Summer baseball team holding 'Second Amendment Education Night'
There's going to be a "Second Amendment Education Night" in Battle Creek, Mich. on Friday, June 24. The event is sponsored by Freedom Firearms, who are actually calling it "Second Amendment Appreciation Night."
The Battle Creek Bombers are the host team.
Though the Second Amendment is a particularly hot button topic due to what is going on in Congress right now, a local report indicates that this event has been in the works for months. Some of the details, via fox17online.com:
"It's a celebration of responsible gun ownership and learning, if you do have a firearm, how to do it safely," said Bombers General Manager Tony Lovieno.
The event is sponsored by Freedom Firearms, and organizers say it's promoting firearms safety and education. Open carry is permitted at the game, however anybody caught drinking while carrying will be asked to leave immediately.
"There's going to be some booths underneath the bleachers set up showcasing the education portion," said Freedom Firearms co-owner Joel Fulton. "We're going to have some gun safe stuff for the kids there, basic safety stuff for kids so they know how to be safe around firearms."
No guns will be sold at the game, but trigger locks will be given away.
The Battle Creek Bombers play in the Northwoods League, which isn't affiliated at all with Major League Baseball -- or, obviously, by extension Minor League Baseball either. College baseball players continue playing in the summer once their school league has concluded and this league boasts that it has some of the top collegiate players in the Midwest.
As for attendance, it appears they actually draw (some college summer leagues don't), because the official website says that it is the first ever summer collegiate baseball league to draw one million fans in a season.

(Source) — Matt Damon will return to the big screen as trained assassin Jason Bourne later this month, and while promoting the new film in Australia over the weekend called for a ban on guns in the United States. In an interview with a reporter from the Sydney Morning Herald, Damon said: ‘You guys did it here in one fell swoop and I wish that could happen in my country, but it’s such a personal issue for people that we cannot talk about it sensibly. We just can’t.’ Damon made these comments at the red carpet premiere of the new Bourne movie, a film series in which he has killed at least 10 people with a firearm. Damon, who has reportedly made over $50million for his work in the four Bourne films, has also had no issue with using weapons in other films. The 45-year-old actor has also carried firearms in his movies The Departed, Green Zone and Elysium, to name just a few. Business Insider revealed in the wake of the massacre at Orlando gay club Pulse last month which left 49 dead and another 53 injured that of the 100 top grossing Hollywood films in 2015, 18 of them featured guns on their movie poster. Damon is pictured holding a gun on movies poster for all four of his Bourne films.

Yeah I get it. But when you make millions from movies that glorify gun violence, shut the freak up about gun control. Obviously he doesn't care enough about his so called convictions to pass up on those movies.

I’m sure insurance companies aren’t currently scrambling to find loopholes and ways to avoid paying for all of this damage being caused.

On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott declared a statewide state of disaster due to the spread of the coronavirus. This has raised many questions as to the impact on gun rights under House Bill 1177, passed by the legislature in 2019 and signed into law by the governor.
The bill lifts restrictions on the unlicensed, open carry of a handgun by Texans during times of evacuation during a state of disaster. Specifically, the bill states that Texas handgun restrictions do not apply to a person who carries a handgun while:
Evacuating from an area following the declaration of a state of disaster; or
Re-entering the area following the person’s evacuation.
The provisions only apply, however, for 168 hours following the governor’s disaster declaration unless the governor’s proclamation extends that period. It also does not apply to persons who are prohibited under state or federal law from possessing a firearm.
In short, this means that Texas will have a form of de facto constitutional carry for the next 168 hours. However, Texans should be cautious because what it means to “evacuate” or “re-enter following evacuation” is not well-defined. As a practical matter, it may be sufficient to show that the person was traveling from one place to another. Or, if accused of violating handgun laws, the person might need to show they were in the process of leaving the state entirely in order for the exception to the law to apply.
Gov. Abbott could extend the period under which HB 1177’s exception will apply, but it will ultimately be up to the courts to decide in which cases of evacuation the exception might apply.
Texans should proceed at their own legal risk. The default rule remains that carrying a handgun without a license remains a serious crime under state law.

Not sure what your point is here. Neither Biden nor Beto has, to my knowledge, argued that firearm restrictions should only be enforced on white people, nor has either of them to my knowledge endorsed large groups of people of any race marching through the streets carrying assault rifles. Why are you trying to make this an either/or situation?

You start out saying you're not sure of what my point is yet end your post defining ipso facto its construct?
Guns or no guns, period. That was the point here - totally independent of any considerations involving race. This is the same thing as those yahoos storming the 'palace gates' in Michigan. Is Biden going to install Beto as his 2nd amendment attack dog and if so, how much 'teeth' is he going to give him. My take? Joe & Beto is optics. No one's gonna do shlt after the election. That said, seeing droves of people brandishing weapons is pretty freaked up and if you insist on painting it as some exercise in either/or, I don't flip my standards on whether it's a bunch of red yahoos or black nationalists. Reckless posturing is reckless posturing.
It was 2nd amendment, period. Where does Biden or Beto bring race into the conversation and/or argument? They don't, therefore again it was not about an arbitrarily constructed "white vs, black" either/or narrative.

So what was the point of the question "which is it?" between Beto/Biden and an armed militia? They've made it abundantly clear which it is, so why are you asking?
-
Again (again), 2nd Amendment.
"Hey Uncle Joe, so you're gonna have Beto, take folk's guns & ammo, or is it just for show?" But feel free to belabor the point.

"Which is it" was a nonsensical question when you were suggesting there was a discrepancy between a tweet of an armed militia walking the streets and Biden accepting Beto's endorsement based upon his anti-firearm stance. What are you trying to say? I'm belabouring the point because you're not making one that makes any sense.

So what is it? It wasn't about accepting Beto's endorsement, it was about the recruiting of Beto to serve as gun-confiscating attack dog, i.e. so what is it?: you gonna get big, bad (goofy imho) Beto to come down off standing on a table to take their guns or not? First it was about race with you ("should only be enforced upon white people") - wrong - now you're having a problem with the 'nonsensical' nature of the question itself? This has morphed from a petulant 'holding-of-hands-to-the-fire' to obnoxious trolling. They got guns...so 'what is it?' ...you taking them?...or not? I'm not going to add the JO de rigueur "reading comprehension" swipes or 'you can't be this dense' (because you're obviously not) but at the same time your 'smartest kid in the room' tact's wearing thin. Let it go JE - not worth it. and "Butts" out sancho panza

No but white Americans have been intimidating black Americans for over a century through gun ownership. It's difficult to keep that form of intimidation going if you're running into the same level of armed force and organization.

Agreed, but again I think it's the wrong solution. I completely understand why it would be happening, it's just all balancing out in the wrong direction. I wonder what it's going to take for the US to realise how stunningly stupid your firearms laws are. Is the problem that not enough Americans are dying and you actually need a full on civil war?

One Canadian killed by gun violence is one too many. That’s why we’ve banned 1,500 types of military-style assault firearms. And that’s why, today, we’ve introduced legislation to further strengthen gun control in Canada.

Through this legislation, we’ll move forward with a national freeze on handgun ownership. In other words, it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer, or import handguns anywhere in Canada once this Bill becomes law.

In addition, we’ll make sure that people involved in acts of domestic violence or criminal harassment have their firearms licenses taken away. And we’ll make sure that those who are considered a danger to themselves or others have to surrender their firearms to authorities.

Love me some Clarence Thomas. NYS can't circumvent the 2nd amendment.
I know! I'm so excited to commute to and from work in NYC knowing any ol' dirtbag can now carry a concealed gun. It's already so much fun riding the subways and so it will be so much more exciting trying to figure out who's packing heat. So psyched!
A$$
In 90% of the cases the police are not there to protect you. They show up after the fact to investigate a crime after it happened. And with shitheads like Bragg and the bail reform project criminals already on the street en masse... plus cops no longer have immunity in NYS so they say 'why should I get involved?'
Why? Because I disagree and don't think the Second amendment covers concealed guns in one of the largest urban centers in the world that is inhabited by more people today then there were in the entire United States when the Bill of Rights was passed? Have you even read the second amendment? Here's what it says:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
Where does that guarantee people in a city of 8 million to carry concealed weapons in schools subways churches public playgrounds restaurants etc...people in our country have a right to 'keep and bear arms' not to conceal them.
Justice Thomas disagrees. The 2nd amendment is not a 2nd class right.
Carry it, just don't conceal it. Plus there needs to be some common sense applied to these decisions and what the framers meant more than 225 years ago when the largest city in America had 35,000 people. Americans no doubt have a right to carry and bear arms, but for example are wife beaters eligible to procure guns? No freaking way. So obviously there needs to be some reasonable restrictions on the right to own and carry a gun. You and I just draw that line in a different place. Doesn't make you right or wrong but it doesn't make me right or wrong--we just disagree.
The largest demographic group of new registered gun owners are women.
Wrong. It is true that almost half of new gun purchases, meaning people who are buying guns for the first time, are women. But the overwhelming majority of gun owners in the United States are men. But I have no idea what that has to do with either of our arguments. Should felons be able to purchase a gun in the United States? Riddle me that one Batman.
New gun owners Einstein. If someone has a record or a restraining order they ideally won't get a permit. That law is already on the books.
Gotta go... already 3 over after 1 at Winged Foot

Unconscionable. If this woman had in fact presented to the court in writing that the husband:
- recently bought a firearm
- stopped taking his meds
- THREATENED her and her kids (as well as her friends)
why didn't the court go beyond granting a useless Order of Protection (a mere piece of paper that this psycho would've ignored) and issue a warrant for the guy's arrest?

Was playing poker at Paris tonight in a World Series of Poker event. (the casino in Vegas, not actually Paris)
A glass broke at Park MGM, which is several casinos down and across the street, causing some chaos in those casinos.
Someone in Paris apparently was talking on the phone to someone about what happened and mentioned there was a shooter. Someone else apparently misheard that conversation and yelled about gunshots or a shooter, and all of a sudden, there was a stampede of people outside. You could hear the floor rumble like a stampede, and players in the tournament just sprinted out of the room or dove under tables. Wild scene.
We're so fearful of guns that a broken glass a quarter mile away caused widespread panic across the Vegas strip. Crazy.

Yeah but if every single one of those people were armed instead, this all could have easily been avoided.

Fascinating (and depressing) to watch Republicans and so-called conservatives and so-called Christians continue to defend the indefensible and excuse the inexcusable...it must be mentally and emotionally exhausting.
Frighteningly similar to watching members of the Jehovah's Witness cult twist their brains and consciences into knots as they defend shunning close family members, or let themselves or their children die instead of getting a blood transfusion (happens all the time, including my dead teenage cousin many years ago).

Came in here to post another article about this. Ridiculous.
"Around 12:30 p.m., another teacher went to a school administrator and told them that she searched the 6-year-old’s backpack, who at the time was rumored to have brought a gun to school.
The teacher then told the administrator that she believed the 6-year-old put the gun in his pocket before going out to recess. The administrator then downplayed the report they received from the teacher saying, “well he has little pockets.”
Toscano says shortly after 1 p.m., a third teacher told administrators that another boy was crying and told the teacher that the 6-year-old showed him the gun at recess and threatened to shoot him if he told anyone."
-
School dropped the ball on that one. Obvious question: owner of the gun wasn’t missing it?

Keith Melvin Moses, 19 has been charged with murder for one shooting and is expected to face more charges in later shootings that killed two others, according to police.
The sheriff said Moses has a lengthy criminal history that includes gun charges, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon.

The reason that this is a bad argument is because the prevalence of illegal gun ownership in the US is directly tied to the ready supply of legally manufactured guns for consumer use.
Individually, someone who really wants a gun would find the resources to get one. Having a market flooded with legal firearms makes it cost significantly fewer resources in order to obtain them.
-
One could reasonably argue that by having guns legal, you're reasonably able to track and document them. The US has some pretty extensive gun tracking and regulations.
I suppose one would need to have some serious data on how effective a deterrent a gun ban would be on actual crime. And you do have to ask, with the heavy push towards drug legalization, how eager and capable would the organizations in South America be at replacing that lost revenue with gun (and ammo?) smuggling
I don't give a excrement about guns, I'd just side with whoever has more reliable data to win their argument

Kind of my point (kind of). Yes legal guns raise the likelihood of them slipping into bad hands but at the same time the US vs. “THE REST of the freaking world” (btw, that’s actually a stretch when you consider mex/haiti/etc) ignores the fact that the cat’s already out of the bag, i.e. I feel american culture is significantly populated by ‘types’ that would shoot you just as soon as look at you, i.e. for the flimsiest of small dick syndrome reasons.
Years back there was a mass shooting in Finland involving something like 50-60 victims in a country whose social zeitgeist is significantly more chill than the increasingly rude and crude USA so as you said, if a psycho nut in a very restrictive landscape can arm himself then the valueless pieces of trash here in the US who’s oblivious to gun laws let alone taking lives in general will in fact be the one—and the only one?—with a weapon in hand.
Also, look at what’s’ illegally slipping (POURING) over the border currently. Look to include guns in the mix? Not a problem, simple a ‘business model adjustment’ on the part of scumbags who are already in the business of destroying lives by other means; the same people who are already loaded to the teeth. They’ve no problem getting guns and they’ll have no problem setting up shop here as they already have drug-wise, human trafficking-wise, etc. Ask Eric Holder how easy it is to get weapons through back channels….
I very much respect your POV Cato, I guess I’m just too jaded at what I see as constituting “the street” nowadays (i.e. the widespread easeat which people can free to to kill others for the flimsiest of reasons…)…. sorry for the ramble…

Are you talking about Norway? Ok, and how many mass shootings do they typically experience in a year?
Whoops, not ‘Suomi’ but my point was that it was the rarity of such an event was not simply tied to the availability/unavailability of weapons but to the markedly different cultural ethos that exists vis-a-vis the US….or Brazil…
e.g. (Google: Brazilian pool hall massacre): because someone merely ‘laughed’ at someone?

Fred Perry has been a popular brand with questionable groups for many years. The original skinheads wore it and when that scene splintered the fascist branch took FP with them, and it has always been part of the British football hooligan uniform which isn't a movement as such but there is a strong core of far right support amongst their ranks. Wait that can't be right, the AR-15 is just a common hunting rifle and the A stands for Armalite not Assault you dummy and banning specific types of weapon is completely stupid because people will just use knives or hammers or spoons or reams of photocopier paper to commit their mass child executions with. Why can't you just accept that God and the Founding Fathers gave everyone an inalienable right to own weapons of mass destruction and children's lives are a reasonable price to pay not to have those rights in any way, shape or form impinged upon or restricted? You are the worst kind of American.

A suspect is at large after five people, including an 8-year-old, were fatally shot in a Cleveland, Texas, home, according to San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers.
The suspect was apparently shooting a rifle in a yard and neighbors asked him to stop because a baby was trying to sleep, Capers said. The gunman then turned the weapon on his neighbors.
Authorities found the victims Friday night after receiving a harassment report about 11:30 p.m. local time, the sheriff told CNN affiliate KHOU.
Multiple people were shot around the residence, Capers said. Two women in a bedroom were found laying over two young children who survived, he added.

Amazing how it didn't come out until today that the suspected shooter was an illegal that's been deported three times.
But if we just make something illegal, it'll disappear! As the war on drugs showed.

If a private seller sold an AR-15 to an undocumented person in Texas they are under no obligation under the law to check their citizenship status.
I’m glad we were able to figure this out. I’m sure Texan Republicans are in a big rush to fix the loophole in their shitty gun laws that MJ identified

Yeah, it’s the lack of immigration control that are leading to mass shootings.

No it isn't?
This situation had literally nothing to do with constitutional carry. By the perps own status he was ineligible to own a gun legally.

The only way that would have been legally remedied is if he walked into a police station carrying the rifle.

“Telling me?” “Worthless?” On the contrary, I illustrated the fact that this (as I put it) “horrific epidemic’s” pathology was/is national in scope. Whether it’s political hyper-partisanship or an acutely assuming nature that in your mind gives you unencumbered latitude to interpret or define my post in a narrative you see fit doesn’t dispel my national-in-scope observation.
Seems more my ‘observation’ doesn’t sate a desire to politically berate, i.e. the observation[/] doesn’t fit the narrative.
Would this ‘extended in scope’ landscape constitute mass murder? One thing noteworthy is that it’s apparently not newsworthy…

Thirty eight percent of white adults view gun violence as a big problem vs. sixty percent of Hispanic adults and an overwhelming 82% of Black adults (source: Pee Center) who overwhelmingly voted for Biden. It is a ‘national epidemic’ and while gun laws vary from state to state guns as a whole are a problem coast to coast.

I did.
The gracious above invitation aside, nobody suggested ‘more guns’ as a panacea. My point was that the proliferation of guns represented (in my words) a ‘national epidemic’ which apparently flew in the face of a narrative which maintains that any threat of gun violence originates solely in the domain of squirrel-eating, sister-banging redneck inbreds; it’s a sea to shining sea problem.
So instead of guns,
maybe a few more knives will solve this?

Ok, no playing games: caught with a firearm = automatically serve a min. 5 years in prison with no possibility of an early 'good behavior' release:

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about illegal firearms?

Good, fair question. Begs another question: what constitutes an illegal handgun? Is it some guy living in the middle of nowhere 30 minutes from police assistance possessing a firearm for his family's protection, or some great white hunter type who plugs nature's wildlife for kicks? Myself, I would be perfectly fine if all guns were cxld by law but that's probably not happening so then what? Mental workup of any and all would-be firearm purchasers and creation of a database to include who, what type firearm, date of purchase, and to also include any and all purchases of 'peripherals' e.g. scopes, etc. not to mention strict limits on type, capabilities, ammo, etc.)? Myself, I legally 'played with guns' in the very, very distant past and cut my teeth at a site (https://dmna.ny.gov/campsmith/) up-county from where I grew up and currently live (10583).
Years back--true story--the Mrs. & I trekked upstate to Cortland, NY to attend a Jets training camp back in the Rex/Sanchise days (part of a "Finger Lakes Region" jaunt) and en route we stopped off at a service station/rest area place in the Binghamton/Vestal, NY area. While stretching my legs in this huge 7-11 type store I perused the magazine section and was floored to see the number of gun-zealot publications geared toward "Call to Duty" psychos along the lines of:
- https://www.allyoucanread.com/top-10-gun-magazines/
Granted, it was upstate with a very.provincial "we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto" neck of the woods vibe but still.....what a total turnoff.

Also a good question. After all, in the US of A all illegal firearms were at some point a legal firearm, it was simply the act of an individual that changed its status.
I have also on many occasions fired guns, and jolly good fun it is too. I'm far from opposed to private ownership of firearms for sport, or for hunting (I find sport hunting highly distasteful, but we can't write legislation based on what we find distasteful no matter how hard Conservatives try). So, here's my manifesto for fixing the gun problem.
1. Hunting weapons are permitted, with a basic license (a criminal background check and a firearm safety course required, but permission is granted by default with those requirements satisfied). Hunting weapons are classified as single shot or manual repeating long guns (rifles) and shotguns. Hunting weapons must be stored in the home in a locking cabinet, unloaded, with the ammunition stored in a separate cabinet with a different lock.
2. All other forms of currently legal firearms, including semi-automatic rifles and handguns, may no longer be kept in the home or carried on the person. They may be stored and used at a licensed and insured gun club with a federally inspected and governed range, where you will be welcome to visit, check out your firearms and make blasty holes in pieces of paper to your heart's content. No license is required to do this. Should an individual not wish to do this, they may surrender their firearms to the government in exchange for payment of market value (determined as the original purchase price of the firearm depreciated over a term as determined by legislation). Under no circumstances, ever, is a private individual permitted to remove a firearm from the club - they can be serviced on site, and should an individual wish their firearms to be available at a different club they can request that the club transport them. All firearm purchases must be made through the club, as must private sales.
3. Concealed carry licenses will be available on a highly controlled basis to people with a strict professional need e.g. law enforcement, security officers, bodyguards and so on. Licensees will be subject to stringent criminal and mental health checks, including interviews, on an ongoing basis, and the license shall be valid exclusively to times when the individual is fulfilling their professional duties. Home storage requirements will be the same as for hunting weapons, and subject to unannounced audits.
4. Open carry is no longer legal for anyone except cops and security guards, mainly because of this absolute bell end:

5. Anyone in possession of a firearm in breach of the above rules is considered to be a terrorist and subject to prosecution accordingly.
I realise that this is a fairly significant change in your society, but that's kinda your fault for letting it get this far. Every other developed country figured this excrement out a long time ago, and unless people think that dead children in schools are a price worth paying to indulge saviour fantasies you're going to have to rip this band-aid off.

Sounds like a national epidemic.
You keep saying this like someone here is saying the opposite. Pretty sure most people hold this view

I’ll preface this by saying I have no idea what point you’re trying to make, but sure?
The penalties for a weapon charge in Connecticut include:
Three years in prison and a fine of $500 for unlawfully carrying a gun
Three-year jail term and a $250 fine for unlawfully discharging your weapon
One-year prison sentence and $2,000 fine for carrying a gun when under the influence
Five to eight more years in prison if you are a felon with a firearm

No, you (et al) had a problem with me originally including both 'blue' and 'red' states to indicate that gun violence was coast-to-coast and a national in scope problem (thus the 'national epidemic' tag).

Mandatory incarceration--no exceptions: now what part of that 'black and white' escaped you other than the need to continue repeating the now stale "what's the point?" mantra?

I have no idea what you’re arguing against. I don’t disagree with either of those things and have never said I did.
Your list of red and blue states was almost exactly a list of the most populated states. I was pointing out red/blue was irrelevant, clearly those stats indicate it’s driven by population.
