five offensive coordinators in five years. He’s a talented guy.” It's quite the claim, one sure to upset both Niners fans and people old enough to remember Steve Young and Joe Montana. Darnold made great strides in resurrecting his career in the final couple months of the 2022 season, proving efficient for a run-heavy Carolina offense. Only five QBs had a higher EPA per play than Darnold from Week 12-18. He posted a career-high 8.2 adjusted yards per attempt. Darnold is expected to split first-team reps with Trey Lance this offseason and could see multiple starts for the 49ers if Brock Purdy (elbow) isn't ready for the start of the regular season.

Part of the reason he’s had 4 head coaches and 5 OCs in 5 years is because Sam has been very bad. If he was good, people wouldn’t have been firing OCs left and right to get someone else who might have been a better fit to help Sam reach his potential.

i am not excusing sam's poor play and his subpar career thus far. he had both some bad teams and some nice weapons in carolina, but made nothing of it.

however, if there's any team that can make sam look good, it's the 49ers and shanahan.

he was always a nice kid and put blame/responsibility on himself, and we got nice draft picks for him, so i can't hold any grudges

Getting reasonable compensation for Sam is more than offset by the fact  we drafted Zach with a much more valuable pick, which is a pick we likely could've traded down to a QB needy team

we missed with zach but one move's success has nothing to do with the other's failure. it was time to move on from sam. if we held onto him we'd still be in the QB purgatory we were in prior to getting rodgers, and we would have gotten nowhere near the return for sam if we traded him at a later time.

even with missing on zach, we used sam's picks to build up the team and we were still able to pull a move for rodgers a couple of years later, with a roster as good as it's ever been in the last 12 years.

i know he had more 'weapons' on the panthers but time revealed that he was again subject to a shitty coaching infrastructure with carolina. still not as bad as being punished with gase and loggains; we essentially put this kid in QB purgatory during the key developmental period of his career. if there is one gay that can make anything of sam's career, it's shanahan

I was all in on Watson before the bad stuff came up. Thought it made a ton of sense with our draft capital and QB need.

I think the accusations really screwed him up mentally. And I'm not saying he's a victim. The victims are the victims. But purely football speaking, I think the whole ordeal screwed him up. He went from being the golden child to being a pariah, deservedly so.

In a way it's the most hilarious outcome of the situation. If he never played again there would be some what-if speculation about how good he could have been. It's probably much worse that he got 100s of millions guaranteed, though.
