Mets sign Betances
-
Really good signing by the Mets. I'm a big fan of Betances and wanted the Yankees to bring him back.

I agree. I’m a little shocked the Mets actually signed him.
-
One year deal for Betances. He’ll be rehabbing for half of it. Then return to form in September when the Mets are already eliminated. Then signed by the Yankees next offseason. Cash is having him rehab on the Mets dime #CashGod

Troll
-
Apparently the Wilpons and Brodie never had the good sense to ask Beltran about the Astros' sign-stealing allegations after the reports came out in November. That's damnable yet entirely unsurprising.
-
It's just like the Wilpons to succumb to public pressure once the dirt is public but not to take any action before. You'd think they'd consider Beltran a kindred spirit given their history.
-
I hope they hire Eduardo Perez instead of going back to Terry.
-
Steve Cohen can't get here fast enough
-
Statement from #Mets ownership on reports that Steve Cohen is backing out of deal to purchase majority stake in club: “The parties are subject to confidentiality obligations, including a mutual non-disclosure agreement, and therefore cannot comment.”
Usually I would troll here but I feel kinda bad for putting AR’s comeback on hold

i'm full of bullshit and i say stuff like this all the time, but i've really reached the tipping point with some of the teams that i follow. it's been too much for too long, without much in return. i am just about done with the knicks. it's all just BS rumors right now but if the wilpons are still going to be here for the foreseeable future and cohen is actually backing out, no more of my thoughts, let alone my time or resources, will be going to the mets

It's unbelievable how I can look at the Johnson's and their inability to run a franchise, then look across the rest of the New York ownership landscape, see Dolan and Wilpon, shrug and go, "well it could be worse."
HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!?!
I'm so appreciative of the Steinbrenner's its not even funny.

Sale to Cohen is DOA. Shame.

Heyman reporting that the team will still be sold and that Cohen won't be given the chance to buy any other team.
great to see the wilpons getting protected by the commissioner once again when it was obviously foul excrement from their end that made the deal fall through. they are at the point where they know their legacy as met owners will be nothing but trash once they're gone, but they want cohen to come in with his money and his teams to right the ship while they still hold 'title' as owners to try to bask in any fvcking glory that would come to the team with their hands off of it. not to mention trying to milk more out of SNY than what had been originally proposed
i am fvcking done. the mlb can screw themselves for how they've protected the wilpons over the past 10 years despite all of the heinous excrement they're doing
they fvcking removed the mccourts because of a fvcking civil dispute between husband and wife, and that move only allowed the dodgers to return to being one of the consistent powerhouses in the NL. the wilpons have made a living off of dicking down met fans for all they have without anything in return, and selig/manfred give them pats on the back. freak you, freak off
-
Not to defend the Wilpons, but this is the second time a deal Cohen was involved in to buy a team has fallen through. And MLB will not give him another chance to buy one?
Maybe the Wilpons aren't at fault here? Again, not to defend them, and yet again I feel bad for Mets fans, but something doesn't sound right.

Considering there's an NDA in play, I'm taking everything I'm reading about this with a massive heap of salt.
I'm seeing two different narratives coming out. One is that Cohen was trying to change financial terms at the last minute, the second is that Fredo (Jeff) Wilpon was pushing daddy to ensure that they'd retain operational control for five years post-sale (which is ludicrous but something that apparently was going to happen) AND wanted it mandated that he be given a "senior adviser" role post-sale and still have a meaningful role with the club.
Given the fact that one is frequently accused of insider trading and the other has the worst reputation among baseball executives and owners since Jeffrey Lurie sold the Marlins, its entirely possible both things are true.
-
Jed Lowrie showed up to ST wearing a leg brace that goes from hip to ankle then refused to answer questions regarding his knee injury

Approached by reporters, Yoenis Cespedes declined an interview request.
“Not today, not tomorrow, not at all this year,” he said.
He didn’t say why, but did say he might want to talk to his fans.
Then he spritzed some cologne on his uniform pullover and headed outside.

-
the wilpons are definitely at fault for the deal falling through. they've had a history with reneging on verbal agreements and/or making unreasonable demands in the past when a deal with a potential buyer in 2011 fell through over excrement like this
a piece of excrement like manfred befriending/backing you is already a checkmark against you
jeff wilpon, who is a historic piece of excrement and has done nothing to justify ever being involved in any sort of professional baseball organization in a decision-making capacity whatsoever, not only told cohen he wanted the 'transitional' process to last > 5 years, he STILL wanted to be the annointed 'control person' for the Mets to the MLB (every team has one person annointed to this role) even after cohen bought out and owned 80% of the fvcking team.
they are completely at fault here. i am waiting for the day the fvcking wilpons and this fvckhead van waganenen get the fvck out of here. what's going to happen is that nobody's going to offer as much as cohen did, so he's going to end up coming back in and getting what he wants. i don't know how fvcking long that process is going to take
-
jeff wilpon, who is a historic piece of excrement
Quoted just to give this line some shine
-
Both parties can be completed POSs in this, which is likely the case since Cohen is no longer allowed to make a purchase bid for any team in MLB and the Wilpons are exactly who they’ve been their entire time as owners.
-
My take is Cohen rushed to buy the team and then realized how stupid it was to own something and not have operational control. He's a billionaire and extremely smart and stopped and thought, "what the freak am I doing?" especially considering the cheap idiots he says dealing with. The Wilpons told him to freak himself or wanted more money to amend the terms and that's where it broke down.
Either way they all look retarded.
-
Either way they all look retarded.
This is the overall moral of the story.
-
Mets have a good rotation and a good lineup. I think they’ll compete this year.
Their biggest weakness is probably lack of positional flexibility and defense. They don’t have a real CF, not strong up the middle defensively, and they have too many corner OF/IF types. That shouldn’t matter that much if they pitch and hit well.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28948489/mets-noah-syndergaard-expected-undergo-tommy-john-surgery
New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery this week, the team announced Tuesday.
Dr. David Altchek will perform the surgery Thursday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, according to the Mets.
"After experiencing discomfort in his elbow before Spring Training was suspended due to the pandemic, Noah and our health and performance department have been in constant contact," Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said in a statement. "Based on the persistence of his symptoms, Noah underwent a physical examination and MRI that revealed the ligament tear. A second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache confirmed the diagnosis and the recommendation for surgery.
"Noah is an incredibly hard worker and a tremendous talent. While this is unfortunate, we have no doubt that Noah will be able to return to full strength and continue to be an integral part of our Championship pursuits in the future."
Syndergaard, 27, who is one of the hardest-throwing starting pitchers in baseball history and has among the best arsenals of pitches in the game, was expected to anchor the Mets' rotation alongside ace Jacob deGrom.
Syndergaard threw a career-high 197⅔ innings last season, and while his ERA was a career-worst 4.28, his combination of health and stuff foretold good things.
The health end did not hold up, and Syndergaard will be sidelined until at earliest April 2021 -- and more likely until the early summer. He is the second high-profile pitcher to need Tommy John surgery in recent days, with Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale confirming he would undergo the elbow reconstruction surgery.
Syndergaard, acquired by the Mets in 2012 when they traded Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to Toronto, was an instant phenom. His fastball consistently hit 100 mph, he ripped off sliders as fast as 93 mph, and he struck out 166 in 150 innings as a 22-year-old rookie in 2015. His best year came in 2016, when he was an All-Star and posted a 2.60 ERA in 183⅔ innings.
Injuries wiped out most of Syndergaard's 2017 season and shortened his 2018. He planned to join deGrom and Marcus Stroman atop the Mets' rotation, with Steven Matz, Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha filling out the last two spots.
With baseball sidelined until at least May because of the coronavirus outbreak, the Mets now won't have to choose among the final three for a rotation spot. Their prospects for 2020, which were bright during a strong spring, grow that much more difficult in a National League East with defending World Series champion Washington, defending division winner Atlanta and a Philadelphia team with playoff aspirations.
-
Wow, awful.
But I said this previously about Severino and Sale. If you're ever gonna need TJ, this would be the year to have it.

Mets starter Marcus Stroman has opted out of the 2020 season. He has accrued enough service time to reach free agency this winter. He'll do so not having thrown a big league pitch this year.
-
In the end, the Mets traded Anthony Kay, who's already a serviceable major league pitcher, and Simeon Woods-Richardson, who scouts really like and think can be a good major league starter, for 11 games of Marcus Stroman on what wound up being a third-place team.

Keep Pete and buy FAs
-
I think they could get Lindor without dealing Dom or Pete. It seems like the Indians will be giving him away and a lot of team have indicated they aren’t willing to spend
Lol at the guy saying he would trade Alonso because of his subpar defense. 1B is the least important defensive position on the field and there’s a DH coming next year. That said, Dom Smith is great defensively and an excellent hitter with a ceiling that may not have been reached yet.
If I’m the Mets I’m looking to trade from the JD Davis/Nimmo/Amed Rosario pool of players. Maybe give up a plus but replaceable pitcher like Julio Lugo. Deal some prospects since Cohen can replace those guys with high priced FA’s or investments into the IFA market
-
Yeah, dealing Dom or Pete would just keep this team chasing it’s own tail instead of improving.

New York Mets general manager Jared Porter sent explicit, unsolicited texts and images to a female reporter in 2016, culminating with a picture of an erect, naked penis, according to a copy of the text history obtained by ESPN.
The woman, a foreign correspondent who had moved to the United States to cover Major League Baseball, said at one point she ignored more than 60 messages from Porter before he sent the final lewd photo. The text relationship started casually before Porter, then the Chicago Cubs director of professional scouting, began complimenting her appearance, inviting her to meet him in various cities and asking why she was ignoring him. And the texts show she had stopped responding to Porter after he sent a photo of pants featuring a bulge in the groin area.
Porter continued texting her anyway, sending dozens of messages despite the lack of a response. On Aug. 11, 2016, a day after asking her to meet him at a hotel in Los Angeles, Porter sent the woman 17 pictures. The first 15 photos were of the hotel and its restaurants. The 16th was the same as an earlier photo of the bulge in the pants. The 17th was of a bare penis.

It is just the Mets luck that they’re catching the brunt of this for something that was years ago that he did with another organization. Prob still a creep though.

We do not condone this behavior and are extremely troubled by the details that have been reported. We were obviously not aware of these allegations from 2016 and there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that will be a home run. And that makes it a 4-0 ballgame.

Part of redemption involves you actually facing consequences. I’m struggling to decide what percent is trying to convince people to ignore that vs. the percent that is honestly stupid enough to not understand it.

The Mets will receive RHPs Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and Josh Winckowski from the Blue Jays in the Matz deal, per source.
Diaz is the Blue Jays’ No. 26 prospect, per @MLBPipeline, while Winckowski is No. 27.
The Matz trade doesn’t mean that Trevor Bauer will definitely be signing with the Mets, but it certainly opens the door wider. Mets now have an additional $5.2 million of payroll space, not to mention a vacancy in the rotation.
-
Sean Reid-Foley's control stinks...

Mets were fortunate to get anything for him considering he was almost non-tendered a month ago and their only real intent was to get him off their payroll.

Because he deactivated and reactivated his account. Once someone reactivates their account, the checkmark doesn't automatically come back. He was verified before.

What a total farce.
If I were Donnie Baseball, the next time Conforto steps up to the dish he's getting a fastball right between the numbers from whoever's on the mound.
-
uhh, that's not a conforto thing. a lot of players in the mlb try to eliminate the strike zone and may try to game 'averting HBPs' to try to get on base. they even had the replay to get the call right. that's an umpiring issue and a rule issue

Crowding the plate or leaning out over it are not the same as deliberately extending your elbow into the pitch. In the strike zone.

-
Before anyone accuses me of cherrypicking or drawing false equivalences, one of the distinct pleasures of watching far too many Mets/Marlins games over the years was getting to watch Derek Dietrich deliberately lean into pitches (whether they were inside of the strike zone or not). I was only meaning to point out the irony of this happening to the Marlins.
-
Just take the W and admit he fucked around to get it. Then we can forget about the super cheap play and move on.
-
our 'leaning in and getting hit' view is conforto's or a gillion other players' 'i was actually posturing my body away from that pitch and it hit me' cop out
again, it happens all the time. there are a lot of things broken with the game but this easily doesn't have to be one of them. enforce the rule better/make the calls right. that not being a reviewable/changeable call again leads to this being a systems issue
-
Ok. I’ll say this. I’ve never seen a scenario where a player did it with the bases loaded in a tie game in the bottom of the 9th or extra innings. Conforto knew full well what he was doing. Dietrich did it in non competitive Marlins games they were probably losing by 7 runs to pump his stats because he can’t hit. I’m not morally outraged or anything but it was the wrong call, the Mets broadcast nailed it, the umpire admitted he fucked up the call, so that’s why I don’t get what other angle there really is to talk about here.
-
IMO the Mets should be allowed to cheat a little, as a treat
-
He cheated. It worked. Oh well.

i was going to say in my previous post i don't think we're really arguing anything, i'm in agreement with all of this here. i think my posts were more directed at sentiments that conforto should be targeted for doing what he did. he literally did something many other players try all the time and is something that unfortunately many get away with, and the game needs to work on enforcing the rules in that situation better and actually allowing it be reviewable/changeable call.
he's not going out of his way to sneakily do something behind everybody's back to ruin the game. he didnt 'pull a fast one', he did something in front of us that everybody saw to try and win a game. we all saw it, it should have been overturned, and we have to fix the reasons why it wasn't overturned, and the umps not being able to overturn/overrule that call is dumb.
-

It's an umpiring issue and a rule issue agreed.
It's also a situation where this can be eliminated really easily by players policing themselves.
Anyway, on another topic, who got less support out of a relationship, Demetrius Bell and his mailman absentee deadbeat father, or De Grom and the Mets offense.
-
Real talk, does the rest of the Mets roster freaking hate degrom or something?
-
Real talk, does the rest of the Mets roster freaking hate degrom or something?
There's no other explanation.
-
I def don’t agree with throwing at Conforto for that. Wouldn’t have been surprised if it had happened though
I actually give him a sliver of credit here for being honest and self aware enough to admit how lost he’s been at the plate. He wasn’t putting that ball in play, he saw an opportunity and he took it.
If I’m a Mets fan all I care about is the W. They were prob gonna win that game eventually anyways

Besides MLB's anemic overall batting average the HBP level is at a high not seen since the late 1880's. Seems teams recruit some pitchers (esp. relievers) who throw near 100 mph but haven't learned the 'art' of pitching let alone the art of responsibly pitching inside.
edit: speaking of HBP that White Sox guy getting hit because a position player pitching during a blowout got tagged for a home run was bush league (read: Tony LaRussa).

EDIT: And now there's audio unearthed of Trevor Plouffe both echo'ing Alonso's theory, AND saying he also believes it's a gambit by MLB to manufacture dissent within the Players Association re: resentment between pitchers and hitters,

At this point, who cares? Baseball has become unwatchable and every new rule they come up with makes it even worse.
The doc is killing me, because I forget how much I loved baseball as a kid and how much I’m just indifferent to it now. Baseball was my favorite sport for a long time. Not even close. Now, I’d rather watch anything else. Office re-runs I’ve watched 20 times each at least.
How Rojas got the job, and how he’s kept it this long, is a mystery. I follow along sometimes on Twitter and sometimes watch his pressers and there’s an insult to anyone who’s listening. Makes me feel like Wilpon might as well still own the club.
