As per schefter
The jags are hiring Idzik as a consultant

Happy to see that he landed on his feet.
-
"So John, should we sign this corner?"
"nah brah"

I guess the jags will be sitting out FA this year

Idzik's reputation must've been interpreted differently in Hong Kong.
Kinda like Hasselhoff in Germany.
-
"Hey John, how much should we give for Leonard Williams' signing bonus?"
"Trick question, cut him"
-
John, what should we do?
Does opposite.

watch the jags sign Revis

I'm actually legitimately happy that he found a new job.
Why? I can't think of a single former player, coach or exec whose future fate I give less of a excrement about.
I'm sure he'll do very well at making sure that they have exemplary flight bookings and hotels for their road games.

He actually seemed like a pretty good guy with good intentions.
He just can't run a franchise for the life of him. I'm glad he found another job.

I disagreed with how he handled the jets but it's not like he had bad intentions. He just sucked at his job. I didn't want to see the man laughed out of the NFL.

I agree. I can't say I'm upset he's gone, but I don't wish ill on him. He tried, he failed, he's gone. Best of luck to him.
He's right where he needs to be, behind a desk working with numbers.

From reddit:
So after the Mike Tannenbaum hire I'm guessing failed Jets GMs are just retiring to Florida?
It's official: Mike Maccagnan to Bucs as a "consultant" in 2016
Why wait they can get Terry Bradway right now
-
Good place for him, pretty hard to ruin the Jags.
-
Well, I'm glad the Jets didn't completely end his NFL career. He cleared a lot of cap space. However, he failed to realize that he needed to win quickly because he had a chance to be swept out the door with Rex. And that's exactly what happened.
-
freak this noise, the Jets didn't end or almost end Idzick's career. Idzick's complete incompetence at most everything GM related is what almost ended his career.

Depends on where the pleasure is coming from. When I jerk off, it's not the dick in my hand that's giving me pleasure, it's the hand. Probably the same with sucking your own dick. Unless you like the act of sucking more than being sucked by your own dick. Then you're probably gay.

The #Jaguars and QB Blake Bortles agreed on a 3-year new contract worth $54M that covers the 5th year option and two additional years, I’m told. He was under contract for 2018 at $19M.

Jags fired Coughlin
-
Did anyone read the report from the NFLPA?
They basically told pending free agents not sign with them.
It should be noted that Jaguars players continue to be at odds with Jaguars management over their rights under the CBA far more than players on other clubs, the NFLPA said. In the last two years, more than 25% of the grievances filed by players in the entire league have been filed against the Jaguars.
You as players may want to consider this when you have a chance to select your next club.

If this article is correct:
https://www.si.com/.amp-nygiants/nfl/giants/news/why-the-giants-should-use-the-transition-tag-on-leonard-williams
.....if the Jets transition tag Anderson and he ultimately doesn't sign with the Jets, they not only don't get any compensation like a franchise tagged player would, they also aren't entitled to a compensatory pick the following year like they would be if they just let him go to free agency.
If they just let him hit free agency, yes they may have to pay more overall to sign him, but they could backload the deal to make it easier to sign other players this year. Or they could just go full retard on offensive linemen and decide they don't have the cash to keep him, then possibly get a compensatory pick in 2021. Once he's transition tagged, it raises the stakes and limits flexibility.
The other issue may be that once he's transition (or franchise) tagged, his entire contract $ goes on this year's cap immediately. It would limit flexibility and decision making elsewhere in free agency.
-
Thanks Bo.
Sounds like the transition tag is mostly useless you are absolutely getting him signed and just need a few more days to work out a deal

Sounds like Lombardi wasn't too far off with his deal prediction.
For Minnesota it makes sense to give up the 2. If he walks away from you, he likely will sign a mega deal netting you a 3rd round comp pick the next year. If you think you can go all in with him right now, you do it.
That made less sense for us b cause we aren't close and if he walks we don't get the comp pick for another year, slowing our rebuild

That makes no sense to me. Why fire Caldwell now without canning Marrone too and opening the search for everything?
It makes more sense to fire GM's after the season IMO. Once the trade deadline is over, they aren't making any meaningful moves to impact the roster.
But whatever, yet another NFL employee fired before Gase.

We are the two most well positioned franchises to improve this offseason for sure.
I'll bet you the Jags spend a excrement ton of their FA money, while we spend about 2/3 of it.

Presumably because at this stage of the season the GM has next to zero impact, unlike the HC. Might as well get your GM process started now.

This. Get that process wrapped up as quickly as possible because you want the next guy making the decision on who the coach is going to be, and you want them to be able to hit the ground running in terms of starting the process on black Monday.
This gives them almost a six week window to put their horse before the cart.
I irrationally hate the Jaguars because Tony Khan is a sniveling little shitbag, so I hope they freak it up.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Doug Marrone is "likely out" as the Jaguars head coach and that former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer could be the replacement.
Marrone is likely to be a victim on Black Monday after what likely will be a 1-15 season. Despite the record, the Jaguars head coaching job is one of the best available given the Jaguars' massive cap space and first overall pick. Meyer would be an exciting hire for all involved. His offenses at Ohio State were electric, and his coaching connections are as good as anyone's. Rapoport reports Meyer is telling his network of friends and coaches that he "expects to land" in Jacksonville. If Meyer ultimately stays retired, Rapoport reports current Ohio State coach Ryan Day is a "potential target". The debate between Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State's Justin Fields would be turned up if Meyer or Day lands the job.
-
Good. I hope Fields throws for 12 TDs against Bama.
-
I'm intrigued to see if or how Meyer or Day translates to the NFL. Hell of a college system, but I've seen the suggestion from people more knowledgeable than me that the way they run a program may very well not work quite as well in the big boys' league.

The #Jaguars plan to meet with former Florida and Ohio State HC Urban Meyer today to discuss the team’s head coaching vacancy, per NFL Network. No deal is imminent. Jacksonville is then scheduled to interview #49ers DC Robert Saleh on Saturday.

Urban Meyer and the Jags met Friday night on Shad Khan’s boat in Florida, but it was not the first time the two sides have been together, per sources. There has been regular communication and interaction between the two sides.

Urban Meyer has the Jags by the sac and is just diddling with them. Won't commit, Jags can't do anything else since he seems to be their guy.
Obviously, this shows that their organization is inept and this will soon be realized by Trevor Lawrence, who will then hold out for the Salad-led Jets.

Adam Gase could script the first drive of the game as good as any HC in the league.

How do you think people have been getting jobs during the pandemic? Even before the pandemic, Zoom/Skype interviews were quite prevalent.
Usually the 2nd interview involves person-to-person interaction....but it still isn't a requirement.
This isn't anything new.
-

True but there's a difference between hiring an entry level person with little to no o obligation, vs a 3 year commitment with 10s of millions of dollars for a guy who will probably have more of an impact on the future of your franchise than any other person.
I get it pandemic and stuff. Honestly at this point as long as Joe Douglas makes the decision, I really shouldn't care if he interviews candidates by freaking carrier pigeon.
I think I'm just bitching because I'd rather have someone like Daboll

I do seven figure deals over video calls without ever meeting the customer in person, and have done for a while. I'm curious what you think can be scripted over a video call that can't be in person, or how a collab session makes it more difficult to assess someone's personality, aptitude or demeanour than meeting in person.
I think there's actually a decent argument that the coming offseason is going to be conducted extensively over video and collab links, and that a candidate's ability to clearly express personality, ideas and process via the medium is going to be very important to recruitment and coaching.
-
I'm curious what you think can be scripted over a video call
Joe Douglas sent all candidates his questions to study before he interviewed them so they could practice with their moms
-
Why?
Because it's blatantly obvious that offense means way more in the NFL than defense. That plus you have a guy with a recent track record of turning around a young struggling QB, who spent most of his career under Belichick and Saban, has been a part of and won numerous championship games.
Sure BB disciples fail all the time, he's no sure thing. But most HCs fail im general.
I'd rather go with the guy with imo the higher upside, pedigree, and offensive background
-

How does Brian Daboll have higher upside than Robert Saleh?

I agree that offense matters more than defense for a successful franchise, but coaches can come in all shapes, sizes and backgrounds. As long as Saleh understands how important it is to score points and empowers his OC, I'm fine with hiring a defensive coach.
I'm sure JD and others have been doing background for longer than just this week. They interviewed a ton of guys. He probably had a great connection with Saleh. Bring him in person to make sure that he's the same person in person as he is on Zoom. Close the deal.
-

I'd rather not get conned by another Adam Gase who can do a mean interview reading off a script from home.
Sure he had a good idea
But I think he should at least wait for this weekends games to see who else is available after Sunday
If Douglas felt Saleh was the guy, then making him the first in person interview makes tons of sense. Give him every opportunity to seal the deal, if he fucks up in person then you pivot to the other candidates you have. If he comes in and continues to knock it out of the park and is the guy you thought he was on zoom, then make your move.
And chances are pretty good none of the candidates we interviewed are done this weekend.
Chiefs (Bienemy) should stomp the Browns
Bills (Daboll) are favorites over the Ravens
Saints (Glenn) are 2-0 vs. the Bucs this year
Is there anyone else in our candidate pool still competing this weekend?
If Saleh was our top guy out of round 1, and kicks derriere at the second interview, then he should be the guy. If they have doubts after 2 days of interviews, then by all means be patient and play the field but my guess is they don't and they won't and Saleh will be announced as the guy by noon tomorrow.

How does Brian Daboll have higher upside than Robert Saleh?
Upside is a complete bullshit word on my part
But in today's nfl defense doesn't mean excrement
Look at the top 5 defenses.
Rams Ravens Steelers Washington Saints.
Only one of those teams doesn't suck, and that's because they have a hof QB with elite offensive weapons around him.
Meanwhile the top 6 offenses are all legit SB contenders

building a good rapport/connection with your interviewer is much harder on zoom than it is in person
if saleh was able to make a great first impression with JD via their zoom interview to the point that it led to interview #2, then that is a positive for him, not a negative against him
-
I'm not repeating the outdated "defense wins championships" platitude but I'm just saying it's not cut and dry one way or another.

I'm sure Meyer knows Fields better than any coach in the NFL. Ryan Day also runs a variation of Meyer's offense, so a lot of the same terminology and concepts are there.
It'd be the easiest transition for Fields. Lawrence is the best QB by far and that's who Meyer will take.

Jags hire Trent Baalke as GM.
-
Jaguars hired ex-Seahawks OC Brian Schottenheimer as pass-game coordinator.
Schottenheimer will work alongside new coach Urban Meyer and OC Darrell Bevell after he was fired from the Seahawks last month following Seattle's sputtering end to the season. Schottenheimer's Seattle offenses were so scared to pass the ball, so "pass-game coordinator" is a curious title for him in his new city. But the title probably doesn't mean a whole lot. After spending six years as the Jets' OC, this will be Schottenheimer's fifth job over the last 10 seasons.
Sure to get the most out of TLaw.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent QB Tim Tebow has converted to tight end and worked out for the Jaguars.
It is 33-year-old Tebow's latest flight of fancy after he spent four years in the New York Mets' minor league system, for some reason. Signing with the Jaguars would reunite Tebow with Urban Meyer, of course, but it has been six years since he played as much as a padless offseason rep. For years, people inside the league suggested that Tebow switch to tight end, but the former Heisman Trophy winner and first-round pick also resisted the move. Now it is quite simply too late. If Tebow gets a spot on the Jags' 90-man roster, it will be nearly impossible to convert it into a 53-man spot.
Nice job doofus, if you had actually done that ten years ago you might have had a career.

We don't need to have 3 QBs on the active roster.
No one is going to sign Josh Johnson if we cut him.

ProFootballTalk reports the NFLPA has opened an investigation into the Jaguars over coach Urban Meyer's comments on the vaccination status of players.
PFT did not clarify the exact nature of the investigation but it can be added to the long list of controversies that have plagued Meyer's initial months in Jacksonville. Meyer admitted that the Jaguars' decision-makers considered a player's vaccination status when choosing who to cut to reach their final roster. This makes sense from a strategic standpoint. Players who aren't vaccinated are more likely to miss time and run the risk of taking other players out with them. However, the collective bargaining agreement prohibits teams from using vaccination status as a factor in employment decisions. Given how forthcoming Meyer was with this information, he stands little chance of getting out of this mess without some form of punishment.

I just think he’s used to being able to say whatever he wants without repercussion. When he was at his last few stops, he would be protected by boosters admin and the ncaa would turn a blind eye.
Now the league won’t be trying to protect him in any way.
I’m just curious what type of punishment is warranted if they deem the Jags guilty. Obviously they can’t force him to cut anyone to take back guys who were removed. Financial penalties? Draft pick removal? It will be interesting to see

I would be stunned if its anything but.
The league has made their position fairly clear on this-they want everyone vaccinated. How do you punish someone in the NFL without really punishing them?
A 50k fine for example is a drop in the bucket for someone making 12 million a year.

Trade! The #Panthers are closing in on a trade for CB CJ Henderson, sources say.
The details: CAR TE Dan Arnold and a third-round pick to the #Jaguars for the former Jax first-round pick Henderson and a fifth-rounder. Immediate help in Carolina, while Henderson starts new.

That seems a bit odd, I thought they really liked Arnold in Carolina?
Edit: apparently Tremble is better and Arnold can't block.

Apparently Henderson may have some off field issues.
As to what they're doing, at a guess they're willing to sacrifice defensive pieces in order to get as many options as possible to help out their rookie QB, on the basis that it's better to lose games because your defense can't hold as long as the offense shows signs of improving, versus losing them with a good defense that gets stops that the offense can't convert.
Doesn't sound all that stupid to me.

The Jags lost their starting TE to injury (O'Shaunghnessy...spelling?) ....so i think this was done out of necessity for both teams. I still think Carolina won this trade if Rhule can get Henderson to fall in line.
-
They had been shopping Henderson since camp. I posted here in the offseason that given our CB situation, he would be a guy to take a look at, but our CBs have been better than expected.

I've never questioned this franchise in the entirety of its existence.
But we seriously hired Urban Meyer over Robert Saleh...
Urban is 0-4, hanging out at bars, and Saleh just wrapped up an overtime win and is already prepping for his next game.
Done with this team.

I know the Raiders loved Zay Jones last year. And I thought Kirk was a top-2 receiver on the market. But that's still an absurd amount of money to spend on a below average WR corps.
I respect that the Jaguars are doing everything they can to help out their young QB, but it seems more like Baalke trying to keep his job than actually bringing in players on deals that help you win.

I don't get what they're doing.
Lawrence was great at Clemson with tall, vertical threats at receiver. I thought they'd go after MVS or Robinson.
No, they signed a bunch of slot receivers and overpaid for them big time.

Depends how you feel about Jawaan Taylor. He was a second round pick so they don't have a fifth year option on him, which means this is his last year. I think I'd probably stick with him but I know some people don't particularly rate him.

I mean, it makes Walker or Hutch slightly more likely now that they definitely aren't tagging-and-trading Cam. They were likely going Walker anyway.
