Sources: Free agent right-handed Garrett Richards has agreed to a two-year deal with the San Diego Padres. The guarantee is for around $15 million.
These deals are becoming more common, Eovaldi and Pineda last year

Decent deal if he can come back OK from his Tommy John surgery. The Padres have 0.5 good SPs right now so why not

BREAKING: Free agent star Manny Machado has agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres, league sources tell ESPN.
12:33 PM - 19 Feb 2019

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
people on the giants sub are saying that theres radio reports the giants have increased whatever their offer was to bryce in response to this. im ok with this.
-
Congratulations fellas.
For what its worth, I love the signing. It's a risk that a franchise like the Padres needed to take.
I reckon this means Tatis Jr. better start taking grounders at third.
-
Padres are gonna be really good within a matter of years. They have one of the more loaded farm systems in recent memory. 3 top prospects that are MLB ready in Tatis, Urias, Mejia. All depends if the pitching develops fast enough to make an impact. Paddack looks pretty damn good and should be ready soon but as far as I know Gore, Morejon, Patino are years away.
A few exciting young OFers in Manny Margot (been bad but still has potential), Franchie Cordero, Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe. Hosmer is a decent 1B. Machado. Lucchesi should be a good rotation arm. Some promising bullpen arms in Yates and Stammen.

Paddack and Allen are likely to be up this year. Lucchessi is solid but the rest of the rotation is a question mark. Maybe Richards can help next year. I'd love to trade for a true ace type though to really vaunt the team into contention this season.
Margot is pretty meh but his defense gives him a high floor at least, Franimal needs to DH as his defense is garbage, Renfroe is garbage, Cordero is intriguing but we'll see.
I think the main thing now is to try to acquire some pitching and see if we can offload Myers.
-

Word seems to be that Machado will play third, Urias short, and Kinsler second until Tatis comes up. Then it'll be Urias at second, Tatis at short, Machado at third. Not sure I'd rather have Machado at short but Padres have absolutely nothing at third besides Machado so that probably makes the most sense.

Yeah for sure. I think he'll end up there most of the time.
Padres' pitching is likely not good enough for a playoff run, but gotta like the lineup rn

Luckily in the NL you can prob roll with Bryan Mitchell as your #2 and make a deep playoff run. Better than the Brewers rotation last year

Ay Jumbo. Just finished up my dynasty baseball draft. 40 man roster, $400 salary cap.
I drafted Matt Strahm ($4), Eric Lauer ($2), and I kept Chris Paddack ($3) from last year. Can you give me a rundown on what you think about those guys and the 2018 outlook on the Padres rotation?
They’re all really cheap, for reference I’m paying Syndergaard $50, Strasburg $35, and Tanaka $21. Those guys are all overpaid, but I had no pitching at the end of last season and landed them in offseason trades for cheap since their owners weren’t going to be able to keep them.
-
Paddack looks like a stud in the making but he'll clearly be on an innings limit this year. Almost certainly under <100 IP in the majors. Could be great off the bat though if his ST performance is legit.
Lauer is likely only going to be meh at best, especially as a rookie, IMO. Not a very high ceiling type of player.
Strahm, I have no idea. FO seems to have some faith in him but not sure he'll have the longest leash
-

Ty sir. Last I saw opening day starter was between Strahm/Luchessi with the Padres prospect hive pushing paddack. I regret bidding on Lauer but $2 is a good price if he ends up being an average SP
I’m highest on paddack
-
I also have Franchy Cordero for cheap, if he plays like he did last year he’ll pay dividends
-
Opening day is probably gonna be Lucchesi I think. I would definitely be hyped for Paddack. Paddack is definitely gonna be the best from that group, think he could be a future #2 type.
I love Franchy, but not sure he'll get too much playing time this year unless we manage to move Myers. Which we desperately need to do.
-
Chris Paddack will start Monday against the Mariners, seemingly lining him up to start the third game of the regular season for the Padres on Saturday versus the Giants.
Matt Strahm is starting Tuesday, which would appear to line him up to start Sunday against the Giants. They will follow Opening Day starter Eric Lauer and Joey Lucchesi, who will get the second game. The fifth spot in the Padres' rotation remains up for grabs.
Let’s Goooo
-
“It's impressive seeing Chris Paddack's progression the farther he moves away from Tommy John. Last year in his first season back he was 90-93 and reached back for 95-96 when he needed it. Tonight he's sitting 94-95 in Seattle. Big jump in year two.”
“Chris Paddack ranged from 73.7 mph to 95.8 mph in tonight's outing. also had 12 whiffs in 49 pitches.”

Heis/Jumbo,
Any insight as to when Taylor Trammell will have a MLB spot?
Main outfield seems like it'll be Myers/Grisham/Pham. Myers has been good in the spring but who knows about his ability to hold onto a spot. There's also Naylor and Franchy Cordero around, but I doubt either of them would hold back Trammell. Rumor going around is that he could make the opening day roster, and since they did it with Tatis last year it wouldn't surprise me if they just put him on the roster to start the year, but I'd anticipate them giving him a couple of months in the minors before a call-up. Pham is the only OF who I would trust to hold on to a spot for certain, and if any injuries occur (see: Pham) Trammell's definitely in line to get some PT.

I don't have any particular feelings on any team not in the AL East, but I like SD's stadium. You can literally stand in the grass behind a gate in CF and watch a game from outside the park. I also still like Machado.
The Padres did some damage this trade deadline. If not the Yankees, I'd like to see them win it all.
-
Padres brought in a haul. Good for them. Love the Clevenger trade. As much as Trammel has impressive pedigree, it always says something when two organizations ship a guy out before he hits the majors.
-
Luis Patino, Francisco Mejia, Cole Wilcox, Blake Hunt (aka some slapdick prospects) for Blake Snell.
2021 looking bright for the Pads. Can't believe it tbh.
-
pretty solid deal for both sides
snell is only due like 38million over the next 3 years, too.
-
Classic rays move lol. Glad they didn’t get Gore
-
Padres get the best available starter on the trade market without giving up either of their best two pitching prospects IMHO.
Buyer beware when dealing with Tampa, but this return even with Mejia who I'm still very high on, seems light.
-

Patino was almost definitely second best to Gore.
Moreso surprised Preller didn't give up Campusano or Abrams as well than anything.
-
Mejia looks to be a bust so far but he had a ton of value just a year or 2 ago. The Rays usually work magic on reclamation projects.
They taught Travis D’Arnaud how to hit

Padres also just landed Yu Darvish without giving up anyone of serious value.
Prospects given up: Reginald Preciado, Owen Caissie, Yeison Santana, Ismael Mena (I have no idea who any of these people are), and Zach Davies (rip sweet prince)

The San Diego Padres have acquired outfielder Juan Soto and first baseman Josh Bell from the Washington Nationals in exchange for 1B/DH Luke Voit, shortstop CJ Abrams, outfielders Robert Hassell III and James Wood, left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, and right-handed pitcher Jarlin Susana, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J.
