I'm surprised the major sports leagues haven't been flexing their corporate muscles to get their players and staff priority for the vaccines.

Probably because of that 99.9% survival rate. Let the people in nursing homes have the vaccine first.
-
The longer they wait probably correlates to a better chance of getting more fans in the stands, I’m guessing.

They were starting to have limited crowds for the World Series, maybe the NLCS too, I don't remember now. It was like family and friends.

Every so often, a few times a year, doesn’t matter which sport, you’ll see a trade where you think “damn, my team should have been in on that.” Doesn’t matter which team you’re a fan of. “That’s all it took to land him? How could they not beat that offer?”
The Rockies gift wrapped Nolan Arenado for the Cardinals. Horrendous package, not a single top prospect back in return for a top player in the league.

I'm honestly struggling to see what he said that was too wrong. Obviously I don't know baseball, but service time manipulation is a pretty standard thing elsewhere e.g. a young player being sent down after nine games in the NHL to avoid burning a year of eligibility. It's just a function of how the CBA works, surely?
I don't see any problem with the clips about the neighbourhood or Rodriguez's English. The piece about the Japanese player suddenly speaking better English when he's told that the club won't pay for his translator any more is a bit off colour, and he probably shouldn't be talking out of school about contract negotiations, but they're hardly egregious offenses.

there's nothing wrong with describing how well a person speaks a specific language, but it's kind of weird and fvcked up to bring up a foreign person's language proficiency with a foreign language as literally the first thing you use to describe them when you're asked about them
i'll be honest, i haven't watched the clips so i can't say. if he was having a conversation with that club about how they navigate dealing with ESL players as a baseball organization and then he describes how well they speak the language........fine. but i know you know there's a huge difference if he was randomly asked what he thinks about X player or Y player and the first thing that comes out of his mouth is 'well his english fvcking sucks so yeah, his english is bad'

About former Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, who was born in Japan:
“it frustrates me...For instance, we just re-hired Iwakuma, he was a pitcher with us for a number of years. Wonderful human being, his English was terrible. He wanted to get back into the game, he came to us, we quite frankly want him as our Asian scout, interpreter, what’s going on with the Japanese league.
“He’s coming to spring training. And I’m going to say, I’m tired of paying his interpreter. When he was a player, we’d pay Iwakuma X, but we’d also have to pay $75,000 a year to have an interpreter with him. His English suddenly got better, his English got better when we told him that.”
Iwakuma pitched for the team from 2012-17 and is supposed to return as a coach this year.
About Julio Rodriguez, a consensus top-five prospect who was born in the Dominican Republic:
“Julio Rodriguez has got a personality bigger than all of you combined. He is loud, his English is not tremendous.”

Gerrit Cole said that he hopes the comments made by Mariners former president and CEO Kevin Mather are a wake up call for MLB players: "Every player should wake up and read the news on the guy in the Mariners. That's the kind of way a lot of clubs are acting. That's just not productive for anyone. This guy's talking about players that are making him money. It’s tired, man, and I think players are over it. And if they haven't been awakened to that type of behavior, that's what goes on."

Lol at thinking this is a "free market action" or that its "protecting their reputation."
Even in these divided times, and under polling groups that skew left to the point that Trump was supposed to lose Wisconsin by 17 points, some 7 out of 10 people believe in voter ID. "Free market" my derriere lmao, but its hilarious seeing the absolute hypocrisy of those who think Citizens United is the death of our democracy totally forsaking that idea to scream "FREE MARKET" where it isn't even applicable.

The propaganda behind the opposition to this legislation is astounding.
Here's part of the problem imho (read: the media not spelling out the details but summarily 'reacting' one way [Fox] or another [MNBC/CNN]). As a sitting-on-the-sidelines NY'er, I'm only hearing talking points either in defense of or calling it Jim Crow. Exactly what are the particulars in the law that's a wrench-in-the-works? On the other hand, it seems that it's objectionable to people of color in particular which is a big pause for concern...so what's up with that?

Kumar Rocker entered 2021 as the consensus top Draft prospect and has excelled over his first seven starts. He won all seven with a tidy 0.84 ERA, posting a .137 opponents' average and a 61/12 K/BB ratio in 43 innings.
Fellow Vanderbilt right-hander Jack Leiter has been even better. He no-hit South Carolina for nine innings in his first career Southeastern Conference start and Missouri for seven innings before departing in his second. He also has seven wins in as many starts, and his numbers verge on the ridiculous: 0.43 ERA, .074 opponents' average, 71/16 K/BB ratio in 42 innings.
"It's like watching Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris from 1961," an area scout who covers Vanderbilt said. "It's two guys who are clearly elite in their field."
The Commodores aces could become the first teammates to ever go 1-2 in the same Draft. The last time college baseball saw anything like this was in 2011, when UCLA had No. 1 overall pick Gerrit Cole and Golden Spikes Award winner Trevor Bauer. Cole and Bauer went 1-3 that year, as did Arizona State sluggers Bob Horner and Hubie Brooks in 1978.
While Leiter and Rocker clearly are outstanding prospects, who's better? We posed that question to a wide swath of general managers, executives, scouting directors and area scouts.
The result was 25-3 in favor of Leiter, with one executive declaring it a dead heat. That landslide overstates the difference between Leiter and Rocker, with most respondents expressing that they consider the two aces to be extremely close in talent.
"It's hard to separate the two," a National League scouting director said. "Rocker is bigger, more physical and has more track record. Leiter just feels like he'll outperform him. I'm more confident with him reaching his ceiling than Rocker. Leiter has more feel and ability to use his weapons."
Wow. Rocker was a lock for the #1 pick coming into this year. Leiter was a lock for top 5 tho and his stuff is even better this year
-

Saw this a couple days ago, something to monitor. He sits at 95-96 usually.

Carlos Rodon lost a perfect game tonight with one out in the 9th via hitting the batter. Cue the debate over whether he could've gotten out of the way which IMHO is stupid. Contrary to the Conforto situation, idk how the batter is supposed to track a slider going right into his foot.
Rodon still got the no no.

Of course it isn't. If it is then the history books have to be completely rewritten, lots of guys have gone 7 without giving up a hit and then blown it in the 8th or 9th. A no-no is only as big of an achievement as it is because you have to pitch so long to get it.
I'm not a baseball aficionado but this seems pretty obvious.

This year is the lowest MLB league batting average in history
It’s .234 so far
I just scrolled through and since 1901 there’s only been 2 others in the .230’s, .237 and .239
Why did they deaden the ball again?

The left-hander was unranked in the Top 150 Draft Prospects list coming into the amateur season but jumped to No. 51 on the Top 200 list released last week. A UConn commit who already features a 60-grade, high-spin curveball, Mozzicato consistently works in the 90s with his fastball after an offseason stint at Cressey Sports Performance brought the offering out of the upper 80s.
Cressey 👀 draft this beast
Monday's gem included 19 strikeouts, bringing Mozzicato's season total to 101 over 42 innings. He's walked 15 and surrendered two runs -- one earned. A batter last recorded a hit against him on April 26, when he chucked a shutout against his team's crosstown rival, Manchester High.

I'm confused. Why did the first baseman try and chase down the batter instead of taking two steps back to the bag?

I'm confused. Why did the first baseman try and chase down the batter instead of taking two steps back to the bag?
Correct
-
You see the first baseman tag the batter once in while when the throw pulls him off the bag to his left. Usually, the runner will just stop and the 1B will take a step or two towards him and apply the tag or the guy runs out of the basepath to avoid it and it out anyway.
I've never seen anything like that though. He had the presence of mind to run all the way back to home without touching it or leaving the baseline.

I'm 100% with Glasnow on this. 1 legal substance, that's it. But have one.

The Jays lack of bullpen quality has now cost them at least 6 games (the ones i've watched anyway). I'm sure this will come into play when we get frozen out of the wildcard race in Sept.

I think you're going to see a lot of lower-quality pens in the coming weeks. Did you read the SI article that broke the sticky stuff case wide open? That excrement completely changed pitching all over the sport.
The bat was being taken out of guys' hands. I'm vehemently anti-3-true-outcome hitters, but I'm a lot more anti-cheaters. I've always been 100% behind 1 legal grip substance, but "Spider Tack"? No way.

there isn't enough spider-tack on the planet to help the Jays' bullpen. Rafael Dolis is garbage.

i self admittedly need to learn a lot more about this and haven't been following very closely, but i saw those glasnow vids and you can't help but feel that there is a lot of merit to his concerns.
manfred and co have always been the worst with big decisions, and this may be another example. if you want to police the game and remove 'cheating', fine, great. figure out a safe and reasonable way to do it.
asking pitchers to go from 'anything' to nothing smack dab in the middle of the season without any sort of forewarning beforehand other than the prior two weeks seems......pretty fcking rash. if this forces pitchers to hold the ball/throw differently than they have their entire lives and recruit forearm muscles to hold the ball tighter before they have to throw their pitches with extreme ferocity and torque, you can totally see and imagine how it could affect arm health.
also, even the punishments seem kind of stupid. miss 10 games without any dock in pay? that sounds like.......a paid vacation?
-
I'm confused by all this. Was it legal before and they changed the rules? Or was it always illegal and just ignored?
In cricket, baseball's estranged sibling, a bowler using anything on their hands and/or the ball other than saliva is massively illegal, and it will and does result in significant suspensions. This is because it affects the flight of the ball - if you've ever watched cricket you'll have noticed players rubbing the ball vigorously on their trouser legs, this is to make one side as shiny as possible in order to create differing air friction on each side of the ball and induce movement (or swing, as it's known in cricket). Foreign substances accelerate and accentuate this effect. Is this not also a concern for baseball?
I find "I got injured because I've built my throwing action around being able to unfairly doctor the ball" to be a wholly unsympathetic argument, but I also accept I might be completely missing something here.
-
I did a quick bit of educating myself, and apparently MLB warned teams about using substances to enhance grip last season, and then this spring told them they would be actually cracking down on it.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2938007-mlbs-new-rules-for-doctored-baseballs-could-backfire-spectacularly
So yeah. Glasnow complaining he got hurt because his action doesn't work if he can't break the rules doesn't really seem like a particularly legitimate one.

i am not a baseball historian but it appears that something simple like sunscreen and rosin has been used as a 'grip assist' in baseball for a very long time, and in glasnow's video he suggests that pitchers have been using 'something' to help grip the ball for decades.
i don't believe it's something new in baseball. i think MLB is just choosing to crackdown on it now because of recent news and publicity RE other more 'advanced' substances like spider tac that actually do seem to affect the physics and spin rate of the ball a good deal. still, it just feels like they're going about this entirely wrong
-

I don't see how sunscreen could be banned from use or even detected, or really be considered part of the problem. Sunscreen usually makes things harder to grip, not easier. I suspect Glasnow is claiming he just used sunscreen because he knows that admitting to pine tar will blow any sympathy anyone might have for him.
-
Let's not forget MLB changed the ball again before this season, I think making a big show of the crackdown on grip substances is pretty self-serving to obscure what they did to the ball.
-

Doesn't it make sense though that they would make it more difficult to hit the ball out of the park while also enforcing an existing rule that should theoretically result in more hittable pitches? It seems like both things have the same aim - create more hits that put the ball in play.
-

It would seem so but at the same time (back in the spitball era) pitchers used a substance called 'slippery elm' to doctor the ball (fwiw).
-

i think they were using sunscreen spray if that makes any difference, in mixture with the rosin. RE your last point, there is obviously no way any of us will know what exactly he was using lol. all we have is that there is huge inconsistency with the feel/grip of the ball innately (which i buy), he went without anything for a couple of his starts (which i buy), it forced him to strain his arm peri-pitch in a way he's never had to do before (which i buy), and he believes there's a connection to his injury (which i can feasibly see as an outcome to the above).
i'll again admit i have no idea how benign a mixture like sunscreen+rosin is on ball physics, but it appears this has been a very popular thing to use as purely a grip assist for a while. however, i consider myself on the side of the MLB trying to figure out a legal substance/mixture that shouldn't alter spin/ball physics greatly that'll allow these pitchers to throw these pitches safely. that's important for hitter safety too. i think they way they've gone about it is pretty rash.
also, as badge noted, this is all a bit rich considering it was a poorly kept secret that for the majority of the last half decade the ball was juiced beyond oblivion, and it feels like the mlb only started to address this when everybody and their grandmas had caught on and started making a stink of it.
-
Let's not forget MLB changed the ball again before this season, I think making a big show of the crackdown on grip substances is pretty self-serving to obscure what they did to the ball.
> MLB deadened the ball, also changing the height of the seams and the surface (slickness) of the ball
> Offense declined dramatically
> MLB blamed pitchers for using substances that have gone largely unpoliced forever
-
I do think that it’s smart to get everyone on a level playing field. Certain pitchers and organizations do this more than others, even down to the minor leagues.
I would be fine with a league wide approved substance for grip, that’s not some shanty rosin/sweat/sunscreen mixture.
I’m also fine with just keeping it out of the game because it’ll lead to increased offense which is what we all want to see.
-
Doesn't it make sense though that they would make it more difficult to hit the ball out of the park while also enforcing an existing rule that should theoretically result in more hittable pitches? It seems like both things have the same aim - create more hits that put the ball in play.
Whatever MLB did to change the ball clearly gave pitchers an advantage and is hurting the hitters. Decreased HRs were not the only effect.

It’s sunscreen mixed with Rosin, I think. I’ve seen studies where sunscreen alone actually decreased spin rate.

A deader ball isn't harder to hit though surely? I would have thought it primarily reduces the distance without impacting rate of contact, thus increasing the number of ballson play.
-
Yeah, sunscreen plus rosin makes a tacky substance. Someone on this board mentioned in the past that he used it.
Hitters, including Josh Donaldson who has been the most vocal, have said they're okay with the sunscreen + rosin mix. Giving a pitcher some grip allows them to control the missile they're firing at guys at 90+ MPH.
But Spider Tack is proven to drastically improve spin rate. I'm sure MLB is more upset given the drastically decreased offense, but the sticky stuff has gotten way out of hand and needs to be policed.
-

Blaming the excrement offense this season on Spider Tack isn’t accurate though. It didn’t just start this season. I’m fine with getting it out of the game, but I think it’s a deflection on MLB’s part since they fucked the baseballs this year.

They didn’t *just* deaden the ball, intentional or not they made design changes that make it easier for pitchers to throw and harder for hitters to hit. Jury is still out, but that’s my opinion. There’s been a couple good Athletic articles on it earlier.

I just posted like 5 times back to back on this so you prob missed it, but I’m fine with that. Also would be fine with an league approved grip substance that doesn’t increase spin rate through the roof.

That's CC's argument - pitching without a grip substance will increase HBP/wild pitches.
He did however concede that spider tack is a whole different story - he wasn't familiar and didn't see the problem with it until some current players got in his ear and explained just how different it is from rosin/sunscreen/sweat/grime whatever.
-

Ah ok. Yeah I think that's the only way it could work, that or re-engineer the ball such that it provided sufficient grip without the need for anything else. I'd still be concerned that players would substitute something else in for MLBCreamTM ("just $14.99 for a 25ml tin at all good stockists, because don't you owe it to your 12 year old to give him every chance of being the next Trevor Bauer?") though - it seems much easier to stop people using the wrong thing if they're not using anything. Pitchers will still figure out how to throw the ball just fine, and if it means they have to take a bit of speed off in order to prevent beaning the batter then so be it.
-

I don't disagree with you, but the "sticky stuff" problem goes back years now. It's something Bauer has been talking about for years, but he's Bauer so people stop listening.
I think MLB screwed up the balls, I agree with you there. Even a slight difference in stitching would affect the aerodynamics of the ball, and probably the grip as well. But you can see the difference in pitching over the last couple of weeks since this whole thing blew up. Pitchers that were filthy 6 weeks ago aren't so nasty today.
-

Yeah, again, I really suggest everyone read the article. Going into it I was like "Come on, what's the big deal? How much could it possibly do?" Turns out, a lot.

They're already testing balls from games this year to check for foreign substances and what those substances are. If humans were able to come up with a test for the existence of a generational virus in a few months I'm sure they could create one for this-ain't-rosin-sunscreen.
Of course, there will be guys who try to cheat anyway. They still bust players for steroids too.

Apparently Japanese baseballs are just a little bit stickier than MLB baseballs - pre-tacked with some substance. It really shouldn't be hard to do for the MLB at this point, and creates consistency across the league with enough grip to have control. Seems like the obvious solution, so MLB will probably do something completely different.

What's the lol for? What you linked doesn't dispute what I said. Velocity and movement are completely different things. Most pros can throw extremely hard, but control over it is the difference. Today's MLB hitters can hit a 90+ MPH fastball that doesn't appear like it's rising or breaking balls that act like frisbees.
I'm 100% behind the Japanese balls. I heard about that the other day and it definitely sounds like the best idea. It solves the grip issue on even ground for everyone.

Yeah, sorry, I was meaning to agree, it was a lol at how immediate the effects were on spin rate

Ah, my bad. Yeah, and the subsequent effect on hitting.
MLB AVG:
- Mar/Apr: .232
- May: .239
- June: .245
OPS:
- Mar/Apr: .698
- May: .712
- June: .731
BAbip jumped 11 points since March and April as well, and teams haven't stopped shifting. So hitter contact is getting better.
I was doing some math and it looks like, per plate appearance, strikeouts are down to 23.45% from 24.44%, walks are down to 8.47% from 8.85%, and hits are up from 20.6% to 21.9%.
Guys can hit when pitchers can't cheat.

everyone knows where i stand on the substance/ball issue, but the whining and theatrics that took place over the first couple of days over umps making sure that pitchers weren't cheating got real annoying real quick. i almost wish the umps called their bluffs and told them to expose their junk on live tv if they had the balls to do so, the histrionics were so fvcking cringeworthy.

I think that while he sounds like a bit of a wrong 'un who is into some fairly unpleasant stuff, the fact that she went back for a second session and agreed a safe word with him (which there's no claim of her using) suggests that she was at least to some degree into the same thing. I'm not really sure what to make of the story as it's presented, to be honest. It sounds like in principle they both wanted to get a bit rough, but failed to communicate to each other the degree.
I honestly don't understand why these guys can't just drink a couple of six packs, give the girl a disappointing two minutes, fart and fall asleep like normal people.

bro if he was rough with her to the point she became unconscious and was still doing stuff to her unconscious body, she can't say the safe word lol
i agree it sounds like the first time was at least very agreeable/consensual as she came back for a second session, but then it sounds like this second time she was unconscious multiple times and homie took it way too far. fetish or not that is not normal

100% agree. I'm just saying that the Twitter excerpt didn't provide the context of the first encounter, where she says he fucked her up the arse after choking her out, and then she went back for a second go around but this time with a safe word. Of course it's on him to recognise that if she has passed out then she can't say the safe word, so he should stop until she can make that decision. Choking someone out, consensual or not, and then doing excrement to them while they're out, is clearly problematic.

Yup, and the only reason they were quick to report on it was because 'the crime' came to THEM (the media). It seemed that it was only when violent crime developed 'political impact' cracks in the form of public reaction/opinion that the media elites (and gov't officials) even chose to acknowledge it; in some media circles it was even mocked as staged/phony (see: CNN's Chris Cuomo & Don Lemon). These poor people were taking it on the chin but since there was no 'political coin' to accompany it.....

Ross Stripling got destroyed in the first inning last night against the Red Sox...giving up 8 runs before being yanked. He cited his mental state over the prospect of being away from his family for 2 months when the Jays return to Toronto next week as the reason why he stunk it up.....lol what?!

Maybe the wuss should consult with Naomi Osaka.
Last night at one point there were three shutouts in progress with at least a 12-0 score:
- Red Sox 12-0 over the Blue Jays (won 13-4)
- Tigers 14-0 over the Rangers (won 14-0)
- Nats 18-0 over the Marlins (won 18-1)

Stripling got lit up the last time he faced the Red Sox....he blamed Joe Panik that day.
He's got good stuff, but obviously doesn't understand the concept of accountability.

Indeed it is. At the same time Berrios is under team control for next year so its not a rental.
Also and this is just my own interpretation...I'm skeptical of prospects that are dealt out of two separate organizations before they ever play a major league inning.

...... and right on cue, he's had his two years and it's time up with MB. It's hilarious how you work on exactly the same timescale with every coach.
(I'm not saying you're wrong about Montoyo - I'm obviously clueless about baseball.)
-
Is it possible the Jays just have a bad pen?
Dolis started the year as your potential closer and got cut yesterday.
Merriweather hasn’t pitched since the first week of the season.
Hand has looked like a disaster since you traded for him. (Before that too)
Romano is still a really solid closer. 10/11 in save opps and great numbers all around.
The rest of your pen is hot garbage. Looks like they’re having better success with new setup guys but Cimber and Mayza are JAGs
Looks like your manager has 1 viable reliever

it's in the bottom 5 of the league.
Losing Merryweather and Pearson have killed us.
I really like Cimber, he's been reliable since coming over.
The fact that it took this long to DFA Dolis should signal a managerial firing. Damn, i'm starting to sound like Alio.

I give everyone a chance....but HCs/baseballMgrs are paid to win games, man. You have 2 to 3 years to show your mettle, if you can't, then it's time to go.
The jays offense is being wasted. I'm positive we've lost 10-15 games due to bullpen collapses alone. That can't happen.
Come to think of it....our pitching coach Pete Walker, he can freak off too.

I gotta say, I think Walker's done a really good job with the starting rotation. Robbie Ray looks reborn. Matz has been fine. Manoah has come up and provided above average performance.
The pen has been an absolute shitshow, but that'll happen when you lose Yates, Merryweather (who's stuff albeit in a small sample size looked electric) Phelps, even former Yank AJ Cole who was very serviceable last year. They've been absolutely decimated by injuries.
-
Forgot about Yates. Worth the signing, but they were really depending on him

The Yanks? Absolutely. ; ). Kluber, German, Severino, Andujar, Frazier, Hicks, with Gio/Sanchez/Coles/Britton/Chapman MIA in spots (the bullpen as of late - shaky) and yet they've somehow strung one series win after another. As MB said, Montoyo may be deservedly on the hot sest in Toronto but at the same time the Jay's GM Ross Atkins should've done a better job burning the phone lines and shoring up that bullpen.
Cashman fixed a RHP-susceptible lineup with the two lefty paisanos which have not only added Yankee Stadium-friendly lefty bats but gave the team defense a shot in the arm as well. The Mike Tauchman trade's worked out well so far. No reason why Atkins couldn't have poached some "seller team's" arm before July 30th. Q: Jays have any arms in the bushes worth bringing up?
-

Woah. I pride myself and think of myself as, a man of faith, as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that’ll be a homerun. And so that’ll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don’t know if I’ll be putting on this headset again. Whether that be for the Reds or my bosses at FOX
freaking lol. Just the absolute best line to add at the end of discussing a sensitive or serious subject.
Re: Castellanos, he's one of the guys who should be hoping for universal DH as I could see his market exploding if that's the case.

I could see Stroman going back to the Mets...Scherzer will be a tough sell, apparently he wants to stay on the west coast.

scherzer would be crazy not to stay on the west coast

Anyone see the "Special Message from MLB" which was nothing more than Manfred whining about how the players are completely unreasonable and won't budge from their demands despite a record-setting November for free agency?
Again, millionaires and billionaires, but the owners can freak right off.

Interesting article. 1. I was never a fan of Ken Rosenthal and his stupid bow ties (or Manfred for that matter). 2. How can the NY Post say tentatively in the title of the article that his firing was due to previous criticism of Manfred. One could infer that but there were a lot of reasons. They moved on from nearly all their on air talent. His contract expired a year ago, etc.
