I didn't think they'd take Adams but I like the pick. Watch for a Pryor trade unless they plan on moving him to a box safety

Glad we didn't take a punter.

I saw a Brian Dawkins comp a few days ago, especially considering the culture impact... I really like that comp

That video is even more fun when you make the squealing pig sound from Waterboy.

He must have been second on their board behind Garrett.

Brian Dawkins 2.0

I still have an erection. Awesome pick.

Brian Dawkins 2.0
I've heard Sean Taylor, Eric Berry, and Brian Dawkins. All of these things are really good
-
All of them played more FS. He reminds me more of Polamalu.

Calvin Pryor III
Welcome my brother @TheAdams_era 💯💯 let's get it 😈
Well, at least Pryor is a good sport
-
Not that Duff had to think too hard on this one, but great pick. All he had to do was not move up. Easy choice.
-
Very similar to the Williams situation a couple years ago. Obvious choice and a steal of a pick.
-

Yep. Williams was even more of a steal, but harder pick to make because of what we already had. This one was easier. Next to Garrett, probably the most predicatble pick of the night once on the board,
-
Hopefully we can pick up a corner tomorrow and complete the secondary makeover.
-
I was just praying like hell he would be on the board. I knew Duff wouldn't pass on him. He was the guy I wanted for a long time.
Aside from somebody trading us a fortune, we got a great start to tonight.

Kevin King would be nice

Yep, he was the only realistic guy left that was not worth trading back if he was on the board.
-
I can't remember the last time we were all screaming for the same pick and it was actually made.

We want Sapp?
Marino?
Have we ever all wanted the same guy and had him taken?
-
I can't remember the last time we were all screaming for the same pick and it was actually made.
So true. I was thinking anout you guys when we were on the clock. Like, are we finally going to get one right?
Assuming we keep Pryor, which I hope we do... What kind of defense are we looking at. 3 DL, 3 LB, 2 SS, 1 FS, 2 CB?
I am not opposed to this look at all, because Adams or Pryor can make plays in the run game, but this pick doesn't upgrade us from Gilchrist.
-
Jamal Adams is a true safety. He isn't just a box safety. A lot of these plays he's making against the run are just amazing reads from centerfield. He is one of the best alley fillers that I've ever seen.
The stuff about him being a strong safety or a box safety needs to stop. He flies around and can be used all over the field without missing a beat.

This. He can play with Calvin Pryor...assuning we don't dump Pryor.
Also, I think the last pick everyone loved and wanted before the draft was Wilkerson. People liked Kyle Wilson a lot, too
-

If Calvin Pryor stays on this team, Adams might get him right and save him from the mental mistakes that have caused the inconsistency we've seen from him.
We have a quarterback in our secondary now. A team first leader.

He really is a baby back bitch. We just got the second or third best overall player in the draft class with the sixth pick and he is going to whine that we didn't draft a spread quarterback.
-
Waaaaaaaaah we just took Calvin Pryor 2.0

I saw him making plenty of plays downfield in the video. I like that he protects his body and goes for form tackles rather than kill shots. He always seems to know where the ball is.
He could probably play effectively at weakside LB, SS, FS, nickle CB. Seeing as Pryor was the only player in the secondary that seemed to give a excrement last year, I hope they become fast friends.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. How does this guy compare to previous Jets who set the bar in this position, like Derek Pagel?
Also, did you notice that Goodell didn't announce him as a Safety when called to the podium?

No, seriously, I think that he called him as a D-lineman. Also, I already placed an order for the same suit, and fully intend to wear it at the tailgate this year.
-
Question- why do you think Hooker slid to the mid-first as opposed to Adams? Is it just his tackling that's questionable?

Jon Gruden thinks Jamal Adams was the best pick and the best player in this draft.
-
While I have been saying all along that I hate having to take another defensive player in the draft, getting Adams is absolutely amazing. I was sure he'd be gone by the time we picked. The Bears crazy overreach changed everything.
I read this morning that Pryor feels blindsided by the pick. We'll see what happens now. I don't see dumping him yet. We have no idea when or if Gilchrist will return healthy.
Now I want a corner, offensive tackle, linebacker, and maybe a tight end.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix went three spots after Pryor and is a different type of player. Clinton-Dix is probably a better player right now but it's not difficult to make an argument for Pryor as the best SS in the 2014 draft.
No one thought that Kyle Wilson was the best corner in 2010. Joe Haden went 7th overall.

I'm almost as excited to have Adams the team leader on the team as Adams the player. The more I watch on him, I love what he might be able to do to a defensive locker room as much as anything else.
Imagine if Maccagnan just drafted the Jets' offensive and defensive captains for the next decade with Hackenberg and Adams. We can dream, right?

Pretty much. Brands like Desani and Aquafina are filtered tap water left over from soda production.
And if you are ever in the SW, do not drink Sparklets. It is 'filtered' water from the LA 'river'. Hint, Los Angeles doesn't have a river, it has a storm wash.

i was hoping he'd have a different number in the pros, 33 is such an ugly box looking number on a football jersey.
maybe he wants to emulate another black safety we had that rocked 33 - erik smith.

It's a family number. His father wore it while he played for the Giants in the 80's.

If Dwight Lowery had worn his other number, hed never have gone out of bounds that one time and would have been a god amongst men.

The offense may struggle to score points, but the youth, talent, and speed on defense should keep games close. The defense has a chance to be very special, hopefully for years to come.
Once we have some semblance of an offense in a year or two, back up the brinks truck for an edge rusher or 2 in FA, since we can never seem to draft one.

You don't want to be poor? Work a third job. Problem solved.
It's not as simple as "don't play." These guys have played this sport their entire lives--most of which without the knowledge of what it has been doing to their brains. We're now seeing former players say they won't allow their kids to play and guys retiring early.
The sport needs to change. The problem for the league is how to do it and not change the integrity of the game.

You can't focus on football and forget all the other contact sports. You have to know at this point the risks of playing any contact sport regarding your head. Can't babysit everything. I'm not saying you can't make changes, but I don't want to see flag football.

I'm not forgetting other contact sports, they're just not nearly as popular and I don't care about any of them.
It's not about babysitting. Parents are increasingly not allowing their kids to play football, and that was before the 99% bombshell last week. Something will have to change before there aren't enough kids growing up playing the sport. It's something baseball has had to deal with, and there wasn't even a health concern involved.
I don't think anyone wants to see flag football. That will kill the sport. But there has to be change in the rules and innovation in equipment.

Nobody is holding them hostage making them play football. If playing in the NFL didn't pay you millions of dollars I would bet a lot of these guys wouldn't be playing.
-

Absolutely, but you can also make millions of dollars playing baseball or basketball, and those sports don't have the same CTE risk. And athletes in those sports make a lot more money than football players.
It's going to come down to parents. It's anecdotal, admittedly, but I've already seen parents stop their kids from playing football because of the brain injury risk. Like I said, it's anecdotal, but I have to believe that as more studies are released, the concern will grow.
-

I don't think it will stop the majority of people with real talent from playing the sport. People still become police officers, and put their lives on the line every day for a whole lot less fame and fortune. There are plenty of careers and jobs that have inherent risks, and none of them have the upside that football does. For a lot of these people, football may be the only way to "make it" in the world.
Maybe we see some of these talents move to other sports, but football will still have its large pool of talent flocking to the sport.
Also, you cannot completely (or even mostly) remove the CTE aspect from the game. Its a collision sport. Concussions will happen and collisions will occur frequently. No helmet or form of tackling or rule change will alter that.
-

Totally fine and understandable for parents to choose that. I can't imagine there will be a shortage of players willing to play football anytime soon though. Nothing wrong with innovation regarding safety. What I mean by babysitting is taking contact out of the sport where the participants are willing and know the risks now.

Right. I don't think they'd ever attempt to remove contact from the sport, but something has to change. It's certainly an area that equipment manufacturers can capitalize on, if they can find solutions that reduce risk.

The problem is that they are suspecting that low grade, repeated head trauma is a driver for this as much, if not more than severe, isolated traumatic incidents. I'm not talking about a guy getting whacked in the head, shaking it off and walking back to the huddle normally. I'm talking about linebacker bullrushing lineman 40 times a game and getting whipped around and punched in the head with a stiffarm. Those smaller, constant traumatic events that the average person doesn't have. That's tough to innovate away or eliminate without making it 7 on 7 flag football.

Eric Allen
Jamal Adams says he's all about making the game safer. Says his quote was all about passion for the game. Calls his love for 🏈indescribable
He'll have to learn just to give vanilla quotes from now on.
-
i can't see poor inner city families taking football away from their kids just because of the studies on CTE, when football is one of the only ways out for many of them. people will bring up other sports like the nba, but the nba has a lot fewer jobs to offer than the NFL does, with 50+ positions on 32 teams.
the talent pool for skill positions and for DL/LBs will essentially remain the same. it's other positions that are going to take hits in regards to the talent pool.
-
Eric Lindros was one of my favorite hockey players as a kid. I knew about the "effects of CTE" as a teenager, long before any of these studies or doctors reports. Didn't stop me from playing contact sports my entire life, because those were the sports I grew up playing and loved with a passion. No reason I couldn't have played soccer or basketball or something less violent instead. Football is a violent sport, everyone knows what they're subjecting themselves to when they step on that field. Head injuries aside, you could suffer an injury like Eric Legrand, Teddy Bridgewater, or Marcus Lattimore and never, ever be the same physically. And why is this just limited to football? Are boxers, hockey, rugby, and lacrosse players not subjected to the same inherent risks? One of the most rapidly growing sports right now is MMA, where males and females literally beat the life out of each other in front of cheering fans. Anyone doing any studies to see if getting your skull beaten in has a negative effect on your brain? These guys know exactly what they're signing up for, a violent contact sport where you try to hit the guy across from you like a battering ram on every play. Why are we acting shocked that this has a detrimental effect on physical and mental health? I'm all for making the game safer within reason, but there's a reason the NFL is a zillion dollar industry instead of flag football.

It's going to come down to parents. It's anecdotal, admittedly, but I've already seen parents stop their kids from playing football because of the brain injury risk. Like I said, it's anecdotal, but I have to believe that as more studies are released, the concern will grow.
I think an awful lot of kids would rather play basketball, but if you're 6'2" or under your chances of ever succeeding professionally at it are almost infinitesimally low, whereas normal sized kids can always play football. Baseball is obviously an option, but I think that the skills involved are very different - other than a basic level of athleticism and competitiveness there's really not much the two have in common.
-
I'd prefer my kids play baseball, basketball, or something with less contact. I don't know what I'll do or say when/if the time comes if my kids really want to play a heavy contact sport. I'm hoping they will just enjoy sports, stay physically active in some form or fashion, and focus more on studying. I'd prefer they not play a sport highly likely to get their noggin caved in. You can't predict everything, but you can play the odds.

Excellent read. Something to be excited about. Hopefully there will be lots of media eating crow about drafting safeties with the first 2 picks.
Really smart move by Bowles. Not only does this allow use of the best and fastest players, it also minimizes our weakest spot by taking those OLBs off the field. Our safeties can play the run almost as well, blitz, and certainly cover better.
I wonder if this explains Leo's lack of statistical production. Being at DT, he may be getting doubled a lot.

It is pretty impressive how physical he is... He blew up Miami's RG on his sack, and blew up the TE on one of his TFL. Darren Lee should take notes.

This kid is awesome. He is dancing around with Rontez Miles during pregame and it's just hilarious.
It looks like the defensive players have rallied around him.

I'm starting to back off my initial displeasure of drafting two safeties in the first two rounds this year.
Adams puts himself near the ball almost every play and I have barely noticed Maye this season which is a good thing when you're talking about a rookie free safety.
-
I loved the Adams pick because I thought he checked every single box you would want in a defensive back you would want to take that high. I didn't love the Maye pick because of the position but he's been solid. I was fine with the player.

The secondary is by far the most transformed unit from last year. Adams is everything he was billed as and more, come next season I think OCs are going to be specifically game planning for Jamal Adams and how to avoid him.

Morris Claiborne has actually been really, really good aside from a few ticky-tack penalties.
Buster Skrine is still awful, but he's been extremely dangerous as a blitzer.

For all I was ready to ditch Rodgers this Spring, I think the defensive playcalling has been mostly excellent. I attributed a lot of the secondary's failings to him last season and I still don't think he was faultless, but it really looks like a lot of the problem was the faith that they placed in Revis to still be Revis. The speed of this defense is really impressive, we're still whiffing on tackles - all defenses do - but the difference this season is that if someone misses then there's pretty much always another defender backing them up, because they have the speed to be in the right place.
But yeah, Skrine can freak off.
-
Glad you brought up Claiborne. He's a very solid CB when healthy, and for now, he's healthy.
-

From the very little that I've seen and read during/about last season it looks like it is night and day in terms of how the secondary functions.
I never had a problem with either player themselves, just with the fact thatthe offense wasn't addressed until the third round.
Morris Claiborne has actually been really, really good aside from a few ticky-tack penalties.

I was very happy with the Claiborne signing when it was announced. Who was that nickle corner for the Ravens who had pretty much the same skill set as Skrine?

Revis was basically freelancing last season and Pryor killed us with missed assignments. Getting rid of both of those players was huge for our pass defense.
Having a true commander at linebacker (Davis) and safety (Adams) helps eliminate a lot of mistakes too. Adams jumped on Lee early in the game on one of Ivory's short gains because he made the wrong read. I love that excrement. Hold everyone accountable.
-
Daryl Roberts has also been really solid for us. Hopefully his injury isn't serious.
Todd Bowles hates Burris. He was screaming at him again for freaking up a substitution.

i missed that game. yes hes inconsistent. hes good enough to be a 4th CB on about any team though.
I'm more surprised with how well Claiborne has played. i guess he finally got it put together in DAL just couldnt stay healthy. if i ever have to see Skrine play outside CB again ill scream
Lets hope Daryl Roberts can settle in at #2.
is Claiborne on a 1 year deal?

Yeah, Claiborne is a 1 year deal. I'm not surprised he's playing well, I'm surprised he's playing and not injured.
I think Roberts injured his hamstring, so who knows if he's playing this week.
I think Burris does need to be the 3rd outside corner and still keep getting some playing time. I think he'll improve, but it's clear he isn't ready to start yet.

@TheAdams_era: Woke up this morning so grateful. This game is way bigger than me but I just wanna say I appreciate everyone who has supported me. Keep trusting my process, I will continue to work my tail off on becoming one of the best!

“Everybody was used to losing,” Adams told the website in an interview that took place in the spring but was just published. “You can always tell that vibe. I came in, and it was like everybody wanted to do the bare minimum. They didn’t want to go above and beyond. They didn’t want to take that extra step. They didn’t want to be uncomfortable, [but] to be great, you have to be uncomfortable. You have to be willing to sacrifice and willing to do the little things.

Jesus. This kid is easily the face of the franchise. So much quotable material in there, but without question, this was my favorite:
Adams: Hands down. In a way, it's disturbing because a lot of people would die just to be in your position. Just get paid to play a sport. Just get paid to entertain on a football field. Entertain fans. Jersey sales. All of that. People would kill to be in our position, but a lot of people do take it for granted. It's sad, but it's life. It's not just football. It's life. People take life for granted. You have to be driven. You have to be passionate about what you do. I have a pet peeve: When I go to different jobs or eat at different restaurants—whatever—I walk in and someone has an attitude, it's like, "Yo! You picked what you're doing! There's no point in taking it out on the customers. You had one choice and decided what you were going to do." If you have to start somewhere, be happy where you're starting because you can always make your finish strong. A lot of people just aren't built like that.
This dude just gets it.

Yeah I watched this and it was pretty terrible. Adam's has done some great stuff, but this was him basically hitting some guys, which you can find any defensive player doing. The Fournett tackle was fairly impressive, but the rest was just fodder

Jamal Adams on WFAN - starting this Friday the Jets will have a players only meeting each week for the rest of the season.
-
It wasn't exactly a technical video, but it's fun to see a national analyst get that excited about one of the Jets' young players.
Jamal still isn't a superstar, but he's a damn good player who has clearly taken a step forward, and he's still only 22 years old and improving. So happy he's on our side.

Jeez, dude flies around hitting everyone while everybody else on this defense has a thumb up their derriere, and supposedly it's NBD. Come on people.
As for conducting players-only meetings every week for the rest of the season? That's team leaders stepping up and saying "Yeah, this staff is unable to lead, so we'll just do it for them." Not good.

As for conducting players-only meetings every week for the rest of the season? That's team leaders stepping up and saying "Yeah, this staff is unable to lead, so we'll just do it for them." Not good.
knowing our fan base this will lead to a lot of gossip about what's said during those meetings. fans will be saying that the player only meetings are because the players hate bowles even if by chance there is no truth to that

@Michael_Nania:
Jamal Adams had a drive on Sunday where he single-handedly forced a 3 & out.
Stopped a run that could've been huge for 6
Stuffed a run for -2
Pummeled a tight end short of the sticks for 4 & zero YAC

Sadly, you're probably right. Both of them are better at their jobs than most of the rest of the team.

Kicker from Marist, where Italian Seafood played.
Yup.
-
Darron Lee has been awesome this year too
Yeah, there's definitely a second tier of players. I'd add Enunwa, Williamson, Maye (when healthy), maybe even Claiborne. If we count ST, I'd add Myers, Edwards, Roberts, and Peake in that group too.
I just don't think any of them individually is significantly "better" than the rest of the group. Obviously, they're all different positions, so it's harder to compare but no one rises above everyone else in the way Adams does.
-
Our kicker might be a pro bowler. He should be. Same with our punt returner.
Never thought we'd have a good shot at having 3 pro bowlers and be so bad.
-
#Jets safety Jamal Adams on facing the Bills again after 41-10 loss last month: "Cut to the chase, man. It’s personal. They came in & they whupped us, man. They don’t like us. We don’t like them. So, it’s going to be a tough battle.”

He stinks this year.
Skrine has actually been our best corner, but I hate him and he can freak off after this season.
-
I don't think Claiborne has been that bad. He's had some whiffs though.
Sadly, I agree Skrine has probably been the best corner (unless you grade on a curve and then I'd give it to Roberts who has played well above what I thought he could). But the entire secondary is garbage apart from Adams, and Maye whenever he's actually able to play.

Not among true Jets fans who actually watch the games and have some semblance of knowledge. Adams is an animal. Half the time, I just focus on him. He's usually around the ball and he's always fun to watch.

Jamal Adams for defensive coordinator.
-
I didn't realize Brown will be 31 next year. He's an elite WR, but we'd be buying the downswing of his career and assuming he'll have the same production with a different QB and scheme. I don't think it's a good idea to give up a high pick for a very good WR who is older and potentially dramatic. It would give Sam a great weapon, but what it'll take to get him is too much for maybe a year or 2 more of top flite production.

Antonio Brown can freak off

Bad coaching. Can't blame that on general management.
Nathan Shepherd didn't get enough reps either. There's no reason Bronson Kaufasi should've been out there over him in a lost season.

It does lend some credence to the idea that Bowles was trying to sabotage Maccagnan.
I'll be so happy if it turns out Maccagnan actually is a truly good GM and was screwed by the awful job that Bowles did.

Jamal Adams is 2nd Team All Pro
Eddie Jackson and Derwin James are the 1st team All Pro Safeties

Jamal was a PFF AllPro, and i knew James would be his only competition for AP 1st team (Eddie jackson was a given).
I'm still a little surprised James chosen over him. Chargers did have the superior team, so that was evidently a factor.
Hey we got Andre Roberts on the team, at least. Our first AllPro since Revis, if im not mistaken?

Adams said he was told the person inside the mascot costume was hospitalized on Thursday morning, but the NFL has not yet confirmed that information. Adams said the NFL is not happy with him because of the incident. "He [the mascot] was running around and everybody was booing him, so I said, ‘You know what? Let me go tackle him,’ Adams said. "I didn’t hit him that hard, man. All jokes aside, I didn’t hit him that hard. I don’t know what’s really going on, but they did tell me he’s in the hospital. My intention was never to hurt him. it was all about just a joke but I definitely want to check on him and make sure everything is good. At the end of the day we were out here just having fun and it wasn’t nothing intentionally to try to hurt the guy."

I’ve been very vocal about not wanting Le’Veon Bell but I’m sure Jamal Adams wouldn’t put up with him slacking off and collecting checks

why shouldn't jamal adams make eleventy billion dollars in 3 years if he's as good as he believes he is?
Because every position has its ceiling relative to its value to the team, and a player asking to be paid above the ceiling for his position should not have an agent who supports them sitting out an entire year of their career if they don't get it.

Dude might be an excellent player, but the safety position is valued for excrement.
And the fact that coverage/ball hawking isn't his strong suit won't help him with a monster payday. Also strongly working against him is a weak 5th year option for safeties and a weak franchise tag price for them. His 5th year option is around 10 million and his franchise tag is around 11.
So Jamal can get a monster payday, but for him to get crazy money ala Revis our GM would need to screw up immensely or Jamal would have to take some huge risks like Revis

Calvin Pryor never looked like a special player
Pryor was only special when he lined somebody up and knocked their head off. Which I believe only happened like 5 times here. The rest of the time he was ordinary as a player and clearly didn’t have enough brains, work ethic or physical ability (or some combination of the 3) to become an actual player in the league.

Jamal Adams has collected 18 tackles for loss and 18 passes defended over his first two years in the league.

I just looked around, and while he's the most penalized player in this young season, I don't see any mention of fines for him this week.

According to Jamal Adams, after the game the officials apologized to the Jets’ coaching staff for the penalty. Adams obviously plans to appeal the $21k fine. #Jets

That's why as much as I respect the role of stats, it's hard to use stats to tell every story in the NFL. We don't know what defense teams are running. I don't know who is responsible for certain coverage mistakes.
-
We don't know what defense teams are running.
This is certainly something we can see before and after a play.
There's only so many coverages in football. The same goes for fronts and stunts. Obviously if someone blitzes and that's not part of the play design, we won't know something like that. But just about everything else defensively can be deciphered through film.
-

Stats are probably less telling in football than any other team sport because there are so many variables and moving parts. Certainly much less than in baseball and basketball.

Well he's a safety so we could tag him back to back after dropping the 5th year option on him.
So I'd say it's a fairly safe bet if we want him, he's not going anywhere. That said, having him become a pain in the dick and forcing a trade is at least feasible. But because of the tag we'd have some leverage

I don't buy this excrement for a second. Sorry.
Where the freak would Ryan Clark get the knowledge that Jamal wanted to be a Cowboy unless that was leaked out by his representation? Why would Douglas who had the potential of pitting two teams against each other ever leak that out and destroy his leverage?
IMHO its a pathetic attempt at damage control from someone who I'm freaking tired of hearing from. You play safety. You're not a corner, edge rusher, or quarterback. Stop whining.

None of us know what went on. Assuming all of that is just as bad as what you assume he did.
If our front office in the middle of fielding calls from two teams for his services thought it intelligent to put out there that he specifically wanted to go to one of them, we're fucked. We're so fucked beyond belief.
Ryan Clark isn't putting out that Jamal wanted to be a Cowboy and lying about talking to him about it at the behest of the Jets.
I absolutely do not believe that either him or his reps either didn't ask to move on or weren't putting it out there that he would love to play for the Cowboys. But there's still enough time that this all blows over if only because of the fact that they still have the leverage of having him under contract at either below or at market for the next three years.
Having said that, the price apparently was a first and two seconds. Given that they fully expect to win the division this year and the NFC is pretty wide open, if I'm the Cowboys I'd have paid it.
-
Well, he did remove the team's name from his social media accounts. That's Digital Era whining.

One final item on Jamal Adams, he’s eligible for a contract extension in December and a source said there is an expectation of a new deal sooner rather than later.
Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
Expectation by who 🤔?
There's zero reason to extend Jamal.
He's got a 4th year on his rookie deal, then his 5th year option, then we tag him and consider extending him at that point.
I'd rather trade him in the offseason instead of giving him some bullshit apology contract
Dudes an all pro elite player and the heart of this defense
But it's also one of the least valuable positions, and he's got 2 very affordable years left on his rookie contract. Why the freak would we suddenly give him an insane amount of money when we have all the leverage in the world

I'd rather trade him in the offseason instead of giving him some bullshit apology contract
Dudes an all pro elite player and the heart of this defense
But it's also one of the least valuable positions, and he's got 2 very affordable years left on his rookie contract. Why the freak would we suddenly give him an insane amount of money when we have all the leverage in the world
Depends on what they do. If it’s a straight extension, then nothing happens in his next couple years to change his contract. If they rip his deal up and start over completely, that’s an idiotic team decision.
-

But he's talking about extending Jamal before we can even exercise the 5th year option
And taking the franchise tag off the table.
Regardless were talkikg about adding a ton of guaranteed money to a player who is comfortably under team control for 3 more seasons. I know the franchise tag is a dick move, but the reality is tagging Adams with a tag that will likely be worth 12-13 million is so much better or an option than giving him an annual deal worth 16 million a year for numerous years.
The only way you extend Jamal soon is if this is another bullshit apology extension

Early extensions usually take into account the price of what's left on the rookie contract. Also, the going rate for players is only going to go up. What you sign him for now would be less than what it would cost 2 years from now. Worst case, it's a wash financially and we don't have to deal with bitching and threats to holdout. It's the rare case of a Jets player that you have zero worries about whether he will drag derriere after he signs.
-
Such a Jets fan move to be worried about a players contract size when we have approx 2 players worth paying

But you can't exercise a 5th year option until a player is in his 4th year.
Meaning the soonest you'd want to extend Jamal is the start of next season. However due to the way the franchise tag works and that safety salaries are generally not the greatest, you're saving a decent chunk of cash by not extending him while dramatically improving flexibility.
As of now Jamal is under contract for cheap next year, his 5th year option would be around 10 million, and his franchise tag will likely be roughly 12 million. The highest paid safety will get around 16 million a year.
We have Jamal under team control for 3 years with an extremely affordable number. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever to extend him and suddenly add a monstrous amount of guaranteed money to a player you aren't obligated to do so. We have no idea what the future holds. Maybe the Jets get a rare opportunity to pay an elite receiver, left tackle, or pass rusher.
Regardless we have an incredible amount of flexibility with Jamal, there's zero reason to just give that up
-
dcm do everyone a favor and google the Ezekiel Elliot contract before you type out the same block of garbage again

Zskee was drafted the year before Adams
And is under contract for 8 freaking years
And were talking about giving a guy a huge chunk of guaranteed money when we don't need to

By extending him now, you'd also pull a bunch of future money back to next year and the year after--before you have to break the bank for Darnold. This isn't at all like the Mark Sanchez lipstick contract. It's just good business.
-
I'm getting really tired of hearing how replaceable the safety position is. The best freaking player on the entire defense is a safety and he's all over the field on every play. I'd argue the 3rd best player on defense is also a safety, with only Mosley between them and a wait-and-see on Q.
-

Jets fans:
2017: drafting Adams and Maye with back to back premium picks was a good decision
2019: safeties are replaceable, trade them both!

You'd also be tied to the dude for 6 or 7 years
And if you give him future money now like you're talking about, what's to stop him from acting like Revis?
Yeah that signing bonus getting dispersed over the next 2 years is great, but then you have a guy whose making below average money the final 3 years of his deal. And could start acting all mental and excrement.
It just doesn't make sense to give a guy a new contract, when you have a strong degree of control over him contractually for the next 3 seasons

Taking back to back safeties was a dumb decision. I don't know who claimed it was a good one.

It's not just about safety being replaceable. It's also about how the franchise tag is much more valuable for safeties (and tight ends)
If you franchise tagged Jamal in back to back years it would absolutely come out to less per year than he would get on a long term contract. While giving your team much more flexibility and control. I'm not suggesting you tag him back to back, but the money he will command on a long term deal is so much less attractive than utilizing the short term options available, BECAUSE he plays safety.
The highest paid safety currently gets 14 million a year. The franchise tag for safety is 11.5 million. Tagging back to back would be 13.8 million. Jamal would likely get more than Kevin Byard.
So yes extending him too soon is silly.
-
The football gods must read Jets message boards and say in unison "This is why you can't have nice things."
-
Taking back to back safeties was a dumb decision. I don't know who claimed it was a good one.
Come on man, tons of people here defended it. “He’s a first round value!”
I was mad because I wanted Dalvin Cook, but I was more mad that we spent a high 2nd round pick on a safety after just having spent the 6th overall pick on a safety. We had needs at a ton of other positions.

If Leveon Bell can’t succeed with this trash O-line, Dalvin Cook would already be considered a bust. No running back can succeed when we put absolutely no value into our line besides signing a few mediocre veterans and using late draft picks to patch one together.

I agree with you in principle, but the Vikings had one of the worst OLines in the league last year... and then they invested in it.
They took an OT with their 2nd round pick in 2018 and a C #18 overall and a OG with their 4th rounder this year.

That’s my point. They picked o-line at premium spots in the draft while we continue to take projects and 6th rounders. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that right after we used 2 1st round picks on offensive linemen we were almost immediately a much better team.

And that’s what we will likely do next year with Le’Veon. I also wanted Dalvin, but we have a back that’s as good as he is.

Jamal is way too sensitive. Love the guy but he is so damn sensitive.

Meh. I dont like reading and hearing this stuff either but I just view it as Jamal being sensitive and fed up with losing. He was fed up, then he realized he might get traded to a better situation and got excited. Now he didnt and hes back to being fed up.
I think this can blow over, but I could see Jamal being a pain wanting a new contract this offseason.
-
Lmao at comparing oneself to Tom Brady or Aaron Donald.
There's self-assured confidence and delusion. He's rapidly falling on the latter side of that coin.
Still, nothing less than the package they want, or he stays. He has ZERO leverage.
-
Gase throws people under the bus literally every week. His offensive gameplans are trash fires. Yet there are people who not only want to keep him all year, but next year as well.
Jamal Adams has been the epitome of a good soldier. Every game he shows up and clearly gives 100%. No matter how bad the loss, he stands in front of the media and answers every question. The only thing he complains about is he hates losing (kinda like all of us), and any blame he ever talks about is on himself. He's (rightfully) upset that he just met with his head coach and GM on Friday to be clear he wanted nothing to do with leaving, yet the team would've given him up for a good enough package.
So he's a sensitive complainer?
JFC, we don't deserve nice things.

This, he’s a 23 year old kid that has enormous potential. He wants to be treated like royalty before deserving it. And this is just the beginning. He’s gonna be a pain in the derriere for months to come, you’ll see.

Bell reacted to not being traded by preaching patience. Jamal reacted by being offended at the notion he could ever get traded.

I think people are exaggerating with their complaints about Jamal. Him being butt hurt about the trade thing isn't unreasonable. However I do believe he wanted to be traded to Dallas, and this whole thing that's happening now is him and his agent gaining public support so he can force a trade in the offseason

Wow, is this guy freaking serious? His behavior this season reminds me more of a 16-year-old teenage girl than a captain and supposed leader of a professional football team.

No. He's exaggerating his complains about the situation. Him not wanting to talk to Douglas is absurdly unprofessional. Imagine your boss calls you to his office and you say "no, I don't feel like it, sorry, I'll talk whenever I feel it's time". No. Because I don't think Douglas did anything wrong. I don't blame him for taking calls. I'd take them too.
I just don't blame Adams for being upset about the way things went down. Does anyone here really believe his agent didn't overplay the situation to Jamal? I'm sure he made it sound like Douglas was actively shopping him, whether true or not. Makes it a lot easier when it comes contract time to say "Hey Jamal, we need to fight for that extra million. Remember the time they disrespected you?"

I still can't believe people are getting on Adams' case.
This guy flat out went to Gase and Douglas and told them he wants to be a Jet. How many guys do you think have done that in this team's history? He plays harder than anyone on the field every week. He hates losing just as much as any of us--likely more.
Then again, this is the same board that was strongly against signing that lazy malcontent locker-room-cancer Le'Veon Bell too.

They didn't actively shop him. They have a clearly high valuation of him. Him talking to Ryan Clark and all but confirming what he said about the Cowboys pretty clearly shows that Jamal isn't exactly Mr. Goody Two Shoes here.

Were you there present when Adams spoke to the Gase and/or Douglas? Because there have been a lot of conflicting reports, plus the stuff Ryan Clark reported, which Adams more or less confirmed, doesn't paint him in a positive picture, quite the opposite.
Just trade him to Cincinnati or an NFC bottom feeder come March.

I mean, didn't Robby basically do that?
I think this will blow over if we win next year (and aren't a complete joke down the stretch this year). But if we struggle again next year, I could see him asking for a trade.

Per Connor Hughes...
As Adams talked on Wednesday, Le’Veon Bell, who also found himself at the source of trade speculation, walked around behind reporters. He shouted in remarks multiple times, including, “I’m done with Jamal, bro.” Adams made an under-the-breath remark that Bell was acting “totally different today” than yesterday, and he didn’t “know why.”
-
Per Connor Hughes...
The circus is back in town
-
The hot takes about "safety isn't valuable lol" are really dumb when it's a player of Jamal's caliber, and he can only improve from here. This turn on the value of him as a player is really weird.
However, he does need to metaphorically shut up and dribble

All in all I think Joe Douglas did a terrible job explaining the situation to the public.
I was taught to listen to all phone calls - good
We didnt get the value we were looking for - ehh
Jamal and maye are tradable, Sam is not - seriously?
I hope he did a better job explaining why he took offers to Jamal. It's really simple, I need to listen to teams because if someone is willing to give me 5x your value o need to take it. Sam is our future and he is getting killed out there. If someone is giving me a kings ransom that allows me to set up Sam and this team for success I need to do it.
-
Jesus freaking Christ, the Jets, particularly Douglas, did nothing wrong here. It would be malfeasance on his part not to 1.)Listen to offers 2.) Counter with what it would take to make a deal. That's what any GM worth their salt should do.
Jamal isn't Ed Reed, not the least of which that whiny queynte tried to facilitate his derriere going to Dallas. This Twitter social media cuntery he's doing is damage control by him and his agent. Shut the freak up and play, I don't need to see or hear him the rest of the season.
I am tired of this whole Jets thing right now. They do notdo their job, they get burned, they do, do their job, they get burned. Maybe Douglas will luck into a decent draft, he simply can't be worse than Duff and Idzik, can he?

Not sure if you are responding to me, but I have no problem with Joe Douglas did. To your point, he wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't field those calls.
My point was that his communication with the media in his press conference was not great. He wasn't clear, he wasn't confident, he didn't push the narrative in his favor. It is not the end of the world, but if you decide to discuss what occurred in public you better be able to communicate it well to the New York media.
-
Jamal just has to shut up and play at this point. Can't say it enough, get off the field on 3rd down, win a couple games, then tell me what you're worth. I understand his effort and talent, understand he's not the problem on the field, but he alone clearly isn't a solution either. How much is that worth? He could help his case the most by stopping someone before the sticks on 3rd down. Start there.

This is what it really comes down to, and follows along the point I was trying to make yesterday. We're a bunch of grown-derriere men on a message board and we pee and moan louder than this every week.
Douglas did his job. Adams has to come to terms with that. But it may take a couple of days and a private talking to by someone like Bell. Big deal.
Hopefully, he sits down with Gase and Douglas in the next day or two and gets it all off his chest and they all move on with Adams here long-term.

That did not happen for Adams or Bell, but I happen to believe him.

I have no doubt Douglas and Gase are telling the truth. Nothing worthwhile ever materialized, but Douglas, being dilligent in his job, took phone calls.
Adams just needs to get this out of his system, understand the business of the sport, and get past it. I hope it's here.

Adams in full damage control mode today. He spoke to Chris Johnson and says everything is fine. I’m on the phone so it’s harder to paste the tweets, but he seems to be ready to move forward.

Good. That's exactly what I was hoping for.
We all make mistakes, especially in our early 20s. Get over it, and get moving forward with this team!

The Jamal thing isnt over. Not in this market. His body language is going to be constantly dissected. And if we keep losing, neither will be positive.

At least we know Douglas has his priorities straight.

Jamal Adams showed no emotion afterward Lot of cliche answers. Example: "I'm happy that we can get better going forward. I'm happy that we're playing a dream of everybody's in here. I'm happy that no one got seriously injured. That's something positive we can take out of it."

I watched the postgame. Adams was being pretty deliberate in keeping his emotions in check, even though the beat guys were trying their best to get him to snap.
Cimini, along with everyone else, was trying to make Adams out to seem uncaring. He clearly wasn't (as a matter of fact, he was really upset and said so because he wasn't allowed to go back in the game after passing the concussion protocol). He was just keeping himself composed to avoid the nonsense from last week.
Cimini is trying to stir the pot while trying to play innocent.

Honestly, I don't even blame the actual reporters themselves (Cimini, Mehta, Costello, et al). It's a natural byproduct of working for a media outlet in a city with far too many major news outlets. Everyone needs an "angle" to sell.
Mehta was an absolutely fantastic reporter when he was still with the Star Ledger. Once he crossed the Hudson to work for Daily News, he had to have a completely different approach--which became even worse after the layoffs and "restructuring" that turned it into a legitimized version of TMZ.

Jamal Adams (8.5 career sacks) is just a half sack behind Kerry Rhodes (9.0 w/Jets) for the most by a Jets DB
He's also tied Rhodes for the most tackles for loss by a Jets DB (23)

Someone please explain to this guy that safety just isn't a premium position:
This jumps out to me every week- value of tackling at the safety position. Study explosive plays (run & pass) & you’ll see a boatload of missed tackles from safeties. Ball skills, range & instincts are important but tackling is essential. Keeps 8 yd play from becoming 50 yd play
-
Jamal is reminding me more of Keyshawn as time goes by. Keyshawn was also highly drafted, brash, opinionated and had no taste for being on a losing team. We didn't have Twitter and Instagram then but the guy wrote a book as a rookie. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way sometimes, but always got it done on the field. I think you need guys like that, regardless of their position. Safety, like WR, isn't a position you typically build around, but fast forward a couple years, when the rest got into place, and there was Keyshawn as a leader and important piece of the best team we've assembled, possibly ever.

Adams is under jets control for a long time
Dudes almost certainly getting traded.
Honestly I don't care about his drama and excrement. The dudes an amazing player. The issue is if Sam fails this entire franchise fails. And Adams is the most valuable trade asset while playing one of the least valuable positions in the game.
He's 100% a difference maker in a game. But if picks for him can get Darnold 2 or 3 offensive linemen for the next 10+ years, well Darnold can be a difference maker for a franchise.
Not to mention there was no way we could ever keep Adams and Maye long term

We can build an offensive line without having to sacrifice Adams. It's not the fault of the current GM obviously since he just got here, but it'd be nice to hit on one of these guys that we take in the middle rounds every once in a while.
I said it in another thread, with the obvious exception of Darnold, there is no player this organization needs to see and properly evaluate more than Edoga.

Updated your post.
Not many players are drafted in the first round each year that have as much of an impact on the field as Jamal.

Jamal is a tempo setter. You need guys to challenge other players and to say good is not good enough.
Its human psychology. 95% of people dont give 100% at work everyday. People need motivation whether its through competition, inspiration, or the like.
Jamal provides this for our whole team.

We can, but how quickly and how good can they be?
We literally need to upgrade every single position on the line, this is Darnolds second season and he's regressed substantially.
This franchise has two options. Either risk giving up key staple players (Adams) with hopes that Sam succeeds. Or risk not giving up enoguh assets with hopes Sam doesn't fail.
If it takes 3 more seasons to successfully rebuild our offensive line Sam's fate will very likely have been decided by then.
Not to mention we need to somehow get him a legit #1 receiver in that time frame as well.
The urgency is there with Darnold, it's time for this franchise to gamble everything on his success or failure. Because without him this team goes nowhere

You start with a left tackle and center, we likely can get the LT at the top of the draft. Once you do that a lot of guys can play guard between them, same on the other side. Might not all be all-pro but a lot better than what we have now, immediately Bell would be Bell again, Darnold will be a lot better. That's next year. By another year you can have a solid line, Darnold is 24, Adams in his prime. It doesn't take that long if you draft more than one good player per year.
Do that, you hope Herndon is the real deal at TE, a lot of guys can be productive WRs if not a true #1.

You're assuming that LT is BPA when we are drafting
And regardless we still need a right tackle as well.
On this teams "urgent" needs.
Left tackle, right tackle, center. #1 wideout, pass rusher, #1 cornerback.
With left and right guard, a #2 corner also important but not quite as urgent
We're not filling all those needs in one year, it's a huge risk to Darnolds career if we spend 3 years fixing the offense around him.
I absolutely realize Adams is a perennial all pro player, and I would never suggest trading him just for the sake of trading him. But if this team can get a legit bounty for him, a mid first rounder and 2 more high value draft picks (a 2nd, and maybe a late 2nd or early 3rd)
That seriously has to be considered, because Darnold is the entirety of this franchise. And the pieces around him are causing him to fail

Different situation and all, but trading Abraham was a key part of our 2006 rebuild.
That being said, I don't want to trade Adams. We can allocate the resources we already have on the OL without sacrificing another part of the team.

Sure we can, but it's a risk. Is it enoguh, and fast enoguh? Hell if our first round pick is an LT and he doesn't pan out, and we didn't invest extra resources into the OL. We might as well have Darnold join Rex and Sanchez on ESPN now
This team has to go all in on Darnold. And so far we've basically handed him a bag of dicks.
We either make up for it, or become less relevant than the Bills

This team needs to accumulate talent. We don't have to go all in on anyone. Yes, helping Darnold is the most important thing this team can do, but if the rest of the team sucks, it doesn't matter.
If Jamal can get us two 1st-round picks and something else, you have to consider it. Anything less, and I would build around Jamal on defense.

I mean 2 1st is unlikely.
But Jamal and a 4th for a middle 1st and two 2nds or something like that would be absolutely freaking huge
Regardless we have two very talented safeties that we can't afford to pay long term regardless.
And we have glaring needs elsewhere.

I sometimes wonder if you ever actually watch Jets games, and if you do if you really understand what you're watching.
You've pretty much got it entirely the wrong way round. While every position on the line could stand an upgrade the interior is by far the biggest problem; both guard positions plus center are a disaster. Beachum isn't great but he's serviceable, he's still only going to be 31 next season and he won't be too expensive to bring back, while Edoga is a rookie so can't be judged yet and Shell might still have something if they get someone other than freaking idiot Pollack running the show.
For me, the optimal move is to draft Thomas and put him at RT, kick Shell inside to guard (he's big for a tackle and could definitely play interior), draft the center from Wisconsin with the unpronounceable name because Wisconsin's linemen are all good and there are no good free agents at the position, and hope that Winters gets healthy and remembers how he was actually good that one season.
-
Beachum is going to be an UFA. Who knows what kind of contract he lands.
Center is a diasaster I don't disagree there.
But I'll take Lewis and Winters over giving Beachum a big contract and having faith in whoever to step up at tackle. Though I think we could upgrade on both of them inside.
Winters has been shitty and hurt, but I think he has a fairly solid chance of coming back next year even though we save almost 8 million if we cut him
And none of us know where or why all the confusion on the OL is coming from. It seems like none of them have a freaking clue what they are supposed to be doing on any given play
-

Lewis has been garbage the last two weeks after a promising start, his career has been dogged by injuries and mediocre play. Winters is running out of credit, especially given his salary; he might be able to be good again but no one's putting money on it at this stage.
Again, we can stand to upgrade every single position on the OL but right now Beachum is our best starter and LT is our least significant problem. Thomas can play either side, hence my suggestion that we draft him and put him at RT with Shell moving to guard.
Clearly the coaching is a huge issue. Dennison was doing better with less talent.
-
I don't think Shell is coming back. He was drafted by the old regime. The new regime made him the first scapegoat for the OL troubles early this season. I don't see the Jets bringing him back.
Edoga, Winters, Harrison and McDermott are the only OL under contract next season. While it's probably unrealistic to get 5 new OL, we will probably try to get 2-4 new starters.

Lewis could probably come back on a one year deal for next to nothing.
Beachum is probably getting a 3 to 4 year deal with starter money
I don't think I'd want to invest into Beachum like that

Why would you rather have cheap excrement linemen than OK ones on OK money?
Because free agency starts before the draft.
You don't know who will be available when you are on the clock.
If you give Beachum big money then draft an LT it's awkward.
If you give Lewis excrement then draft a guard, then he's just depth.
And they all need to be replaced

Have you looked at the draft? We're not taking two tackles. In an ideal world we'll take one with our first pick, then go back to OL with one of our second round picks.
Beachum is going to be value for money on his next contract and we're going to need him.

If we draft Andrew Thomas in the top 5 he can play right tackle and Beachum can play LT. I believe I already explained this. And if Tyler Biadasz falls to our second round pick, or if we can trade back into the first for him, we'll have our center.
Beachum - Shell - Biadasz - Winters - Thomas looks like a wet dream.

I doubt Beachum settles for less than 3 years of solid guaranteed money

Your post was insanely vague and generic.
How? I laid out exactly which positions I'd start with (OT, C), where I'd get the hardest one to fill (OT, top 10 pick), how it would affect the existing players (Bell, Darnold, whoever plays OG). Then I looked at the year after next, how old our main players would be, and who we'd have here to help them. Did you want a mock draft or something? Of course if you miss on the draft picks we'll continue to be a bad team, we've done that for years, but what is your plan to fix the O line, beginning with the tackles?
Your plan seems to be cut and trade anyone of value to save money and keep starting over. We've done that two or three times now since our last playoff appearance, how is that working out for you?
-

That being said, I don't want to trade Adams. We can allocate the resources we already have on the OL without sacrificing another part of the team.
This is a great comparison, actually. I think the difference with Abraham was that he cared more about getting paid than winning, and he was hurt a lot. If I remember correctly he skipped the playoffs while Pennington was out there with his arm falling off trying to will us through the games. So while he played an important position, he was less reliable and less of a leader to commit that much money and years to. The fact that we turned him into Nick Mangold (I think) was a rare stroke of luck for this franchise. Would have been interesting if he was still here when Rex got here. #KeepRex
Unless Jamal turns into more of an Abraham than a Keyshawn I think trading him is nuts. The idea is to add top young talent, not to get rid if it.

Wasn't the strong rumor also that Abraham wanted to play in Atlanta, and the Jets were trading him to get value for him before he walked freely?
Adams has flat out said he wants to not only stay, but help lead this team to a Lombardi. He gives 100% on every single play. By all accounts, he works just as hard in practice as in-game.
You keep guys like that. They're foundational players and you build your team around them.
-
Pretty interesting trade history for Abraham's career:
April 18, 1998: Traded by Chargers as 2000 1st round pick (13th overall) to Buccaneers for 1998 2nd round pick (59th overall, Mikhael Ricks)
April 12, 2000: Traded by Buccaneers as 2000 1st round pick (13th overall) with 2000 1st round pick (27th overall, Anthony Becht) to Jets for Keyshawn Johnson
March 22, 2006: Traded by Jets to Falcons as part of a 3-team trade. Broncos sent 2006 1st round pick (29th overall, Nick Mangold) to Jets. Broncos sent 2006 3rd round pick (93rd overall subsequently traded, Dominique Byrd) and 2007 4th round pick (121st overall subsequently traded, Marcus Thomas) to Falcons. Falcons sent 2006 1st round pick (15th overall subsequently traded, Tye Hill) to Broncos.
So Keyshawn eventually became Nick Mangold.

Wow, that's pretty good.
Reminds me of Bill Cartwright--Knicks drafted him in 1979, played 10 years here, traded to Chicago for Charles Oakley in 1988, Oak played 10 years here and was traded to Toronto for Marcus Camby in 1998. If they dummies who took over didn't trade Camby we could still be in business.
-
I would think whether Adams throws a bitch fit about getting a new contract like Clark said is a huge factor as well.
If Adams is willing to play his 4th year, 5th year option, and franchise tag the next 3 years then I can understand keeping him.
If he thinks he's getting Elite money after this season, the Jets absolutely have to trade his derriere.
Personally id trade him Eitherway, but those two factors would make the decision a whole lot easier or harder

So should we trade him right now for 2 second rounders?

Whatever DCM thinks we should get.
BTW I was fed up with his bs at the trade deadline too. I have overcome that though. lol

The guy talked his talk. Then he went out and walked it. He felt he was elite and should be treated that way. He wasn't wrong.

President Mal has more sacks in the past 3 weeks (6) than Leo Williams has since the beginning of last season (5).
-
The dude is excellent. But he feasted against the worst offense in the league, and a bad offense missing 3 linemen.
Jamals the best player on the team. But Sam succeeding is more important.
Hopefully Jamals up to two 1st and a 3rd for him and a 4th or 5th

You're still on this train? What do you have against keeping an elite young player?
-
I was against him acting like a baby but he’s totally redeemed himself
-

Outside of 3 games this season Darnold has struggled tremendously because he has no talent around him. He's getting eaten alive behind the worst offensive line in football. And our insanely overpaid running back is statistically performing as one of the worst in the league, because this OL is complete trash. And the only wideout worth anything is Crowder. The fact that Demaryius Thomas has been our second best wideout says plenty
We need to stack the offense around Sam. And Jamal is the best way to do it
-
Revis was probably the greatest corner of all time, a much more valuable position. Jamal is one of the best in the league. With Sanchez failing the Jets had 2 great seasons under Revis and absolutely nothing else.
We can get far more for Jamal than we did for Revis because of his rookie contract.
If the value is there, you have to pull the trigger. Darnold is more important than all else
-

Here's where we disagree, Jamal is not the best way to do it. We have enough draft picks to fill holes, the key is using them to draft better players than we have been. Getting rid of one of the only good players we have creates a new hole while taking a gamble at filling others. If he was old and overpaid or wanted out (like Abraham), then maybe, but not when he's in his third year and is a team leader. That's the kind of player we're trying to get, not get rid of.

We need an entire OL, #1 wideout, and multiple corners desperately. We don't have the draft capital to fill that many holes. Best case scenario is we get 3 day 1 starters, and that's being optimistic
-
I was ok with moving Jamal earlier when he got all worked up about the trade rumors but he seems to have put that behind him and he’s playing the best football of his career now. It would take a blockbuster trade to consider moving him now. On a team devoid of talent it’s hard to move one of the best players in the league for the sake of some draft ammunition when we already have a (potential) franchise QB in place.
-
We need an entire OL, #1 wideout, and multiple corners desperately. We don't have the draft capital to fill that many holes. Best case scenario is we get 3 day 1 starters, and that's being optimistic
We also don't necessarily need to fill every hole with an obvious answer in one offseason. That's not really realistic. We will need to sign/trade for guys like Tom Compton or Alex Lewis or Brian Poole to play roles next season.
And if you trade Jamal, then safety becomes another need. And we also would have lost an All-Pro safety who makes up for a lot of the other issues our defense has.
Now as Joe Douglas said, there is a price on every player who isn't a franchise quarterback. If someone offers two 1st-round picks with one of the picks being pretty high, you have to think about it. But we would need to get blown away to trade Adams.
Plus, it doesn't look like Adams is as unhappy as he was a few weeks ago. Amazing what winning a few games can do.

It's not just about filling needs. It's about putting Sam in a place for success. And the offense is horrifically bad. Losing an all pro player hurts, but letting Sam spend another season struggling for his life hurts more.
Plus we're not paying two safeties 25 million + combined
Might as well trade Adams for a bounty and extend Maye. Of course rhe price has to be right for Adams. And he's going a long way to helping us achieve that

You are constantly worried about how much we will play Adams and Maye. That's a question for 2021. How many other players on this team will we need to pay big money to in 2021? Why can't we keep Adams and Maye? Every team has salary cap space. While that makes it harder to bring in top free agents, it also makes it easier to keep your own guys.
If we were in a salary cap crunch and had a ton of young players we wanted to keep, that point would have more merit. But we don't.
The most important thing for the Jets is for the team to succeed long-term. That likely would require Sam Darnold reaching his full potential, so diverting resources to the offense is a good idea, but we are going to have four picks in the top 105, so that's a good place to start.
-

That's not the best case scenario, and if you trade Jamal you're down another starter, your best defensive player, creating a huge hole. You can get more than three good guys in an off season, start with the line and it makes the QB and RBs better.
Forget the #1 WR, that's the final piece of it, we don't need that right now. WRs become available all the time, because they are divas and if the rest of their team isn't clicking (like ours) they're pretty useless and become expendable. Beckham, Cooper, Gordon, how many you want to name?
Block for your QB and running game and you'll get production from the Crowders and Andersons of the world, especially if we have good TEs like it appears we do. Find me an OT, C and a CB in the draft, get our LBs back from injury and keep Jamal, the CBs won't be as exposed as they are now.
-

Can Maye stay on the field for a season before we worry about blowing up the team to pay him?
-
Dcm I understand your perspective but I think your viewpoint is one that is is relevant if the trade happens but not as a possibility we should be asking for.
Most first round picks dont turn into probowlers let alone all pro players. If a team gives us a top 10 pick and 2 2nd rounders so be it. But replacing Jamal is too difficult to do to trade. Even if safety isnt as important as o line

Unless we plan on franchise tagging Maye, we extend him after this season or trade him this offseason. You don't wait for players to become UFA to extend them
And regardless you don't invest insane amount of money into safety. You wanna pay one safety big money fine, but not two
-

And most QB's end up as bust.
Darnold looked like a young inexperienced franchise QB last year. This year we gave him a bunch of clowns and he looks like Sanchez.
If we're not going to surround him with quality pieces and set him up for success we might as well start hyping up whatever QB is coming out in 2025 or 26.
Robbie Anderson is freaking terrible. Demaryius Thomas is borderline crippled. Our offensive line looks like a pile of excrement held together with glue and yarn. And our 13+ million dollar running back is giving us running numbers that would embarrass most UDFA.
Darnold has absolutely nothing around him. The expectation that we're gonna trade some 7tb round picks and draft his key players in the 4th or 5th rounds is laughable.
This offense is devoid of good players. Either fix that fast or risk him becoming the Samchez
-
And I'm not suggesting that you just give Adams away. You trade him it's because a team is desperate and is willing to give up a heaping bounty.
Jalen Ramsey got 2 late 1st rounders and a 4th.
Because Adams contract situation, leadership, and age, I think he can get more than that. A mid 1st, and two 2nds for Adams and a 4th or something is the kind of value I think he can get.

Ramsey plays a premium position.
I love having Adams on this team, but I’ll admit, I do agree with some of the points you’re making. Darnold should be priority number 1.
Derek Smalls is right about one thing, this isn’t going to get fixed in one offseason regardless if they decide to trade Adams.

He does
But he's also a malcontent headcase who got into a fight with his coach and only is under contract for one more year for 14 million.
Adams on the other hand is a role model, team leader, playing for pennies next year, has a nonguarenteed 5th year option and a very affordable franchise tag after that.
I mean who knows what other teams will think. But Adams contract situation significantly adds to his value. That can't be understated enough. A win now team that's cap strapped could afford to give up assets for a stud that won't have significant cap ramifications allowing them to make other win now moves.

If someone blows Douglas away with an offer he can’t refuse...sure, then it’s good business. But I don’t think Adams should be shopped around. The guy wants to be here and is playing out of his mind. The fanbase is already on the cusp of jumping ship...why stoke that fire if you don’t have to?
-
Don’t understand the fear of paying Maye and Adams. They’ll make like 25 million a year combined, MAYBE 30 million

Well fortunately Adams was already shopped.
So teams will reach out and inquire. Allowing us to shop him without shopping him
And if he doesn't like it, well at least the draft is months before the season starts

That's 13 to 15% of the whole teams salary cap. On safety.

And it would be one of the most quality units in the NFL.
If we had a fantastic team and a ton of young players we had to resign, it would make sense to reallocate resources. But we dont. And if we wanted a proven player to replace Maye in FA, it probably wouldn't cost that much less.

The alternative is if we keep letting players go for picks and sign their replacements in free agency we’re going to get gouged for cap space anyway. Normally you try to fill these gaps in your roster with draft picks but history has shown that we’ve been dogshit at doing that.
Maye is a nice player but he won’t command a huge salary. Jamal is going to be the highest paid safety when he signs, but you hope they work some cap magic to spread out the hit.
-
Jamal is more than just an average safety anyway. To not pay him because he's a safety is madness.
-
To me the issue was always about paying a guy an exorbitant amount of money when he doesn't want to be here. Or going through the process of having a malcontent on the team while we hold onto his rights because you can't let elite talent like Adams pass through your franchise without recouping significant assets if you've crossed that point of no return. I don't like how Adams handled the deadline, but I've maintained since it happened that this isn't a situation that cannot be overcome, like say Trent Williams in Washington. Joe Douglas did nothing besides what I would expect any competent NFL general manager to do.
If he wants to be here, is willing to be on board for the continued rebuild and will sign on the dotted line, even if its a deal (and it will be) that guarantees he's the highest paid safety in the NFL, pay him and don't look back. You can't run your franchise thinking that you're incapable of finding the other pieces you need without sacrificing a potential cornerstone to do so. Have faith in this new regime that they can actually find talent in the mid-rounds because you have no other choice. The fact is, this is not a team that is in a position to have to worry about how they're going to hand this guy and that guy a second contract, because most of the talent level sucks. Our biggest FA coming up in the off-season is a receiver that's likely going to have to settle for a one-year prove it deal.
And if you don't have that faith in your front office to begin with, why be on board with trading a sure thing for lottery tickets if you don't think the scouting department and front office can utilize those tickets and maximize their value?

It's embarrassing that a thread about this team's best player was injected with concentrated AIDS.

But I don't blame a lot of people who were ready to move on on deadline day when his team is leaking to ESPN that he'd love to play in Dallas.
He didn't handle it maturely, or well at all for that matter . He's also 24 years old so maybe he gets a mulligan. As long as the relationship can be salvaged to where we aren't offering a major investment towards someone who doesn't want to be here, by all means, keep him.
I mean if Dallas was willing to give up Zach Martin, I still think you do it. The development of the most important player on the team dictates that you make that move.

I really don't want to turn a thread dedicated to Adams into yet another "What the Jets needs are" thread.
That said, this team needs to draft multiple offensive linemen. Free agency should be used to try to get a corner and a pass-rushing threat. I think between Crowder, the tight ends, and probably bringing back Anderson, they can float on WR next year.
Obviously, if someone says "Hey, we'll give you 2 firsts, 2 seconds, and this year's third" yeah, you thank him for his service and ship Adams out.
But the idea that we should trade him because we shouldn't pay him? That's just nonsense. Who do you spend your cap money on if not your best players? Another Buster Skrine? Maybe Trumaine Johnson part 2? Or save it so we can bring the next Ryan Kalil out of retirement? I guess Nick Mangold is chillin on the couch! Come on.
-

Jamal's impact is way more than "lul he's just a safety" and idk how people can't see that at this point.
Maye is meh though
-
Also, regarding the whole "attitude" thing. I think it's ridiculous to hold it against him.
1. He's 24 years old. I'm willing to bet every single one of us was still immature at 24.
2. He literally had sat with Gase and Douglas and they assured him he'd be part of the future just 2 days prior. I'd feel betrayed and upset too. That's like being assured your job is safe, then being laid off 2 weeks later.
3. The only other thing he's ever been emotional about is losing. And his intensity has clearly motivated his teammates who aren't named Trumaine.
I've said it a bunch of times, and I'll keep saying it: you build your entire team around people/players like Jamal Adams. Darnold is the key to everything by virtue of being a talented player at the most important position in sports. But you make a guy like Jamal Adams the centerpiece of your defense and the role model for everyone in all 3 phases to base their game on.
-
Jamal's impact is way more than "lul he's just a safety" and idk how people can't see that at this point.
Maye is meh though
He's our best pass rusher. He's our best defensive playmaker. He's our best safety. He might be our best cornerback if we played him there.
I like Maye, but he's not good enough to trade Adams because we're worried about cap space. If Maye gets hurt this Sunday, the entire narrative around him changes.
-
Jamal's impact is way more than "lul he's just a safety" and idk how people can't see that at this point.
Maye is meh though
The issue isn't Jamal, it's Darnold.
This offense is devoid of players. And we're going to help the face of our franchise with 1 maybe 2 early draft picks and a bunch of jags and castaway rejects.
Adams is elite but he's elite at a position that's not as important as most. If he was an Aaron Donald or someone named Bosa that's different. But for a safety, I'd rather gamble to help out Darnold.
And Robbie Anderson is worthless. He's a freaking gimmick player. I don't want to bring him back. Over 60% of his yards on the season came in 2 games. Otherwise he doesn't do excrement. If he wants to come back as a #4 sure he can fill a role doing that. But as a #2 I'd rather have freaking DT back
He's a track star who can catch. Get Darnold someone that can play football
-

I want to win a Super Bowl. I think you can build an elite defense around Adams, and I think you can alternately build a defense good enough to win a Super Bowl around Adams. On a team like this I don't feel comfortable parting with a guy like that. Any picks we get for Jamal in the offseason aren't going to be high in the draft most likely, and that would be the only scenario where it would even begin to make sense to move him.
I like Darnold obviously, and the team needs to build with more pieces around him for sure, but there are only two years left where he's cheap on his rookie deal after this year. It's most likely too late to pull the trading for picks gimmick in the sense of getting players who will be ready for a Super Bowl window. Darnold needs to sink or swim on his own merits, with as much help as possible, but it takes a whole team to win a Super Bowl, and moving the heart and soul All-Pro talent doesn't seem to be that type of move to me. We could build an amazing team around Darnold, but if he's not good enough, in the modern NFL it probably doesn't matter.
The right move would have been moving Quinnen if we were moving anyone on the defense for a haul anyway.
-
I wonder if Steelers or Ravens fans think that trading Polamalu or Reed would have been a good idea if they'd been offered enough.

If the Ravens had traded Ed Reed in Flacco's second year, Flacco would still be the Ravens starting QB. Fact.

He's not either of those players yet, and in a pure hypothetical if we could've gotten a pro bowl interior lineman who's still only 28 years old the makeup and priorities of the team dictate that it's a move that couldn't be turned down. Hence why I don't blame Douglas for making that ask.

Of course. I don't think anyone wouldn't value Zack Martin over Jamal Adams for us right now. My point was more about the claim that safety is a non-premium position; I think that if you have a player who is truly elite, regardless of position a good coach can build the unit around him.
-

Yeah a dude with 2 career ints is Polamalu and Ed Reed. You're literally comparing two of the best of all time who played in a completely different era. Those dudes were ball hawks in an era where running the ball was far more valuable. Adams is a hard hitter and all around very good dude, but isn't special in coverage and isn't anything even close to a ballhawk. 5 of his 6 sacks come against the worst offense in years with a rookie QB and a terrible offense missing 3 starting offensive linemen.
I wonder if a team would leave Peyton Manning or Tom Brady devoid of offensive talent around them if they had a safety like Jamal Adams
Adans is one of the best safeties in the league. But people think he's freaking Jesus because he just pissed on a dumpster fire

Congratulations on completely missing the point, as usual. BTW, Jamal Adams currently has half a sack less than Polamalu had in his career.

Side Note: I was reading the other day that the NFL record for sacks in a season by a safety is 8. Adams has 6, with quite a few weeks to go.
I expect he ties or breaks that record before the season is up

Peyton's first Super Bowl win came because a safety, that's right a freaking safety, got hot and was the best player on his team including Peyton that playoff year. Much like DCM's argument Peyton was a useless bag of dicks in the playoffs in 2007.
Bob Sanders a freaking safety was the team MVP and they wouldn't have won excrement without him.

This is so stupid and a perfect example of useless stats
5 of his 6 sacks came against 2 teams with shitty OLs, missing starters, with rookie QB's who have struggled
Adams is a beast on the field and one of the best safeties in the game, but the stats are misleading as freak. He had 2 games of feasting against a dumpster fire.

Not everything has to be so black and white you know

Of course his prowness for interceptions is undeniable he should be caught up to Ed Reed if he plays football until he's eligible for social security and keeps up this insane rate
-
How is it possible he has the most votes of any defensive back? Doesn't anyone realize how non-essential the safety position is?
How does a running back have the 4th most votes of any player?
Probably because this is the Pro Bowl and it's for for freaking rejects.
Jamals one of the very best in the league at what he does. It doesn't change that the position is probably less valuable than almost every other defensive position
-

You keep saying this but it depends how you play the position. He makes it more valuable by adding other elements to his game.

he can only eat what's in front of him.

I think we're past this at this point. When the time comes, pay the man. Closest thing to LT we've had on our defense going sideline to sideline and being on the ball since I've been watching the Jets, which is a long time. Yes, LT was a LB, spare me.

Gastineau is several levels of poopchute above Adams, AINEC. Adams is loved/liked/respected from all accounts by his teammates, Gastineau was hated, almost universally.

did you see the exchange? it doesn't matter if one is rich and the other is a HS coach, the carr brother is an absolute clown. he came at jamal for no reason, and then when jamal dished him some right back, decided to play the victim card, all the while clinging to the 'I'm a HS teacher' excuse while using 'then' instead of 'than'. the absolute state of that guy

You see, I always loved Gastineau because of skills on the field.
Back in the day I was limited to delayed highlights and never got to know of some his exploits off the field and the fact that he would have eaten himself if he was chocolate. He was part a great team in an era that will always be special to me.
Stories of him being unpopular with his team mates were exagerated but I recall a play off game against KC when the great Bob Trumpy who was calling the game with another great Don Crqui couldn't resist pointing out Mark sitting on his own on the sidlines;
"There's is Mark Gastineau sitting with his buddies...."

That was a front 4 for sure. Klecko could play anywhere on the line and be all pro, Gastineau, then Lyons and Salam. It would be fun to have a front like that again. Gastineau if he wasn't such an poopchute would have been a star.

On a more positive note, Jamal Adams is a freaking godking. Dude was in real pain literally all game, and refused to take a seat because he didn't want to let his brothers down.

Jamal Adams coverage ranks (among 39 safeties w/30+ targets):
Yards after catch per reception: 1st (2.9)
Yards per reception: 2nd (7.5)
Yards per target: 2nd (4.5)
Yards per cover snap: 2nd (0.31)

- 23 pressures (1st)
run defense:

I think his point was that people don't buy Jordans to play in. Although they are a basketball sneaker they are more of a shoe for fashion and "the culture". While Jordans were the pinnacle for shoes back in the day my experience wearing them (2002+) was that they were always super heavy and never the greatest.

Which means he doesn't get the 5th year rookie option on his contract
Not to mention his APY is more than the franchise tag for safeties. So I imagine the bears got some very friendly contract language in there.
Regardless he's a year less than Jamal contractually and the tag is always an option
I'm not suggesting the team trys to screw Jamal, but he's under team control for 3 more seasons
And before I hear excrement about how he's a professional, all pro, leader etc etc. Let me know how things worked out with Revis and Wilkerson who both were home grown All-Pro players who ended up crippling this franchise by being horrendous contracts for the team

“He’s really good, let’s get rid of him!”
Only way I could see the Jets trading him is if Jamal has ridiculous contract demands just to get off of this team and becomes a nuisance. I don't think he will. I'm sure he'll be a bit snarky at times, he's a hothead. The Jets will have to overpay because they suck, but I think they'll do it. They may not get to an agreement this year, but probably next. They should at worst offer to make him the highest paid safety in the league. If he doesn't take it, I'd be fine if the Jets wait. It's a delicate balance between the Jets risking having to pay more in the future vs. Jamal risking injury or something else derailing his value.
-

How did Revis' contract cripple the team? Tanny worked his magic back in '10, and we got rid of him before he even became a problem. Wilkerson on the other hand, broke his leg and then phoned it in once he got his money. I don't see how Jamal is any way comparable as it's unlikely he will fall off a cliff like with Revis between '15 and '16 or has demonstrated any of the POS attitude traits that Wilkerson did.
It's a freaking apples to oranges comparison.

But I thought Gase (despite being effusive in his praise of the player at every possible turn), was trying to drive him out of town? z
Me too.
Weird that GM Adam Gase would try to extend him, right?

Weirder than when GM Joe Douglas listened to offers for him during the trade deadline?
But lets's blame Adam Gase for Jamal Adams being upset with the Jets for a day or two.

Just to clear this up... we’ve had small discussions thus far, not in detailed talks yet, just talked about it. With that being said, I fully expect to be extended this offseason. I want to be in New York!
Extend Joe Douglas

To me this sounds like nonsense. Probably trying to lay down some public perception to make it seen surprising if he doesn't get extended

That was from a fanpage haha, it’s not Adams’ account. Still funny though.

Joe Douglas: “The plan is for Jamal (Adams) to be a Jet for life.” He says they’ve had preliminary discussions on a new contract. He wouldn’t elaborate. #Jets
Extend Joe Douglas

I clicked on that expecting bad trade offers, and the trade offers were worse than I ever thought. And each offer kept getting worse. The last one was the kicker. A 2020 2nd-round pick and a 2021 4th-round pick. Can't even give us a 2020 4th-round pick? Gotta defer that to 2021?

Does that guy not watch football

freaking Anthony Miller and a third round pick lmfao

I can understand a bears fan not watching the Jets. But does he not understand how contracts work?
He somehow thinks Adams has no value because he's in the last year of his contract.
He's on the 4th year of a rookie deal with a 5th year option and very affordable tag after that
