Title: Travel/Vacation advice
Post by: bojanglesman on February 07, 2014, 08:43:53 AM
I'm thinking of going to Kiawah Island, SC for continuing ed. conference/vacation in April.  Anyone have any advice on restaurants to go, etc?  The conference is at the Kiawah Island resort.

And yes, Puck, I will be buttfucking guys/performing cat rectal exams, etc.

I will also send MB a pic of food he'll never eat.

Most of the discussion I can find about KI is golf-related. No one seems to care about the restaurants.

Most of the great places to eat that aren't too far away are going to be on Johns Island.

Wild Olive is one of the best restaurants in that area.  It's probably about 25 minutes from Kiawah.  A reservation might be a good idea.  It's not too expensive either.

I don't know if Crave is still on Johns Island, but it's awesome too.  It's more of a brunch place though.

Chez Fish is the seafood place to go out there.  I don't think it's as good as the places you'll find downtown Charleston or on the Isle of Palms (where I used to live), but it's still good.

And for beers, there's a Red's Icehouse at Bohicket Marina that I used to go to all the time.  You'll get better food at other places, but Red's has a great view and cheap drinks and apps.

If you decide to go into Charleston, let me know and I'll recommend two or three places there.  Some of the best restaurants in the world.

you can tell this is an AMERICAN continental breakfeast. Canada has no Gardettos, Famous Amos or Grandmas brand. In canada it would be full of chips of every disgusting flavor you can imagine: ketchup, all dressed, extreme dill and other assorted trash.

Thanks man.  I'll probably venture up to Charleston at some point while I'm there.  I was there a couple of years ago for a conference.  I ate like a fat boy.  I went to Anson Restaurant and they had the largest freaking flounder I've ever seen in my life.  freaking thing was hanging off the edges of the plate.  Looked like Snacks Harrison in a bikini, except delicious and only the cajun version was black.  I can't remember the other places I went, but I must've gained 10 lbs in 2 days.

When we went to Sydney it was over Christmas and New Year. On Boxing Day we went on a party boat - basically a boat that holds perhaps 80-100 people and has a bar and a DJ - and spent the afternoon sailing round Darling Harbour in glorious sunshine getting ripped to the funbags on E and liquor. It kicked us all out at about 5pm at which point everyone immediately went to a nightclub which was open at that time specifically for all the idiots getting off the party boats, and carried on consuming drugs and liquor until freak knows when. I don't know if those things keep going all year round or if it's just a Christmas thing, but if you have the chance you should definitely do it.

You will love it there.  The women are incredibly easy as long as you are assertive.  They like a man to take charge and tell them what he wants.  Most of them will even have a guy around just so you will go take them from him.  Just remember to be fully in command.  Walk up to a woman and tell her she's leaving with you and that the man had better deal with it.  Guaranteed best sex of your life.

When you want girl. You just take the girl.

my parents have a place in Cartagena on the beach.

I don't even know where to begin with how awesome it is.

General advice :

-Don't get in sketchy cabs. Make sure the hotel/condo or restaurant or wherever you are is the one calling the cabs.  Prenegotiate rates once you get in the cab. They WILL bait and switch you once they drop you off if you don't make it clear from the beginning.

-the old city is amazing. Go to the club that's on top of the fort wall. I'm forgetting the name. Something Del Mar.

-The street vendors selling cigarettes and gum offer "chiclets". That's code for cocaine. It is insanely cheap so don't get ripped off becaues you're a dumb white boy. An 8ball shouldn't cost you more than $40. And that'll be enough for your whole trip. It's insanely pure and you can eat/sleep/freak on it.  You won't do coke in the states once you try it.

- you're going to love all the hookers. But there's normal girls from other parts of south america who come there to party, and are also smoking hot and super down  (especially if you look like you have money). You're kind of fucked there since you don't speak spanish, but maybe you get lucky and find some girls who speak english too.

Hit up the high end restaurants in the old city and it'll still only be about $15-18 a plate, and be some of the most ridiculous meals you've ever heard. A lot of chefs from europe come to Cartagena just to open restaurants.

- HIt up the duty free store HARD on the way there. Rum and excrement is really cheap over there, and it's good but if you want to drink Vodka or Whiskey it's going to be exorbinantly expensive even for Colombia. my parents have a place in Cartagena on the beach.

I just thought it was funny that you were getting lectured on a country that

a) your parents have a home in by
b) someone who couldn't spell the country's name correctly

Colombia IS a 3rd world country as you said.  It's much better off than other third world countries, and the top end does have money, but it still gets that designation.

Actually, I'm not sure it technically is. Major aid organisations don't seem to like the term any more - they apparently prefer the term "developing country" - but Colombia doesn't seem to appear on the list for organisations like USAID.

https://www.usaid.gov/sites/default/files/documents/1876/310maa.pdf

I accept that I'm not an expert on the topic and I'm sure there are lots of organisations who use different criteria.

Edit: the IMF does seem to classify Colombia as a developing country.

Colombia would be considered developing, but that can be said for most Latin American countries. They actually prefer the other term "emerging market". "Third World" is just a relic from the Cold War. Colombia , like most LATAM countries, just has very high income inequality.

So, a country of 45 million people with a 93% literacy rate that appears at #3 on Bloomberg's list of happiest countries...  is third world.  Whatever.

The vast majority of sources I can find consider Colombia 2nd world (or developing country) at the very worst.

And that second line is the issue.  It was a broad term that encompassed varying levels of economic development, and it's not used much any more.  However, it was the word used and the word contested.  It is a Third World country.  As you said, though, that matters for freak all any more.

OK Mr. freaking Know It All.  By your standards, about 90% of our country is 3rd world.  Check out the national debt and exports of South American countries.  Check out the literacy rates.  freaking check out something for the love of god.  Just because a continent is browner than us doesn't make them 3rd world.  This is just a topic where people who think they are smart show complete ignorance.  Bloomberg puts them between Iceland and Puerto Rico (also a 3rd world country by your standards) for happiness level.

Are Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and hell even Mexico 3rd world countries?  Who decides these things?  What are your standards?  They don't get screeners so they must be 3rd world?

Here's a UN list of developing countries.  Not to divert from the bizarre scattershot approach to a rather simple and defined concept:

I didn't 'make it into something'.  I told JFIF I thought it was funny that he had just said his family lives there and that you decided to correct his statement that was 1) factually correct in a rather unambiguous way, 2) coming from a place of personal knowledge, though personal knowledge is irrelevant here, and 3) misspelled the name of the country you were so eager to defend from its factual status.  It was amusing, then you made it hilarious with every passing post.

I don't have to mount a defense.  It's a developing country.  It's that simple.  It's like someone stating that a Ford Escape is an SUV and then having someone else argue it's not because it isn't as big as a Chevy Suburban and gets better gas mileage than a Honda Pilot.  Yes, not all SUVs are exactly the same.  It's still an SUV because, you know, it's an SUV.  Colombia is a developing country because it's a developing country.  It really is that simple.  Congratulations on pointing out that not all of the hundreds of countries with that designation are exactly the same.  It wasn't at all relevant to the point, but it was at least interesting to watch a man build up a whole army of straw men and attack them furiously.

I don't have to mount a defense means that the other side of the argument is retarded.

Again: no one excrement on Colombia.  No one said the people were miserable.  No one said it is basically Uganda part two.  JFIF said it is a third world country.  Because it is.  You argued.  Because you have no idea what that means.  I thought it was funny.  You then launched on some tirade about all of the implications of being a third world country while ignoring multiple people, myself included, saying that it's a pretty meaningless and anachronistic term, that developing country is more appropriate, and that even that term expresses a broad range of economic well being.  You argued with someone who never once disagreed with you on any meaningful principle because you don't like the definition of a term.  It's amazing.

This conversation continues because

1) You can't see that you were wrong about what a term means
2) You like arguing with opinions that no one expressed
3) I think it's hilarious to watch number 2, so I'll keep pushing for as long as you're willing to keep amusing me

"Third World Country" carries the nuance of an impoverished nation. Colombia isn't. That's why words like developing and emerging came along. You can measure a developed country by the level of economic migrants flocking to it (either legal or illegal).

"Third World Country" carries the nuance of an impoverished nation. Colombia isn't. That's why words like developing and emerging came along. You can measure a developed country by the level of economic migrants flocking to it (either legal or illegal).

The only real "Third World" countries left are all in sub-Saharan Africa.

We already established that developing nation was a better term and that Third World was anachronistic.  Applied literally, Colombia still qualifies.  Even Chile does, and like I said, that's a great country.  Again, though, their last president must not have known what he was talking about.

And searching back, 2012:

http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/15/business/chile-pinera-economy-business/index.html

That's a man with $2.4 billion calling his own country a third world nation.  The funny thing is, my daughter has a friend named Simon who lived here for a couple of years who moved back to Santiago in June.  His dad is well educated, successful, blah blah blah, and was excited to get home to Chile, but even he talked about it in the same terms.  Go figure.

I kept wondering if you'd realize that in your initial response to me you called Colombia a developing country...aka Third World...and then spent the rest of the time arguing that Colombia isn't a developing country.

This made me laugh uproariously

I love the constant connection Fen is making in his arguments between wealth/development and happiness.  Americans, Germans, and Japanese are generally miserable and high stressed people and these countries are huge epicenters of finance.

Colombians are happy because they know how to be happy with beautiful weather, liveable land (amazing fruits, fish) and a general warm spirit. I've had little locals invite me into their home and serve me food and drink with them.  They have basically nothing but they still really know how to enjoy life and be happy with simple things. It's cultural, it isn't economic.

Except one region has a significant middle class, and another doesn't.  You have countries like Brazil who make a surge here and there but unstable currency is always an issue and creates major inequity.

People in South America tend to be filthy rich or extremely poor. It has to be top 1 or 2 continent in terms of class inequity.

This. If you're part of the white elite, you're well off, go to private schools, speak English, and can land a good job. It's very hard to impossible to enter the white elite once you're already poor.

In the west you can start out poor and become rich in a lifetime, not even having to wait several generations. That's pretty much why Mexico's poor flock to the U.S. You can build a good life in Mexico, so long as you're part of that white upper class. They're not the ones coming over.

Ha. freak you guys. I'm having the time of my life.

Highlights so far:

Banged one backpacking American chick (little thick, but freaky as excrement)

One local that I met from this HelloTalk app that I used to brush up on my Spanish.

Did enough blow to kill 3 horses.

Was not sober for 4 days straight.

By far the hottest chicks I banged were the pros that just hang around the clock tower I Cartagena. Did two lines off one's buttcheeks. That was perfect. Couldn't cum because of the coke until after an hour and a half, so she was pretty much destroyed.

Last morning in Cartagena, met up with another local while her son was in daycare. We smoked great weed on the beach, then fucked her raw dog in a dirty beach bathroom.

This is her. Have fun with the photoshop:

Enjoy your aids.

I don't know about her, but that's a side of Tommy I didn't think existed.

"I miss you already"
"I'm coming back to see you in two months"
"You, me, a beach, and pina coladas"
"I'll make you so happy"

She's got you hooked.  I'm calling it now: the next time you come back from Colombia, she's coming with you.  Unless she heads back with another American first.

Oh man, Friday, I really wanted an egg salad sandwich and I was just obsessing about it and I was like, 'Man, I'm gonna make one of those.' So Saturday, I went out and got, like, a dozen eggs and then I boiled them all and I just, I spent, I dunno, probably three hours, like three and a half hours making, you know, the mayonnaise, and the onions and paprika and, you know, the necessary accoutrement. And then, by the time I was done, I didn't really feel like like eating it.

Wait is that a pic of you with a dog?

I've taken all that into consideration. Okay, I'm lying, I haven't, but the main reason why I took the cats was because I've always wanted a dog and know for a fact that I can't care for a dog.
I've always wanted to own a pet. A dog to be honest but my lifestyle doesn't fit well with a dog.

I booked a month-long Europe trip since I've always wanted to do that and now find myself with plenty of time and money saved up. This will be different from my usual "only stay at nice hotels and eat at fine restaurant" trips, though I'm not backpacking like a poor college student either - somewhere in the middle.

Here's my itinerary so far:

- Fly to Dublin Nov 14th, spend the day/night there.
- Take train/bus to Galway for 3 days and stay at this cool castle. See the Irish countryside.
- Fly to London for a day or two to spend Thanksgiving with my good friend and her family.
- Eurostar to Paris then to Amsterdam. Hang out and party for 2 days, spend a day recovering and sightseeing.
- Train to Berlin and check out those bullet holes from the Battle of Berlin. Spend a day and night there.
- Train the Prague. 3 days and nights.
- Train to Munich where I'll spend 3 nights, maybe a stopover in Vienna for a night (already been there anyway).
- Train to Zurich for 4 nights, and see the Alps and other non party stuff.
- Train to Rome with a stopover for a day and night in Milan.
- Four days in Rome with plenty of time to see as much as I can as well as take a trip to Naples to see Pompeii (my dream since childhood).
- Fly back to Dublin the day before I leave, spend last night getting trashed before my flight the next day.
- Back home on Def 9th.

Total budget: $6,000. Flight and Dublin/flight to London booked. Staying over friends house in London. Still have to book other cities, but will go cheap. Probably set aside $1,500 for that. That leaves $4,000 for transportation and other stuff. Figure all the trains will be another $1,000. That leaves $3,000 for miscellaneous, or $100 a day. Can go over if need be but will try to avoid the expensive restaurants and see how frugal I can be.

Any thoughts/advice?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Four days in Zurich is about three too many. Nice city, but very dull. I'd make that bit shorter and spend more time in Berlin.

When I was in my early twenties I worked behind the bar of a big and very famous nightclub, and I was good friends with two of the girls who danced on stage for the club. They took a break for a couple of months to go travelling; one day I received a postcard from one of them that just said

NAKED IN AMSTERDAM ROCK MY WORLD

It's that kind of place. I've been to Amsterdam more times than I can remember and have a story from each one. Tommy might die there though.

Have an extra ten Grand for when you destroy that budget, lol.

Don't skimp on Belgium.  Spend at least a full day in Gent.  Castle Ravenstein and the cathedrals are worth it, plus the local vibe is sort of Berkeley, so hide your MAGA hat.  Drink massive amounts of beer.  Belgium has the best beer in the world.

Don't forget that Europeans hate Trump.

A nice place to visit in Germany if you like seeing really old excrement is Trier.  Founded by the Romans in 13 ad or something.  Wish I could remember the hotel I stayed in there.  Front desk was a dozen hot blond romanian girls.

Sounds like you got the train thing going.

Try any European beer that you've had here.  It's 100 times better there.

Amsterdam and Prague are two of my favorite cities. Prague is also pretty cheap so that'll help your budget.

Yeah those are the two cities that started this. I was originally going to just spend 10 days, then said freak it and went all in.

Four days in Zurich is about three too many. Nice city, but very dull. I'd make that bit shorter and spend more time in Berlin.

Thanks for this. I originally though that Zurich would be a good staging ground so I can visit the Swiss alps. You think 2 days would be enough to do that?

Haha. I still can't believe I've never been there. My main goal is to get two hookers at the same time and do lines off their funbags (afterwards though, so I don't get coke dick).

Oh you know it.

Heh. I thought about that and will make sure to have a credit card with enough to take care of "emergency expenses".

Take the cats with you.

Haha. I really need to figure out what to do with them while I'm gone.

Thanks for the tip. I may substitute a few days in Zurich to do this.

Way ahead of you. If that were to happen I'd rather it be Prague. Chances are she'll be some kidnapped teen from Albania so they won't give a excrement.

But the dead hooker could be part of this trip too. A month off is going to warp his already very warped reality.

Don't be jealous. My warped reality keeps my mind occupied. Haha.

"Visting the Swiss Alps" is like saying "visiting the Rockies". They're mountains, there's a freak of a lot of them, and they all look the same. You're probably going to be a bit too early for ski season and way too late for any good hiking, so I'm not sure why you'd spend any time going there. You'll just end up getting a bus for a few hours, saying "ooh, mountains", having a beer and then getting the bus back again. Seems like there are better things you could be doing with your time.

You're doing a bunch of party Europe, but you haven't really got much of the glamour. It's not really the ideal time of year because the weather won't be desperately warm, but if I were you I'd give serious consideration to the French Riviera for a couple of days - Nice, Cannes or even Monaco.

All of those party cities can do a bunch of culture and history if that's what you're after. I guess the downside of Monaco is that it's a little off the trail you'd planned, but it's still freaking cool. Shame you don't drive though as you'll miss out on doing two of the most famous drives in the world - the Monaco GP circuit, and the Corniches between Monaco and Nice.

You can't go wrong just picking up a really good travel guide and riding the train every couple of days.

Its a trip to a half dozen countries.  Just don't grow roots, and keep exploring.

Btw I'm in Clifden on the west coast of Ireland. I booked the wrong castle hotel, was supposed to be in Galway. No regrets since it's so rural and the views are great. Also I'm kind of a celebrity in the castle since apparently they haven't had an American in years.

Question for JE, is staying in Liverpool for a night worth it?

That's like choosing to spend a day in Newark because you don't want to do an extra night in Manhattan.

If you really don't want to go to London until the 22nd and are looking for somewhere to spend a night on the way, go to Manchester. It's a massively superior city in every single way, unless you have a burning desire to do an overpriced tour of pooper bars where John Lennon's auntie once had a drink and then get mugged on the way back to your hotel.

Also, I just noticed that Man City are home to Feyenood in the Champions' League on Tuesday night. I'll bet you can get a ticket without too much trouble.

I arrived at my bed and breakfast in the small harbor town in Wales called Holyhead at 1am.

What a gem.

It was closed up so I had to call the number and got yelled at in Welsh by the woman. Her husband finally came down and opened the door to my room that reeked of B.O, and showed me the minibar complete with a jar of milk and a Brita.

After a few hours of awful sleep I snuck out without paying and headed to the train station on my way to Conwy before going to Manchester for the Champions League match.

On the way I just passed this town:

Why did you go into Holyhead rather than getting the ferry straight to Liverpool and then train to Manchester? It's only about 40 minutes from Liverpool to Manchester.

I didn't know there was a ferry to Liverpool. Also you told me it was excrement. Anyway I'm glad I ended up in Wales otherwise I wouldn't have known about the Conwy castle.

I got my ticket. Should I buy a Man City jersey or wear my Jets gear?

Canal Street! In the UK road name signs are generally at waist level, but that one got vandalised so often that they had to move it. There used to be a club called the Paradise Factory which was awesome, I went to a record launch party there.

Nightlife down there is excellent, although I'm not sure what it will be like on a Tuesday night.

1) I’m so very shocked that Tommy’s hyper-masculinity was a front for homosexuality.  Shocked.  Rape the gay away, Tom.

2) The Welsh experience was 100% out of the Trump playbook.  Contracted to secure a service, didn’t care for it, unilaterally decided not to pay.

There are as many excrement dealers selling crappy overcut product in Amsterdam as there are anywhere else - probably more so if you're buying on the street and you have an American accent.

Having extensively sampled products in both Amsterdam and the UK, albeit many years ago, I can't say as I remember a particular difference in quality, and I had a very good local hook up. Maybe the quality in North America is significantly lower - I've never tried it over here and I'm not about to start now - but I'd be surprised if there wasn't very high quality domestic product available as well.

It's become one of the more popular places to make it. I think all the ingredients are legal in Amsterdam or something that made it a popular place for production.

Had a little scare last night while partying in Soho in London, which is right by Oxfordcurcle station. Rumors about a terrorist attack freaked everyone out and got excrement loads of cops around the area. While walking away we saw a mob of people sprinting towards us, apparently running away from something. I booked like Fuckn Prefontane and left my friend Tina in the dust and jumped into a pub. Turned out to be a false alarm but she wasn't too happy that I left her alone.

So I took out 1,000 euros once I got to Amsterdam and was gonna leave 700 at the hotel and only spend 300 for the night.

Went to one of those "girls behind the glass" whorehouses after smoking a fat joint, and requested two girls. 100 euro. Upgrade to freak? Another 100. Okay cool. Told the girls to eat each other out while I watch and masturbate Louis CK style, then banged them both and ended with a two tongue blowjob (one licking my balls and one doing the deed). It was heaven.

Only problem is that I had accidentally left the hotel with my entire 1,000 euros. I left the place and went to get some food and realized I had no cash in my pocket. The girls totally robbed me.

I decide to take a cab back to the hotel and the guy said he doesn't take credit cards. Since I already hit my withdrawal limit I had nothing to pay him with. I asked if he'll take PayPal and he refused. So he takes me to the train station ATM, and I decided to try and make a run for it. It's midnight and I have no clue where I'm going I decide to stop by the train fast food stand and have some burgers to bide time before the guy gets fed up and leaves.

Nope. After a half hour he shows up and yells at me for making him wait. Told him I have no way to pay him until 3am PST when my card resets, and I forgot the pin to my credit card cash back. He says he's calling the cops and I said go right ahead. Of course it's not the cops and he's speaking Fuckn Arabic. I shout at him and say I know how the freak Arabic sounds like and even speak some myself. I shouted "Shad! El enta Shad?!" which basically means "are you a bundle of sticks?" He gets pissed and tells me to get in the cab to figure this out, I tell him to go freak himself and he'll have to drag me. "Kuri dul qataar ehhhh?" which means "you want to fight?" He tells me to shut up with my broken Arabic and he doesn't want to fight. hoo-ha. I tell him to let me call my credit card company to work this out. He says okay and goes back to his cab. Idiot. He also says if I try to leave he'll go to my hotel and get my info like he knows who I am.

I then hop the gate and head to a random platform:

Worried that he'll follow me I hide behind some garbage cans until the train comes then hop on. Some drunk Dutch guys see my NY Jets sweater and ask me why I'm going to the subburbs, told them the story and they all laughed. Then found an uber and went back to the hotel but had to stake it out to see if he's there. Not there. Cool. I then go to the bar to order a Heineken. Chick says bar is closed but I see her pouring her friend a drink. I said what the freak and she said "oh she's my friend." She leaves to talk to her friends and I grab a glass and sloppily pour my own by reaching for the tap, spilling everywhere. She comes back and says that I'm on camera and that she's gonna call the police if I don't get the freak out of there. I chug my frothy beer and head to my room when I get another warning from the concierge.

Before I pass out I find 700 euros on the table.

This one is just too easy.  Tommy always places blame on minorities for not lifting themselves out of poverty, says it's just as easy for them to work their way out like his family did.  Then he allegedly dumps on some immigrant who did absolutely nothing wrong and justifies it because he's Arabic, another instance of skipping out on the bill abroad because these people are idiot foreigners and women.  I don't buy it.  It's like a Tommy fantasy trip that exists only on here and in his own mind.

What really happened?  My guess is that he got trashed, got lost, and made up the whole story to make himself feel a little bit better by impressing the people on here who idolize him for being the ignorant poopchute they're too scared to be.  It's pretty sad, but it's working out for him.

Like I said, the guy being Arab has nothing to do with it. You may not know this since you probably have never left Santa Monica, but arabs and North Africans make a pretty sizeable minority in Western Europe. Chances are if you were to take a cab or an uber they'd speak either Arabic or polish.

You don't have to believe any of my stories. You can just continue pretending to have the moral high ground while reminiscing about the years in your prime that you spent changing diapers and letting your wife be the breadwinner.

I'm honest about what I do because I don't give a freak and have no moral compass. I do what I want. If people find it entertaining, then great. If people find it repulsive, then that's them pretending that they wouldn't want to be banging hookers and doing blow. The sad part is that you actually believe that teaching your kids how to read and giving them lectures about white privilege is somehow rewarding. We both know you'd rather be doing what I'm doing. You can't so that's why you're bitter and being a bundle of sticks.

Had dinner with that Dutch chick I met in Dublin who was completely smitten by the loud and annoying American wearing a Jets sweater:

She didn't want to come back to my place, but convinced her that we'd just be having a few drinks at the hotel bar. She woke up at 3am feeling like a slut and rode her bike home like a true Dutchess. Now I know why Dutch girls have great bodies.

Anyway, last leg of my trip. Off to Paris for a night then back to Dublin for my return trip. I don't speak French so I'll likely just grab a Russian, Tunisian, or Albanian hooker while there. If I'm lucky it'll be Liam Neeson's daughter.

If people find it entertaining, then great. If people find it repulsive, then that's them pretending that they wouldn't want to be banging hookers and doing blow.

I don't have any particularly strong feelings about your little spat, but I'm going to have to pull you up here. I appreciate that you can't begin to imagine how someone wouldn't want to be spending their nights climbing up a rented gash with a head full of baby powder, boric acid and creatine, but claiming that people are either jealous or denying to themselves that they're jealous is to say the least a little delusional.

Oh no, I've always known that it actually gets to you.  Your little rants every so often just show everyone else.  Well done.  I'm glad to know you spent time on your trip ranting about what some stranger on the internet said about you.  It's touching how much you care.  I can freely admit that you repulse me, but you have to project this air of someone who doesn't give a freak what anyone thinks.  It's bullshit, though.  Unfortunately, these people that you come across briefly in Europe don't know who you are when they come across you, and any sense of decency that they may expect in their day to day dealings with people is thrown out the window.  I feel sorry for anyone who ever has or will encounter you.  Their lives are inevitably worse for it.

The only positive about this is that some people robbed you.  Not because that's model behavior, but your professed apathy about it seems to make it a wash.  freak over and be fucked over in some kind of zero sum game.  That's a win.

This right here. I have zero desire to do even a modicum of what Tommy's doing. Even in my wildest days, which (again) trust me, I'm happy those days are done, I had no desire to do any of this. I have been around blow many times and have never done it once and have less than a zero desire to do it. I always leave, if possible, once it's made clear others are using it. I have also been propositioned by many a hooker/pro/escort and similarly have zero desire to do that as well....never have and never will

Exactly. To be honest, even the traveling to Europe thing has zero appeal to me. Maybe Germany too see whatever family I have still there. I've only met most of them once or twice when I was a kid.

Frankly, I've had enough of what I consider to be fun at this point. I'm lucky I made it through the first time around. A second time? No thanks

All this thread did is make me wish I was back in Amsterdam.

Spent three very high days there on a free weekend when I studied abroad in Italy. Took a tour of the Anne Frank house to at least convince myself I got a little culture, then did nothing but smoke hash and enjoy watching the 2010 world cup with some of the natives.

FWIW, some of the nicest people in Europe. Italians tend to be shitbags, and don't even get me started on the French.

Universal is so much better than Disney to my family and me. I'm not even a serious Harry Potter fan, but The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is amazing.

Disney is cool for the nostalgia and if you have small kids. Universal is just a lot more fun if you enjoy amusement parks. The rides are so much better.

The Hogwarts ride in Potter World is one of my favorite rides I've ever been on, and I love roller coasters (it's not a roller coaster). In the newer Harry Potter area, there is a Gringots ride, which has some of the features found on the Hogwarts ride. Taking the railroad ride between the two parks is even fun.

There's a restaurant across the "street" from the Dragon coaster in Potter World. It's the only restaurant inside of an amusement park we'll actually eat at. I can't recall the name though.

There's a Spider-Man ride too that has some fun features like the Potter rides above.

If you like roller coasters, try the Aerosmith ride.

Cape Cod Summer Baseball league is a regional phenomenon. Should be low to no cost and something you could bring the family to. There’s about 10+ teams situated in the various towns along the cape so maybe you’ll be near one.

I’ve been to the Cape a bunch of times as a youte but it was always in the spring. I remember rocky beaches, lobster rolls, and record setting mini golf performances.

Hahaha I fished the Keys at least once a week for 12 years. I fished Islamorada, Marathon and Key West. FYI, it's generally just called Marathon not Marathon Key.......anyhow, I know some really good Captains if you want to fish. I also know a restaurant or two where you must take your family. I would start with Keys Fisheries, it's Mile Marker 49.5 not far from the end of Marathon proper. It's right on the water (Gulf Side), there are tons of fish around it you can feed, and I would suspect you will want to eat there more than once for lunch/dinner, it was one of our go to spots. The seafood bisque is awesome. Another FYI, everything in the Keys revolves around Mile Markers as the way point.

Serious, get in touch with me. The Keys were my stomping grounds for years and my family has property there. Depending on what you want I can recommend Captains from very good to being able to catch fish in a glass of milk, depending on how much you would like to spend.

Planning a summer trip to Manhattan with the kids next month.  My son wants to see Empire State building, Central Park and a few other things.  Going to get a hotel in Manhattan.  Anyway, we're going to drive up from Virginia, but I don't want to drive in the city.  Previous times when it was just me I've parked at an Amtrak station somewhere outside the city and took the train in.

Any idea what the least expensive way to get into Manhattan is?  It's cheaper to park further away, but it's outweighed by a more expensive train ride.  I thought about trying the NY waterway ferry.

Any idea what the least expensive way to get into Manhattan is?  It's cheaper to park further away, but it's outweighed by a more expensive train ride.  I thought about trying the NY waterway ferry.

stay and park at the anchor
take 25 cab rides into the city
profit

Knew that was coming.  25 cabs would take me 147 years to successfully hail.

You could look at getting a hotel in Bayside, Queens (not the Anchor). There's a Best Western on Northern Blvd a few blocks down from the Anchor. The Long Island Rail Road has a stop at Bell Blvd not too far from there.

There a couple of new hotels that were just built in the area near my kid's school (Fresh Meadows). It's not really close to the railroad, but it's close to buses that go to the subway. I think one of them is a Quality Inn.

Cheap hotels, pricewise, but in good neighborhoods.

I don't know about Brooklyn or Staten Island. But you could also look at hotels in Nassau and take the LIRR from there instead of Bayside.

Staying in Brooklyn is too hip and expensive, and he probably doesn't hate his family enough to stay on Staten Island.

I assume there's some sort of long term park & ride in NJ that would work but I don't know specifics since I will never do that.

Metropark in NJ.  I've done it before and it's probably what I'll do again.

I always drive to Secaucus Junction, park there and take the ten minute train journey into Penn. Seem to recall it costs about $20 a day to park. It's super convenient for me coming from the north but I don't know if there's something easier for you.

See how much the long term parking is at Newark Airport. Public transportation to and fro should be relatively inexpensive as you will only have to do it there and back. It would probably be something like 15-20 bucks a day. Which isn't too too bad

Metropark parking is $9 per day, but it's a longer train ride, which isn't a big deal.  My son loves trains.  I had it in my head that the NJT train was more expensive than it actually is from Metropark. I'll check the parking and train cost at Newark to see how it compares.

I looked into that NY waterway ferry, but the parking is a bit pricey.

Any recommendations for fun stuff for a 2 and 6 year old in Manhattan?  Going to be there next weekend with the fam.  Son wants to see Empire State Building and Central Park.  Probably the Museum of Natural History too.  Any other stuff?  I'm going to be staying in Midtown East.  I'll try to find a good pizza joint to show my kids what good pizza tastes like.

One thing I like to recommend to people looking for the skyscraper experience is going to the observation deck at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. That way you actually get to look at the ESB plus all the other great views. Unless it's really important to your 6 year old that he goes up in the ESB, then just do that.

Pizza/Central Pk/Museum Nat.Hist.

Midtown East: great hole in the wall pizzaria (My Pie) on Lex betwn 57th and 56th (cool Harley Davidson showroom next door)  Go west on 57th over to 5th Av., turn right and pass Grand Army Plaza and into Central Park at 59th (stay on Park Road [pedestrian-only] running north and parallel to 5th Ave.). Central Pk. Zoo is straight ahead at around 64th st. (btw, the park's now car-free south of 72nd st. as of yesterday).  From there, Musesum of Nat. Hist. on Central Pk. West and 79th and while on the west side you could cab it down to the Intrepid Air & Space Museum on the Hudson at 46th st.

My pizza wants to go to Austin for her birthday and it has to be the most overpriced city I've ever traveled to.

The Airbnbs and all of the hotels are ridiculously overpriced for what you get.  I don't mind forking over some cash to stay in a nice spot, but this is pissing me off.  Trying to book a month in advance and the prices are basically double what we spent to stay in New Orleans, Dallas, and Phoenix.

She’ll go wherever, i.e. somewhere in Europe or South Pacific is game, my ideal location will prob end up being in Carribean or Central America. I told her a flight to Bali averages 27 hours yesterday and she was unphased. I don’t think I could handle that.

Going in Sept, would prefer somewhere warm. 99% sure we’ll be leaving U.S.

The idea of going to Europe is growing on me, but it seems like a lot more work/planning/travel than sitting on a beach getting drunk. I’m not a huge sightseer and don’t know if I would appreciate Spain/France/Italy. Germany for Oktoberfest sounds p cool. I think I would be more of an England/Ireland type of person but idk if this is a good trip for that.

I wouldn't go anywhere near the UK or Ireland in September. Genuinely, I have no idea what kind of state the country will be in - there are already plenty of warnings to residents to stock up on medicines etc. I would actively avoid planning a trip there this year.

Spain is a great shout, because you can do lying on a beach and drinking pina coladas by the pool in a swanky resort to your heart's content just as you can in the Caribbean, but unlike the Caribbean if she does want to do a day or two of sightseeing then you can do that as well - and don't forget that it's her honeymoon as well as yours. There are also loads of great golf courses on the Spanish Algarve.

South of France is beautiful, if you plan it right you can break up your beach holiday with sightseeing trips to places like Monaco and Nice, which means you get to look at superyachts and ludicrous European sports cars. Lots of good golf there as well.

2 recommendations, based upon personal experience-

1)  Amalfi Coast- Italy- got engaged there and visited some amazing towns after leaving Naples, including Amalfi, Revello, Positano and Capri, with a ton of smaller towns thrown in between.

2)  Greek Isle- Honeymoon was here.  Santorini was laid back and beautiful, you'll never forget it. Mykonos was the party island. Both had alot to offer.

Don't do a regular Caribbean trip or something so close. Do something now that you won't have the ability to do when you have kids down the road and it's not as easy to go further away.

Does it say anything about minting the yard?  Cuz that yard is begging for a minting.  Or just take a excrement on the driveway.

Probably gonna be taking the family on a vacation in Northern Vermont this summer.  About 5 miles or so from the Canadian border.  Thought about driving up to Montreal for a night/day.  Any recommendations of things to do there?  Probably 1 day, might be the only time I ever go. Not worth bothering? Curse out french people for being lazy?

Go to Edinburgh, because it's awesome.

Go play golf, because I don't think there's such a thing as a bad course in Scotland. (Maybe avoid that one course that you know who owns.)

Go to a Scotch distillery, I don't like the stuff personally but I'm told they're pretty good at making it over there.

The four mile hike from the closest bus stop to our hotel in Glencoe proved thar the terrain was inhospitable. The staff at the hotel offering us a free ride back to the bus stop at check out when none of the cabs were available proved the people weren't.

Bonus enjoyment: my friend getting destroyed by the bus driver for being unable to pronounce anything correctly.

Staying at the Seadust, but a lot of these hotels in the hotel zone are all pretty good, similar.

We went to Turks and Caicos last month. Turks has immaculate, damn near perfect white sand beaches, but it would probably be better for adults.  Kids wouldn't appreciate it. More excrement to do for kids in Cancun.  Turks is damn near perfect though.  Room temperature with a very slight breeze outside, white sand smooth beach.  Don't waste that with kids.

Turks is so pristine, I guess 'family' depends on whether you're talking about toddlers vs. adolescents.  And while I agree that Cancun is more activity-oriented I (I'm going get killed for this-ha) prefer Turks more chill vibe.
