Title: Black Friday deals
Post by: Johnny English on November 27, 2014, 09:13:39 AM
Nest have $50 off their learning thermostats online right now, making them $199. I bought one about a year ago and it has paid for itself in savings. Takes twenty minutes to install with nothing more than a screwdriver and allows you to do all sorts of cool things like control your heating and air con with your phone, auto-learning schedules, emailing you energy usage reports and so on. Highly recommend.

I don't know anything about them, but it sounds interesting so I was checking it out. And that's the exact price they go for on amazon. (199)

Is that a deal or just the typical price?

Speaking of black Friday deals there's a 55 inch 4khd Samsung that they apparently made just for black Friday for 900$.

Seems like a pretty good deal for a real brand 4k TV that doesn't involve battling the swarms as a doorbuster

I just don't know if buying a 4k TV right now is warranted since very little media is made for the format, although Netflix has begun making 4k content

I've always wondered

Wouldn't people who camp out for blackfriday deals likely make out better if they just picked up overtime at work instead of wasting 12+ hours camping out in the cold

I bought mine in Canada and it was only available at full price, I don't know if that Amazon price is a BF deal but I've not seen them discounted before.

Or they could take the day off, stay home and order it online on Monday. Everybody wins.

I went to Best Buy on Monday.  There was a line of family sized tents with whole families in them.  The line started a week early.

A lot of jobs are pretty strict about no overtime nowadays. I'm one of 6 guys who are allowed to pick up overtime in my company. We are only allowed to do it because of the nature of our department.

Every other job I have had since the recession had a strict no OT no matter what stance.

I guess it depends on the industry

Healthcare is littered with ot. But ot has always been somewhat cost effect as it can be cheaper than hiring another person and paying for their benefits. And I'd imagine with Obamacare and rising healthcare cost OT would be even more cost effective.

Of course  that's assuming it's  a job that offers benefits

Been a crazy amount of 4khd tvs on sale so far

Seems like they're finally going mainstream

Only supports 60hz with current technology so it probably wouldn't be the greatest for gaming or sports though

I'm not sure that that refresh rate makes sense

It's possible that that's the refresh rate when downgraded (ie 720p)

If it was 420 at 4k that TV would be like 12 grand

700 for a 4k TV 50 inch is great if it has hdmi 2.0 though

Any Wayne Chrebet fans here?

Amazon is having a special lightning deal for an autographed mini helmet. It's slated to go off at 440 today. Go to Amazon and look at today's deals> up coming> scroll to 440 and you should see it.

I will add a link later if anyone gives a excrement, I have to be honest, I don't.

Only thing I jumped on was best buy had a good deal on a remote starter for cars, with like a  1 mile range

Other than that deals have mostly been on Tvs

I mean there's been quite a few good deals on chromecast for around 20$

Pair that up with a new TV and you're good to go

As a Jets fan I often find myself the recipient of random Jets-related things, pretty much anything you can slap a logo and colors on. So if I needed a space heater that would be a slam dunk.

Hell, the Jets store even had a Jets toaster that would burn the team logo on to your toast. Nobody ever bought that for me though.

I thought you were saying it's an easy gift, as in something you could easily give most people (ie a bottle of wine, or an ipod or something)

Went Black Friday shopping late Thursday night.  Got all the Disney Infinity stuff I needed for my son's birthday (New Year's Day), a couple of movies, clothes, and a couple of Wii U games.  No big ticket items because I didn't need any big ticket items, and nothing really jumped out at me anyway.

So Amazon Fire tv will control my Directv (record, pause live tv, manage recordings, season pass to shows etc), control volume on the receiver, control playback of dvds and cds, and change inputs for each activity with the press of a single button?  I thought it was just another way to access premium TV apps.  Huh.

If you haven't played uncharted before or like final fantasy that deal looks pretty hard to beat.

Now that I look back on that otherndeal it's pretty nice too. I don't think you see better deals than those, probably just different games included.

I believe standard PS4 price is $349 so that uncharted deal is better than the black ops deal IMO. But obviously which games you want to play matter more.

That 1TB harddrive makes the black ops deal comparable IMO. That depends on how many games you plan on downloading throughout the life of the system. I don't have many games and im pretty sure I have my standard hard drive close to halfway full in less than year.

It pretty much is the Last of Us since it's the same company and came out after the first 3 games.

but the whole concept was def originally based off Tomb Raider hence why people sometimes refer to it as Dude Raider

I just got this at best buy. I'm tempted to not open it and sit on it for the next couple weeks to see if a better deal becomes available, but I don't think that's gonna happen. Also don't really think anything better will come along.

Apparently best buy has a deal where if you buy any PS4 bundle right now you get fallout 4 for free.

Yea Black Friday is designed for black people, Puerto Ricans, and DCM.

The stuff that is sold really cheap on Black Friday is a one off piece of excrement with the cheapest possible components. Black Friday isn't really worth it anymore since online shopping became the norm.

Best Buy had some deals on Samsung's nano-tech 4k TVs, but they're a poor excuse for what the tech is capable of.  The only 4k TV in excited about right now is the OLED from LG.  The rest just aren't there yet.  Amazon still has those for sale at the same price.

All the doorbusters were excrement.  My wife and I stopped by Best Buy last night at 10 to try to get some stuff for the kids.  We were in and out within 15 minutes with Inside Out on Blu ray and 4 Disney Infinity Star Wars figures.  Grand total of $18 because Best Buy screwed up and gave me extra rewards.

Im not talking about the "spectre 43 inch 4khd" and all these cheap knockoff bullshit tvs that dont even support 4k nor have hdmi 2.2

Im talking about the Vizio M series 75 inches for < 2k or samsung UHD JU6500 75 for like 2499

Are those top of the line tvs no freaking way, but I dont think most (normalish) people cant afford to spend much more than that on a tv. So for the value thats fantastic

The LG is 5 grand and thats just for 65 inches

The best value this year was unquestionably the deals on the 55-60 inch M series, if you dont mind having a tv that small

If people want to buy a 4k TV now just to say they have a 4k TV, so be it.  Everything shy of the OLED and maybe the 9500 series from Samsung is going to be a woeful underperformed once manufacturers release the next couple of rounds.  You're basically paying for an intermediate step TV that you'll want to replace in a couple of years.  Like I said, that's why the prices have been so low.

Arent you supposed to replace a tv after a couple of years ?

I would imagine that OLED technology isnt going to hit the sweet spot of price/performance for another 4-5 years. And I think around 5 years is a reasonable lifespan for a tv

One of the last Pioneers, but the point is that if you get a solid TV you don't feel a need to upgrade every few years.  The Samsung 9500 series might fit that bill.  The only TV on sale that comes at all close is the 8500, and it's a pretty big disappointment for nanotechnology.  4k TVs should be getting better shortly.

Oh, and I paid $1500 for a brand new 60" Pioneer.  When they were heading out of business and put the 2008 models up for sale, they had resellers cutting 2007 ones for huge deals.

I took a look earlier, it was pretty lame. Granted I'm not really in the market for any gadgets but the deals don't make me want to buy on impulse anyway. If a good deal on a 4k TV comes up I may pull the trigger but it's tough to buy something like that sight unseen

Prime Day is one of the situations where if you are in the market for something weird you could catch a steal of a deal.  Potentially.  Like last year, they had a huge pack of Granny panties as one of their first prime deals.  Besides Puck, I don't know anyone in the market for that, but if you were an old lady on the internet, you might be celebrating.

The average person probably has to really look to find something worth buying.  I do wonder if it is an event to unload a bunch of excrement to clear out storage space.  Amazon is a hugely successful business, so I can't knock anything they do.

Been a while since I bought my receiver  just make sure you need all the excrement you're paying for
A lot of receivers have like 7.1, Sonos, wireless speaker capabilites and all kinds of bizarre excrement you don't need unless you actually plan on buying it.

99% of people are extremely happy with just a quality 200$ 5.1 receiver and then just blowing their load on a huge sub with deep ranger and some quality standing speakers

Apparently this yamaha is the king of the mid-range receiver class.  It will do everything i need it to do, and it allows me to expand later on if I choose to.  The 5 HDMI inputs is nice too.  My current one (it's 12 years old mind you) only has 2.

So my dad tells me at the end of the day today he wants a new tablet for Christmas. He is very anti apple products at the moment and has apparently decided he wants a Samsung tablet as "their phones are so much better, why wouldn't their tablets also be?"

Rather than argue with him, I just plan to get him what he wants. Does anybody have a Samsung tablet? Is there a model preference? Is it worth it for the top of the line S4 tablet? Apparently that's pushing $600. Lastly, anybody see any Cyber Monday deals rolling around on those tablets?

Thanks

The Jets Shop is running a 30% off deal for Black Friday.  So I finally pulled the trigger on a green Darnold jersey (stitched) and a new Jets hat (Mrs MB didn't care for the AIDS being spread from my old sweatstained jets hat).  Sadly, the exchange rate and shipping still bent me over, but at least the 30% off deal softened that a little.

Lost my expensive pair of Sony headphones I bought last year ($200) so tried to replace them.  The newer model is $80 more than I paid last year and I couldn't find the older model I bought.  Instead of trying something new, I ended up buying a used pair of my old headphones for $130 on ebay with a 1 year warranty.  Interested to see how this will work out for me and if the warranty will end up being worth it.

At the moment I feel like I ended up on top.

This years haul featured a new Lenovo laptop at $550 that usually retails at $750 (truthfully I don't need it for much more than a word processor but I figured if I was getting a new laptop I may as well get something that can run some titles I might be interested in playing at some point), a Samsung sound bar for the basement from best buy, the usual fifa-cod-nhl price break that i wait for every year (got the sports games for 30 and cod for 38), and a refrigerator for the basement so my fat derriere doesn't have to walk upstairs when i want a beverage. Good year overall.

Decent deals on Hulu and Disney plus out there. Have to mull them both over today figuring out if I'll ever use them

With protein powder typically being around 50 cents to a dollar a scoop  you're basically talking about a 6-9 months worth if you use it regularly

$199 Xbox One with Jedi Outcast plus a $40 Target gift card for later use.

2 HP laptops for my kids for $129 each and Motorola G7 for $149 at Best Buy.

My wife spent like $200 at Ulta Beauty for herself and her mother. Nothing for me this year. I'm sure I'll get a nice bottle of Maccallan under the tree this year again though.

excrement deals all around

Some good cellphone deals

Horrible TV deals

Mediocre video game deals

Honestly one of the worst black Fridays I've ever seen.

Maybe pandemic/supply issues is a big part. I think the lack of people wanting to fight mobs due to covid probably just drastically changed the environment of online sales. Retailers know everyone's just gonna sit at home and shop they don't need crazy prices online

From a video game perspective, this seems like a terrible black friday.

It was okay, depends on what you looked for. Lot of brand new games that came out in the last month for 15-20$ off.

Obviously I'm a cheap stingy freak when it comes to cap space and my irl cap space but there's phenomenal deals. Helped my friend get an xbox series x for 375 (before tax)

You just gotta nerd out on the deal/video game sites.ill concede it helps having worked night shift and being able to just buy excrement I don't need during lulls

TLDR use slickdeals.net or https://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/10-video-game-deals/

Obviously you gotta navigate through a lot of garbage but they're somewhat effective tools

And for those of you who want to be really stingy you could look into "gamesharing" essentially let's you buy any game for any console and split it with another person, effectively cutting the price in half of any game that's not an mmorpg. It's pretty simple to do, just Google it.

That's all

Cyber monday deals suck

But if you're a Playstation person

https://slickdeals.net/f/16255855-target-buy-select-100-egift-cards-get-15-target-egift-card-email-delivery-100?attrsrc=search%3Aterm%3APlaystation+target%7Csearch%3Apage%3A1%7Csearch%3Aposition%3A5%7Csearch%3Aresult_type%3Athread%7Csearch%3Aresult_id%3A16255855&src=SiteSearchV2Algo1

Essentially 15% off any Playstation game

And if you do playstations subscription gamepass bullshit thing that's also 25% off (all tiers, directly from Sony)

So you can effectively get 36% off any of the annual Playstation plans. Haven't touched my ps5 in months so this will be a decent chance to catch up on idk whatever the freak is on there

Good cyber monday for Playstation people otherwise it's all crap

I need a 65 or 75 inch for the room and am left feeling confused with all the options.  The TV I currently have is great and 10 years old so I feel like it's unnecessary to spend 1200+ for a new TV.  Am I wrong?

You don't need to spend that much.  I'm no expert, but figure out what you want to spend first and you can very likely find a good tv for it.  Even the shitty TVs now are good.

Easy answer, go to Costco.

Unless you're into hardcore gaming or any other excrement (in which case you'd know you'd want a better TV) I think distance/size, and the amount of light in the room are the most important things to determine what you do.

Otherwise yeah Costco is the way to go.

historically black Friday and the super bowl are the best times to buy a TV. So might be a good be a good idea to just go for the best bang for your buck a little closer to the event.

But yeah most important things is figuring out seating distance > TV size, and amount of windows/ambient light and how that'll impact your choices. General rule of thumb is TV size will give you more "value" over all other things

It will be our primary TV and it will be in a heavily windowed room.  That site ratings has been a ton of help.  I'm not really a big tech guy nor do I game alot.  My last TV, a Samsung, lasted me 10 years and is still going strong.  I'd prefer to buy something that's going to last.

The only concern id have is how many years they'd last and that Costco doesn't sell either.

By all accounts I don't think you'd find better quality for a 65 inch than the hisense. Especially since it's highly rated in bright rooms

Return policy and Costco usually extends (and stands by) their warranty better than anyone. Other big ticket local retailers aren't bad (ie best buy) but nobody will give piece of mind like Costco. Like 2 years ago I dropped like 2 grand on the TV they're talking about above from Costco. Had issues after 3 months, and they came to my house and picked up for free, gave me zero issues and a full refund.

That said I also almost went and bought the TCL 6 series (which was a best buy exclusive) and they aren't the best when it comes to returns/warranties.

At the end of the day I'd go with the best price regardless of retailer, but if price/logistics work out Costco is well known as the best place to buy a TV

I ended up getting the LG b2.  Fiance actually helped to push me over the line and splurge instead of getting the TCL 6 series.

Ended up getting it on Amazon for $1290.  Now I'm wondering if spending the extra $100 and buying it with the 5 year warranty they offer would be worth it though.

Thanks for everyone's help on this

For almost 10% of the TV price id personally pass
