Makes sense. Hoyer’s worked with a host of young QBs, and was with Jets OC Mike LaFleur in Cleveland and San Francisco.

Cool with it. I'd rather have Nick Mullens because he can actually play, but Hoyer would be fine.

I preferred Mullens too, but you're right...Hoyer fits the role nicely. Let's hope he doesn't have to play.

I'd be curious the financial difference between guys like Hoyer, Mullens and Alex Smith
-
My guess is that Smith didn't put himself through all that rehab to walk around the sideline, he's going to want to play. Hoyer is probably past that stage now.

I don't disagree, but at this point there are no "guaranteed" starting roles left. Unless he waits until a starter gets hurt in preseason he might not get a shot this year.

Hopefully Hoyer is cheap because he offers very little on the field. Then again, we are rebuilding so we aren't exactly making a deep playoff run or anything this year.

Well, we know Hoyer won't be expensive.
What he does bring is a veteran presence in the QB room, and he knows the offense (he'll mentor the kid). This should be Mark Brunell all over again.

Although they brought Brunell in a year later than they should have. In his rookie year Sanchez shared the QB room with Clemens and Ainge, both of whom were young and presumably desperate to win the job. If you take a QB this high then they're the presumptive starter barring disaster, so you'd better build the room around them a la Uncle Josh. In that context Hoyer makes more sense than Smith, much as I like Smith he would have made more sense if we had Darnold this year.

Hoyer has started at least 1 game every year since 2012. And his real first name is Axel.
