Title: Random Retail therapy
Post by: MBGreen on October 14, 2014, 02:57:10 PM
I work next to a shopping mall in downtown Winnipeg, so the retail therapy is always available.

Today's purchase was the X-Men - Days of Future Past blu ray, with a South Park (season 17) for dessert.

Needing good work shoes isn't analogous to getting depressed and buying myself a pick me up. However, getting a pick me up from shopping isn't that far removed from getting a protein pick up from Sven. Therein lies the difference.

Selling the Camaro freed up some cash.

I'd rather spend it on movies, than Ebola-infested black hookers.

EDIT: are you comfortable in stilettos at work?

You mean while at work? Generally they frown upon liquid lunches here:

I'm going for a major shopping expedition on Sunday. Amongst the items that I intend to procure are:

- Sweaters (I cleared out last year's stock and not much is left)
- Jeans (I'm down to two pairs of blue, one green, one black and one white)
- Socks (both everyday and sports)
- Watch strap (I don't like the strap on my Bulova)
- Sunglasses (my trusty Pradas are now four years old and showing their age)

You also think that denim jackets with heavy metal patches sewn on them are haute couture.

You basically redid your whole basement for less than a grand. That's pretty damn good.

Retail update: today I purchased the following.

- Two shirts (one black, one red)
- Two pairs of pants (one dark grey, one a kind of grey/green)
- Four pairs of running socks (white Under Armour)
- One pair of boots (black)
- Two sweaters (one light brown, one dark brown)

The queue at the watch repair place was too big and I didn't love the sunglasses I looked at, so a further shopping trip will be required this week (particularly as the arm fell off my Pradas yesterday so now I really have to buy some new ones).

More news as I have it.

I ordered volume 21 and 22 of TWD on Amazon, once it arrived I realized I already had 21. I requested to return to it, put down "No longer wanted/need" as the reason, and they refunded me and said I don't need to bother sending it back.

Is it just not worth it to them to restock it?

Doesn't work like that. It sends you a message to your phone and you have an amount of time to cancel the order, also they'll only fulfil a single order at a time.

So my dad tells me at the end of the day today he wants a new tablet for Christmas. He is very anti apple products at the moment and has apparently decided he wants a Samsung tablet as "their phones are so much better, why wouldn't their tablets also be?"

Rather than argue with him, I just plan to get him what he wants. Does anybody have a Samsung tablet? Is there a model preference? Is it worth it for the top of the line S4 tablet? Apparently that's pushing $600. Lastly, anybody see any Cyber Monday deals rolling around on those tablets?

Thanks

I’m no expert but anything non Apple is going to be Android driven so I don’t think there is much difference between manufacturer. Samsung is quality but I would check to see if Google makes a tablet as well since it’s their OS essentially. I would keep an eye out on Monday for sure as tablets should be discounted most places.

I have multiple Samsung tablets. I have a 10.1 inch Tab A with S pen at home for personal use, which I love. At work, I have a TabS3 9.7 with S pen, and it's amazing (but work laid out for the keyboard case as well, so that's a big plus for it).

I've had smaller Samsung tablets in the past, and everyone in my home owns a Samsung phone (multiple Notes and S phones).

Right now, the only non-Samsung I would consider would be the Google Pixel Slate. My understanding is that it's a Chrome OS tablet, but Chrome now natively supports Android apps, so it's a dual-purpose machine.

I wish I would've seen your post on Black Friday. Best Buy was selling the TabS3 (last year's model--this year's is S4) really cheap. I almost convinced my wife to buy one for me.

They're external drives. Assuming you're going to use it for a backup and never take it out of your house like 95% of people, they're all much the same. Storage is cheap at the moment as well, just buy whatever has enough space for you and is cheap. I've got at least half a dozen from at least three different manufacturers and they all pretty much do the same job.

Clicked an ad for an ant farm on Amazon, this is the first review:

READ BEFORE BUYING!

*UPDATE: 1 star for the product BUT the seller delivered as promised so this review is no reflection on the seller. This is a horrible product. It arrived with the gel settled in a block in the middle (not attached to side walls) which I didn’t realize was a problem until the ants went in, had a long fall down the sides and couldn’t climb back up. They were just piled on top of each other desperately trying to climb up the plastic sides. So I had to turn the habitat on it’s side in order for them to have a chance. I didn’t think I’d care about ants until I had these ones to look after. They don’t tunnel at all. They tear away parts of the gel for consumption but also to bury their dead. Yes - they bury the dead in a mountain of gel bits - likely to protect the colony from whatever killed the others. They seem like they’re just waiting to die. They sleep allll the time. There’s nowhere for them to go. The gel is so sticky that when they walk on it or brush against it - it’s a death sentence. Seriously - they get covered in sticky goo and either slowly suffocate or die from exhaustion trying to free themselves. I’ve been able to reach and rehab 3 of them. Yep - I put them in a cup of room temp water, swirl them, take them out and put them on a Kleenex and repeat a few times. Then they can rest in a dry cup with a piece of screen taped over it. When they start wandering in the cup, I know they’re strong enough to rejoin the colony. I use the plastic stick (provided) to take them out & return them. I put them in away from the others so they don’t get swarmed as an invader because I figure I washed off their scent. It’s a lot of work and most can’t be saved - the tiny opening and the flimsy plastic stick just can’t reach them. My niece doesn’t understand letting nature take its course - that’s how the rescues began. Then it was sheer guilt on my part. I put them in this sticky unnatural environment where they barely have any room to live and I dunno - I feel bad. I NEVER would have gotten this had I known it was actually pretty cruel. The ants are huge. Not your typical yard ant. They’re large red Harvester Ants which leads me to my next few points. DON’T include the kids in transferring them from vile to habitat. Harvester Ant stings rate 4 out of 5 on the pain scale! Also - the top is ridiculous. A slight breeze can knock it off or ajar and you’ll have huge ants with horrendous stings loose in your house. Tape it down, if you decide to get this. So we don’t see any tunneling but we do get to see ants slowly dying and other ones being killed by the others in an ant version of Hunger Games. They dismember and spread out the dead too so there’s no escaping the sad inquiries from the kids. Leg here, abdomen there, etc. Even buried under gel bits - you can see it. It’s nice to give them some food like tiny bits of lettuce or apple or carrot - they LOVE that - it beats the sugar gel that only temporarily keeps them alive. Just know that what they don’t finish, can mold and threaten them. So have a way to fish the remains out. I haven’t had the molding issue with the gel that others have mentioned but like I said - it’s so sticky - it’s deadly either way. I thought this was such a cool gift but really - it’s just mean. If you must - go with a traditional sand ant farm. I wish I did.*

Kept telling myself 'enough-stop'.... yet I kept reading... "we do get to see ants slowly dying and other ones being killed by the others in an ant version of Hunger Games."..  lolol

Had to see what this death machine was all about - thing looks nasty if you're an ant:

The other Costco fart video is something I use as a response to ridiculous questions in a Slack channel at work.

It's so stupid that it's funny.

According to the comments it's fake. Don't care though. Still hilarious.

I spent a fair amount of the Christmas and New Year holiday shopping online. Because we're not in the city any more deliveries take a few days to get here, meaning that I don't know what's coming or when. Each day is bringing new things, some of which I had forgotten I had ordered. Today was a roll of automotive carpet. Yesterday was a book. Can't wait to see what tomorrow will be.

Fairly sure I didn't order that but I have been drinking a lot the last couple of weeks, so I'm not 100%.

Just don’t use any warming lube internally.

Does anyone have one of those electric arc lighters?

Is there any good reason to own an arc lighter, besides that it looks cool?

The convenience of never having to purchase lighter fluid or replacement flints and wicks.

Looks like it’s time to upgrade my TV.

Sort of torn between Samsung, Sony and LG brands

I’ve heard LG’s C3 is tops for gaming.

Samsung has always been a top tv brand.

Saw a Sony XR series the other day in a store which looked really nice, but that price tag…

Anybody recently get a tv? Have any advice?

I've had the same LG TV since 2012. I'm due for a new one. Can't complain about it though.

How’s the glare with the C2? I’ve heard that’s the biggest issue, it lacks brightness in a bright room.

I have mine situated in my basement...very little natural light down there. So I don't deal with any glare.

That’s part of why the Bravia came into my mindset, to avoid the glare issue because this is going to be a living room TV used a bunch during daylight hours. I’d rather not close the blinds every time I need to turn it on. I’ve just heard outstanding things about the LGs otherwise

Mine has a glare issue but is only really noticeable if I'm watching something very dark, which I typically wouldn't be doing in the middle of the day. Plus I have a suboptimal tv/window angle.
