Title: Boxing thread
Post by: guinness77 on February 21, 2015, 08:48:40 AM
I don't know how much activity this thread will get, but I, for one, will spend my hard earned money on this fight.

It's happening about 3 or 4 years later than I would have liked, but at least it is happening. I fully expect Mayweather to win, although I cannot stand him, but will be rooting for the Pac Man.

Kind of conflicted because I'm absolutely convinced Pacquiao was using HgH during his best years and I absolutely can't stand Mayweather's cocky attitude but I hope this can kind of put boxing back on the map. I used to be the hugest fight fan, used to always get the pay-per-view fights and loved when boxing was truly a main event. Hopefully this fight lives up to the hype that's sure to be there.

It's not going to have anywhere near the impact it would have, and you can see that already. That said, Mayweather is going to bludgeon manny.

They're both objectionable pricks, but Mayweather annoys me more so I guess I'll be pulling for the Pacman. I would have been more interested if they'd got their excrement together five years ago though. No excuse for them not fighting each other in their prime.

Haha. It still kills me the way Mayweather destroyed Gatti and Hatten. I wasn't very surprised by the outcomes, but the way he beat them was sad.

As much as I hate Mayweather, he is easily one of the best fighters I've ever seen and I've been following boxing for more than 30 years now.

I like Mayweather 5x more just because of how white dudes over 40 call him a thug and hope he gets destroyed. I remember the Gatti fight in '05 where he absolutely destroyed Gatti and silenced the crowd in the first minute.

Also agree on the liking boxing way more than MMA front.

I like boxing and mma.

pac n Mayweather is a waste. They should've had this fight 10 years ago.

Paxman woulda taken his lunch money. But now he's way past his prime and Mayweather is still one of the best defensive boxers of all time.

I expect Mayweather to win on a decision

Now i really want to see keith thurman vs mayweather

Quote
The fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will cost $99 to watch on pay-per-view, the Wall Street Journal's Joe Flint reports.

It'd be the most expensive pay-per-view fight ever. PPVs for big boxing matches and UFC fights typically cost around $59. The previous record was $74.95.

Flint reports that a standard definition feed will cost $89. HBO and Showtime, the two companies that the respective fighters have preexisting deals with, are still hammering out the details.

The all-time record for PPV buys is 2.48 million for the Mayweather-Oscar de la Hoya fight in 2007.

Mayweather's biggest fight in recent years — against Canelo Alvarez in 2013 — generated 2.2 million buys and a record $150 million in revenue.

The Pacquiao fight — scheduled for May 2 in Las Vegas — is expected to exceed both of those records, and make Mayweather as much as $180 million.

As Iggy's saying - it was a typical Mayweather fight. Amazing defense where he barely gets hit. The opponent gets in a couple flurries to steal a couple rounds here and there, but for the most part, Mayweather is in control, not letting the opponent connect, and instead countering, or just bouncing in and out with jabs.

Manny connected on 19% of his punches. And that's the normal average against Floyd. When 4 out of 5 punches aren't landing, it's hard to win.

I didn't think it was completely "duh." The first 6 rounds were entertaining and at the very least, even. Rounds 7-9 are where Mayweather really took control of the fight and put distance between himself and Pacquiao.

freak the ref for letting him get away with more than he should've but as much as I hate that woman beating freak, for a 38 year old his lateral quickness is still insane.

I really hope this isn't the last gasp of a dying sport, but there now is no big megafight on the horizon.

That isn't the point. Mayweather is more than capable of taking the fight to an opponent - look at his performance against Sugar Shane Mosley - and given the amount of money Mayweather was taking off everyone for last night's event, I think he had a responsibility to actually fight.

...Mayweather?  Responsibility?  All he cares about is money and legacy.  The guy wasn't going to open himself to losing his first fight ever just because people wanted him to.  He wanted to win, and that formula has been working for him for ages.

He had to take the fight to Mosley until he knew he was ahead on the scorecards.  He wasn't as effective defending and countering.  He didn't have to worry about that last night.  If Pac had suddenly been able to out score him in the first few rounds, it would have been a different fight.  Why would he adopt a new strategy if he wasn't forced to?
Title: Re: Mayweather - Pacquiao (May 2)

I'm not sure that last night did much for his legacy. Twelve rounds of dodging and head holding with the occasional jab to keep the judges happy may have been enough to win the fight, but what could have been the icing on a glittering career will be remembered as a disappointment. His pre-fight claims of being better than Ali are both disrespectful and laughable after the way he dealt with the contest.

His record is his legacy.  Last night preserved it.  He's never going to be an impressive brawler at his weight.  He just has to not lose and then anyone who didn't watch him will look at it and assume his greatness.

They're saying he could face possible discipline for not disclosing the injury, he found out about it in April.

TIL people get mad when boxing isn't like it is in the movies.

Well I think most people were pissed at Pacquaio for not going for it. Not sure why he thought going jab for jab all 12 rounds was a good idea. I was dying for some excitement. Never happened.

And risk losing out on the money? I'd rather take whatever lame disciplinary action they can throw at him.

Canelo Alvarez vs GGG - September 16th
I have been waiting for this for 3 years.  This is the type of middleweight trilogy  (I can dare to dream) that could bring boxing back in a world that has moved on to MMA.

Canelo has a great chin and is arguably more skilled, but Golovkin is a freak of nature for his small frame.

This is basically a battle of undefeateds.  I put a huge * next to Canelo's loss.  They trotted him out against Mayweather way to early in his career to get a big payday.
Title: Re: Boxing thread
Post by: IATA on May 07, 2017, 09:44:26 PM
I think Canelo wins it, his resume is more impressive and he's much more talented imo.

JCCJr is trash and had no business in the ring with Canelo last night, but Canelo freaking murked him.

Chavez after the fight, 'He never hurt me.'

Sit down kid.  You looked like you got face fucked by a bus.

Canelo should beat Golovkin if he can avoid getting knocked out.  Biggest test of his chin to date.

I'm actually not too upset that it was a draw because it guaranteed a rematch and keeps GGG unretired, but that was bullshit. This is one of the big reasons the general public doesn't like boxing.

This fight could easily have been a draw across all cards.  It's the fact the one old bitch decided Canelo won decisively that is the problem.

The general public gets too hung up on scoring and decisions.  A great fight is still a great fight, and last night was a great fight.

I'll be watching it again, assuming HBO airs it next weekend.  Nothing against GGG, but not unlike a Rocky movie, I want to understand what Canelo needs to do to win.

I want to say stamina.  Somewhere in the first minute of round 10, I though GGG might go down, but Canelo didn't have anything left for the last 2 minutes.

Fury is 17 lbs heavier than their 1st fight. A few pounds off the highest fighting weight of his career.

Not sure how I feel about this rumoured Tyson comeback. He looks ferocious in the training video but I'm not sure how he'll cope in the ring with someone else trying to hit him.

As long as it's some other old fart like Holyfield, he'll be fine.  If he fights a halfway respectable opponent, it'll bring in cash.  If he fights some celebrity just for fun, not so much.  It would be awesome if he fought a real boxer and won.

I don't watch much boxing these days, but when I lived in the UK I watched a lot. I used to go to the York Hall in Bethnal Green and got to see some up and coming unknowns at the beginning of their career, like Ricky Hatton and Carl Froch. In all my time watching boxing, either live or on TV, I have never seen a more devastating and intimidating fighter than Mike Tyson, and I think he could still overpower many current fighters by sheer force of will. I really wouldn't want to see him have to deal with someone like Fury now though, there's no way at 53 he can walk through a size difference like that the way he used to. He'll get picked off before he lands anything.

Lopez wrecked Loma for like 8 or 9 rounds. Loma started doing excrement in the 8th but too late by then.

I think my fav part of the win is the Lopez Sr was right all along and lomachenko couldn't handle Lopez, for years.

LMAO.

Gotta wonder what people are thinking in terms of expecting a charity exhibition to actually be judged in terms of a winner and loser.

Good on both of them for even getting in there, and Iron Mike looks sharp. If there were a senior tour he'd be freaking people up.

^^ agree with that. i have no idea why people are pissed that there wasn't a winner declared lmao. not only was it a charity exhibition, did they not see the comical fight rules that were in play? this wasn't meant to be a serious 'fight'/'win-loss' event

i enjoyed it. i thought roy jones jr was out there fighting like a comedian. he was standing in front of mike throwing 3-4 punch combinations with the intent of hitting nothing but air lmfaoooooooo

However, Fury has claimed otherwise and stopped training for the fight altogether, and will stay out of the gym until he says he is given a 'fight date' and has 'a hell of a lot of money in my pocket'.

Speaking to iFLTV, the WBC champion said: 'I’ve stopped training now, I’m on holiday, I‘m doing anywhere between, eight, 10, 12 pints of lager a day at the minute. Not eating though so I’m getting my calories through alcohol.

‘There’s nothing to do, is there? I’ve done training, training, training with no further process. It’s one of those things, at the minute I’m just chilling out, being a man of leisure in lockdown.’

Jake Paul is the best heel in the world right now.

That's both a compliment to him, and an indictment on the sad, sorry state of modern boxing and professional wrestling.

I'm 99% sure this will be one those exhibition situations that no one wins, but how freaking awesome would it be for Mike Tyson to destroy this lover of the older lady's head.

Let Mike load up on some steroids, then a sniff of coke right before the bout.

I've softened a lot on Paul, it looked like a gimmick to start with but he's really taking boxing seriously and he's not terrible. It's just a shame he's taking fights for the purse and the exposure rather than trying to match with more credible opponents - I don't think the result of fighting Tyson, regardless which way it goes, proves anything.

Jake Paul was doing the professional wrestling heel shtick better than anyone in professional wrestling.

Logan took notice of what his brother was doing and said, "lol freak actually boxing, if WWE is going to give me a bag I'll just go do the same thing my brother is doing for a guaranteed paycheck."
