First off, thanks for the access man!
As someone who doesn't know excrement about the inner workings of plex beyond being able to login to it, how do you get all these movies/shows? Pretty awesome.

I have three servers that I run. One that actually hosts Plex and two that run Radarr and Sonarr respectively.
Radarr will search for movies & Sonarr searches for TV shows. They use NZBs, which are old usenet files from early internet days. You add the movie or show and it'll search the hosts I subscribe to on a regular interval. It's a paid subscription but still way cheaper than cable.
I have two NAS servers that add up to around 34TB of storage. I started doing this for myself years ago, then started sharing with family and friends. I would do this regardless so figured I'd share it with you assholes, I've had known some of you longer than I've had kids....

Do you not have concerns about bandwidth? I have a couple of external invitees on mine and AFAIK there are no problems, but I wonder how much it uses once you start adding a few given I'm assuming people mostly watch movies at similar times.

I haven't had any issues with bandwidth. I give Plex priority on the network and fiber to the house.
I think ten concurrent streams is the most I've hit. I worry more about the VM processor choking than bandwidth.

This movie is gorgeous, an obvious labor of love, and horrifically boring.
Definitely needs to be seen just for the photography and costume design alone.

I do add the ability to download excrement for offline viewing and autoapprove requests made thru kingstevecinemas.com to any patrons. But again, it's not big deal and I will never pressure you.
Thanks!

How about Battle Royale? I've somehow never seen it despite knowing about it for 20 years.

Two movies look pretty intriguing to me: “Don’t Look Now” from ‘73 and “Possession” from ‘81.

I've heard great things about Don't Look Now but haven't watched it. Probably will give it a shot too.
Possession looks really good too. Thanks for the suggestions, always like to diversify the library.
-
Don't Look Now is regularly listed in the pantheon of greatest and most important horror movies in history, in the same group with classics like The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby and The Wicker Man. I watched it many years ago and found it laughably awful, with one of the most stupid endings I have ever seen.
I need to watch it again.

I remember someone absolutely raving about it, watched the trailer and thought this looks dreadfully boring. I think I read about it on "greatest horror" movies list. I'll give it a go.

Ari Aster said it was an influencing movie for him so that’s recommendation enough for me.

I watched Black Christmas this December because of how many slasher films cite it as an influence. I absolutely see the germs of slasher tropes but it's not a particularly interesting movie.

And FTR, I think that most of those horror classics - the ones I mentioned as well as The Omen, Psycho and so on - are generally brilliant, so this isn't me just hating on the era or genre. I was just utterly confused as to what it was trying to do, and then when I was waiting for the big payoff... well, you'll see.

A lot of influential works are not as good as what they influenced.

Ok no spoilers.
The main thing I took away from this movie is that Julie Christie was gorgeous back then. Other than that, I have to side with Mr. English over the glowing reviews on IMDb. It’s extremely slow paced, and that usually doesn’t bother me and it’s reaching hard for some symbolism but it’s just ok. Maybe in 1973 it was groundbreaking (the cinematography is fantastic, acting is good) but I noticed Steve has Suspiria in his collection. I’ve seen that before and it’s rather superior to this.
-
If you’re still taking requests I would love to watch Mid-90s again and I would also like to see Yellowjackets. Thanks Steve.

I never saw the remake but I’m a big fan of the original. Opening scene is almost as iconic as the ending scene. Rest of the movie is really good too.

The biggest problem with the original is the entire plot dump about 3/4 in.
The biggest problem with the remake is the concept over-reaching.

My son likes watching wrestling a little, but I have to tell him it's nowhere near was good as it used to be. WWE is like a stupid cartoon.
I show him a YouTube video of attitude era stuff and he loves it. I try to avoid the adult stuff though, kinda tough.

I watch AEW every week with my son, it can be corny and raunchy (not anything like attitude era but TV-14 excrement) and it's pretty entertaining.

I'm the opposite...been wanting to watch original for years, but did see remake.
It was an experience, haha, and pretty wild. I have no reason to watch again, but very well made and acted and I recommend for film buffs. I still want to see Argento's original.

Damn you Steve. Just watched kids for the first time in like 25 years. I forgot how annoying some of it is, but it definitely brought me back. That soundtrack is a lot doper than I remember it being, but damn that last 10 minutes is hard to watch.
Lol, I’ve been watching some emotionally draining movies. Thanks Steve ;D

I really liked Kids (as much as it's possible to like a movie like that) but I know some people and critics who really viscerally took against it. I feel like the closer you were to living that kind of lifestyle, or knowing people who did, the more you'll like the movie. I suspect for many it's hard to believe or imagine kids being like that, possibly because they don't want to.
Now go watch Requiem For A Dream again just to really make yourself feel good.

Lol, did that like 4 years ago. It’s such a great freaking movie, but the 2nd time convinced me that I never need to see it again.
I was a senior in high school when kids came out and I was at the height of my heavy drug use and not giving a excrement about anything phase in life. The 2nd time I got high, first time I ever laced weed with anything, was right in Washington Square Park, right where they beat the excrement out of that guy. I’ve been in the Tunnel, which is the club they’re in, and I used to go to The Limelight enough. Wasn’t a skateboarder, but we would grind the rails and jump the stairs at Union Square with skates. I wouldn’t say I was as deprived as Tully and Casper were, but I wasn’t far behind and many of the people I hung out were worse than them. So, LOL, I identified with the movie a bit. Another LOL, probably a good reason we hit it off so well, as im sure you can identify with it pretty easily too.

I don’t know if it’s possible, and I’ve watched it and re-watched it again, but if somehow you could add the entire This Is England series (‘86, ‘88 and ‘90) that would be fantastic. It’s on YouTube but it’s not the easiest way to watch it and it’s one of the best series I’ve ever seen. Literally on my Mt. Rushmore of tv.
After seeing Uncut Gems, I’m curious about Good Time now. Haven’t seen Memento in awhile either. I want to watch Blood In, Blood Out again. I know it’s in there and I haven’t seen it in literally 20 years.
-
I recommend Good Time.
-
So Gummo…um yeah.
-
Also, recently watched Shutter Island, Harold and Maude and Dog Day Afternoon (all finally) and have to say I loved Harold and Maude. Slow start but a couple of really hilarious scenes and an uplifting movie too. Shutter Island has that twist at the end that, frankly, I should have seen coming and Dog Day Afternoon was good, Pacino great of course, but I wasn’t blown away by it. I guess, in it’s day, it was groundbreaking.
-
So Gummo…um yeah.

Feel good fun for the whole family.
I actually went down the Harmony Korine rabbit hole a bit yesterday and watched his Letterman appearances which were hilarious (I’m pretty sure he smoked crack before the third one) and watched the show/doc about him on Vice which actually shed a pretty good light on him and, to me, explained a lot about his writing and movie making. Despite how obviously weird Gummo was, I didn’t think it was bad at all. It’s not gonna make my top 10 list but I’m intrigued enough that I’m probably gonna watch Julian Donkey Boy soon. I’d even watch Spring Breakers but it’s not on the list.
-
Spring Breakers was interesting.
-
Marcel the Shell With Shoes On
-
Can you get Beerfest? Guilty pleasure.

Julien Donkey Boy was in the similar vein as Gummo along the lines of good movie, not in a huge rush to see again. I do appreciate Korine’s commitment to his craft though. There’s certainly more of a story here than in Gummo. Herzog is out of his mind here and Chloe Sevigny is fantastic as the sister. Her phone call posing as the mother was really touching. The schizophrenia is portrayed convincingly well.
I tried to watch Ken Park and all it is is a 13-minute interview with Larry Clark and then tried to watch Oldboy and it’s the movie, but with 2 English guys doing commentary over it, making it unwatchable. I’ve always wanted to see that. I’d ask for Spring Breakers too while I’m at it. Thanks Steve, I wouldn’t have fallen down the movie rabbit hole without you so I appreciate it. I almost want to see the Von Trier movies at this point, but that may be a little too much lol.

So, Oldboy.
I liked it. Amazing cinematography, acting and a generally fucked up good movie. Again, saying this a lot lately, won’t be in a huge rush to watch it again but it was one of the best movies I’ve seen recently. You’re on edge the whole movie and that’s a good thing.

I read last night that the studio edited Lee’s version of the movie so heavily and took like 35 minutes of backstory out of it that he actually renounced the movie altogether. I’m obviously not gonna bother with that one.
Do not watch Ken Park. I had no idea what I was getting into. It’s not only not a very good movie, it’s gratuitous just for the sake of being gratuitous. I want to wash my eyeballs.

Wow, Rob Zombie called it the most unnerving movie he’s ever watched and Tarantino called it a masterpiece. It’s in Steve’s collection?
I might as well watch it now. I’m in the murks as it is. I hate to keep harping on this movie, but I’m convinced Larry Clark is a pedophile after what I watched. I honestly fast forwarded parts of it because, what was the point? Someone described perfectly. Basically Happiness without the wit or dialogue and all the bluntness, none of the subtlety (paraphrasing)
-
Not to add to the already whiny chorus of asks I’ve requested but Sound of Metal always intrigued me. It’d be cool to see that. The whole concept of the movie kind of frightens me because of what the movie is about and the fact I have horrendous tinnitus but it definitely sounds intriguing.

Steve, I’m assuming you’re adding episodes as they are available because I see Ep 1 of S2 is up?
I enjoyed the first season. It frankly started better off then it ended, imo, but it’s a good show, albeit you have to suspend some reality to fully enjoy it. Couple of episodes had some crazy endings, for sure though.

Steve, anyway you can add the new Yellowjackets episode from last week? Thanks for adding Ted Lasso by the way. I’m halfway through season 2. The footie scenes are kinda hokey, but the show itself is great. You can definitely tell the guy from Scrubs has a hand in it. Any scene with Roy Kent is gold.

I'm curious to see your opinion.
I like Ari Aster, but I shut this off after about 30 mins.

So…where to begin? A little mix of Kaufman and Lynch for sure. I actually liked it. I got interrupted twice, so I would like to see it in its entirety. I definitely understand why people wouldn’t like it. The whole part with Amy Ryan and Nathan Lane could have been cut out, but there were times when the movie felt like “huge” for lack of a better term. The first act was kinda surreal but a total play on his psyche and fears. The play was my favorite part, to be honest. Just something about it felt very profound. The end was entertaining but a little anticlimactic. I will add one thing, Parker Posey can definitely still get it, that part was freaky.
Is it up there with his first two movies? No. But, happy to have seen it and would say it’s thought provoking and kinda makes you think about your own life in a way and I’d say that always makes for a better than decent movie. Note: didn’t realize that was Bill Hader on the phone as the UPS guy.
One thing I have to add, from watching all his movies, is this guy must have one hell of a family.

Lots to unpack here.
I'll just sum it up by saying it wasn't my cup of tea. But, i do love Ari Aster, so this one won't sour me on him going fwd.

I definitely understand why anyone wouldn’t like this. It’s all over the place, it’s meandering, it’s kinda surreal, a little confusing, the plot is a bit all over the place. I liked it but it’s definitely not my favorite.

Steve, this may be a hard ask because I know it’s not easy to find but if you could get This is England ‘90 up that would be awesome. You added ‘86 and ‘88 but ‘90 would finish it off. I’ve watched (and re-watched) this show basically on YouTube but to be able to watch it in a row uninterrupted…damn. Appreciate all you do.

Strange, they all should have downloaded at the same time. Lemme take a look.

Yup it’s there. Thanks so much. I cannot recommend that whole series enough. It’s a top 5 show, ever, for me. It’s tough to watch sometimes, but the acting is incredible and, believe it or not, pretty funny too.

PCU was one of my favorite movies in the 90's, any chance of finding that one?
-
Gonna assume it’s way too soon to ask for Killers of the Flower Moon right?
Way too early but I do have it monitored. Monitoring has some prereqs, must be at least 720p, English language, etc. As soon as a copy is available anywhere, it should auto-download.

Steve, I have a Plex technical question. I have a couple of remote users on my Plex server, one of them can only get very low resolution streams (like 440p) regardless of the file quality. They don't have this problem with other Plex servers they're attached to so I assume it's a problem my end. I've poked around in the settings but I'm not finding anything that could be causing it, and I have a gigabit fibre connection to the house so I don't think it's a bandwidth issue.
Any suggestions?

If it's only affecting one user, then assume it's their end.
They may have adjusted their settings at one point.
Have them check their playback quality here

You could have fiber but if they have an unstable connection, plex will auto drop the quality, as well.

No problem. Do you have Tautulli setup? It's a third party Plex logger, gives a ton of insight on your traffic and library. It may help you chase this issue.
If they're "stuck" in Relay, you can disable it temporarily to see if it corrects the problem. Relay essentially means they're connecting to your server via a Plex owned relay server.

Yeah, it looks like I didn't have direct connection available so it was connecting via relay servers. I've manually specified a port and made direct connection available, we're just testing now to see if that will fix it.

I haven’t. If you saw my tv shows post I’d been watching This Is England (the miniseries) scenes and had Shame Meadows on the brain and I’ve been wanting to see Dead Man’s Shoes for awhile now. Thanks to Steve, I will finally get that chance. You ever watch the TiE shows?

yes
you don't have to watch any of the other seasons to start on S5...

You do know it's literally just come out in theaters, right? Unless you get really lucky with a screener which virtually never happens these days because they have individual watermarks, the only rip out there are cams. And if you're willing to watch cam rips you should be ashamed of yourselves.

I know Steve is a horror genre fan so I figured he’d be all over this movie—it’s supposedly really good—but it can’t hurt to ask right? I don’t expect it to be up tomorrow or anything. The 2 links he put up for requests are blocked on my end, so I didn’t know where else to ask. 🤷♂️
