Daryl Williams, starting RT for the Panthers probably tore something important in his knee and will be out for the season I'm sure.
The reason I bring this up is that he was likely due for a big contract this coming offseason because he's been really good. This is exactly the type of player Duff would go after next year if the Panthers decide to bail on signing him because of the injury. He'll be 26 years old in August, has played well and will be coming off injury (but will have had a whole year to recover). That's a Duff special if I've ever seen it.
-
Also, Cam Newton is gonna die this year.
-
#Panthers CB Ross Cockrell reportedly suffered a gruesome leg injury, per media there.
Supposedly could *hear* a bone break after collision with Torrey Smith. Yikes.

The Panthers stunk it up down the stretch...but at least they got a few wins from an unknown backup QB.
That's more than what our douchebag HC is capable of doing.

The last 3 times Cam Newton played 16 games, the team went 12-4, 15-1, and 11-5.

So how many millions did Macc unwittingly make Rhule by not allowing him to pick Sean Ryan as his OC? I mean seriously.
Rhule went from turning down the Jets because he couldn't pick his coaching staff to getting carte blanche and paid like he's already won a super bowl.

Luke Kuechly retires???!!?!?!!!????
We are seeing quite a few greats hang them up early due to injuries.
Wonder if he had made this decision before the new coach was announced and if any one could have convinced him to continue.
Can’t blame him though, he’s made a lot of money, competed in a super bowl, and sees the reset button being pushed. Meaning he is at least a few years from competing for a title again, assuming everything goes well.
-
Panthers just hired Joe Brady from LSU as OC.
he won the assistant of the year this year, and is headed to the nfl as an oc in his 5th year as a coach.
-
I don't know his finances, but considering he's well into his second contract, I think it's a matter of wanting to be able to live the rest of his life pain free while still never having to work, or for that matter even touch his principal if he's invested wisely for the rest of his life.
No one wants to end up like Earl Campbell or God forbid, Junior Seau.
-
I don't blame the Johnson's
If Matt Rhule wanted to hire a first time OC at any level and a DC who has never coached in the pros I wouldn't be okay with it either. Even if that OC is Brady, that is way too much inexperience at the pro-level to be successful.
I fully expect Joe Judge to be more successful than Rhule at this point.

What is the last RB major extension that has worked for the team? It’s been a long time since that happened.
I love watching him, so I hope he kills the game for a long time in the NFC
-
My larger point is, this extension is a win now move. Yet most of their other moves are “we are rebuilding” and will be looking for our next franchise QB in the next 2 drafts.
They need to make up their minds

How is signing a 23 year old running back who is coming off his rookie contract as the best or very close to being the best in the league to a new deal a "win now move"?
-

I agree. Just reminding about how they previously signed 2 RB to big deals at the same time.
-

McCaffery already has an awfully large amount of miles on his legs between college and the pros. To expect him to produce at the level he has for the next 4 years, is expecting a lot. In addition, they don't have a franchise QB on the roster now, which means they need to get one. Even if they get that guy in next year's class, that means McCaffery has 2-3 years left of elite production for that guy to grow with. Which means you are essentially expecting that in year 2 of that QB's career, you are going for it all. Given that you just traded away Trai Turner, one of the best young OL in the game (supposedly because you didn't want to pay him) I don't see how those moves go together.
When you also consider McCaffery was your best asset (after trading Turner for an older/aging veteran and not draft picks), something that could be traded to acquire tangible assets that would allow you to get the QB. By keeping him, you are saying they can find the guy anyways, which is possible, but as we have seen, it's really really hard to tank/suck in this league. Miami did the best impression of it on purpose I have ever seen, and then they still won 5 games and are picking 5th. You need to make sure you have assets to either go up and get "the guy" or if you do go out and "earn" the top pick, you can use those assets to help that guy grow early in their careers.
So maybe signing a mega deal for McCaffery isn't really "win now" but it certainly can be seen as a mistake in trying to win the long game.

McCaffrey is a RB that can't stay healthy making $16M a year. Of course they want to trade him.
He's 25 years old and in his last two full seasons he put up nearly 4500 yards of offense. If he's able to get healthy again then you don't trade someone like that, if he isn't then he's untradeable.

He turns 26 in the offseason and most running backs don't get healthy and stay that way after missing the majority of consecutive seasons due to injury.

The Panthers know McCaffrey's medicals better than anyone. No one in their right mind trades for that contract.

This is the Le'Veon Bell argument all over again. It's never worth it to spend that much on a running back. It's better for your young quarterback and the team as a whole to invest those resources in the o-line, receiving corps, or defense.

We don't need a great RB in this system if it works right. Spending high picks and a lot of cap space on McCaffrey isn't worth it for us.
I am open to trading picks for a veteran, but at WR, EDGE, or CB most likely. Or maybe a mid-late pick for a lesser RB.
-
yes please, let's use a 3rd-4th rd pick on a RB
-
I don't think there's any sensible argument for us having interest in McCaffrey. We do need another back but we need a complementary back for Carter, which means probably a north-south thumper who can run some of the heavier plays.

The #Panthers are expected to hire former #Giants HC and ex-#Packers OC Ben McAdoo as their offensive coordinator, sources say. They need to work out the contract, but there aren’t expected to be issues. McAdoo is back as an OC, where he initially rose to prominence.

It’s amazing how fast things can flip. Year one Joe Brady is getting future HC interviews year two Rule fires him mid season to save his job. Year three Rhule is fired five games into the season while having traded for two former top 3 pick QBs to try and save himself.
Should have done the Ditka for Mims in August….

You said it. One year ago the Jets lost to Sam & the Panthers and lost Becton to IR courtesy of Greg Van Roten.
This year Panthers are to QBs what the Jets are to OTs.
Darnold, high ankle sprain - out
Mayfield, high ankle sprain - out
Matt Corral, lisfranc - out for 2022
PJ Walker (sounds like a brand of scotch) a former XFL refugee is now at QB with Jacob Eason as backup, Steve Wilks is the interim HC and who just a year ago was a Mizzou coordinator after getting fired from Arizona off a 3-13 season. Sounds like tank for Bryce Young/CJ Stroud and that letting Robbie Anderson walk for 2 yrs/20m was a good thing after all.

Agreed, I was pitching o/b/o McCaffrey himself whom I'd like to see in a better situation, e.g. the LAR (Cam Akers appears to be history) whose offense needs a 'more diversified' jump start.

It doesn't even make financial sense for the Panthers, they'd save just over $1M by trading him. So yeah, it's really only a case of rewarding a loyal soldier with the chance to chase a ring elsewhere if they do trade him.

Well, Baker started off his career pretty well and he's still young. It made sense to start him over Darnold and Walker at the beginning of the year. But he's been terrible this season, and he was bad last season.

Panthers DE Henry Anderson said he suffered a minor stroke.
Anderson has been out since Week 6 because of the medical condition. He was placed on the reserve/NFI list but the team did not disclose the specifics of his absence. Luckily for Anderson, the stroke was considered minor. After extensive testing, he has been medically cleared to return. The Panthers have since designated him to return from the NFI list.

That’s a ton. Obviously we won’t “know” who it’s for until draft day… Anthony Richardson had the mega combine performance. But can you give up that much for a guy who shouldn’t play until 2025?
Could you give all that up for a midget in Bryce Young?

Apparently McCown is a big fan of Stroud. I dunno, I've given up trying to figure out which QBs are going to be great in the NFL. I thought Burrow was overhyped coming out of school and now he's about my favourite player in the league.

I'm starting to gravitate more towards getting guys with elite physical skillsets. I have no idea if the rest of people's games will translate, but size, arm strength and athleticism will.
That's why I was on board with Richardson at 13. Not so much at a trade up into the top 5.
