Shot an 89 today. I'm on cloud 9.

18 holes, that's really good.  What was par?
Title: Re: The Golf Thread
Post by: SixFeetDeep on October 06, 2013, 06:19:21 AM
It was a par 72. I think my low before yesterday was a 94.

Also shot my low of 43 on the front. Had 3 pars and a birdie. It was really just a perfect storm for me. I didn't hit my driver particularly well, pushed everything to the right, but I had a bunch of nice recovery shots. My irons came to play and I was landing my chips pretty close to the pin.

Nice man. Still have yet to break 100. My putting has been on fire though. I'm averaging a little over 2 puts a hole.

My beat 9 hole score was a 53. Best 18 hole round was 113. Chipping has been a huge problem.

Putting is usually the toughest thing to master, so that's pretty solid that you have it down. I'll take a 2 putt every time unless the 1st one is less than 10 feet away or so.

My chipping is finally starting to come around. what kind of wedges do you have? that's part of the key is having different clubs you're comfortable with in different situations. I usually hit my pitching wedge from 100+ yards out, Approach wedge anything less than that, an my lob wedge when I'm next to the green. And sand wedge out of the sand obviously.  I used to always skull the ball and hit line drives when trying to hit a little finesse chip onto the green. Make sure you don't break your wrists, take a backswing appropriate to how far away you are, trust your club selection, and follow through. If you hesitate during your downswing or try and check up because you don't want to kill the ball, it's tough to get the ball up in the air.

another tip someone gave me is to visualize taking an underhand toss of the golf ball towards the green in order for it to roll to the pin and picture the trajectory you want.

Use the same stroke you would use as if you were putting the ball when you are chipping.  Exactly the same stroke, and your chipping will become much more efficient.

My best is a laughable 106.
I was playing a decent amount with some crappy clubs and then I got some new ones for Christmas 3 years ago, hybrid irons, driver, etc, and then my daughter was born and I've played like 4 times since. I love those hybrids.

I played all summer long and took a bunch of lessons and still haven't broke 100. Best was a 112 I think.

85 and it was confirmed by 3 people. Despite my physique now back when I was in my late teens till early 30's I was a very good athlete with excellent hand eye coordination. It's not my fault you dipshits in your late 20's early 30's probably have the hand eye coordination of Poindexter from Revenge of the Nerds.

Understandable. It wasn't meant to be a jab. Personally, I just couldn't enjoy the game when I was hitting the ball every which way and playing scramble golf. I spent a lot of time at the range until I could figure it out. It didn't help that all my friends that I would typically play with were shooting in the 80s while I was struggling just to tee off.

Yeah, that is a common problem that I think most of us have faced. It's most likely your club-face open, which indicates you're not turning your wrist over. It's more common with the driver.

Lots of youtube videos out there to show how you can correct a slice, that is if you have time to head to the range. It will take repetition to break your old habits.

Or just address the ball in such as way as to be pointing 45 degrees to the left of where you intend to land the ball, and then call it a fade.

I might need to actually point a full 90 degrees (to the right, I'm a left-handed golfer) for it to work with my slice.  It's very much like Jack Hartunian's slice in Caddyshack 2.

It's easy to shoot a 120 without losing your ball. Whenever I shoot a 110-120 it's usually because of bad ball placement near the green.

Interestingly enough this past summer I corrected my slice and hit my drives long and straight. Only really resulted in knocking off 10 strokes on average. It's the chipping that fucks me up the most.

But when I chip well, suddenly my irons take a hit. Then when I correct my iron shots, I suddenly start slicing again.

I guess one day I'll be able to put it all together. One day. It'll happen eventually, and that's what's keeping me on the course.

freak. Now I really want to play.

This.

I went from 120ish one year, to the 105-115 range the next year, to the 90-95 range the next.

Every year I correct one thing at a time. I just focus on my most glaring weakness. This year, I want to work on my pitching/chipping and bunker game. Last year was driving, the year before was sorting out the slice.

Eventually, it all comes together if you stay with it.

Golf is a game of misses. You can shave a lot of strokes off your card if you practice course management and play high percentage shots.

A lot of people make the mistake of pulling driver every par 4/5 and missing way right or leaving an awkward yardage to the green. I would go into more detail but that's something better left to YouTube. Mark Crossfield has some cool course videos on his YT channel that bring you along for course play-throughs with other players and pros.

Yeah, I toyed with using my irons off the tee, but my driver unexpectedly ended up being my strongest part of the game. My woods are terrible, but for some reason I still try and use them when I could easily just use a 5 iron with way better accuracy. I'm going to toy with this this season. Need way better course management.

I hate teeing off with irons. I opt to remove the tee entirely if I'm at a par 3 and have to use the irons.

Woods take some time to get used to, I'm right there with you. One day they work, the next day I can't lift the ball off the ground.

Course management is key.

Instead of having the mentality of "Well, I'm in the rough, but I think I can make the green from here if I pull out my hybrid and hit it between these two trees, clear that one tree 100 yards away, and avoid missing the bunkers on the left & right, I'd be sitting pretty with a birdie opportunity. I just have to make sure I don't hit it too far to avoid the water hazard behind the green as well. Wait, this rough is thick. Ah, freak it I'm still going for it."

Take less chances, play to your strengths, and you'll see your score start to drop. I read somewhere that your driver, pitching wedge, and putter are used 75% of the time. Get to know those three clubs the best.

Basically this. You don't have to leave your driver in the bag but you should look at the fairway and plan your shot. If there are fairway bunkers at 240 yards and you hit your driver 245 you're better suited hitting a 3-wood to keep them out of play. If you're on a par 4 with a huge fairway by all means pull your driver. On the other hand if it's a 280 yard par 4 with a tight fairway its tempting to go at the green with a driver but the better play is to hit a 5-iron to the fairway leaving yourself an easy 100 yard wedge.

Some of the most difficult shots in golf are the in-between wedge shots or <50 yard pitches especially for amateurs. A lot of people have the mindset of hitting it as close to the green as possible but you're better suited finding a good lay-up distance with a pitching wedge or sand wedge. If I can't reach the green I like to leave myself 120 or 80 to the green so I can take a full wedge at the pin without having to worry about dialing back my distance.

There is a lot to discuss with course management but that's the basis. Play high percentage shots and minimize your misses.

Wow. That all makes a ton of sense. My biggest problem is trying to play like the pros. I tend to use the club that would only be useful if I was a scratch golfer. Need to plan the course to match my strengths.

Not exactly sure where you get it, but basically you need to prove your competent on the course and won't hold up the groups behind you.

If you shoot 120, that may be a bit of a reach.

It means that you need to shoot about 105 and below on average.

Played golf in HK's only public course yesterday. The place is called Sau Kai Chau, and it's a 54 hole island surrounded by a ton of other islands. Beautiful course and scenery, though it was really foggy and misty.

Tough course, but I managed to only have two disastrous holes, and my irons were connecting smoothly. No real whiffs. Shot a 110, but more like a 112 without a couple of gimmies.

My best score yet, and it was a new course. I think klax said that the time off would be good for me, and it has been. I'm way more relaxed out there.

Well on my way to breaking 100.

It's funny how time off helps. It allowed all the excrement I learned to be ingrained in my muscle memory, so there was less to think about per shot.

Golfing out here is insanely expensive though. It was 200 bucks for 18 holes and to rent clubs.

It looks similar to the course I go to at Cache Creek once a year. This year it will a birthday trip for two days: Golf, Casino, sleep, wakeup, golf, go home.

just played the first 18 of the year, at a course I've never played before very close to where I just moved.  Very windy out today and the layout of the course was very "tight".  Small landing zones for your drive, constantly shooting over water and ravines, and many of the greens were semi "island" style.  Played suprisingly well, shot a 93.  my swing felt fluid after the winter off, and my first time at the range was yesterday.

I desparately need help with this too. I lose a stroke each hole because of bad chipping. I'd be in the low nineties if I could fuckn chip properly. Those line drives kill me.

yesterday I had 2-3 where I hit the ball dead straight, nearly hitting the flag/pin, only the shot was a liner over the green with the complete wrong distance, speed, trajectory.  I ended up with a more difficult shot for my 2nd shot each time.

frustrating.

(1) shorten your backswing
(2) accelerate through the ball, striking it with a slightly descending blow that brushes the grass.
(3) keep your head down - you're probably hitting the ball with the blade of your club as you try to lift the ball up in the air.  Keeping your head down will help you achieve (2).

Scooping is no bueno.  The loft of the club will give the ball lift.

I have to stop trying to scoop the ball. I guess that's what's been causing me to lift my head every time.

Let the club do the work. A wedge is designed to have the ball travel up the face of the club at an angle designed to give you good trajectory. If you're trying to scoop the ball, what's the point of using a wedge?

Also, everything Jetaho said. I wish I could just exercise all of those points consistently. Also a member of the "oops, I hit a line drive past the green" club. I'm close to submitting my resignation though. Closer than yesterday at least...

The single biggest difference for me was that when I played on Saturday my slice was worse than ever off the tee - my driver was pretty much pointless. Today we played on a course I really like but which is very tight on a lot of holes, so I decided to be more cautious and used my 1 or 2 iron off the tee on all bar a couple of holes. I may have lost a bit of distance but I more than made up for it in accuracy.
Title: Re: Golfin'
Post by: Tommy on June 20, 2014, 09:52:23 PM
Wow. Props. I suck with the low irons. If I could hit a 1 or 2 iron I would definitely keep the driver in my bag. Those extra yards are meaningless when you think about it.
Title: Re: Golfin'
Post by: klaximilian on June 21, 2014, 10:32:45 AM
People still use a 1 or 2 iron? Pull out a 3-hybrid and let it rip. Those clubs can reach up to 225(ish)…

I went golfing for father's day last weekend for the first time this year, ended up hitting in the 120 range. Something bizarre went wrong with my swing and I couldn't drive anything. A lot of top/slice…probably was turning my wrists over and rotating the hips way too early. Maybe it's time to move the ball back a bit in my swing.

I'm not far short of that when I hit my 1 properly, but it has the added benefit of not producing a vicious slice.

Also figured out how I can finally cure my shitty chipping: reverse grip. Worked wonders.

It was hot as excrement. I started with a twisted tea, then had about 6 large miller lights. Then a shot of Jameson at the turn. Roasting in the sun, dehydrated, not much to eat. Well, needless to say it was a disaster.

First round of the season and shot a 115, one of my top 5 scores. Also had 3 pars (career high). Granted it was Van Courtland, which is an open and easy course, but still. It was cold, too. Very happy. Definitely think this is the season I finally break 100.

I've only been playing for like 3 years, probably 10 rounds a season. I also count every stroke. You just don't know golf.

The difference between a 125 and a 100 is about the same between a 100 and 90. And a 90 to 85, etc. It gets exponentially more difficult to take strokes off your game consistently.

I very rarely play, and I have big issues with the amount of land devoted to courses here in a land hungry area, but I did a bit more often in high school (friends in HS lived on a couple of pretty nice courses and had fathers who were avid golfers) and in college, largely out of a sense of competition with a couple of friends and because the Stanford course was outstanding and dirt freaking cheap if you went there.  So yeah, I know a bit.  And a quick skim tells me that every year for 3 years has been 'the year I break 100!'  If I still considered 115 a decent score after a year of golfing, let alone 3 years, and if after 3 years I never broke 100, I would have realized it just wasn't for me and quit.

I'll get out of this thread so you can go back to looking for someone to justify your existence as a black hole of golf suck.  Have fun.

Meh. I have fun out there. And persistence pays off, even if it takes a while. That's the cool thing about it - you can measure your improvement. I like that. Plus you're out in the open, having beers, shooting the excrement, it's great way to spend a few hours. That's mostly what keeps me out there. I also try and do what I can to get my score down as much as possible each season. Last year I started the season with a 125, ended with a 106. Who knows what I have going this season. That's the exciting part. And even if I don't break 100, who cares? I'm still having fun.

Have played three times so far this year. 123, 119, and today 110. It's not pretty, but it's fun. Playing again tomorrow and hoping to actually get somewhere closer to double figures.

I've been playing for years, I just haven't played consistently for a long time - this year I'll probably have played more times by the end of June than in any one year since I was 15. I'll be back in double figures within the month.

Also I'm going to a club fitting at my local pro shop this week, I've needed new woods since forever so I'm probably going to buy some then.

Grip it and rip it!

Getting off the tee in good shape's half the battle imho (eliminating the constant scrambling from difficult/impossible lies).

Enjoy and keep us posted.

Went to a Cobra club fitting today. It was pretty cool, they have these frankenstein clubs that they put together with different length and whip shafts and different heads and film your swing as you're hitting, then put together the perfect clubs for you. By the time they were done I was hitting the woods they'd put together for me 50 yards further than I do my current ones (which are old and cheap and excrement), and I was hitting them pretty straight as well. The pro is going to call me with a price for the custom set but it looks like I'm dropping a bunch of money shortly.

That's awesome that they can marry you to a player-specific club using real life tech (film/club mock ups) instead of something off the shelf based on a rote sales pitch ("offers both power & control").  That said, as intoxicating as the 50 yd. bump in distance will be, remember the 'drive for show, putt for dough' adage and use your 'hand talent' for your short game as well.  Debit cash, credit enjoyment - am amped for you.

Because it's designed and maintained in such a way as to disproportionately punish good shots, many holes don't have a risk/reward element. Greens that have the pin halfway up a steep slope, so a good fifteen foot putt that's two inches wide of the cup and a perfect weight finishes eight feet away, and so on and so forth.

It is a shitty course that we only went to because our club had a tournament on that day.

Bought some quite expensive golf balls that claim to be lower spin and thus help reduce slicing. If they don't work I'm going to be annoyed that I spent so much money on balls that don't do the thing I bought them to do, if they do I'm going to be annoyed that I have to now keep buying such expensive balls.

'Less spin' mitigating claims ("this golf club/tennis racquet will provide BOTH power AND control!") is a bandaid covering a fundamental flaw that needs addressing.  A lesson may provide you with that one simple 'kernel' to keep in mind (vs. 46 different "do this/do that" corrections = paralysis through analysis) and $ave you in the long run.

You're right, although less spin = less short game control. So there is definitely a sacrifice, it's not claiming to be a magic panacea. My short game is pretty good though.

Haven’t been in this thread in a while, but that’s some really solid progress this year JE.

I’m happy when I break 100. If I’m not playing regularly (at least 18 holes every 1-2 weeks), I hang around that score or won’t break it if I have a bad round. I’ve played about 1x per month this season.

Breaking 100 is always my goal when I golf (I usually shoot high 90's, but breaking 100 isn't a given). My real goal is to break 90, since I've never done that on a real course. But I also don't play enough where I can really expect to make that much progress.

I was hoping I would play a lot more golf once I moved to Las Vegas, but it's too damn hot. Once it starts getting in the 90s instead of the high 100's, I'll play a lot more.

I am in a shocking run of form. Since shooting 92 a few weeks ago I have only broken 100 once, on Saturday, on a shorter course than my home one. Last Sunday I shot 110.

This afternoon I paid for next year's membership because we get a deal for paying early. By the 5th tee I was considering asking for a refund.

IMO, for amateurs, Golf is a sport of diminishing returns and regression to the mean. You were playing with house money after your run earlier this year

My golf buddy thats way better than everyone else (shoots in the 80s or below, whereas everyone else is in the 90, 100, 110 range) played 36-48 holes a week this year, new top of the line driver and putter and didn’t get any better.

Golf club just called about my membership fees. Because I only played twice last year due to the whole torn achilles thing they're rolling over my 2022 dues to this year and only charging me the increase, so my 2023 membership just cost me a shade under $70.
