THERE WAS A PAUSE. It was Aug. 9, inside Roger Goodell's sixth-floor office at the NFL's Park Avenue headquarters in New York City -- down the hall, past the executives' offices and his assistant's desk, and through a large, thick wooden door that is both imposing and usually left open to serve as a welcome. Goodell huddled over a speakerphone with general counsel Jeff Pash. On the other end was Jerry Jones. Adhering to the protocol of giving owners a 48-hour heads-up before a major disciplinary issue involving their team is announced, Goodell and Pash informed Jones that after a 13-month domestic violence inquiry, the Dallas Cowboys' star running back, Ezekiel Elliott, would face punishment -- a six-game suspension.
The line went quiet. Seconds passed. Goodell's decision was an unconscionable violation of trust, Jones later told associates, because he believed that the commissioner had assured him this past spring that there would be no suspension. Jones saw in Elliott a genuine opportunity, a player so good that he had made Jones believe that this year he just might win a Super Bowl for the first time since 1996. His anger was palpable. Finally, according to sources with direct knowledge of the call, Jones broke the silence. He aimed his words not only at Goodell's decision but also at his role as judge, jury and executioner in the case.
"I'm gonna come after you with everything I have," Jones said. Then he mentioned Deflategate. "If you think Bob Kraft came after you hard, Bob Kraft is a hoo-ha compared to what I'm going to do."
“The owners were also less than thrilled about the fact that Jones, they reportedly believe, whispered in the ear of Papa John's CEO John Schnatter, who would complain that NFL players taking knees during the anthem was hurting his pizza sales.”
Roger Goodell is the absolute freaking master at this game. He knows that the owners won't pass up an opportunity to put the boot in on one of their own, and he knows that as long as he has most of 31 of them in his camp he can go after pretty much any other one with impunity. So far he has done Kraft, Snyder, Blank, Benson and now Jones twice; I reckon the only ones he won't go after are Mara, Tisch and Rooney. He might think twice about taking on Allen as well, because while he doesn't have the political power he has more money than God.
I don't see any way that Jones does any better at this than Kraft or Snyder did. Just bend over and take your shafting like a good little boy, Jerry; this ain't a fight you're going to win.
lol, out of the last few years the thing you have decided is Roger Goodell is smart?
The last few years you've watched him acting as a full fledged dictator making up and enacting punishments on the spot, treating the NFL and its assorted multimillionaires as his personal fiefdom with impunity while getting them to pay him tens of millions a years for the privilege of doing so, and you've concluded that he isn't?

Yeah, because he could have done all that until whenever he wanted if he was halfway intelligent about weilding his power. He'll get this next contract, probably, but he is done after that without a doubt. Eventually, just freaking everyone raw will make everyone hate him more than they hate each other.
I think you misunderstand Goodell's role. He didn't punish Dallas and Washington for overspending in the uncapped year because he felt it was the right thing to do, he did it because Mara and Tisch and Rooney and Kraft and a bunch of other owners saw them doing it and wanted him to take away the advantage they gained.
He didn't punish Tom Brady and the Patriots for cheating because he thought they were, he did it because Mara and Tisch and Rooney and Jones and a bunch of other owners felt that Kraft was getting a bit too big for his boots, and because Jones and Snyder and Blank wanted to demonstrate that they were unhappy with him supporting their punishments.
He didn't punish Elliott for being a shithead because he felt it was the right and proper thing to do, he did it because Kraft is still pissed about the Brady suspension and wanted to get back at Jones for not supporting him through the whole thing and because Mara and Tisch and Rooney and Snyder all love putting the boot in on Jones.
All the while that these guys are playing out real life Game Of Thrones, the fans are busy pointing at Goodell as the bad guy. And you think the owners are getting sick of him? The guy is a dream employee, better than they could have possibly dared hope that anyone could be at their job. They are never, ever firing Goodell; one day he'll get sick of it and go home, because they've already made him far wealthier than any sports commissioner could ever reasonably hope or expect to become as a result of his spectacularly good performance.
I think you are misunderstanding why I think they will definitely get rid of him and it is even a question right now about his contract. If he was as great at his job as you think he is it would not even be a remote possibility it doesn't get renewed.
What I'm saying is he could have done all of those things without making the league look so utterly incompetent along the way. You know the ratings keep going down and the actual on field stuff is pretty shitty right now, right?
I'm sure Roger Goodell is a great yes man behind the scenes but there are other humans capable of being yes men without also looking incompetent.

Goodell stated recently that this will probably be his last term as commissioner. It’s been speculated as well. They have the CBA coming up in 2020 and the TV deal negotiations coming up in 2021. After that he’ll be mapping his succession plan.

The NFL incurred multimillion dollar legal costs in 2017 in fighting Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in the Zeke Elliott case and in the compensation committee's battle with Jones over Roger Goodell's contract. The other owners are now seeking reimbursement.
The decision to seek that reimbursement was made by the finance committee and other owners. The decades-old rule has been applied in the past. This one's a little different b/c of the big dollar figure and the acrimony involved in these cases.

Texas Roadhouse has the best chain restaurant bread
The breadsticks from Pizza Hut from when you were a kid were awesome
Are they different now? I haven't had Pizza Hut in about 20 years.
But they were amazing.
We're waiting to fire gase until we know Garrett is available, that's gotta be it.
It's a sad thing that I find myself wondering which I'd prefer.
This is just getting awkward, now.
It's like when you split up with your girlfriend but neither of you can afford to move out and neither of you can afford the rent on your own so you decide to both stay in the apartment like roommates until the lease is up and excrement is WEIRD for the next six weeks until you both agree that you're just going to find a way to afford to move.
What is really unsettling are all of the reports about McCarthy and Lewis being considered for the HC job. If you’re going to start looking then you should definitely fire him first.

NFL Update @MySportsUpdate
Jason Garrett is still lobbying to be the the #Cowboys HC, per @JayGlazer. He still isn’t officially out. Meanwhile, Mike McCarthy’s interview with Dallas went so well that he’s still there today.
Apparently Marvin Lewis has told Dallas that having Hue Jackson as his OC is a condition of him taking their HC job. I'm not really sure what to say about that.

Finally fired.
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
The #Cowboys have officially fired coach Jason Garrett, and Garrett has allowed them to do so, source confirms. Obvious but now done
That's like saying he allowed them to hire him.
I suspect the whole allowing them to fire him is because he's not yet technically out of contract, and they need him to be done before they can move on to hire their new guy. It still sounds damn funny though.

I get a work phone vs. a personal. But that's clearly not the case here
Jerry Jones on his new helicopter: "You can shoot out of it. You can shoot pigs out of it. You can do a lot of things in this helicopter."
On if he would go out and get a top pass rusher...
Jones: If I have a chance to bring one of these premiere pass rushers, one of these war daddies that takes two to block, if I have a chance to get a player like that - I would...it's not a question of that. It's a question of where is he? And who gives him up if he's a veteran, or where is he in the draft, or where is he anywhere? So, yeah we do need pressure. We're going to try to do something about it.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who spoke about the possibility of injured quarterback Tony Romo going on injured reserve (via the Star-Telegram) during a radio show:
“I don’t want to rule out anything. I don’t know that anybody is qualified to do that. Medicine basically gives you estimates and guidelines, and I’m not trying to be vague here, but there’s no need to rule out anything. We don’t have a situation on the 53, this isn’t an active roster day-game situation. He won’t be active, and we don’t have anybody valuable enough to take up that last spot to give us the opportunity to see how he does. There’s just not enough value there realistically to bring someone else in. That’s the deciding factor.
“You don’t have to spend a lot of time going over and kind of circumcising the mosquito. You don’t have to do that over there on him because you look back over on the other side that caused you to make the decision, and there’s nobody good enough to take that spot to give you a chance for that if he can come back.”

Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys took the floor: "Look, my daddy grew up on a farm in southwest Missouri. Every so often in the spring, the wind would come from a different part of the country, and the moon would set a different way, and the owls would start f---ing the chickens."
Nobody knew where he was going with this story.
"The owls are f---ing the chickens," Jones continued. "It makes no sense that they turned this down, but it's a great thing for us."
Jurrah making....sense?
I know it's fun to rag on Jerry Jones because he's a Texas oil billionaire who owns the most loved and most hated team in the NFL, but generally I find him to be a really good owner.I respect that he wants to win, and that he's loyal to his guys, but I would prefer an owner let the football people run the football ship. Crazy that an owner is also the GM.

Jerry Jones to @TMZ last night: “When y’all hear what sounds like, over these Los Angeles hills, when you think they got one of these mountain lions with his tail caught underneath a house, that’s me screaming into my pillow for not being in this Super Bowl.”

He is letting go fast.
Maybe he could pull a Trump and just offer to go to her birthday party once a year since that will clearly show enough support until he can appeal the appeal of the appeal's appeal.
