Goodbye?
Sounds like he wanted to stay. If he really does, he should be fine with taking the $10M AAV that Hicks and Sevy took. Or less.
I love Didi, but we’re probably better off with Gleyber at short. I’m sure we could find a way to make it work, but we already have a jammed infield and other guys on the roster bubble that we have to find a spot for or trade. It really sucks for him that his contract year came during his Tommy John return/recovery.
-
It really sucks if Didi leaves, but like SFD said, there's a big logjam in the infield. Personally, I'd prefer to go into camp with Didi at short, Gleyber at 2B, make 3B a competition between Urshela and Andujar, let Voit, Ford, and Bird battle for 1B, and keep LaMahieu as the everyday gives-someone-the-day-off man.

“CC Sabathia is making one last Yankees pitch — to get Gerrit Cole in pinstripes, that is.
The recently retired Yankees hurler said he has spoken “many times” with the most coveted free agent in this winter’s class, and that “if you give that lover of the older lady enough money, he’s going to want to come here.”
“Me and Gerrit Cole have spoken at length many times about me pitching as a Yankee as a West Coast Guy,” Sabathia said. “This is crazy, this is shaping out… like the same offseason I had.”

Yankees and Brett Gardner are already talking about trying to stay together contractually. Why not? It’s been a fantastic marriage for both. Longest tenured Yankee had career highs in HR (28) and OPS (.829) in 2019.

I'll say "I like it" with the caveat that who knows? Cleveland has churned out some really good pitching and they were trying to give him the job he got with the Yankees to stay.
Cone would've been a "feel good" story, but at the end of the day, who knows if he has the ability to teach pitchers? I love him in the booth, but that doesn't necessarily equate to being able to translate the data to guys mechanically.

Anyone else know that Josh Bard got fired?
Carlos Mendoza has been named the Yankees' new bench coach.
Mendoza served as the Yankees' infield instructor in 2019 but will now slide into a dugout role for manager Aaron Boone. Josh Bard, the Yankees' former bench coach, has been dismissed from the organization.
-
I wonder if all of these coaching shakeups are coming from Cashman?

Rays general manager Erik Neander has been named Executive of the Year.
Cashman finished 2nd in voting.

I don’t care about these awards, but the 2 Tampa writers didn’t have Boone on their ballot and some other voters had Francona on there instead of Boone. That’s an absolute joke.

I hate to take away from an overachieving year for Baldelli's Twins, but FFS, Boone managed a record-setting-injury-list roster to 103 wins in the regular season, and a division title.
All the awards that sportswriters are allowed to vote on are BS, and always have been. That goes all the way back to Ruth not being a unanimous HoF inductee and all the snubs along the way afterwards.
Players and managers/coaches should vote on awards.
-

He also had over $100M more talent on his roster than Minnesota, the Twins' most expensive player wouldn't make the Yankees' top five. You've got two bullpen arms making more than the Twins' highest paid player and your deadline roster fill in bat would be a top 5 salary in Minnesota.
Yankees managers will always have to do a lot more to get awards recognition because they start from a base of having a lot more to work with.

Use that rationale to explain how Baldelli got it over Cash. Cash had a payroll for $54M, no player on his roster made more than $5M, and they had to play in the AL East instead of Central.

And they did better in the postseason than Minnesota. No argument from me, I didn't say that Baldelli deserved it over Cash.

Baseball America’s grades for 16 year old Jasson Dominguez:
Hit: 60
Power: 70
Run: 70
Fielding: 60
Arm: 60
5 tool player.
-
For comparison, Fangraphs Gleyber Torres scouting report from 2018 when he was 20/21:
Tool Grades (Present/Future)
Hit - 40/55
Power - 40/55
Run - 50/40
Fielding - 40/50
Throw - 55/55
-
On both sides of the plate, Dominguez has reportedly hit exit velocities over 110 mph. And speaking of speed, he ran a 6.3 60-yard dash. Putting that into perspective: Billy Hamilton, the fastest man in baseball, runs a 6.2 60-yard dash.

-
You’re not talking about the Fangraphs version, are you?
My high school friends and I have run a Yahoo keeper league since we were seniors in high school (05). We allow five "minor leaguers" that must be drafted in our yearly minor league draft and they graduate upon our own set criteria. Once they graduate you either need to let them go or use a regular keeper spot on them.
It's a huge competitive advantage if you can get a guy locked in on your ML list without having to burn a keeper spot. For example, Judge was on my minor league list his rookie year. Keston Hiura hasn't hit enough AB's for him to graduate so he'll be front and center on my list this off-season.
-
The Yankees have spoken to Austin Romine’s agent about a potential return, but they believe Kyle Higashioka is ready to be the backup. Higashioka is out of minor league options.
Fully on board with this. I think Romine is gone, some other team is gonna give him decent money because catchers are scarce. He's average to below average though. I also think Higashioka has a really good chance to be better offensively and defensively than Romine.

That’s dope. I’m in a league that’s a 40 man dynasty roster with salary cap and full access to minor league rosters. Got Judge, Andujar, Clint, Gleyber when they were young and cheap. Got Tauchman, Gio and Ford for nothing in auctions before they blew up this past season.

We disagree about Romine's talent. I think he's a better player on both sides of the ball than you do, but we do agree that he's gone. Someone is going to pay him to be a starter.
I think Higgy will be fine as the backup though. It really depends on how often they rest Sanchez. If he only fills in once a week, with a late-inning sub here and there, I don't think we'll notice any difference.

That is SICK. I play OOTP to satiate my baseball nerdness on top of doing fantasy, but this sounds like something that would be so much fun.
I tend to agree with Alio on Romine, and I'm surprised there isn't a team out there that wouldn't give him a shot as a starter.

RIP Bird
-
Here’s 2 things I’ll say about Romine:
1) I think he’s a starting caliber C within the league (mainly due to lack of talent at the position)
2) Romine plays much better when he gets regular ABs. This is true for most players, but he’s clearly performed better when he’s had the starting role when Gary goes down vs getting to play once a week.

100% agree with all of this.
And honestly, I worry more every day that the luxury tax will play into decision making. If it's a matter of getting a top tier pitcher or paying Romine, you have to pursue pitching. Higashioka is a good enough fallback plan.
Weirdly, it looks like the plan for the Yankees is to give Sanchez more than one day off a week. That would've increased the value of Romine, but again, you have to prioritize.
-
Bird was a really unfortunate story. Screw Ellsbury because I never wanted him here in the first place, but Bird could've been great if he'd been able to stay healthy.
Letting him go (barring a trade) makes sense though. You have to protect more valuable prospects, and either spot he'd fill (1B or DH) are already logjammed.

Hal has finally realized if he spends some money, he can win a title.
I love that Andy Pettitte joined Cash, Boone, and the new pitching coach to pitch NY to Cole. "Listen Gerritt, I'm a Houston native, who left the Yankees to go home to pitch. I went back. Sign with NY. Trust me."

I'm told #Yankees have a seven-year, $245 million offer on the table for Gerrit Cole. Would be a record-setting contract for a pitcher, surpassing Greinke’s $34.4 million AAV. Question is whether #Dodgers or #Angels will go to 8-9 or even 10 years.

IT'S HAPPENING!!!
Typically when the Yankees are laser-focused on acquiring a free agent, they get their man (like CC and Tanaka).
If I had my choice of breaking the bank for a Machado, Harper, or Cole...Cole is my no-brainer.
I really hope Cash gets it done...he's clearly coveted Cole for over a decade.
-
Welp.
Given the contract that Straus signed with the Nats, I gotta believed the minimum for Cole if the Yankees want to limit term to 7 years is going to be 280.
I know they want 10-I'd be very very careful about giving any pitcher a deal that carries them through age 39. Really hope we can lock him in at 8 years.

I mentioned being really happy Andy got involved the other day. You have to believe him talking about leaving to go home to Houston, only to choose to go back made a difference.
Also, Buster Olney reported that the "turning point" that got the Yankees over the top was Hal himself putting in the 9th year. Pop's gotta be proud right now.

Over the past two seasons, only Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer have outdone his 13.4 WAR and his 2.67 FIP, while only deGrom and Justin Verlander have bettered his 2.68 ERA; no starter in that span has outdone his 37.3% strikeout rate. In 2019, Cole set a record for an ERA qualifier by striking out 39.9% of all hitters while also leading the AL with 326 strikeouts, a 2.50 ERA, a 2.64 FIP, and 7.4 WAR.

And while I'm in daydream mode, let's see what it would take to pry Nolan Arenado from the Rockies. Colorado is supposedly listening to offers.
I think I remember reading they were looking for outfield help. I wonder if a package of Frazier, Andujar (to replace Arenado there), and a prospect would be enough? Honestly, he's one guy I'd even be willing to part with Garcia for. Imagine an infield 1st-to-3rd of Voit or Ford, LaMahieu, Torres, Arenado, and Gio Urshela as a "utility" guy (pretty much like DJ last year--and he recently said he's willing to play anywhere).

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlbpa-files-grievance-against-yankees-for-26-million-owed-to-jacoby-ellsbury/
Last month, the Yankees released Jacoby Ellsbury and shortly thereafter news broke that the team was refusing to pay the veteran outfielder the remaining $26 million on his contract. Ellsbury, who signed a seven-year, $153 million deal ahead of the 2014 season, has not played a game since 2017 due to various injuries.
The oft-injured Ellsbury, in the view of the Yankees, seems to have broken part of the collective bargaining agreement that states a player can't get work-related injury care from a provider who is not affiliated with the club. The Yankees didn't authorize Ellsbury to get medical treatment from the Progressive Medical Center in Atlanta. Ellsbury maintains that it was a non-baseball injury and, thus, he didn't need the club's consent for such treatment.

Good. I know you attributed last year to a lot of bad luck, but that's an excessive amount of bad luck.

Would've liked to have seen us go after Cervelli as a backup.
I'm not convinced that they have enough depth at catcher with Higashioka as the backup and 806 year old Kratz at AAA.

Good. I know you attributed last year to a lot of bad luck, but that's an excessive amount of bad luck.
I think just by default they’ll have less injuries next year so we’ll never know. If they retained the S&C staff and we had a relatively healthy season next year, is that because they’re doing their jobs better? Idk if I buy that.
Regardless I would absolutely have made this move because they don’t have much to lose. Their entire program needs a top to bottom look at how they can improve.
Will be interesting to see if the Jets make a similar move.

Yeah, that's fair too. I just think if you look at the number of injuries, and the large number of muscle-related issues, you have to wonder if there was too much emphasis on the strength side and not enough on the conditioning. Torn ligaments and broken bones are hard-luck injuries that happen at random. Tearing a bicep, or pec, or core muscles you'd think are more avoidable.

I think part of that issue lies with the type of roster we have - Judge, Stanton, Voit, Gary are probably more prone to muscle injury than Tyler Wade or Gio Urshela

That's also really fair.
I guess, unless they have a ton of muscle injuries even next year with a new staff, there's never really going to be a definitive answer.
I just hope they stay relatively healthy and get those early November parades going again.

That's actually pretty cool since they DFA'd Adams recently and would've just lost him for nothing otherwise.
Sucks that Adams joins the likes of Hughes and Joba and Baneulos as highly touted prospects that just could never get it all figured out.

Yanks sign Chris Ianetta and Nick Tropeano to ML deals w/invitations to Spring Training.
I like Tropeano as organizational depth and the first guy up at SWB in case they need a spot starter. Especially with Happ still on the roster I can't see him winning a job on this staff out of the gate though (figure its going to go Cole-Sevvy-Paxton-Tanaka-Happ with German coming back in June and Montgomery also waiting in the wings as an option).
I would assume Ianetta vs. Hishi will be one of the stories of spring training.

Other than the obviously Merry Colemas, this has been a pretty boring offseason. Granted, Cole is a monster fish to catch, but I feel like they still need another big splash.
I resubmit my call to trade for Nolan Arenado. I'd like to steal away Hader too, but Arenado makes this team unbeatable, I think.
RF Judge
2B LaMahieu
3B Arenado
SS Torres
DH Stanton
C Sanchez
1B Voit/Ford
LF Tauchman
CF Gardner
Rotation: Cole, Severino, Tanaka, Paxton, Happ/German/Montgomery
Pen: Chapman, Britton, Ottavino, Kahnle, Green, Loaisiga, Cessa, Holder
Bench: Urshela, Estrada
Backup catcher: Higashioka
That leaves the new extra roster spot up for grabs between Deivi Garcia, Tarpley, or Heller.

Also, CC refuses to wear a suit, which YES generally requires unless the heat is too high, in which case it's polo shirts and khakis.
I would love to hear Sabathia do some games.

I dunno
I don't have any problem with listening to him on the broadcasts, but I've been listening to him since he was doing the radio broadcast with Sterling. I think he's a good conversation starter. I could see not liking him if you listen to his radio show though. The commercials alone are irritating.

He’s my favorite athlete I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Getting to watch him play every day for 20 years was freaking amazing and I knew in the moment I was getting spoiled.
I was at his last game, and even though it was a meaningless walkoff win, it was the best sporting event I’ve been at, bar none. Magical.

Miguel Andujar has been told to prepare for spring reps at 1B and LF in addition to 3B, Brian Cashman told the @YESNetwork yesterday.
-
Talk about getting Wally Pip'd. Dude was runner-up for Rookie of the Year, got hurt the following spring, now might have no job.
I really think his biggest value to the Yankees at this point is in a trade before spring training. If he's coming into camp just fighting for at-bats, his value will plummet, especially if he struggles with a new position.
He's a fun to watch hitter, but if you can't get him ABs, you're doing a disservice to both him and the team.

Andujar and Frazier have never had lower stock in their careers. Andujar due to Defense/injury and Frazier due to Defense/mental makeup.
They’re both supremely talented hitters that are young and under team control, so I think the best move is to let them hit and hope they rake. There will be an opportunity at some point - remember Andujar Wally Pipp’d Brandon Drury just 2 years ago. I don’t think you’d be doing anything other than giving them away just to make a move at this point in time.

Maybe you're right. Frazier's value is definitely not great right now, and a return from injury probably does devalue Andujar.
Best-case would be they hit camp and both hit great and look good in left/1B. It would be a great "problem" to have if Frazier looked like a legit Opening Day LF and Andujar looked like a legit 1B. Move Stanton to full-time DH, then you probably look into trading Voit (unless he can be sent down). I like Voit, but I think Andujar is a better overall bat.

Voit has top notch on base skills, Andujar rarely takes a walk. Andujar is a better contact hitter, but Voit has relatively good contact skills for a slugger.
Andujar - 606 PA in 2018
.297/.328/.527 - .855 OPS
Voit - 658 PA in 18/19
.280/.384/.517 - .901 OPS
Andujar is a doubles machine (47 in 2018!) which really kicks up his slugging, but Voit gets on base so much more that he’s the better overall player right now imo. They’re both absolutely awful defensively and would both be DHing instead of playing the field in an ideal scenario.
Edit:
.100 point split between BA and OBP puts Voit into the conversation for elite on base skills
-
Over the last 2 seasons, Voit ranks 26th in MLB BB% at 13.1%
For comparison:
1) Trout: 19.2%
3) Juan Soto: 16.2%
13) Judge: 14.8%
16) Hicks: 14.5%
22) Mookie: 13.5%
26) Voit: 13.1%

The doubles are big to me. On base is great, but doubles do a lot of damage. A walk is as good as a hit, but a double is better than anything but a home run to me. They drive in all but the slowest runner from any base, and they keep at least one runner in scoring position.
Honestly, other than the defense, you really can't go wrong with either at first. And if Stanton can actually play left field regularly you can just get both in the lineup anyway. It would get really interesting if Stanton shows he can play out there every day and Frazier looks good too.

Slugging % (and subsequently OPS) factor in doubles and Andujar only beats Voit by 10 points. Voit hits HRs at a higher rate.

I know it hard to top last year's injury plagued season, but prepare for the Yankees to be much healthier this season.

This is a quality hot take, but I disagree.
Regular season yes, Postseason no. We haven’t really had issues getting to the playoffs, but never really had a postseason caliber rotation which has hurt us.
-
I didn't expect many or any to agree with me.
Cressey is somewhat of a celebrity my industry and regarded as the best sports performance coach for overhead athletes out there. For crying out loud, he has his own training shoe through New Balance. His resume with professional baseball players is squeaky clean, particularly with pitchers. (Kluber, Scherzer, Hand, Corbin, and Thor just to make a few)
I was actually shocked (and equally stoked) was he jumped ship from CSP to work in the Bronx. The Yankees had to have thrown a ton of money at him.

Nice! I'm a little surprised anyone here even knew who he was.
-
I read about him after the hire, and his resume is obviously impressive. I thought the Yankees allowed him to continue to run his company and even still work with other teams' athletes as a condition to his accepting employment?
While I'm with SFD in terms of yeah, Cole is by far the key, imagine if last year's team didn't set a record for IL stints? If Cressey can keep everyone healthy, this team could threaten the wins record.

Saw an article yesterday proposing a Yankees/Rockies trade.
Rockies->Yankees
Nolan Arenado
Yankees->Rockies
Frazier
Urshela
Andujar
Deivi Garcia
That's a massive give by the Yanks, especially if they have to take on Arenado's whole contract, but I'd still do it. There's the whole threat of "Will he stay for 2 years then opt out?" But given he's got a full no-trade right now, you'd assume he'd only come here if he actually wanted to.
It would also hurt giving up both Urshela and Andujar, but neither is comparable to Arenado at third, so both would be looking at either 1B or being a backup.
Losing Garcia would suck, but right now, the rotation is Cole, Severino, Tanaka, Paxton and then whoever excels among Happ, Montgomery, and anyone else who gets a shot. Garcia will be in SWB for the near-term at best.
I do hope that if a deal like that happens though, the Rockies at least have to kick in some cash against that contract.

I would do that deal, and actually think it’s pretty fair for both sides. I think an NL team would be hesitant to play both Andujar and Frazier in the field, but they would freaking rake at Coors. Gio at 3rd would be a cost effective replacement of Arenado, you could probably hide Andujar at 1B and Frazier in RF and just try to mash every other team to death. It’s not like the Rockies are gonna be winning the pitching/defense battle with their current roster composition anytime soon
Seems like the prospect Gurus aren’t as high on Deivi as we had hoped after his amazing year last year, so in the right deal he is tradeable. My stance on that probably changed after the Cole signing. Right now the only untouchable in the minors is Jasson Dominguez.
-

Wild stuff:
“If my quick Statcast query is correct, Aaron Judge has struck out looking 166 times in his career, 37 of which were missed calls. That’s over 22%!
7 of those were 3-2 counts. If we convert these to walks and wipe the other 30, Judge’s career line goes from .273/.394/.558 to .280/.405/.573. His K% drops from 31.6% to 30.0%. This doesn’t even account for miscalls earlier in the count which put him in a hole.“

Crazy. The missed calls on Judge are ridiculous. To have such a huge strike zone in the first place, and to consistently have it widened is a testament to just how great a hitter he is.

Paxton out 3-4 months

In fairness, this injury was from last season, and he played through it. It just recently flared up again and forced the surgery. Supposedly, it's a big reason they wound up keeping Happ.
Cashman said the No. 5 rotation spot will be decided between Jordan Montgomery, Michael King, Jonathan Loaisiga, Luis Cessa & Deivi Garcia, calling it an “open competition.”
It has to really be between Cessa, Montgomery, and Loaisiga, right? The other two can be stashed in the minors. I know Cessa definitely can't. Not sure about Monty or Lasagna, but it would be hard to push either down to promote the other two, no?
-
In my opinion:
Gumby is the front runner and will get the job if he’s healthy through ST.
Cessa and Lasagna are more effective in the bullpen. One or both of them will be needed to spot start or be the long man out of the pen at some point in the season.
Deivi should spend some more time in the minors. He wasn’t as sharp in AAA compared to his complete dominance of the lower minors and the scouting publications aren’t as high on him as his stats indicate. He’s still a top prospect, but I have high expectations for him and he wasn’t as highly ranked as I had hoped and there are a couple question marks about him.
Michael King is the dark horse to unseat Montgomery. Only threw 46 innings in 2019 but was absolutely dominant in 2018 and poised to get his chance at the rotation in ST before he got hurt. He did make it back up to the majors last year to toss a couple innings (think he was the callup when Dellin got hurt)

Sweeney literally just said “Higashioka is an elite pitch framer”
Hmm, something to watch. I knew he was above avg defensively.
I said earlier this offseason that I thought he could match Romine’s production both offensively and defensively. I also think he has a higher ceiling in both categories.
-
According to Jack Curry, when Cashman hires Beltran for the FO consultant postion last year, he asked him directly about the rumors of the scheme in Houston. Curry said Cashman got nothing in terms of an answer from Beltran.
Don’t know how reliable that is, but Cashman usually doesn’t BS. If true, just shows how tight that Astros ship was in keeping the cheating in house.
People want to trash Mike Fiers for ratting (that fat POS Ortiz), but that started when he was in Oakland when he was helping young pitchers on how to not get shelled when pitching against Houston. That’s extremely commendable. Obviously once the cat got let out of the bag, the Athletic and Rosenthal approached Fiers.

Interesting. You know I was a big Romine fan, but I'd love to see Higgy turn out better. The real question to me is, "Is he good enough to be an everyday player if Sanchez isn't a long-term C?"
Which brings up the interesting tidbit that Sanchez has changed his catching position, which hopefully will make a big difference in his defense. Then it's just a matter of his health.

I wouldn't be surprised if Beltran kept it secret. Why would he tell his potential employer that he literally cheated them out of an opportunity to win a title?
I'm not going to use the word "hero" because that's not an appropriate use of the term, but Fiers breaking the story was bold and needed.

He didn't pitch last year and we won 100+ games. We need to make a TDL move or our playoff rotation is pretty questionable tho

Have to keep my Betances and Sevy shirseys on the shelf this season. I have CC but it's not the same. Still have Tanaka. Need to get a Cole

If you wanted to feel better about our rotation
I just searched the Red Sox depth chart and they don't have a 5th SP listed
Sale
ERod
Eovaldi
Martin Perez
Looking at their bullpen dc it'd be Hector Velasquez or Brian Johnson
-
It's unreal. We went from Cole, Severino, Paxton, Tanaka and the best of Happ, Montgomery, and a handful of prospects to Cole, Tanaka, Happ and a bunch of prayers. Montgomery so far seems fully recovered at least.
From unstoppable juggernaut to suddenly human in a month.
I know SFD doesn't like blaming S&C staff for things, but last year's staff can freak right off.
-
Yeah dude, I’m not putting blame on anyone for Severino blowing up. He had the highest average velocity of any SP the past few years. Those guys are much more prone to TJS, in a lot of cases the training staff can’t prevent that.
After 2 straight years of 32 starts and 190 IP (under the previous S&C staff), Severino came into ST and hurt his rotator cuff. Then he hurt his Lat. then he hurt his forearm and elbow. Guys get hurt. Saying injuries should have been prevented is a dumb take because that’s just not possible.
Luis Severino had notes in his scouting report as a prospect that he carried some injury risk because of a violent delivery and max velocity. Maybe they were right.
-
Also, lol at blaming anyone other than James Paxton for his injury history
-

Injuries are a part of sports. There's no valid argument that injuries are completely preventable.
However, the Yankees set a record last year for injury list players. It's hard--I'd argue impossible--to be that "unlucky."
Also, lol at blaming anyone other than James Paxton for his injury history
And yes, he's made of glass.
But again, if it were just a couple of injury risk/prone guys I'd be with you on the "bad luck" front. But record-setting is hard to argue simple bad luck. And obviously, the front office at least partially agrees, since they overhauled the training staff.
-
Honestly though, I'm shocked German wound up losing time to suspension rather than the IL. Talk about a violent delivery.
-
We’ll trade you guys Ryan Borucki...always injured ...will fit in nicely here
-
We’ll trade you guys Ryan Borucki...always injured ...will fit in nicely here
I'm pretty sure every time a Yankee goes on the injured list, Carl Pavano and Jacoby Ellsbury get complimentary dual rub-and-tugs.
-
How come we don’t blame NFL training staffs when a guy blows out his knee?
Freak occurrence, right?
A guy throws a ball thousands of time a year at 100mph and we’re going to act surprised when his arm gets hurt? When these type of injuries are at an all time high around the league?
Other than telling him to throw 90 instead of 100, not sure what the training staff could have done for him. Again, you’re completely ignoring that Severino had perfect health under that same training staff previously.
I’m not going to take that point seriously unless you look at these injuries on a case by case basis.
-
I’ll tell you right now, someone like Gary, Judge, Hicks, or Stanton is going to get hurt this year, and it won’t have anything to do with last years training staff or this years training staff. It’s because players get hurt and some players get hurt more often than others. You’re a real poopchute if you blame a player for getting hurt though so it’s much easier to wish death on a strawman nameless employee in the training department.
-
Honestly though, I'm shocked German wound up losing time to suspension rather than the IL. Talk about a violent delivery.
LOL
German has had Tommy John before.
They got him in a trade for Nathan Eovaldi. Who has had Tommy Johns twice. And a 3rd elbow injury he missed 1.5 seasons with.
-
During most years, I don't blame anything other than bad luck when guys get hurt. When it's a year that the team is dipping into third-string players, yeah, I think something is wrong.
And again, the Yankees front office clearly felt something needed to change as well. SFD, you seem to be the only person who thinks the training staff was completely innocent.
Guys are going to get hurt. Absolutely. That's sports. But, and I don't know how to stress this enough, when you're setting records for injuries, something is wrong. Either your training staff is doing a poor job at the C in S&C, or your organization has a real problem with acquiring glass dolls.
LOL

If he can't get an opportunity to play every day with Judge and Stanton out for the time being and Hicks out for a substantial period of time, they need to stop sitting on this kid already and deal him for an arm.
The way I figure it is with those two out, your OD lineup will have Frazier in left, Gardy in center and Tauchman in right with Andujar as the DH. Infield of Voit-DJ-Gleyber-Gio.
Also, there was a fleeting rumor yesterday of the Yankees and Mets discussing Andujar for Matz. At least from my perspective, I'd want a hell of a lot more than Matz if I'm giving up a guy that went .297 with an OPS of .855 with 27 home runs and a shade under 100 rbis in his rookie season, and is only hitting 25 years old.
Apparently everyone is pleasantly surprised at how he looks in left, though that could be classic Yankee building up a guy to ship him stuff.
-
Judge and Stanton out for OD
Awesome
Brett Gardner will have to play every day again, along with Tauchman, Frazier, and Andujar platooning the corners. Not terrible, but certainly not what we were envisioning a month ago.

If Cashman deals Andujar for Matz straight up, we riot
It'd be absurd. Matz can't stay healthy. If they were willing to sweeten the deal somehow, then I'd be interested to see what other pieces we're talking here, but there's no way a straight up deal is in the best interest of the organization, even with the pitching depth taking the hit they've taken.
-

Even healthy, I don't think adding Matz is a big enough addition to counter the subtraction of Andujar.
In the offseason, I advocated trading Andujar, but 1) it was for someone like Arenado and 2) thank goodness we didn't given the state of the lineup health.
Trade vetoed

I want no part of that deal, but it really isn’t as bad as you would think.

Cashman is an absolute force
I never gave him enough credit. He's managed to both be competitive and build a farm system at the same time. Until recently, I discredited him with things like "Of course you can be competitive when you can afford to field an All-Star roster" or "The farm system is a result of trading Miller and Chapman--who they were destined to bring back anyway" but now is a different story.
Even while still paying Ellsbury and acquiring a disappointing Stanton and all the injuries, he's still finding diamonds everywhere. I was completely wrong about Cashman.

Him and Lou Lamoriello are on a pantheon onto themselves in terms of the best GM's I've ever seen relative to my favorite teams. It's not even close.
Krause made some savvy moves for sure to supplement the team around Jordan (trading up for Pippen, drafting Grant), but he didn't draft the GOAT, and did more to break up a dynasty with his antics than anyone else associated with the Bulls. Imagine having the ego to tell your (then) five-time championship winning coach "I don't give a freak if its 82 and 0, you're out after the year."

The root cause is from September. It was exacerbated and became painful recently.

Judge said that he felt “a crack and pop” in his chest on the diving catch attempt last September. With the postseason coming, he had a shot and kept playing. He thought it had healed by November when he resumed workouts.

Oh, my bad, thought you were pulling a Tommy.
As for the topic, it's an "idea on the table" for Manfred. It would allow the season to go further into the year, possibly ending in October rather than September, and the playoff teams could all compete at neutral sites in southern states where the weather would be warmer, presumably into November. It seems the key is players really want as close to 162 as possible to not mess with their stats.
It would be kind of cool to watch the Yankees in the World Series on Thanksgiving...
Also, an idea on the table is a return of scheduled double-headers, which I would love to see.

Brian Cashman added (barring no setbacks over the next 3 weeks) he expects James Paxton, Aaron Hicks and Giancarlo Stanton to be good to go as well

Gerrit Cole, 65 pitches, 1 run (Andujar opposite field HR). On the YES broadcast yesterday announcers were saying how the team is looking for ways to get Andujar's bat into the lineup. Previously all his MLB starts were at 3B/DH. Yesterday he was in LF. RHP prospect Clarke Schmidt impressed.

Brian Cashman may have just reeled in his latest monster catch.
Roderick Arias, the top international free agent of the 2021 class, was recently spotted working out wearing a Yankee cap. Fangraphs calls him “the consensus top prospect” in the 2021 class. The switch hitting shortstop is said to be a five tool stud with a current player comparison of Francisco Lindor.

@DanJFederico
Luke Voit was acquired by the Yankees on this day two years ago and has played in 158 games ever since, slashing .277/.381.515 with 36 HR & 96 RBI over that span. Giovanny Gallegos has turned into a very effective reliever for the Cardinals but chalk it up as a W for the Yankees

The way Stanton's going I'd move my 3rd baseman and SS to the right of 2nd base before he kills someone.
1st AB: 116 mph rope
2nd AB: 117 mph rope
3rd AB: 96 mph line double
Judge clutch ftw

The point they've been harping on with Stanton about this being good for him was something I was thinking about before the "season" started. The lack of a crowd putting pressure on him is letting him be the guy he can be. A healthy Judge and Stanton in the lineup is scary.
I just hope Gleyber is okay. Supposedly it's just a contusion and he's day-to-day.

@Feinsand
The Yankees placed Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and recalled Thairo Estrada from the Alternate Site.
-
Estrada sent to alternate site - Clint Frazier rumored to be called up.
https://nypost.com/2020/08/10/yankees-calling-up-clint-frazier-for-another-big-opportunity/
Clint Frazier is about to receive another major league chance.
The Yankees on Monday announced that they were sending Thairo Estrada to their alternate site. They did not announce a corresponding move, which will come before Tuesday’s home game against the Braves. But two sources told The Post the plan was to promote Frazier.
-
Calling up Estrada made no sense at all. If your DH goes down, and you have an overcrowded infield, why would you call up a utility guy--when you already have Wade--and leave a couple of good hitters behind? Even with Andujar's struggles he made more sense than Estrada. But I really want to see Frasier get his shot.
-
Apparently if they keep Andujar in the minors for 8 more days they get an additional year of control

Yeah that made no sense. Now Thairo is down and Frazier is up.

That makes sense then. If you can keep an extra year in this short season, I'm okay with leaving him down. It still doesn't make sense with Frasier though.
TO DETROIT
I've never been convinced Boyd is a great pitcher. I wouldn't give up Andujar or Frasier for him. If Blake really sees something he can capitalize on, I'll bow to his judgement, but I don't think Boyd is worth giving up those guys.

Not that I would ever be happy about anyone having a positive coronavirus test, but (unfortunately for the Mets) the Subway Series being postponed this weekend may be a blessing in disguise for us.
Really hoping Gleyber is okay with some rest plus it should ensure Judge can play in whatever the next game is and this reduces the number of lost games for DJLM and Britton.
What a mess with this team. Even with an overhauled training staff they can't stay healthy.
-
When Judge returns who loses? As much as I like and appreciate Gardner, he's got to be the odd man out now, no?
Judge can never have a full day off, clearly, given how much the lineup loses when he's out. You can't justify sitting Frazier and Tauchmann anymore. And Hicks is too good a player to be a fifth outfielder.
Mike Ford probably gets hurt a bit too. I'd think you'd have to use the DH spot for Judge, Sanchez, Frazier, and maybe Hicks. There aren't many at-bats for a backup first baseman and there shouldn't be too many days off for Voit going forward either.

Few weeks ago:
“ The heat got turned up in the temperature-controlled Tropicana Field on Saturday.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone and hitting coach Marcus Thames received fifth-inning ejections from home-plate umpire Vic Carapazza in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Bench coach Carlos Mendoza assumed manager duties.
The ejections appeared to be related to a number of high-and-tight pitches that the Rays threw to the Yankees, two at DJ LeMahieu and one to Gio Urshela.
The chirping from the Yankees’ dugout, in these fan-less games, could be heard on the YES Network after Tampa Bay pitcher Andrew Kittredge knocked down LeMahieu in the top of the fifth inning.“
-Post
After Aaron Judge, DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit were pitched up and inside, forcing them to stumble off the plate, Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames and manager Aaron Boone were tossed in the fifth inning by home plate umpire Vic Carapazza.

I used to have quite a bit of respect for Tampa Bay for building a really impressive team in a hard division in an area I never believed could support a full-time MLB club.
But Kevin Cash desperately wants to pretend they're the Red Sox South. Screw him and the whole team.
I don't condone head hunting, but this "We haven't done anything in 3 years" nonsense is laughable, at best. It's also a really good point that, yes, he did admit that they have willingly done it in the past.

Rob Manfred needs to GTFO
Aroldis Chapman was suspended for 3 games & fined for “intentionally throwing” near Mike Brosseau’s head, per MLB.
Aaron Boone is suspended one game and fined as a result of Chapman’s actions.
Kevin Cash is also suspended one game and fined for his postgame comments.
-
Maybe if we cried like giant pussies in the postgame every time the Rays threw at us we could get their players suspended too
You’re freaking out of your mind if you think that pitch was “intentional” or “sending a message”. In fact, I’m quite sure that you don’t regularly watch chapman pitch because he uncorks one like that almost every other outing. He’s consistently wild.
-
Chapman’s ERA going into last night was 13.5 in 3 appearances and he hadn’t locked down a save yet. You literally don’t know baseball if you think he’s putting the winning run at the plate.
The Yankees were 1-7 against the Rays going into last night! Behind in the division in a short season! Kevin Cash is a freaking idiot.

The Heller ejection sucked, but I understood it. If you don't throw him out immediately, you're almost forcing TB to retaliate, and this thing has to end before someone actually gets hurt. It kind of appeared like Heller told the ump it wasn't intentional and the ump responded like "I know."
I just wish this damn team would score some runs.

-
I don't know how it's Boone's fault.
The lineup has half of it missing at any given time, and the guys that have been healthy don't freaking hit (Hello Gary). And Boone certainly can't throw the ball for the pitching staff.
This team stinks. Fully healthy? They are probably still steamrolling, but the lineup can't make up for the loss of combinations of Stanton, Judge, DJ, Gleyber, Gio over long periods.
Mike Tauchman can hit like crazy when he's the only guy in the lineup you can afford to throw strikes to. Voit is as awesome an all-or-nothing hitter as Sanchez and when one of them is cold, it's nothing. They can't carry a lineup.
The roster isn't built for guys to be out. That's somebody's fault. Not Boone's, but someone's.

You should trade Judge, because when something's not going right the answer is to trade your best player. Just think of all the draft picks you'll get.

To help fans recreate the stadium experience and savour the season we’ve been given, Heinz Ketchup is teaming up with DoorDash to deliver authentic game day dogs straight to fans’ seats (no matter where they are) for Opening Day, July 24, with pre-order starting July 22.

Nah, that's just Heinz attempting to cash in. Our official dogs are Schneiders and while I'm sure there are some weirdos who would put ketchup on them, they're not people I'd choose to associate with.

I truly cannot understand why DJ has not been given a long-term extension already
He's the exact opposite of everything the Yankees usually dump tons of cash (mistakenly) into: versatile as a fielder, and a true contact hitter who won't suddenly fall off a cliff in a year or two and stop hitting the only thing he's good at (homers)
They made the mistake with Didi, I really hope they don't screw this one up

DJ LeMahieu on impending free agency: "I want to stay here. I've said that a few times. You never know how it goes. I thought I would stay in Colorado and I didn't." #Yankees
The Didi thing isn’t that comparable because of 2 main factors:
-his injury
-his performance in his walk year
Do I wish the Yankees brought him back? Yes. His market and the deal he got tells me they did a pretty good job of evaluating his worth. No reason they can’t re-sign him this offseason, but I’m not betting on them to do so.

Agreed it's not necessarily comparable, but I'd have at least given Didi what Philly did as an evaluation. But the team had a lot more faith in Gleyber defensively than I did. And I think the Didi ship has sailed here
But DJ has to come back. To me, he's the best player on this team right now, and easily the most consistent

Tanaka going deeper in this game than Carlos Carrasco
My blood pressure was through the roof after what transpired before the 2nd rain delay

Tanaka avg exit velocity
Inning 1: 99 mph
Innings 2-5: 82 mph
You could tell his body language was horrible and he didn’t have command on his breaking pitches in that monsoon. Just saw the RBI double Ramirez had to go up 1-0 and the splitter didn’t break an inch.
So lucky he was able to find it in the 2nd inning.

-
Just an incredible win and worth the loss of sleep to watch
The Gio play is, to me, the most important event in the game's result. So many big moments, but that was the #1 thing to me
This game was marred by poor decision making from every angle; from both managers completely mismanaging their pens, to inexplicable PH/defensive subs, to poor ball/strike calls, to unbelievably bad weather-suspension decisions
-
How do you pinch hit for Naylor? That kid lost 2 ABs, one of which would've been in the ninth
If I'm him, I'm flipping tables in the locker room after the game
If Tito was managing, I'm not sure the Yankees are advancing right now

I mean I agree, but there’s no guarantee Naylor hits a 2 run double there where Luplow did. It missed being a HR by 5 ft. So saying PHing Luplow lost them the game is just factually incorrect.

I didn't mean just that move lost them the game
Certainly letting Hand go as long as they did was a mistake. Also letting Karinchak go too long as well
I'd equate PH Luplow with Boone subbing Wade for Voit. You just can't take bats like those out of the lineup for guys on the interstate
It was just a bunch of questionable managerial moves on both sides, which the players kept surmounting. Just glad in the end it was the Yanks who were just a bit better (thanks Gio!)

Terrible decision-making by the Yankees pulling Garcia after 1, but Bucknor was just unbelievably bad. Like, I miss Angel Hernandez bad

Robot umpires please.
Though they lost because Happ and the pitching sucked. I dont like what they did with Garcia, but the pitching was the problem.
-
Positives:
-tonight's game starts at 7:10
-Tanaka, no opener bullshit
-
We wouldn’t have to get cute if we had Sevy and Paxton. We have 5 games in 5 days and only 2 SP you can pencil in. It made perfect sense to let Happ pitch with an opener and all of the platoon advantages. It’s more annoying that we have to rely on JA Happ in the postseason.
Happ was warming up by the 3rd pitch, before Deivi let up the HR or HBP, so the notion that this wasnt planned in advance by the Yankees front office is just strategy/gamesmanship at this point.
-
https://twitter.com/desusnice/status/1313689821504770050?s=21

You have to think the plan is to come back with Deivi for game 4, which is why they pulled him after an inning. No idea if they’ll use the same strategy and just throw him for an inning and then bring in Montgomery or let him go deep.

Exactly
I am adamant that umpiring directly affect both 2 & 3's outcomes (if Luke walks early, it's 2-1, the inning still lives, and a totally different game)
But that stupid analytics stunt in G2 ruined everything and if this team gets eliminated in this round, heads should roll. But Cashman wears teflon-lined underoos

5 games in 5 days.
G1: Cole
G2:
G3: Tanaka
G4:
G5: Cole
Starters available (2020 stats)
Happ: 9 GS, 3.47 ERA
Monty: 10 GS, 5.11 ERA
Deivi: 6 GS, 4.98 ERA
Starting Happ was going to have to happen in Game 2 or Game 4.
Giving him the platoon advantage and the opener advantage makes perfect sense whether he liked it or not. The only argument you could make is that they should have used Green instead of Deivi, but at that point they know you’re going with an opener and know Happ or Monty- a Lefty, is going to pitch. Using Deivi in game 2 also allows him to pitch in bulk at some point tonight.
We don’t have a postseason caliber starting rotation and the lack of reliable pitchers at the front end (not the back end) of the bullpen exposes us even further. We can’t yank out SP’s as early as we like because we’re then putting low quality relievers into high leverage situations.
-
Btw, the Rays are using an opener tonight.
Ryan Thompson as the opener and Ryan Yarbrough as the bulk reliever (starter)
On paper this isn’t any better than Deivi/Happ.
The strategy works when the players execute.
-
The strategy works when the players execute.
Whatever you say Adam.
-
Whatever you say Adam.
I would rather throw Joe Flacco in a playoff game than JA Happ.
-
The flaw in all of that is: if Deivi pitches 6 innings of, say, 3-run ball, maybe Happ never pitches in game 4 because there is no game 4
Or even if there's a game 4, the Yankees have a 2-1 advantage and can afford to risk a Happ disaster, instead it's the Rays doing the opener thing with advantage
They mentioned it on the broadcast, Happ has a postseason ERA over 5. He's the last guy you want to appear in a playoff series. Also, I would've gone Cole, Tanaka, Deivi, Monty, Cole.
Whoever made this decision was wrong. JA Happ was who JA Happ is. The player executed. He just sucks so the plan did too.

I'm with SFD on the strategy.
The problem is that the Yankees didn't make any moves at the deadline to upgrade the staff, and Paxton got hurt.
If you're going to use Happ, I don't mind how they did it. Where I disagree is using Happ over Garcia in the first place. Let the kid pitch as Plan A, and Happ can be Plan B if things go wrong.

That's fighting an argument I don't think anyone is actually making
No one thinks Cashman is sitting there texting down to the dugout. But Cashman and his analytics team, by his own admission in that article, are influencing the decisions before the games even start
Data is great. I'm a freaking database developer by profession. But sometimes you have to make a decision on-the-move, and it feels like a lot of them are set in stone in a meeting room before anyone steps on the field, and that's bad business
Pulling Garcia simply because they'd predetermined they'd be doing it is a perfect encapsulation of the point. It was bad when it happened, and it was bad in hindsight

That’s not even a good argument for this scenario. Deivi gave up a HR, HBP, and took 27 pitches to get through the first. He didn’t do a good job as an opener or a starter.
You can convince me that the Yankees should stop using analytics when the Rays give it up.

I'm not advocating dumping analytics either.
I love stats, and data should be used in decision-making. My entire professional career is built on the presentation and use of data.
But no one should be beholden to data as the be-all-end-all. Inform yourself with all of the data, but always be ready to pivot based on changing circumstances.

The fact that Happ was warming up 3 pitches in, before Deivi even got into trouble, tells us this was a pre-determined move. Boone probably would have let Deivi go another inning if he had a clean 1st.

Maybe Boone would've pitched Deivi one more if he had an easy first, but there's no way to say that definitively. What we can say definitively, is that no matter what Deivi did, Happ was coming in early to replace him.
Sticking to a predetermined plan no matter what is something an Adam Gase does.

Who came up with the plan? As far as we know, a combination of Boone, Cashman, and the analytics guys. The only leeway Boone probably had was whether or not to let Deivi go back out for another inning.

I'm not sure what we're "arguing" about here.
I agree with you. Boone likely had little wiggle room to pivot on a predetermined decision. And I think that's ridiculous. Use the data to make decisions, but don't make decisions to fit the data.

Deivi's got potential to be great, and he later added Severino to his list. But I would definitely not mind seeing him in pinstripes and he did add later that he doesn't hold grudges and would be happy to compete anywhere. (Read: I like money and the Yankees have a bit of it.)

The sample size is questionable. He played 200 innings and Gallo played 450.
Also, lol at Gallo being good defensively. The advanced metrics back it up. He’s always been gifted, but a bit of a lug. Surprisingly he had a bad year at the plate.
60 games is meaningless and so are these awards.

Awards are fun. That's really all they're about. The only award that really matters is the one raised on the final day of any season.
Clint was visibly more comfortable defensively. Good to see he was over the concussion fears/after-effects and he gave the Yankees no excuses to send him to the alt site.

2020 Rotation Thoughts:
I don't think they're gonna acquire 3 starters so I think I would look at the depth chart like this:
1) Cole
2)
3)
4) Monty
5) Deivi
Schmidt
German
Sevy mid season
Plan A: sign Trevor Bauer and bump everyone up a spot
Plan B: re-sign Tanaka and sign another mid tier starter like Stroman, Paxton (1 yr deal), or Taijuan Walker
I find it hard to believe that they will re-sign DJLM and sign Trevor Bauer, so I think we’re probably looking at some type of B scenario. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s only 1 FA signing too, and then relying on internal guys.

What's the deal with Brad Keller?
Looks like he got some good BAIBP and HR/FB luck in a small sample size this year, 2 things that are out of the pitcher’s control.
2020: .233 BAIBP
2019: .282
2018: .294
2020: 5.4% HR/FB
2019: 10.2%
He also reduced his walk rate. Doesn’t strike many people out though. 5.76 K/9 in 2020 is atrocious.
Fangraphs article on his improvement this year:
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/sunday-notes-front-side-fixed-brad-kellers-slider-became-killer-in-kc/
I would throw him in that category with Gausman.

Tired of hearing the Yankees cry about salaries. They're one of the richest organizations in sports.
Sign Bauer and LaMahieu. Win titles.
-
I read the Yankees think their training staff revamp will start paying dividends next year post-Covid. Assuming that's the case, my lineup:
LaMaheiu 2B
Judge RF
Hicks CF
Stanton DH
Voit 1B
Frazier LF
Torres SS
Urshela 3B
Higashioka C
I'm ready to give up on Sanchez. If you can find a trade partner, move on.
My rotation:
Cole
Bauer
Garcia
Montgomery
German
When Severino returns, you bump out whichever of the "bottom" 3 performs least to that point.
-

How are the Yankees crying about salaries. Do they not have one of the highest payrolls every year?
Not gonna happen. Probably wasn’t gonna happen before the 2020 losses.
Those days are gone. Reference the Red Sox trading Betts and the Yankees passing up on Harper and Machado.
Without doing any research I think they have 30-40 mill to burn. There isn’t room for two 20M+ contracts in there.

Makes no sense.
The Yankees don't want to spend more money, despite making it hand-over-fist. Even with the 2020 excuse, this is a rich team--and I just saw they're considering taking the organization public if Henry does it with the Sox.
If they desperately want to balance some money out, I'd look at seeing if I could move Chapman and slide Britton into the closer role. Or maybe see if you can package Stanton with a prospect or two and Andujar to relieve the Stanton contract.
I understand the idea of not entering into long-term megadeals with guys like Harper or Machado, who once they age you run out of DH slots. But neither Bauer nor LaMahieu is that kind of investment.

Except the Yankees didn’t make money hand over fist this year. They took the biggest loss of any MLB team. You know that right?
Facts are they have a top of the league payroll and they’re up hard against the luxury tax which *spoiler alert* none of these rich derriere mlb teams want to pay because it’s a giant cut of their profits and these teams are businesses not vehicles for our whimsical fantasies where we sign every top FA every year.
Projected 2021 salary via spotrac:
1) New York Yankees - $175
This is before they make all of their moves to make the team competitive.
Stop. Complaining. About. Payroll.
What you should be complaining about is the inability of a team with a $200M payroll to beat a team with a $50M payroll. You really think the problem is that they’re not spending enough money?

I'm always going to complain about spending money. It's not mine. My only interest is winning, not profiting.
That said, I agree the problem isn't the physical spending of money--it's how the money has been spent. Stanton should not be a Yankee. Just like ARod never should have been. I really like both of them, but both had bloated contracts. And those are two worthy players, nevermind spending on someone like an Ellsbury.
But that's kind of my point. This team needs to spend on players that will help, not might. You can rely on DJ to get a hit at least 30% of the time. He's proven himself to be a hitter the Yankees desperately need with RISP. He's not a boom-or-bust hitter, so even with a multi-year deal, he's likely to live up to his payday. Bauer is the kind of pitcher this team desperately needs if they want to win titles. Cole was the first piece, but then you need a guy who is going to win you game 2 and put you in the driver's seat of a series. Add in Severino, and you've got a rotation that can compete long-term in October.
There are bad contracts on this team. I'd also put Hicks and Chapman in that category. Again, players I like, but their money could pay for bigger needs or more reliable players. If Cashman can trade away some money, by all means. But I don't care if Steinbrenner pays more out of pocket to acquire more talent on top of bad contracts.
-
There's no excuse for not resigning DJ. I have absolutely no expectations that Hal is going to break the bank, but this is the Yankees, spend the $$$ to retain batting champions.
His salary and Gardy's 10 million coming off the books cover it. It's been a great run, but bringing back Gardy at the expense of sacrificing further at-bats for Frazier is organizational malpractice.
Given what's transpired this year I have absolutely no expectations that they do anything else besides either retain the starting pitching they have, or acquire one replacement for the two they're going to lose. If it was up to me a "frugal" Yankee off-season would be at least retaining Tanaka and going into next year with Cole-Sevvy-Tanaka-German-Montgomery in the hopes that Garcia or Schmidt maybe takes someones job if Monty falters or German looks like excrement off the layoff. Andujar is a chip if they want to bring in another starter, but his value has clearly taken a hit.
Gausman is a solid bargain target, but I'd rather just roll with what we have and hope youth prevails.
I'm over Gary Sanchez, but I'm not breaking the bank on Realmuto and the rest of the catching market is excrement.

Yankees Minor League Changes
AA: Trenton Thunder > Somerset NJ Patriots
A: Charleston Riverdogs > Hudson Valley NY Renegades
Charleston used to be Low A but Hudson Valley will now become High A
Tampa used to be High A but now will be Low A
This move makes sense with Tampa’s minor league facility and proximity to the Gulf Coast League and Dominican Summer League
High A, AA, and AAA are now all within a few hours of the Bronx and each other, making for easy logistics on promotions
SWB to Somerset: 2-hour drive
Somerset to Hudson Valley: 1.5-hour drive
Hudson Valley to SWB: 1:40 drive
SWB to Yankee Stadium: 2-hour drive
Somerset to Yankee Stadium: 1-hour drive
Hudson Valley to Yankee Stadium: 1:20 drive
Cuts:
Short Season NY-Penn league has been scrapped by MLB, so the Staten Island Pizza Rats are no more
Rookie level Pulaski VA Yankees have been cut
The Yankees made their re-organization of minor-league affiliates official over the weekend, adding two new teams and moving Tampa from High-A to Low-A while officially dropping four affiliates.
The Somerset Patriots, who had played in the independent Atlantic League through last season, will replace the Trenton Thunder as the new Double-A team
...
However, with the Yankees’ realignment – keeping Triple-A in Scranton, moving Double-A to Somerset and High-A to Hudson Valley (just outside Poughkeepsie), and having Tampa now be Low-A, just one step above the complex league – they are now set up as optimally as possible for success, with their top three affiliates not only within about a two-hour range from the Bronx, but also only a couple hours away from each other.
Yeah, from a geographical standpoint, everything is now really in one neat, tidy place for them,” Ashmore said. “Somerset will have to make some upgrades to TD Bank Park to fit the minimum requirements for affiliated Double-A baseball, but they have the space and resources to do it.”
That ideal, or the lack of acting on it, may have been one of the reasons the Yankees decided to end a nearly two-decade long run with the Thunder when the MLB player development agreement ran out.

-
So what happens to all the NY Penn League teams now?
They might have the option to move to the Independent league (non MLB affiliated/funded).
Trenton already got offered the HV Renegades spot in the Atlantic league (independent). They’ve already said they’re probably not interested. Sounds like it would be a money sink.
The problem with Staten Island is that it’s a short season league team, so they would probably need to convert to full season for pretty much any path forward.
The MLB cut 40 minor league affiliates, so I expect we’ll see a lot of these type of decisions being made.

Another potential rotation option for teams seeking starting pitching help – including the Yankees – will soon become available on the international market.
The Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan are expected to post right-handed pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano as early as this week, according to MLB.com.
The 31-year-old righty went 14-2 with a 1.97 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP and 131 strikeouts in 137 innings in 2020. In eight seasons in the NPB, Sugano has posted a 2.34 ERA, and twice has won the Sawamura Award as the best pitcher in NPB.

Letting Dellin Betances go was much, much harder. And he did not look like the same pitcher when he finally came back last year. 11 IP and 7.71 ERA for the Mets last season.
The Yankees can re-sign Kahnle after his 2022 rehab season if he returns to form. Usually the first season back after TJ is a rough one.

Wow, ok. Wont look for him this year, then. Thanks.

FTR, I wouldn't have been in on Darvish.
But I don't understand the Yankees not targeting anyone. Obviously, Cole is an absolute monster, but then? You're hoping Severino returns okay from TJ. You're hoping German comes back from suspension well. Besides them? Deivi Garcia, Jordan Montgomery, Michael King, Johnathan Loaisiga all competing for 4th and 5th spots.
I'm okay reining in the spending, to a degree. No more Stanton contracts. But they're risking losing LaMahieu and not chasing someone like Bauer. Just signing those two guys would make this an overwhelmingly successful offseason.
-
This offseason is... 10%, 20%, would you say? ... over.
None of the top free agents have signed. The 2nd and 3rd tier FAs are very slowly trickling in. We probably wont know what the Yankees plan is until we know what happens with DJLM.
We may not know what pitching options are realistic until we find out what Bauer commands.
-
Interested teams suggest Trevor Bauer seeks a 5- or 6-year deal for $36M to $40M (about $200M). Bauer is coming off a brilliant Cy Young season but the star market is slow. The record AAV is $36M by Bauer’s UCLA teammate Gerrit Cole. Agent Rachel Luba declines comment on talks.
-Heyman
We’re def out on Bauer. Prob looking at Tanaka, Paxton, or Taijuan Walker.
Luis Castillo is by far the best candidate on the trade market but he would require a haul, at least as much or possibly more than Snell. Deivi’s stock isn’t as high as Patino’s and Castillo is still on his rookie deal.
-
Darvish deal is official. $3M goes in the deal from Cubs to Padres.

I've made my feeling pretty clear on Bauer--he's the "final piece" that gets this team back to the World Series. Not pursuing him is ridiculous to me.
But I'd be in a lot better mood if it didn't feel like they were screwing around with DJ.
You're right. It's early. I just want LaMahieu back in pinstripes immediately.
-
I'd like to see Tanaka back. Obviously, if I had the choice between Massa and Bauer, I'm taking Trevor, but Tanaka is just the kind of guy I love having around in October.
If Cashman somehow worked an 09-esque miracle and got DJ and Tanaka back, plus Bauer, he'd be a hero to me.
-
We'll be able to come back to this thread in 2 months-as of right now i'd have gladly taken the certainty of getting Darvish in for 3 yrs at 20 mil per, especially considering the year he's coming off of.
