2 first rounders, likely missed badly on both. Damn that's bad.

I think Manziel still has a chance in this league.

PFT sucks.

Manziel loses starting role to McCown in week 3. I can only assume theyre blaming Manziels 4 fumbles.

There is nothing wrong with sitting him. He is still learning and the talent around him isn't great. You tell him he did a good job filling in for Josh and we're really happy with your progression. Manziel wasn't very effective in the first 2 weeks. He made a couple of nice TD throws to Benjamin but it wasn't like he made a good read you see Cover 0 or Cover 1 on a play action with your fastest receiver and know he's open.
-
There is nothing wrong with sitting him.
There's potentially a lot wrong with sitting him. They spent a high draft pick on him and he just won them a game.
If McCown comes in and does well, it's a different story. But we all know that's highly unlikely. It's a potential disaster move for their front office and coaching staff. The fans will turn on them quickly if this decision fails.

They're named correctly then.

Funny that the most prolific curser on here can't view the site due to cursing.
The mods should change his name to Miami freak and remove the filter so he can't see anything.

I have zero issues with it, thank you for it. It's only a couple of months before I can get the hell out of that place anyhow.

manziel, hes a freaking moron. what more do you need to hear? Benching him after a win was pretty stupid, I'll give you that. So was going out and doing the one thing your not supposed to given your history, a week into being handed the starting job.
sad part is i think he can play. Pettine mightve screwed the pooch, but I dunno how else do you get through to this freaking kid. he still thinks hes at basketball games holding Drakes hand. im pretty sure Hotline Bling is about their romance going sour.
I will say, subbing in Austin Davis after McCown went down was pretty stupid
this is what happens when a shitty franchise drafts a retard. I hope he gets his excrement together, because he is fun to watch. Also , with this last generation of QB's with only a few years left, hes in a prime spot to become a premier player. Only if he can stop drinking in public.
I dont understand with his money why he doesnt just throw huge blowouts at his place and have secruity confiscate all recording devices upon entry.
oh well. freak the browns anyways, theyre cursed.

I don't necessarily disagree with any of this, but Austin Davis isn't why they lost last night. He got them the tying TD and back in position for a shot at the winning FG.

He did a solid job and they lost on a fluke play. Well amazing return but the circumstances for thst were insane.
I just don't think someone like Manziel learns from that. That's an NCAA punishment.
Go for the win. He's good enough to start. He's at least good enough to come in out the dunce cap corner to try to get a W

Manziel needs to grow up, that's on him. The one thing the coach can control is playing time, so I can see where Pettine was coming from, and he got away with it from a QB standpoint at least for that game. At 2-8 or whatever, maybe in the big picture the lesson was more important than the game, however it turned out.
-
Manziel is back to being the starting QB next week. That's assuming he doesn't go out this week and get shitfaced on camera, which is far from a given.

Rand Getlin @Rand_Getlin
In speaking with multiple sources, there's a sense within the #Browns org that Sunday will be the last time Mike Pettine coaches the team.

He was freaking retarded taking that job in the first place.

As such, I think he probably never gets another HC shot at the NFL level.
Nobody will hold failure in Cleveland against him, but nobody else would have considered him as a HC candidate but the Browns before, and I doubt anybody does now.

I wouldn't expect someone who spends 14-15 hours a day working with players and watching film to be a jovial fellow.

Ian Rapoport: #Browns coach Mike Pettine lost Jimmy Haslam's confidence. Example: To players losing to KC, he guaranteed victory. They rolled their eyes.
Another Pettine example: Before 2nd #Bengals game, he told players Saturday night he might be getting fired & they hadn't done their part.
#Browns coach Mike Pettine asked Jimmy Haslam Fri. if he'd be kept. Haslam didn't say. But Haslam had already made calls to begin the search
#Browns GM Ray Farmer may be fired without ever hiring a coach. Had 2 top picks forced on him: Manziel (Haslam's call), Gilbert (Pettine's)

Manziel in Dallas would be such a mess
True hed be better than most backups Romo has had recently, but the guy would have no chance at success.

I think Dallas is by far his best chance of success. He has fans, family, a support network, a solid locker room and a great veteran to learn from.

I'll counter that with why waste your time on someone who treats this job as a "right" and not a privilege.
I get that it's Cleveland, but you still need to show some professionalism.

Of course he does....but so did Josh Gordon and Justin Blackmon.

Some turn it around with the right coaching, some don't. I wouldn't assume that a player coming from the graveyard of ambition that is Cleveland is necessarily a lost cause.

True. Vick was better and had even more athletic ability. Both never lived up to what they should have been.

When's the last time the Patriots ended up trading a player without off the field problems that ended up being really good for the other team? Garoppolo looks like he might be good, so I'm quite happy to see the filth trade him away.
Garoppolo will be in the final year of his rookie contract. And they're not going to tag him with Brady still playing at a high level, and there's no reason he would stay as a backup for peanuts when he could get a monster contract as an UFA.
The Patriots trading him for a bounty isn't something a Jets fan should want. Even if he had high level talent Brady ensure he would never see the field on his contract

Bengals and Browns tried, but failed, to complete trade for QB AJ McCarron before deadline, per sources. Deal was “close”; not finalized.

Supposedly the deal was done but the Browns didn't get the necessary paperwork in in time.

New report saying the Browns sent the Bengals a signed paper, but the Bengals sent a signed paper to the league that didn't have the Browns signature on it.
Who knows. Either way, it would be funny if McCarron had to play against the Browns later in the year.

And just like that, the #Browns own picks No. 1 and No. 4 overall.
good chance the Browns end up with a QB and a stud Tackle or Saquon....no wonder Dorsey took that GM job.

Normally when it comes to the browns, I'd agree with you. But Dorsey did a pretty decent job building the roster in KC before he was canned (still can't believe that happened).
I would say based on his resume, Cleveland's cap space and their draft pick firepower....he's going to turn that franchise around pretty damn quick.
Hell, I would even keep Hue Jackson. Despite his shitty record, I still think he's a pretty good offensive mind.
-
How can you consistently excrement on Todd Bowles and then praise Hue Jackson?
-
How can you consistently excrement on Todd Bowles and then praise Hue Jackson?
I didn't praise him, but he was dealt a shittier hand than Bowles. The clown who was running the Browns before Dorsey was terrible.
Bowles is a great DC, I'm not sold on him as a HC...sorry. He's a quieter, more reserved version of Rex Ryan.
you're willing to give Bowles and his CS another year, but Hue shouldn't get one with better mgmt. at the helm?

It has nothing to do with management. He was hired to coach the players on that roster.
Hue Jackson hasn’t won a game. That roster is on par with the NYJ roster. Bowles has a garbage roster competing with good, playoff caliber teams on a consistent basis.
-
If you want to rebuild something, it takes time. To me, this team is on the right track.
A lot of the young players are developing.
-

I don't agree with that. Mgmt is responsible for providing the best roster they can for their coach. If Dorsey remakes that roster into something better, and Hue still fucks that up...then i'll agree with you.
Bowles is basically in the same boat, except the Jets FO is more competent.
I also don't agree with Bowles having his team compete on a consistent basis....maybe for home games, but on the road that's not happening. The games in Denver and TB were an embarrassment.
-

Yes it takes time...we're on the same page there. I just don't agree that Bowles is the guy to drive it. If he proves me wrong, great, wouldn't be the first time. But he hasn't yet....and he's been here 3 years.

Hahaha the Jets even won with a cast off QB from that team. What do you expect from Moron Butthole?
-
The only things Bowles and Ryan have in common are their defensive backgrounds and coaching the Jets. They are not similar. Bowles doesn't let his players run the show. He also isn't loyal to a fault like Ryan was. Ryan had much better rosters when he was in New York and tore them down with Tannenbaum/Idzik. Bowles is competing with the mess that they made.
-
I sat through 4 trash years with Rex, I don't want to do that again.
Ryan thought he could win championships with what he had and made a bunch of reactionary, win-now moves.
That's why this team is in the state that it's in now. That's why this team was projected to win one or two games.

In the end, you have to play with who you have. You want to fire a guy that is competing with a torn down roster. This will take time. 2018 will be an up-and-down season too, especially if we draft a quarterback.
I also don't agree with Bowles having his team compete on a consistent basis....maybe for home games, but on the road that's not happening. The games in Denver and TB were an embarrassment.
The Jets beat Buffalo, Jacksonville, and Kansas City. These are playoff caliber football teams.
The Jets lost to Carolina, New England, and Atlanta by one score or less. Two of these teams are Super Bowl contenders. Aside from Ingram's late TD, the Jets hung with New Orleans yesterday too.
6 of 9 losses have been decided by one score or less.
Bowles has this team competing against much better competition...with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty at QB.

In 2017, I was willing to take the 1 or 2 win season to get a QB. I hate losing, man. But I was willing to crack a few eggs to make the omelet this season. Tanking is freaking stupid, but we need a QB. A really good one would probably make Bowles look like a decent coach.
-

I'd give him until 2019. If this team takes a step back or stays stagnant next year, then everyone should go.
But they have been gearing up for this since the beginning. The first season was just a mirage. He was winning with a pretty bad team then too. Fitzpatrick just played out of his mind until the shoe dropped at the end of 2015.
This was the plan. Tear down what Tannenbaum and Idzik built for Ryan. Maccagnan and Bowles have four premium picks in the first three rounds and $83M in cap space (before Wilkerson gets released).

tanking IS stupid....but it was necessary this year in the hopes of landing a bluechip QB in the draft. I've maintained that opinion since the summer.
-
you're not concerned that the Jets only have 4 road wins over the last 2 seasons....and those wins came against Buffalo, SF, and Cle twice?
It is concerning, but those are the kind of teams this team can beat on the road lately because we have similar talent levels.
-

Say we tanked...we're still not worse than the Browns.
What if only Josh Rosen comes out and Darnold stays? Rosen belongs to the Cleveland Browns.
You're going to draft an undersized, system quarterback (a project) in Baker Mayfield with the second overall pick?
Tanking was not necessary and it's never a sure thing. The Jets need good players. Not just a quarterback. Our offensive line is awful. Our pass rush is awful.
This team just needs good players, whether we're picking #1 or #9.

Normally I value both of your opinions...
but then Tapatalk was down and the web version of this thread took me back to 2015 where both of you agreed that Johnny Manziel had a good chance to be a real NFL QB.
Which is right up there with me advocating Crapenberg to be the Jets 2017 starter during training camp this year.

Johnny Manziel's problem was never talent. He can't help himself off the field.

I was sooooooo pissed when we took Pryor over Manziel. Turns out either decision would have been a excrement one.

There in lies the rub. It's a risk obviously.
Yes, we need a good players. It seems that's a theme that's been on repeat since the dawn of time. The fact that we still need a better pass rush after investing so many 1st round picks on the defensive side of the ball, makes me want to burn down houses.
The QB class is supposed to be a good one in 2018, I figured this was the time to risk a tank season, and try for one. You know, try something different.

Manziel would have been worse. You don't waste as much time on a safety and set your whole team back for years. Plus he wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in New York without f*cking up.

Browns released him, apparently he's likely to serve 8-12 months. He's only 27 and he'll likely have access to good training facilities at whatever minimum security white collar prison he ends up at, so it shouldn't be more than a career hiatus for him.

I get that it's Texas college and HS football and it's all oh-so-important to everybody down there, but this tool is busy using his very high profile public position to slag off teams who could be providing his next left tackle or wideout or running back in the draft, and if they come into his team already thinking he's a queynte then he's not doing himself or his team any favours.

he said he was 'backing up' garrett. his idea of that consisted of blindsiding rudolph, who was doing nothing at that point, while garrett was getting pummeled by pouncey on the floor.

Only thing I questioned was the timing, but I think now that might be to our advantage. If Douglas has a huge jump on other new GMs we might see more teams make a switch earlier. When you think about it, now through June is the GM's season, June through now is the coaches'.

Grossi was caught on a hot mic at the NFL Combine referring to Mayfield as a “f—ing midget.” The context of the conversation, which Grossi did not realize was being aired live, was that the Browns have missed out on a number of top quarterbacks over the years and are now stuck with Mayfield, whom Grossi has openly criticized in the past. The conversation was aired on a video feed by TheLandonDemand.com while Grossi’s “The Really Big Show” on ESPN Cleveland/WKNR 850 was at a commercial break.

Definitely not. For a start the Lions haven't won a playoff game since they drafted Stafford, and that was before the Rex era.
Edit: the Lions have the second longest playoff win drought, their last postseason victory was against Dallas in the '91 Divisional playoff.
The longest playoff win drought belongs to the Bengals, whose last postseason win was against the Oilers in the '90 Wildcard.
We don't even have close to the longest win drought in the division, the Dolphins' last playoff victory was in 2000 and the Bills' was in 1995.

For most of the Patriots era we were the only AFC East team to do anything. Lions have won one playoff game since the 60s, the game in 1991, I've actually seen the Bengals in two Super Bowls in my lifetime.
There's only a small handful of teams I've not seen in the Super Bowl, the Jets being one of them. Others are the Browns, Jags, Texans and Lions.

Kind of. They moved to Tennessee in 97, became the Titans in 99 and went to the Super Bowl that year. The Ravens who have won it twice are the former Browns but they can't count for both.

I do, too, and I worry about Beckham disrupting chemistry. At the same time, our receiving corps could always use an upgrade, and a Beckham-Davis-Moore trio for next season is really interesting with Mims as the WR4. We could move Moore into the slot.
I assume Beckham would want to play for a better team and better QB, but maybe he wants to come back to New York, and maybe he doesn't really care about winning as much as his own production/star power.

I wouldn't touch Beckham with a 10-foot pole at this point.

Pretty sure some people were concerned about Brandon Marshall's past disruptive behaviour before we signed him. Before that the same people were worried about us signing malcontents and troublemakers like Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes.
Beckham's speed, hands and separation combined with Zach's arm? I can probably overlook a lot of dickwad behaviour to see that on a field.

Yep, the question is how much of a dickwad is he. Braylon and Santonio were brought in to support a young quarterback. Braylon was a diva but he worked hard here. Santonio was a diva, and he eventually blew up in our faces, but not for a couple years, and he was still a net positive for the team.
Granted, maybe Odell isn't that good right now, but it does seem like he gets open. And at his best, he's a YAC machine, which is useful in this offense.

I feel like although we have a young team, we have some leaders on the team and hopefully a strong locker room culture. Players like Mosley, Rankins, JFM, Moses, Davis and now Tard all seem like pretty solid and grounded guys. I think there's plenty of room for the kind of talent Beckham would bring.

Earlier today, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski told his players that Odell Beckham Jr. is essentially not on the team right now and that the WR has been told to stay at home.
I'm a little confused as to why they'd make this decision the day after the trade deadline. Browns gonna Browns, I guess.

I was just chatting with a colleague who is a Browns fan. He thinks the Browns are close to just cutting him and eating the money.
"it's obvious that he and Baker aren't a fit, the stats show it. all of Baker's good games were without OBJ on the field. just need to cut out the cancer"

The dudes contract is very attractive, something like 2 years remaining with an APY of 15 million with very little guaranteed.
At the absolute worst they're getting a 2nd for him, unless you think cutting him wins you a. SB, you deal with this season best you can

A 2nd-round pick for a 29-year old receiver who is injured a lot, has had locker room issues, and is averaging 42 yards per game the last 2 seasons seems very steep.

He's also a dude who used to be a top 3 wideout?, has no guaranteed money on his contract, and wouldn't even be a top 20 paid wideout the next 2 seasons.
He's not a dude on a rookie contract, but he's not far off from that either.

As much as Florio is a stupid sack of excrement, I think there's a lot of credence to his theory that OBJ deliberately timed voicing his displeasure to coincide with the end of the trade deadline.
Browns have no choice but to either deal with it now, suspend him for conduct detrimental and deal with it in a month, or release him and let him go through waivers at which point he's a free agent and can double dip on his termination pay while choosing his next destination.
...Unless of course someone claims him on waivers. Which I absolutely freaking would if I'm Joe D and I had the opportunity.

Browns working on converting Odell Beckham Jr.’s base salary into signing bonus to lower his cap number in an attempt to save money.
Once contract is finalized - anytime in next few days - OBJ will be released, as @ProFootballTalk/ @CharlesRobinson reported.

They have a deal and he'll be released today with all but vet minimum converted to a signing bonus.

Detroit, Miami, Houston, Jacksonville ahead of us. I can see him wanting Miami but I don't think Flores would want any part of him, nor would Houston. He'd be a big upgrade in Detroit but I have no idea if they'd want his personality, and I'm very sure he'd be unhappy about going there. Jacksonville look light at WR with Chark out, I can see them being interested.

His contract situation isn't horrendous, and you'd be able to guarantee getting him instead if your competition.

The #Browns and G Wyatt Teller have reached agreement on a four-year contract extension, sources say. He was slated to be a free agent after the season. Now, he’s under contract through 2025 in Cleveland, where OL coach Bill Callahan has tapped into his potential.

This would be an interesting game to play. Where does Mayfield go? Can Minnesota get out of Cousins deal? If so I’d see that as a spot.
Maybe Seattle or Houston if they move on from their current situations.

Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reports the Browns "are prepared to pay him [David Njoku] the double-digit millions he’ll get on the open market."
There have also been reports that the Browns could franchise tag Njoku. The well-documented buzz around him returning to Cleveland points toward the team parting ways with Austin Hooper. The Browns can save a few million dollars in 2022 by cutting him in the spring and that number jumps to $9.5 million if he is cut after June 1st. With Harrison Bryant also playing well on his limited reps behind Hooper, the Browns have no reason to hang onto the veteran tight end. All signs point to Njoku returning as the starter with Bryant playing an expanded role in his third season.
Was hoping he'd make it to FA. I'm not crazy about him and I definitely prefer Schultz but it's good to have options.
-
Cleveland can continue to neutralize Njoku by using him as a pass protector...
-
that surprises me. Njoku is set to make “tens of millions” on the open market. Is that like $20 million over 4 year? Or like $11 million per year? Because I can’t see him making that much on the market, he doesn’t have the production but he is likely TE2 on the market after Schultz

This would be worse than our situation, we didn't give Sanchez anything beyond what would have been the 5th and final year of his rookie contract anyway. Cleveland and Baker are already at that point this year.

He has plenty of footing to threaten them. This is the last year of his rookie contract. If he's not willing to extend, wtf are they going to do? Franchise tag him the next two years?
He has enough leverage to squeeze
That's a cap hit of probably like 34 ish and then maybe 40 million for a guy whose somewhere in the top 15 QB range

The could just play him this year and let him walk. It isn't about 2023/4. What other option does he have this year besides playing or pitching a Jamal Adams until everyone hates him? What's he gonna do, hold out? I don't think they give a excrement about keeping him around long term. He didn't exactly have a stellar year last year. Worst year of his career so far. They had a losing record. He's a placeholder.

He's a 26 year old QB who is presumably better than every single QB in this year's NFL draft.
He's not elite, he's not borderline elite.
But he's almost certainly worth at least a 1st round draft pick, potentially a little bit more because he's a young good QB.
You don't let Baker walk away. Look what the freaking jets got for Sam Darnold. Baker has been exponentially better.
Hell how many teams could instantly chomp at the bit for him? Pittsburgh, Seattle, Houston, Indy, possibly NO.
The dudes not a world beater. But he will 100% have a hot market
And he doesn't have to hold out, he has to say freak you I won't sign an extension. He's too valuable to let walk

I don't like Baker as a man or as a player, but that's a bold take. I can certainly see the argument that you'd rather have a rookie than pay Mayfield his 5th year salary (I think about $19M), but more talented?
-

Baker Mayfield is 6'0. He's slow. He has a bum shoulder. Everyone is at fault but him.
I don't want that kind of QB on my team.
Malik Willis has just as much arm talent and he can run. Plus, he isn't a turd.
-
That's the problem with taking an undersized QB without a great raw skillset that high. You are less likely to get the second chance.
https://twitter.com/NFL_DovKleiman/status/1505955856797642754
I thought Baker would have some value since he was a year removed from a 26 TD/8 Int season and was the No. 1 overall pick recently, but I guess I underestimated how much of a turnoff the contract was. Thankfully, we traded Darnold when we did.
I wonder if he ends up going the Trubisky or Tannehill route. Trubisky spent a year basically away, and now looks a lot more appealing. Tannehill was traded to be a backup then took the job from a faltering Mariota. I imagine he will get another chance, assuming his shoulder is good.

Demand for QBs is too high for him not to get 1 more shot.

The interesting thing about Baker is you could trace say a 2nd for him and you'd very likely get back a compensatory 3rd if you let him walk
Assuming the asking price isn't more than a 2nd at this point, it's a very low risk move.
0% chance of it happening, but Miami trading for him would be interesting.

They have a bit under $7M in cap space before they rework some deals to fit Hill in and pay the small handful of late round rookies they'll be able to draft. How do you propose they also accommodate Faker's $18M in order for him to spend a season disrupting Tua?
Also, where are you proposing they get the 2nd round pick from, given their first pick is something like 102?
-

The cap games easy to play
And they have 2nd round picks next year
They can easily give a 3rd or 4th this year, with the 2nd to follow next.
It's stupid because I already acknowledged theres no chance it'll happen. But I do think Baker turns them into a playoff team.

Browns signed TE David Njoku to a four-year, $56.8 million extension.
As NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted, Njoku's yearly average of $14.2 million is the fifth-highest for a tight end. Cleveland placed the franchise tag on Njoku instead of letting him hit the open market, but a long-term deal was always the plan. Njoku has flashed a massive ceiling during his first five years, though he has yet to post a breakout season. The lucrative extension makes it clear that Cleveland sees him as an integral part of their offense and likely an every-down player. If Njoku can pair his playmaking ability with a larger role, an elite fantasy season is on the table
You do you, Cleveland.
-
You do you, Cleveland.
Remember when Jets fans were enamored with Njoku as the TE target and felt we could get him for $8-9 million a year because he's been unproductive and misused in Cleveland?
Dalton Shultz has to be pumped about this contract, and the Jets have to feel even better about Uzamoh and Conklin signings now since combined they are getting roughly Njoku's price, hell maybe even less.
-

Deshaun Watson's 2024 salary cap charge is $63.977 million. Cost to cut is $200.915 million. #Browns need something to really change here.
The Browns should actively encourage him to do stupid excrement off the field so they can void his guarantees. They are fucked for a long time unless he plays decent at some point. They should buy him hookers and deny they did it.

Brownies crowing about their helmets being ”the perfect symbol for the birthplace of football” when it’s common knowledge that the first game of gridiron (i.e. American) football was between the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Princeton.
Also nice to know that they’re heralding and celebrating a new era by with a return to their old helmets…or is it the white facemasks?…smh #woodycanrelate
