This thread probably won't get much traffic, but freak all you Rangers fans.
The Flyers are the cure for the common offensive cold so far. 5-4, did not see this coming.

obligatory support post

No-one cares.

Prrrrt

Y'all are just jelly of the best offense in the NHL.
-
Good start. I need the Devis to do something now that the Dodgers are out and the Jets are on life support.
-
did Patrick Elias turn 70 yet?
-
did Patrick Elias turn 70 yet?
No, but apparently Grandpa Brodeur wants to play again.

Who?
-
did Patrick Elias turn 70 yet?
He scored a goal.
-
3-0 start.
Another good game for the best goalie in the NJ/NY area.
-
Yeah, good win. Got the PP goal right after Tampa tied it, nice road trip to open the season so far.
-
Devils and Knicks, not a good night for the ongoing Italian Seafood Loss-O-Meter.
-
I like Schneider a lot, but the guy has never been a #1 goalie for an entire season, and the Devils aren't going to give him a game off every once in a while? It's not like benching a quarterback...
-
Last week they took him out for the third period back to back nights when we were getting. Beat. What happened to Clemenson?
Good to get the win here, had me worried. Great save on that 2 on 0.
-
Much needed win last night, Edmonton pulled the goalie with over 3:00 left. That always scares me, I don't think I've ever fully recovered from Game 7 in 2009 vs Carolina.

Johnny English at 11:19 PM EST with the Devils up 3-1 in the 2nd:
"how do the Devils keep winning?
it makes no sense"
You owe us a win.
-
Ha. No. I like the Devils losing, they irritate me.
-
lou lamoriello looks like 80 year old Tommy.
-
They gave away a point last night. Not sure why Jagr threw the puck in front of an empty net in the final seconds with a one goal lead. The Flames took it the length of the ice and tied the game with :05 left. And of course we lose the shootout.
-
The Italian Seafood Loss-O-Meter is going off track this week. Jets, Knicks, Devils, this thing is going to blow a tube.

I don't remember the Jets-Yanks and Devils all collectively being this shitty at one time. This is just terrrible.
How is DeBoer still the coach of this team? What's a guy gotta do to get fired around here?
Also, Marty signed with the Blues today. Good for him. I really hope this isn't a move where he only plays two or three games in another jersey and then is put on waivers when Elliot comes back, but we'll see. I'd like to see him get 700 and I'm happy he's on a team that's a contender.

Yeah. I'm glad he's in the west and hope he gets to do what he wants, he's earned that much. I had that one called all year, as soon as someone lost a goalie they'd be calling Marty.
Now we just have to win a game, which requires scoring a goal. Two shootouts in one season might be asking a bit much.

Somehow the Nets are the best team I root for right now. It's weird.

Yeah, Seton Hall's best year since Holloway and Dalembert couldn't have come at a better time.
-
Gomez sighting! Gonna party like it's 1999.
-
Marty starts for the Blues tonight. Very very weird, but I really hope he kicks derriere for them. Get him to 700. I only wish the Blues had a road date at the Rock so he could get his proper sendoff.
Lou came out and said firing DeBoer "isn't in his plans." Please please PLEASE let this be cryptic Lou speak for "this excrement continues until Christmas and he's freaking gone." Because if it's not then it's pretty obvious that finally at 138 years old, Lou has lost it.
-
I wish Marty had retired and played his whole career with the Devils, but if he still wants to play, and someone wants him, good for him, I hope he tears it up.
-
Marty is playing for the Blues and we have three goals. Two things I never thought I'd see.

A win!

A win!
enjoy it because we just filled our goal quota for the next two weeks.

Yeah, when we need one we can't get one, but when we're already ahead we get five.

A shootout win! Wow. Elias of course.
Congrats to Kinkaid for his first win, I like him better than Schneider.
-
bai Peter DeBoer

Stevens and Oates are the HCs with GM Lou as the GM on the bench/HC overseer of the two new HCs?

Sounds like Lou wasn't ready to name a full-time successor of the two. Hard not to be skeptical.

I thought Lou is head coach again with Stevens and Oates as assistants. Without better players it won't matter.

Two wins out of three in California, beat San Jose tonight. Maybe the only night all year the Knicks and Devils both win.

And the last link to the glory years, gone.
Love Patty. You hit the nail on the head MB, underrated player and he always exuded class. One of my favorite hockey memories is him hoisting the cup with Sykora's jersey on (that TAS line!!!! Great memories.) because Petr was in the hospital.
A rough year for sure, but I do have faith in Shero. He's done a good job acquiring assets, (as much as I love Lou, the shape he left the franchise in was woeful) and I'm definitely hopeful they can spin a pick and get good value on a player that a team is worried about losing in the expansion draft. And back up the money truck for Shatty. There's no reason why we shouldn't have the most cash on the table.

Do you need a hugely talented, occasionally frustrating and slightly overpaid left wing?

I always managed to draft Elias late in previous NHL Playoff drafts, and he's always paid dividends. A monster in the playoffs. #clutch

The A line was probably the greatest in team history. We're known for defense and the trap, but those 2000-01 teams had a lot of offense, led by that line and Mogilny on the second line.
-
Slightly surprised to see the Devils trade Zajac and Palmieri to the Isles, makes a bunch of sense for both teams on paper but it's presumably going to kill Devils fans if Zajac finally wins a cup and it's with the Isles.

I'm just happy Fitz was able to get a first, negligible as it may be. Teams are going to be looking to get compensated for players they might otherwise lose in the upcoming expansion draft, so its a chip.
Wish the best for Palms and Zajac and I'm especially glad Travis is going to be playing some meaningful hockey-but he's gotta be the most non-accomplished long term player the franchise ever had.

I keep forgetting about the expansion draft, it makes sense that trading a 35 year old for a good pick is an even smarter move with that coming up. The expansion draft is pretty much meaningless to us given we've got such a young team we're going to struggle to have enough players to actually expose, and probably happy to see the back of whoever it is that goes.

What a dub last night.
Hopefully Blackwoods injury doesn't keep him out for an extended period. Vanny stood on his head especially considering how he came in cold to fill in. I know Bernier's been practicing with the team, but Blackwood's the present/future.
The bottom lines have been fantastic. They most encouraging thing about this win streak is they're doing this with Jack looking somewhat flat and Shango doing absolutely nothing. Only a matter of time before those two (especially Hughes) kick it into gear.

The Devils remind me a lot of the Jets. Two young teams on long playoff droughts that finally are starting to turn it around with promising young cores.
If the Devils had a goalie, they could be Cup contenders this year.
If the Jets had a QB, they could be SB contenders this year.
Jets are banking on Zach Wilson's development speeding up this season. Devils were banking on a Blackwood bounceback with Vanacek. If Blackwood is hurt, I wonder if they look to make a trade at some point, especially if Vanacek is inconsistent.

Vanacek has actually played really well, but that's in a limited sample size. I would think if Bernier can actually play (I thought he was done done?!), that they're going to trot him out there initially as a backup, and any impulse to deal for a goalie is also going to depend on how long Blackwood is actually out for.

It also depends how good this team is. If the 5-on-5 numbers remain as good as they are, we might want to strike while the iron is hot and try to upgrade that position.
That's fair about Vanacek. I held the Red Wings game against him more than I should. He will get an extended chance to take that job now. However, I'm not sold on him being a guy you really want as your No. 1 goalie in the playoffs. And it's so hard to trust Blackwood at this point, even if he gets healthy.
The Devils might be the best 5-on-5 team in the NHL so far. If that continues for a few more months, they need to make sure we have quality goaltending.

Agreed with all of this.
7 in a row, makes me wonder if Johnny Hockey's regretting his decision. That might be a dodged bullet considering what this team is going to have to pay Bratt. Can't lose him under any circumstances.
Apparently Bernier reinjured himself, so at the very least if Blackwood is out 4-6 weeks, it might behoove Fitz to give the Sens a call on Cam Talbott a call for a mutually beneficial albeit temporary pairing.
-
There is absolutely zero chance we're taking a call about Talbot, he's our #1 and we are supposedly trying to be competitive this year.

I thought Anton Forsberg was your #1?
If that's the case, then agreed, its entirely too early for Ottawa to make that kind of deal, even with their slow start. Lot of new bodies in that dressing room, 12 games doesn't define a season good or bad.

In fairness they actually played well today (was very impressed with Forsberg), and Devils caught a break late in the game on what should have been a penalty against Graves.
Sens have too much talent to be 4-8-1.

We got shellacked in the second and were lucky to get a loser point. We have a lot of talent on offense, but we're dreadful in our own zone - we don't clear effectively, our zone exits are often terrible (qv twice in the third period when we had a defenseman behind the net with the puck waiting for the forwards to create space and passing lanes and both times ended up giving the puck directly to a Devil), and our transition game is to put it politely a bit seat of the pants.
For the fourth time in four seasons we're having a dreadful start to the season and playing ourselves out of contention before the Christmas trees have gone up. This is 100% on coaching and I'm not watching this team any more until DJ Smith is fired.

I know Chicago is really bad, but the Devils beat the ever loving excrement out of them last night.
Wonder if Patty Kane took a look across the ice and thought "hmmmmm." Would love to have his experience in the room for a playoff run even if the price is a first and a prospect like Stillman.

I wouldn't go higher than a first and prospect of the ilk of a Shakir Mukhamadullin. I hope that Palat comes back and is healthy, but there's something to be said about adding playoff experience to a room that has almost none of it.
He's also an absolute turd of a man.

In fairness, Toews was the captain.
As much as we're in fundamental agreement on how the Blackhawks as an organization failed Kyle Beach and deserve to lose forever because of it, (and I have absolutely zero issue if people like Quenneville and Bowman never worked in hockey again), I think the list of people who failed in that scenario is super long before we get to Kane.

You're right, he had an A. But I don't think that massively changes the fact that not only did the team know, they mocked and chirped Beach about it while the veteran leaders on the team like Kane stood by and said nothing (or worse, joined in) because winning hockey games was more important to them.
Others hold a higher degree of culpability but I wouldn't want spineless turds like Kane anywhere near any team I cheer for.
-
I'd prefer not root for Kane, but the idea of adding someone with Stanley Cup experience is appealing. I wouldn't be in a rush to make a trade though. Plenty of time before the deadline. But this team is good enough to win a Cup, so I'm all for trying to add to this roster at the deadline.
Plus, Luke Hughes potentially come playoff time.

Agreed. Absolutely no rush, especially since Palat will be coming back hopefully in mid-February and will be able to provide the postseason know-how that the team just doesn't have right now.
But if all it's going to cost is a first and a B-level prospect, I'm all about it as much as I don't like the character of the player. This team has two of the best defensive prospects (Hughes is probably the best) in the game, and youth all throughout the system with guys like Stillman, Foote, Walsh, etc. The perception of the franchise as a wasteland ever since Zach and Kovy left can change right now. Plus it shows Bratt they're willing to do whatever it takes and he should sign already.
-
Absolutely much needed W today. Hell of a comeback.
I know I apologized to Lindy, but he needs to freaking stop putting Haula on Jack's line. Having him out there as the extra man a couple days ago was freaking absurd. He's a third line center. He's a decent third line center. Stop trying to smash a square peg in a round hole.
I can't wait to see what this team looks like next year with Luke and Nemec.
As an aside...those "heritage" jerseys are freaking disgusting, I wish they'd burn them already.
-

3 in a row as one hopes they continue to put a mediocre december in the rearview.
As much as Lindy has become somewhat teflon because of their record, I still maintain that putting Haula on the top line is smashing a square peg in a round hole.
Fitzy can't get gun shy at the deadine, this team needs a top 6 winger.

What a save by Vanacek in the shootout.
-
7-3 in January.
-
I still maintain that this team could use a winger for the top 6 to play with Jack. They have the depth in their system to deal a first if it means bringing in a guy like a Timo Meier.
That's going to be the price even if he's a strict rental. Too many buyers, not enough sellers, especially if Patty Kane is resolved to finish the year in Chicago.

I absolutely love Rico.
Unless they plan on bouncing him to the wing, he makes no sense. As it stands, they need to stop forcing Haula on the top 6.
Timo Meier makes a ton of sense, but like anything else, its relative to cost. Especially since he'll likely be a rental.
Hell of a stretch from Hamilton. Great to see them steal a W considering they were thoroughly outplayed for two periods last night.
-
That's the worst defensive performance they put forth all year.
Can't blame Blackwood (who actually played relatively well) when the D is giving away breakaways at an insane pace. Severson and Graves specifically looked like excrement tonight.
Gotta check the back of my milk carton to see if I see a picture of Miles Wood.

What a hell of a job to absolutely steal 2 points on the road. Great play from McLeod. Would be interesting to see how he could do on a line with someone that could score instead of the soggy corpse of Miles Wood.

Acknowledging the fact that the Blue Jackets have been horrible this year, as their record reflects.
They're coming off of a big win.
They played very well on the backcheck last night and especially in their own zone getting in front of shots.
Devils are without their best player and a guy that if not for McDavid putting up a hundred zillion points this year, would be getting more buzz for the Hart.
Here's hoping Jack can play tomorrow night, but I honestly don't expect him back until Sunday at the earliest, and even that might be optimistic.

Hughes is the real deal alright. Hope his ‘week-to-week’ injury isn’t serious.

Vanecek needed that shutout.
They need to figure out ways to spell him more often as we come down the stretch. It was fairly obvious he was going to hit a wall given his workload.
Schmid has been lights out. Blackwood should be back. They have options to give him the rest necessary to keep him fresh for the playoffs.
Sunday was encouraging on multiple fronts. Jack had his best game since coming back off injury, Bratter looked better than he has in weeks and they were more physical then the Canes which was my biggest concern for this team.
LFG tonight. Tampa's looking to right their ship after a bit of a swoon over the last month.
-
what a kick in the balls last night was.
I'm sorry but this "they're not going to call a penalty that late in overtime" excrement is freaking nonsense. So now people have cart blanche? Meier blatantly gets interfered with and Jack gets hooked. And it still took a ridiculously lucky bounce right on Boldy's stick.
The encouraging thing is Vanny had his best game in about two months last night.

I'm still very worried about the inability of the team to win any of the physical battles along the boards and in the neutral zone necessary to generate offense if/when teams clog the high slot and they can't get something going off the forecheck when they flood the zone. Not to mention how bad the D has been in front of the net lately. Old friend Kyle Palmieri literally skated freaking circles around the net Monday with Graves and Wood either getting juked out of their skates or just inexplicably not throwing their body at him. In fairness to Graves, he made an excellent play last night to preserve the lead when the Rangers had the extra man.
At the same time, my expectations this year were that they'd compete for an 8th seed before either narrowly missing the playoffs or making it and getting derriere blasted in the 1st round. I couldn't be more pleased with how its all coming together, and Timo's going to be a big piece moving forward both for his scoring touch and his size.
Haula's not even that big, but he's been the most physical player on the ice. I'd love to bring him back and keep him as the third line center.
Vanny played his best game since the initial run in November last night. He was super sharp.

I can take or leave Vanacek or Schmid next game. Vanacek hasn't been good enough. Schmid was actually better this season in a small sample. It's certainly not all on Vitek, but he's allowed 9 goals in 2 games.
I think you play Luke next game. Don't want to see Brendan Smith or Miles Wood out there next game either.

If this ends in a sweep, I would be on board with firing Lindy. I didn't think he should have been retained for this year, and they hired Brunette as the essential coach-in-waiting.
Hard to fire a guy when you exceed expectations like this, but I'm fine making Lindy our Mark Jackson/Buck Showalter.

Ok but in all fairness mj Jack Hughes (who is awesome) & his linemates aren't getting help from NJ's secondary lines.
- Devils taking ill-advised penalties (NYR PP: Devils aren't denying Fox straight-on shots that Kreider's tipping in left & right)
- NYR 3rd and esp. their 4th lines are keeping the Devils from turning this into a free-wheeling skatefest (i.e. while the Rangers have 'wheels' imho the Devils enjoy the slight edge overall speed-wise).

All of this is very true. Igor's made nice saves when he's had to as well, though he hasn't been overly tested either.
But that's what happens when you have a team that can't score if the high slot is clogged or they can't generate turnovers in the offensive or neutral zone. They can't generate anything when they're pushed along the boards, its been that way all year.
But as much as the Rangers have the clear experience edge, the special teams should not be this bad. Chris Kreider is a tremendous player who's always hurt the Devils, but he looks like freaking Ovechkin out there.
Lindy going to Brendan Smith in Game 2 and refusing to sit Miles Wood (I cannot WAIT until he fucks off in free agency) for Curtis Lazar has really hurt this team, but it doesn't matter when you have absolutely no answer as a staff to try and find a fast, young, high scoring core some space.

Good as he was, Igor was further tested as the ”land of the 8-letter alphabet” satans were the stronger finishers.
For the NYR, again Igor was sharp….on tbe other hand the breadman’s (Panarin) shot was “garbage-meets-trash” accuracy-wise not to mention Patrick Kane overall sucking the big one as well…..inho..
That said, in addition, Igor was gooned up by NJD’s Meier…no call….while down the other end of the ice Panarin was being gooned-up as well (albeit the runt is stupidly reacted). Long story short: NJ was awarded a 2-1 penalty advantage ehere it could’ve/ should’ve (could’ve been deserved a 2-man advantage for the good team).

Well, that was brutal.
It's been a very fun and exciting ride considering the wilderness the franchise was in over the last decade.
But...people forget the absolute set of brass balls Lou had in acquiring talent and dealing beloved players away, players that won cups here (Randy McKay, Arnott, Sykora, Guerin, etc etc etc), in order to reinvent the team to continue to win. Does Fitz have that kind of foresight and gumption?
Basically thats my long winded way of asking if Fitz has the balls to deal say a Bratt in a hockey trade, or do the easy thing and overpay him the 8x8.5 that he wants.

Great job by Fitz getting a third for someone who was going to walk away because CBus had to commit to the 8th year to bring in Severson.
I'm not the Severson hater some others are in the fanbase. He has his good points, he has holes in his game. Honestly, considering the season the Blue Jackets had, an AAV of 6.1 for him isn't crazy. But that term is freaking ridiculously horrible. No question he's either getting packaged with a pick and dumped on a bottom feeder floor team by year 6, or bought out.

Last night was their worst performance by far, but not for nothing, what the freak is the NHL doing scheduling a back to back when they literally just wrapped up a road trip. They went from out west, to Columbus, to immediately playing.
It definitely affected them, they looked slow, tired and sluggish.
Some rando website spewed a rumor of Holtz, Seamus Casey and a first for Gibson and if Fitz did that he should be run out on the same rail that I wish would take the Jets braintrust out of town.

Nemec has been fantastic. Especially with Dougie's injury, I'm still glad they didn't part with him even if Helly's been awesome which he has. Nemec and Casey (as well as a cap crunch) might force them to partially retain on Dougie and give a draft pick to a floor team to take him as soon as next year.
The real problem facing this team from a cap perspective (and it's going to freak them if/when they want to make a movie for a goalie) is they've given huge financial commitments to two guys that haven't done excrement in Timo and Palat. I can forgive Fitzy on Timo-its still early anyway. The Palat overpay was obvious the second they put pen to paper.

Hellebuyck was always a good bet this year, but you're giving up a lot of assets AND have to pay him a ton of money through his late 30's. Risky contract. The way it's worked out so far, maybe you take that risk, but I would not feel comfortable paying Hellebuyck that much for that long AND giving up key assets.

Joe Piscopo used to be the grand marshall for their Stanley Cup wins. If you're from NJ and remotely known to the public then the Devils will shove you in front of the camera.

Fitz is going to need to be further scrutinized. The Meier trade hasn't looked great, the Shango for Toffoli deal looks absolutely freaking awful. He hung with Lindy way too long and didn't address the goalie situation when the team had a window.
Not saying to fire the guy, he's going to get to pick the next coach (Gallant? Guy Boucher?), but he's on a much closer microscope and hotter seat then I would've thought he'd be on at this point.

100% agree with all of this. I'm still on board with Fitz, but the goalie/coaching situations are on him, and his big moves recently have not worked great.

Didn't we all agree on the Meier move (being good)? If it hasn't worked out that has to be on the player or the coaching.
