I can't think of a sport that attracts a bigger level of absolute freaking scum to their fanbase. One of the biggest sports bars in our city refuses to show UFC fights any more because they got sick of the kind of douchebros that it drew in.

Every sport is going to have those types of people. It just happens to be, MMA is watched mostly at bars. Those douchebros are the same douchebros causing problems at Football and Hockey games.

Rugby is another tuff sport. ANY sport where you have to go one on one with someone is 10000% harder, all the pressure is on you. Same for Tennis.

But physical combat is something in our DNA, its been around since the dawn of man. I am a life long martial artist and wrestled in high school, I know 1st hand how tuff it is, you lose it's all on you.

No.  MMA attracts the worst kind of people.  Obviously not every MMA fan is like that.  My kids take jiu jitsu and are trained by a Brazilian Master who has also trained MMA fighters.  He's awesome, and so are a lot of the fighters we've met as a result.  I'm not sure how you can dispute that a huge portion of the fanbase is comprised if awful affliction bros.

Nah. I'm a season ticket holder at our local football team and as you know I regularly go to Senators games, they're nowhere to be seen (except when the Leafs are in town). This is very much a UFC thing.

Edit: it is of course possible that all the douchebros love hockey and football just as much, but I don't notice them because the crowd is sufficiently diluted by normal, pleasant, non-douche sports fans. Therefore, it might be more accurate to say that the big problem with MMA is that it's a sport that only douchebros like, and thus the douchebro-ness goes unchecked by the presence of non-douches.

Not disputing it, just pointing out you will find it in any sports fan base. MMA might have more then others.

Irrelevant. You posited that "those douchebros are the same douchebros causing problems at Football and Hockey games"; my town has MMA-loving douchebros, and it also has football and hockey. Those douchebros do not cause problems at football and hockey games, therefore your statement is factually incorrect.

You may have problems being caused at other teams' games, but it does not prove that they are the same people and nor does it change the overwhelming amount of evidence from around the world that most people who enjoy watching MMA are douchebags, far more so than the proportion of people who enjoy watching other sports.

A douchebag is a douchebag, I still stand by my statement. People follow more then one sport. 9 times out of 10, if someone is a douche MMA fan, he's a douche hockey or football fan.

It's possible, but as I stated earlier - some hockey or football fans are undoubtedly douchebags, but the vast majority of MMA fans are. The douchebag quotient of MMA far exceeds that of any other sport.

I see your point. The friends I watch MMA with, are like my self life long Martial Artist, so our group views it in a different way. Douchebros are only happy when someone gets hurt. They're also the same guys who pick fights in bars when you look at their girl the wrong way.

Should be a great fight. I think Jones wins, but I see the argument for Cormier and his wrestling.

She just finally met someone with striking power.

She was tired halfway through the first after getting blasted in the face .

She tried her typical " I'm going to get in close, punch you to get your guard up then hip toss you"

But in the Words of Mike Tyson, "Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth"

Holm stayed moving constantly and fed her knuckles for even thinking of coming into grapple .

She was completely gassed and shocked by the end of Rd1.

When all your fights have been so short she wasn't truly battle tested .

It's not as shocking to me as other people .

Dana White is rubbing his balls at the projected rematch figures lol.

It sucks.  My kids' jiu jitsu professor used to train Rafael.  Went to work with him on the 12th at Kings and said he was as ready as he's ever been and was excited for the fight.  Now it's gone just like that.

press conference was funny but a good reminder how douchey MMA fans  can be sometimes because they shouted like they were in a sports bar the whole damn time

this will be a hell of a fight. and one of the few people i think can beat McGregor. and im a huge McGregor fan, been one before Dana White made him his pet project. I do find it funny that people think power would be an issue for McGregor moving up. When he walks around at 175 and had to cut weight to the point of looking like an anemic zombie to fight at 145 this whole time.

haha he gave out his first compliment ever "theres a lot of pussies in the UFC, and Diaz aint one of them. so theres a respect there"

Diaz sounds like Rocky at the beginning of Rocky 5 immediately after the Drago fight where its obvious he has severe head trauma. lol

lol someone tweeted a pic of them holding an AK threatening McGregor for saying this to Nate

“I like Nick’s little bro. How can you not like him? He’s like a little cholo gangster from the hood,” McGregor said. “But at the same time he coaches kids’ jiu-jitsu on a Sunday morning and goes on bike rides with the elderly. He makes gang signs with the right hand and animal balloons with the left hand. You’re a credit to the community.”

Diaz responded in typical to the point Diaz fashion "freak you, freak your belt motherufcker, i dont give a freak, freak what you said"

lol ok i died someone responded in the comment section

"why does Diaz sound like Walt Jr. from Breaking Bad?"

im pretty sure him and his brother have like some social anxiety disorder or something? only explanation for it really.

50 world tours, 200 press conferences, 1 million interviews, 2 million photo shoots, and at the end of it all I'm left looking down the barrel of a lens, staring defeat in the face, thinking of nothing but my incorrect fight preparation. And the many distractions that led to this.
Nothing else was going through my mind.
It is time to go back and live the life that got me this life.
Sitting in a car on the way to some dump in Conneticut or somewhere, to speak to Tim and Suzie on the nobody gives a freak morning show did not get me this life.
Talking to some lady that deep down doesn't give a freak about what I'm doing, but just wants some sound bites so she can maybe get her little tight derriere a nice raise, and I'm cool with that too, I've been giving you all raises. But I need to focus on me now.
I'm coming for my revenge here.
I flew an entire team to Portugal and to Iceland to make my adjustments in preparation and fix my errors I made with the weight and the cardio prep.
With the right adjustments and the right focus, I will finish what I started in that last fight.
I will not do this if I am back on the road handing out flyers again.
I will always play the game and play it better than anybody, but just for this one, where I am coming off a loss, I asked for some leeway where I can just train and focus. I did not shut down all media requests. I simply wanted a slight adjustment.
But it was denied.
There had been 10 million dollars allocated for the promotion of this event is what they told me.
So as a gesture of good will, I went and not only saved that 10 million dollars in promotion money, I then went and tripled it for them.
And all with one tweet.
Keep that 10 mill to promote the other bums that need it. My shows are good.
I must isolate myself now.
I am facing a taller, longer and heavier man. I need to prepare correctly this time.
I can not dance for you this time.
It is time for the other monkeys to dance. I've danced us all the way here.
Nate's little mush head looks good up on that stage these days. Stuff him in front of the camera for it.
He came in with no excrement to do that last one. I'd already done press conferences, interviews and shot the ads before RDA pulled out.
Maybe I'll hit Cabo this time and skull some shots pre-fight with no obligation.
I'm doing what I need for me now.
It is time to be selfish with my training again. It is the only way.
I feel the $400million I have generated for the company in my last three events, all inside 8 months, is enough to get me this slight leeway.
I am still ready to go for UFC 200.
I will offer, like I already did, to fly to New York for the big press conference that was scheduled, and then I will go back into training. With no distractions.
If this is not enough or they feel I have not deserved to sit this promotion run out this one time, well then I don't know what to say.
For the record also -
For USADA and for the UFC and my contract stipulations -
I AM NOT RETIRED.

Dana White thinks he owns the NFL, but he really has the opportunity to blow everything he's created. I would have said it was all empty threats to go to Bellator or wherever, but the Reebok deal makes for a very unstable alliance with these fighters.

Plus, unless GSP comes back or Jones rushes his prep for a "healthy" Cormier, McGregor is all he has to headline this thing.

McGregor is 100% right, AND just by doing this he's already made me care again for 200, so Dana should be happy. Dude looked like he had no plan as soon as Nate took those shots at 196, so he needs to figure out something else. He needs to really train for this fighter, who is everything he said, and certainly isn't afraid of him.

How is Conor right? He caused all of this. He talked all sorts of excrement, ripping on dudes pulling out of fights, ripping on dudes for making excuses about fighting bigger guys, talking about how he makes people panic in the octagon...and then he does all of it.

he built these expectations for the media with his attitude and talk, and then when things dont go his way, he bails. he signed the contracts, he knew the obligations, he refused to fight anyone but nate, anywhere but 200...and then refuses to do what has got him where he is today?

freak that.

What's got him here is selling fights. He has in three days sold the fight way better than anyone else in the industry not named Jon Jones could and also probably better than being the arrogant prick he usually is could coming off a loss.

Talking mounds of excrement is his thing, but people only pay to see that if the guy is winning. Coming off a loss like that, he needed to sell this fight a different way. Focused, reenergized, desperate Conor makes the fight fresh and gets people to care. Old hat running his mouth Conor doesn't because even a victory just evens it out. He needed to make it feel like he was a new man.

Dana White has no business pulling him out because he's already sold the PPV just doing what he's done. Unless GSP is coming back or they hotshot Jones-Cormier, they aren't topping him on top of the card.

his shtick is useless now, because he got his derriere kicked, so of course he needs to "focus on training". bullshit. hes a hypocrite and theres nothing he can say, so he bitched out.

i was a conor fan up until this, its plain as day to see.

dana has every right to pull him. he violated his contract, he tried to one up the ufc and he put the ufc in a spot where it was cave and let conor do whatever he wants again, like demanding a rematch, or pull him and remind him he is not the ufc. the ufc was here long before conor and will be around long after conor. to be frank, i'd prefer to see khabib/gsp vs diaz. something we didnt see 2 months ago.

You're getting too caught up in the hype for the fight and not seeing the money. Conor knows how to find the money, and the money isn't in being his old self. If you want to hate him for this, fine, but I just see him as a guy trotting out a new character to keep people buying shows, which works. Dana White just doesn't like having a guy so good at self promotion because he wants control of the brand.

I don't think he did terrible all considering.

He was never going to beat Gall, and their game plan was bad(why make punk go right for the ground with a guy stronger and 3 belts higher?).

I think his next fight will be a lot more competitive, now that he has the jitters out and knows what to expect from a real fight and not a gym fight.

Besides, dude pulled in a few million bucks for 90 seconds of work.

He was never going to beat Gall. Gall actually looks like a halfway decent fighter against cans, which Punk is until proven otherwise.

The problem is the UFC will need to sign someone new in order to find a legitimate opponent for Punk. The guy Gall beat in his UFC tune-up fight, Michael Jackson, is more on Punk's level, but even that's hard to know for sure, because no one really knows what Punk's level is (besides very low).

Good for Stipe. And good for Werdum for kicking Rousey's trainer after the fight - Rousey's trainer is awful.

when things were good for her she was really haughty about everything and really talked down about her opponents. she was extremely arrogant and cocky in trying to beat her last two opponents by outboxing them as a way to really troll/embarrass her opponents since the general view was that both of her opponents were better than her in that regard. in attempting to do so in both fights she ended up embarrassing herself very badly, she had really poor technique and boxing skills, and no stand up game whatsoever.

i think it's a really poor look for a sportsperson to lap up all the accolades and enjoy the spotlight but then cower away once they hit a bump in the road. in her case she completely ghosted not just once but twice, weak mindset for an athlete. the bare minimum for a reasonable athlete is to show some accountability, even here we all get pissed when our own players dont talk to reporters after a loss
Title: Re: MMA Thread

Rousey almost singlehandedly put women's MMA on the map. She was a dominant force in the division for years, and her events became must-see TV, even for the 30 seconds or so they would last.

Clearly, she thinks she's a better boxer than she is, but her coach is also a total idiot. Once the book was out on her, she can't adjust, and her opponents can.

I don't see any reason for her to fight again. The hype won't be anywhere near what it was, since she's now been dominated twice. It's not like these are lucky flash KOs - she's getting beat the freak up.

There are obviously multiple GOATs in a sport with weight classes.

My first post was more in reference to the phone smashing. Apparently this guy was following McGregor around at 5am, he’s lucky he didn’t get his face smashed in.

According to Tapology the greatest MMA Featherweight of all time is Jose Aldo, and according to Joe Rogan it's Max Holloway.

I have no idea who either of those people are.

Quote
According to eyewitnesses on the scene the night of the phone smashing, this bloke and his mate had paid a couple hundred dollars to get into McGregor’s VIP section, and were following him around, and acting like his boys all night. Eventually, he and his guards asked them to stop filming, and that’s when they started taunting him about the Khabib loss, at which point, the fans left the VIP section, and later on, when they saw each other outside the nightclub, the phone was smashed.

he handpicked cerrone, there was no way he was losing.
getting whooped aint gonna help the narrative cerrone was paid to lose this, either.

McGregor wanted to fight someone better than Cerrone like Khabib or Masvidal. I think this was a good fight for Conor to get back into it after being out for over a year before his next title shot.

Supposedly if khabib beats Ferguson (he will) McGregor Khabib II will be next. Horrible matchup for Conor, but that’s the money fight. I would rather watch him fight Masvidal, that fight would be exponentially more entertaining.

Khabib's attitude towards a rematch with McGregor is really starting to pee me off to the point that I hope Ferguson kicks his derriere.

And I'm not even a fan of McGregor. But how about giving the sport the marquee matchup that'll continue to put eyeballs on the product? Like it or not, name value has always afforded people that have it certain perks in the fight game whether it be boxing or MMA. Or did Brock Lesnar deserve a title shot in his third fight in the UFC (which he won by the way) on merit?

Not shocked that happened. Thought that might happen later.

Really fun fight. We'll see if Conor comes back and keeps fighting. He is still a guy who can knock guys out early, but it's harder to do that at lightweight.

But getting knocked out like that isn't good for your chin long-term. Neither is going on cocaine binges around the world.

Conor fought almost entirely boxing style this fight and it fucked him. Poirier fucked his front leg up because he was flat footed and didn’t check any of his leg kicks. I watched all of his old fights recently and none of those kicks would have landed if he was fighting in his old karate style. It looks like he’s committed to boxing.

He bought into his own hype after beating the snot out of Cerrone.

I hope this ends the talk of more boxing, he looked embarrassed.

If he commits to MMA and focused and stayed active, he could be champ again. I don't wanna see a rematch until Connor wins another or 2.

Strong take. Can't really disagree. The karate style gave Poirier issues in the first meeting, too.

I also just think the longer the fight went, the better it would be for Poirier. McGregor was right that he was out of action for a while, and he never had great cardio to begin with. One win over Cerrone in under a minute doesn't show me he has cardio.

Being humble is great, but not what I'm talking about. He didn't make any adjustments to his game against a much more dangerous guy, he was coasting and looking ahead. Dustin treated this as a title fight and Conor like a step to khabib.

His cardio has been horrible in all of his most recent fights.

He was done in this fight as soon as his front leg went out. Additionally, as soon as that happened, he decided to make a few really stupid decisions. He might have been gambling because he knew he was finished.

He didn’t make adjustments because he cares more about boxing than MMA. IMO. He’s already shown he can beat Poirier. That was at a different place in his career. Either way he deserved to lose.

Also disagree that he was looking ahead to Khabib because he would have gotten wrecked tonight if he used that strategy lol

He probably wants to fight manny pacquiao or something completely undesirable to watch

He also said he wants to fight 7 times in the next 1.5 years which is literally impossible and completely contrary to how often Conor fights. 1x a year lately and 2x a year earlier in his career.

McGregor 100% deserved to lose that fight. His execution was poor, but he really lost because of strategy/gameplanning.

He was so freaking heavy and flatfooted on his front foot it concerned me the entire fight. He didn’t move nearly as well as he has earlier in his career - very stiff and sedentary on Saturday. He didn’t throw kicks or check kicks - a freaking staple of his game, something he excels at.

He is among the best at boxing in this sport, but a big reason why is because he is explosive an unpredictable. He was neither of those and a sitting duck trying to lean inside and box a guy that is teeing off on your front leg.

Global or US? Some pretty big markets weren't in lockdown in mid October but are now - lots of people who might have watched at a bar or a friend's house may have purchased separately this time. Also I'm entirely guessing but my gut says that winter will likely have a similar effect, people more inclined to stay home and buy it for themselves if the weather's shitty.

The fight was literally even up going into the final round, but I get that we like to rewrite history to fill shitty narratives.

Anyway, Colby sucks, but Usman is dominant even though he went into the championship rounds and had the fight gone to a decision could've very well lost when he fought Colby.

Fantastic logic.

He deserves a shot because he was the champion and had taken the supposed "dominant' force in the division to 5 rounds. That's why he deserves a shot. I love how we're going to pretend a fight wasn't extremely competitive by showing the last seconds of it.

You brought up Covington in a post that wasn’t about him, clearly because you are obsessed with him because he is a MAGA butt boy

Usman is actually ranked by the UFC as the #4 pound for pound fighter, after Khabib, Jones, and Adesanya, which is almost literally word for word the post that you responded to.

I never said it wasn't competitive, but fact is he lost and hasn't done anything to worthy of earning another shot. You don't often see immediate rematches anymore, unless it's a controversial decision, which this wasn't.

Fighting Woodley was fun and he needed the win, but Woodley isn't on the cusp of another shot either.

Masvidal has more of a case for a rematch now, short camp and a solid enough showing.

I'd like to see Colby fight masvidal for the least likeable fighter title, winner gets Usman rematch.

Jesus fuckin christ.

YOU were the one that said Usman is "dominant."  I brought up Covington as an example of how he's not. In your own words, Covington sucks (indicating that if there's an obsession via political basis here, its not me but I digress), yet he was by any objective measure very much into their fight if not winning it going into the last round.

YOU were the one that went to politics.

Masvidal has openly supported Trump, so the idea that I'd want Colby to get the next shot sort of disrupts, once again, your shitty freaking narrative.

So get the freak off my johnson and stop sounding like a retard when I take issue with one of your opinions because you haven't gotten over whatever I said months ago at this point. Or don't. I don't care.

I never said it wasn't competitive, but fact is he lost and hasn't done anything to worthy of earning another shot. You don't often see immediate rematches anymore, unless it's a controversial decision, which this wasn't.

FFS as much as I like Masvidal and appreciate Colby's MAGA heel shtick, thereby disagreeing with the last sentence, this is a reasonable and hard to argue with take as to why Colby hasn't received a return shot. In a division struggling to come up with anything but rematches at this point for the champ, I would think the guy who gave him his toughest test and was the champ before him goes to the front of the line, but that also would be punishing someone else for taking a fight on six days notice.

His fight against a very faded Tyrone Woodley did nothing for me either, but aside from fighting Masvidal or Burns, or waiting for Edwards, there's not much he can do. I wouldn't fight Leon Edwards on a limited camp either. Even if he wins, the upside is limited considering Edwards layoff, its not hard for those so inclined to nitpick with "well he fought a rusty fighter."

I hate to say it, but Colby is a great fighter. I had bets on Colby to beat Woodley if that fight ever happened for a title, but by the time they fought, everyone realized Colby was clearly better.

Kamaru is a stud. He's #4 P4P according to the UFC behind Khabib, Jones and Adesanya. I think that's fair.

aljo was way too tense/nervous and all over the place that match lmao. it was an entertaining watch, but you could tell he had a bunch of nerves. i think it'll bode well for him during the rematch and like you said, he should be able to regroup nicely.

i think adesanya actually would have pulled that match off by decision had jan not laid on top of him for 5+ minutes the last 2 rounds. jan was just so much bigger than him.

Agree with all of this, they're going to have to continue to manufacture cards where Nunes is the semi-main event (unless they can come up with a catchweight for her to fight Valentina) because her dominance had destroyed any semblance of competition or suspense. She's honestly like Tyson was in the late 80's.

Aljo came out suuuper wild, I was hoping the initial takedown in the first would settle him down but they went right back to their feet.

I think Jan's corner got to him after the third and said that if the fight kept going the way it was going, Israel would win by decision by just staying on the outside and picking him apart. It makes no sense for Jan not to use that size to wear the smaller guy down and put his weight on him to control the fight/gas Israel out.

It was the only fight for Israel to take at the time, and even now he's pretty much stuck waiting on the winner of a fight between two guys he thoroughly pimped out when he fought them in Whittaker and Costa. Who knows though, maybe Paolo is able to lay off the wine if he's able to get another shot.

I was shocked honestly, if only because I figured they'd want to divert traffic to the book, but the only two places that were busy in the casino this weekend were the poker room and the book. So I guess they figured freak it.

It was nice being able to place action on the fights from my phone (stoppages FTW) while playing 1-3.

Apparently Dana tried to entice Khabib to come back by offering him a superfight against St. Pierre.

Two thoughts immediately come to mind;

1. Khabib is truly done, and good for him.

2. If St. Pierre really is interested in a return, as much as I think Covington is justified in wanting the next shot at Usman, FFS give me Usman-St. Pierre plz. Or if Georges wants to move back up to middleweight, that's the one fight I'd be interested in seeing Izzy take on in that weight class considering he absolutely owns that division.

UFC with some incredible #content to end the year

If you don’t like mma or are a causal fan, find a buddy that’s ordering UFC 268 or UFC 269 and go drink at their house for the night, you won’t be disappointed.

UFC 267 - Sat, Oct. 30th

Main Event - Light Heavyweight Title Fight: Jan Blachowicz (C) vs Glover Teixeira (#1)
Bantamweight Interim Title Fight: Petyr Yan (#1) vs Corey Sandhagen(#3)
LW: Islam Makhachev (#5) vs. Dan Hooker (#6)

UFC 268: Usman vs Covington - Sat, Nov. 6th

Lightweight Title Fight: Kamaru Usman (C) vs. Colby Covington (#1)
Women’s Strawweight Title Fight: Thug Rose (C) vs. Zhang Weili (#1)
LW: Justin Gaethje (#2) vs. Michael Chandler (#4)

UFC 269: Oliveira vs Poirier - Sat, Dec. 11th

Lightweight Title Bout: Charles Oliveira (C) vs. Dustin Poirier (#1)
Women’s Bantamweight Title Bout: Amanda Nunes (C) vs. Julianna Pena (RIP)
WW: Leon Edwards (#3) vs Jorge Masvidal (#6) *
FW: Kai Kara France (#6) vs Cody Garbrandt (#7)
BW: Rulian Paiva (#15) vs “Sugar” Sean O’Malley (UR)

*  Edwards v Masvidal should be electric. I knew there was bad blood but recently read an article about how there was an altercation and Masvidal attacked Edwards backstage after a UFC event, in London, and Masvidal had to be snuck out and flown out of the country.

Most looking forward to watching Petyr Yan, Makhachev, and O’Malley fight.

I feel Edwards vs Masvidal won't live up to the hype. Edwards should beat him, and Edwards doesn't put on the most exciting fights. That said, I bet there is a good leadup to that fight, and if Edwards does put him away, his stock might be high enough where the UFC finally gives him a title shot.

268 is insane on paper. Gaethje vs anyone is worth the price of admission. Weili-Namajunas is an amazing fight. Usman-Covington was an amazing fight the first time, even though a lot of people thought it would suck when they first fought each other. I hate Colby, but the dude is a great fighter. Usman is the king, but Colby is one of the few with a shot against him.

If the champ doesn't want to fight, she doesn't deserve a damn thing.

I like Rose, but if you're going to fight that way, then you deserve to lose a tough decision. And so do her coaches for instilling no sense of urgency in her. How does nobody have the self-awareness to tell her, "Hey, this fight might be close, let's make sure we win this round to secure the victory and take it out of the hands of the judges."

Chimaev is a monster. Diaz-Ferguson was a good legends fight. Would have been much sadder the other way.

Jamahal Hill continues to be incredibly fun/exciting to watch and easy to root for.

Glover is as classy as he is tough and will be missed if this is indeed it. Heart of a warrior.

I could have done without Hill defending Dana White hitting his wife.

The key with UFC is to never google the fighters.

Dana White announces it will be McGregor, Chandler as TUF coaches, and they’ll fight at the end of the season, which begins in May.

Damn thought it was gonna be Tony Ferguson

Alex Pereira was already historically great winning two titles, but this cemented him as must-see TV if he wasn't already.

Max Holloway is a damn legend. I love Gaethje, too, but glad he got $600K. He seems like such a great dude, too.

Zhang Weili is awesome. Won by submission and decision in the same fight.

Kayla Harrison is going to be the champion.

Hate seeing Jim Miller get beat up, but Bobby Green is awesome.

Great card.

Last night was one of the best cards I ever saw in my life.

Aljamain Sterling vs. Calvin Kattar wasn't even the main event of the pre-show. Like just absolutely stacked.

Kayla Harrison's delts look like freaking Bill Goldbergs.
