Quote
Curtis James Jackson III, the rapper better known as 50 Cent, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday. In court papers filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Hartford, Conn., Mr. Jackson reported assets and debts each in the range of $10 million to $50 million.

The attorney listed on the bankruptcy petition couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Monday. The filing comes days after a jury directed Mr. Jackson to pay $5 million to a woman who sued over a sex tape, the Associated Press reported.

I don't believe he's broke for a second.

The funniest thing about the asset/liablity statement is the ridiculous range. "He has anywhere from 50-100 million in assets and 50-100 million in liabilities"

Title: Re: The Hip Hop Thread
Post by: Johnny English on July 13, 2015, 09:33:23 PM
He's filed for Chapter 11. It doesn't mean he's broke, it means he can't lay his hands on the immediate cash to pay his immediate debts; Chapter 11 gives him court-ordered protection from other proceedings in order that he has the time to liquidate or mortgage assets in order to get the cash. They said on the radio that his biggest earner has been his investment in Vitamin Water, bigger even than his music, so presumably his net worth is primarily tied up in that stock.

Future is garbage, sounds like a pre pubescent robot who suffered blunt force trauma to the head , and Kanye is criminally overrated. He fell off as an MC after his second album. Great producer but there are others who make just as good beats . J Cole and Kendrick Lamar are good, but overrated , yet elevated because the lyrics in commercial rap are utter trash now.

Your opinion just differs from mine . I could name at least 50 people I'd listen to before Future . No use debating anything because it's all a matter of preference

I could name quite a few who match up with or surpass J Cole and Kendrick Lamar lyrically.

But I've seen enough to know a huge socioeconomic and psychological examination of hip hop and commercial pop rap would be a waste of time .

Enjoy your music . Not gonna sit here and sling mud all day .

About half the album has really good songs sans some schizophrenic moments where Kanye seems like he's gone off the deep end.

Kanye should have spent more time or paid some ghost writers because his verses weren't that good. He probably talked about freaking in every song and included some really bizarre excrement like the Oprah outro, poopchute bleaching, etc. Idk if it's intentional or crazy.

Some of the tracks change drastically for no reason at all mid-song. Almost like he had a bunch of different beats and samples in mind that he wanted to integrate and ran out of time.

I could do without the 2 intermissions and last couple minutes of 30 hours and the last 2 tracks all together.

That's all for now

man the last few pages in this thread are disappointing

i can understand why people dont like future, he just sounds like hes mumbling, but honestly nobody offers what he offers aurally, his style is quite unique. get past the mumbling and read some of his lyrics and youll be surprised to find that he talks about his emotions a lot. hes not going to sound like a philospher but honestly its unfair to group him with the artists who have trash sounds and no lyrical content just because he sounds like a mumbling robot

kanye didnt fall off after his 2nd album, lyrically and production wise graduation was up there with the 1st two. i like a few songs on graduation more than i like any other kanye song, but as an album in totality i enjoy college dropout the most

kanye as a person now comes off very obtuse and annoying but youd be playing yourself if you dont acknowledge that hes saying half the excrement he says so that people could just talk about him, its all about publicity. its about the end game with him, he knows thats good for him profit-wise be it for his music or for his clothing products, irrespective of whether that publicity is positive or negative talk

i dont know how you could listen to this album and say it sucks and say youre not letting your view of him bias your opinion, this album is great. if you wanted to say that about the 2013 album i could buy it, it was kinda trash and sound quality wise just sounded very cheap. life of pablo is awesome and in a lot of the songs i can actually see aspects of the old kanye from the 1st 3 albums, which is something i never thought id hear again. the hate against him is too damn overblown right now. and to deny he has any sort of musical talent is just crazy talk, im not going to talk about "newer kanye" because the opinion on him is so strongly dichotomized, but early kanye excrement, be it released or unreleased tracks, is a treasure trove for a hip hop fan

people have to stop taking everything he says so seriously and understand most of the excrement he does is for the media hits/clicks

i dont know how you could listen to this album and say it sucks and say youre not letting your view of him bias your opinion, this album is great. if you wanted to say that about the 2013 album i could buy it, it was kinda trash and sound quality wise just sounded very cheap. life of pablo is awesome and in a lot of the songs i can actually see aspects of the old kanye from the 1st 3 albums, which is something i never thought id hear again. the hate against him is too damn overblown right now. and to deny he has any sort of musical talent is just crazy talk, im not going to talk about "newer kanye" because the opinion on him is so strongly dichotomized, but early kanye excrement, be it released or unreleased tracks, is a treasure trove for a hip hop fan

people have to stop taking everything he says so seriously and understand most of the excrement he does is for the media hits/clicks

It's not half. His behavior is way too erratic, way too frequently for it not to be mostly organic. Of course he turns it up, but he generally comes off as an insane person who's controlling and who's fame has corrupted his ability to filter his emotions/thoughts/pathology.

He's just wired a certain way. He's a musical savant, and lacks the self awareness to realize when he's acting like an idiot and when he isn't. That's hard to change particularly for successful people when they've gotten to a certain point by being *that way*. Defying the odds, chip on their shoulder etc, insecurity. He has insanely deep rooted insecurity that he has not dealt with, and he clearly needs some freaking meds.

it's interesting what delusion and belief can propel you towards.  It's not a virtuous process at all but people see the exterior gains (financial, fame, etc) and then say that's success.

Kanye fits the Schizotypal archetype to the letter.

i know what you mean when you talk about how celebrity can change a person, how frequently erratic he is and how that mAkes you believe it is organic but at the end of the day that is purely subjective, there is no way of knowing how much of it is real and how much of it is for show. ive seen enough to know that even if he were to get a full psychiatric eval it would still just be an opinion as to
how much of it was real or not, people know what to say to come off crazy for a purpose and acutely psychotic patients know what to say to make it sound like theyre completely okay and dont belong in a psych ward, and the only reason you have to doubt what theyre saying is because you know youre speaking to them in an inpatient psych unit, meaning some excrement must have gone down to have them speaking in front of you. i digress but point is there is no way of ever knowing how much of it is truly organic, i just know that with kanye the timing of most of the crazy excrement he says and does consistently matches up to when he drops new music, or is dropping new clothing products, or needs money for a project

i have seen met and treated schizotypal patients and i can see why youd say that too but kanye is not schizotypal, if anythinghe is more histrionic or narcissistic but honestly i dont give a excrement because i freaking hated psych

point is, people shouldnt get so worked up about the things he says and does

I hate to rehash this argument but when you grow up with Boogie Down Productions, Slick Rick, the Beasties, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, Gangstarr, etc etc etc (not even mentioning the Biggies and Tupacs of the World) "hip-hop" just seems amusing now. Hip hop used to be story telling, break dancing, turntables, real excrement...now, I don't know anymore.

Its interesting to hear this perspective because I've never actually thought he has gotten in trouble in person for publicity.  I could just be naive though.

If you look at the times Kanye get himself into trouble its usually a rant regarding something he's extremely passionate about.  When you hear him talk or even see him talk during these rants, you can see how much he cares about that topic.  His body literally starts to shake and he can't sit or stand still.  You can see the pent up emotion and angst rushing through his body.  It's almost like a child when they get upset about something.  Kanye often says things that are out of line and insensitive, but I find it hard to believe that he's actually an poopchute.  You may not agree with his viewpoints or the way he lives his life, but he's way too much of a humanitarian to be a bad person.  He says these things because this is his opinion on the subject and he really cares about changing the status quo.

The funniest part is Kanye has been doing this since he first got popular.  The thing is no one noticed back then because social media wasn't around to blow it out of proportion.

I mean most of what is considered hip hop right now should be separated into pop, r&B, and trap music.  I can name you a bunch of artists from this generation that fit the bill of what you're nostalgic of right now.

Please do. The only "new" hip-hop I'm into is Mf doom, Blackalicious, Blackstar (Mos Def, Talib Kweli), Jedi Mind Tricks, and they're all old now.

It's funny, Flav is such a joke now, but Public Enemy was THE excrement. You're not finding a harder song than "Shut em Down". The beat, Chuck D. A great song, ridiculous beat, with some very thought provoking lyrics.

How old are you?  The older I get the harder I find it to relate to some of these artists.  You just gotta dig past the top artists.  Here's a list of newer rappers I spend most of my time listening to.  Next to their names are my favorite albums.  I find myself liking their older albums better.

Lyrical Artists
Logic - Undeniable, Young Sinatra, The incredible True Story
Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
J Cole - The Warm Up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=327d8u8sy5o (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=327d8u8sy5o), Forest Hills Drive
Kendrick - Section 80, Maad City is obviously amazing too
Pusha T - Anything

Story Tellers
Childish Gambino - Everything I like his older mixtapes but, "because the internet" is amazing
Chance The Rapper - Everything.  Acid Rap is my favorite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e67Q-sTHVhc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e67Q-sTHVhc)  His sound is very different, but give it a chance
Tyler the Creator - Wolf, Goblin
School Boy Q - Oxymoron

Also if you like Wu Tang specifically Ghostface, you may like or hate Action Bronson.

I listened to Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly over the weekend, I'm not a big hip hop fan but I really like Thundercat. I liked quite a lot of the album but - at the risk of sounding like an old man - why does he have to use "freak", "bitch" and "person of color" so much? At times it seems like he's saying nothing other than those three words over and over again in different permutations, and it's really detracting.

in his 2013 album "good kid, m.a.a.d city", kendrick has a track called "money trees" where he ends every line by saying "ya bitch" (pronouncing it "ya bish").

i liked a couple of his older albums i listened to, which were section80 and good kid, but im not sure how much jazz influence they have compared with to pimp a butterfly. from both those albums i remember there being a good mix of some pretty gangsta-rap type songs thrown in with some songs that overall had pretty good messages imo.

to pimp came out during the busiest time in med school for me and i still havent listened to it fully to be completely honest so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but i believe the soulful jazz sound was something that really became big with him pretty recently with his 2015 album. there are probably a couple of good kendrick fans in here who could do a better job of answering that for you

Maybe, but it seems to me that the lyrics are a far more important part of hip hop than many other genres of music, and so this seems quite lazy. I do really like the album though.

this song is literally better than 95% of the rap we hear nowadays, which is disgustingly dominated by mumble rap

the only rappers in the 'mainstream' left worth listening to nowadays are j cole, kendrick lamar, childish gambino/donald glover, logic, vinny staples, and tyler the creator

I was listening to El-P, Aesop Rock, Blackalicious and Camu Tao last night and forgot how great they were. The rhyming, the cadence. And then it dawned on me, they’re all old now.

Listen to

Kid Cudi - Leader of the delinquents
Kid Cudi ft. Travis Scott - The Scott’s

I’ll add Chance to that list too. I know some people don’t like him but mainstream rap is so trash there is not need to complain about someone better than 99% of the field.

i forgot to add cudi to that list. i still listen to him, his new tracks are fire, and the ones he previewed on IG live sound amazing. they're too far away from actually dropping

i'm not a big fan of chance's sound but i appreciate that he attempts to make good music and not some mindless excrement

the state of hip hop/rap music and its fans has gotten so bad now that even if you try to look for classic 80s and 90s music playlists, they're curated like derriere. you have to look for/create your own playlists for that kind of stuff if you want the playlist to hold true

Listen to the background on albums like Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Dre’s Chronic 2001...

My favorite thing about Future songs is that you can basically predict how the song goes just by looking at the song title.

Tequila Shots and Elsie's Baby Boy are probably top two on first listen. Show Out, Dive and She Knows This next. Sad People seems like the one that will grow on me the most.

Show Out would be a lot better if it weren't for "And they got guns the size of Kevin Hart, please don't think it's a joke." That line alone probably drops it a notch.

Production value is so good. Another Day just came back on, and that beat is so good, too.

Phoebe Bridgers has never done it for me. Kyoto and Motion Sickness are pretty good. She's okay. Nothing great. I wouldn't be surprised if she eventually puts out some songs I love, but I'm not there yet with her.

I enjoy boygenius more than anything she's done by herself.  I think if you take Julien Baker out of boygenius, I would've never listened to them.

We had tickets to see Julien Baker at ACL and Bridgers was rumored to be playing some songs with her, but it got cancelled.  Figured we'd catch her the next time around...then COVID happened.

No.

Either get high and listen to the 3 Cudi Man on the Moon albums or drive at night with the album on max volume.

You can skip most of the rest of his discography unless you can access his mixtapes.

But Soundtrack 2 My Life, Pursuit of Happiness, Alive, Cudi Zone and Scott Mescudi vs the World might be my intro songs for him. Tons of other songs too (Day n Nite is the one you've most likely heard of). I hate chopping off the list where I did because I could name most of those 2 albums and some other songs too.

I mean, I named like 20% of those 2 albums, and I didn't even name probably his 2 biggest radio songs (Day n Nite, Erase Me). They are poppier compared to some of the other songs, but they are definitely his sound.

To be fair, I haven't listened to much Cudi outside of those 2 albums and the mixtapes. I can listen to MOTM1 and MOTM2 front to back and like every song (or at least most songs).

Just What I Am is one of my favorite Cudi songs, too.

Virtually all the music I listen to now is on Spotify, so there are some great mixtape songs by a lot of guys I just don't listen to anymore.

I haven't heard The Prayer in years, but yes, that might be his best song.

I always loved the beat in Dat New New, too. I like poppier excrement sometimes, sue me.

Pretty happy that I'm going to be on a Cudi kick now for the next week or so. Haven't listened to the first two MLOMs in full for years, so I'm discovering songs I haven't listened to in years (like The Mood). REVOFEV used to be my text ringtone.

multiple listens through

it's quite obvious that she knows this and tequila shots are going to be two of the 'singles' off of this album. she knows this for all intents and purposes already has an official music video. both are great

i think outside of those two, my favorites off the album are

solo dolo iii
sad people
sep 16th

again, i cannot say enough of the production value on this album. there are for sure contemporary sounds and aspects to each beat on the album, but at the same time i feel like each beat is built off of the type of sound that drew us to cudi's music in the first place > 10 years ago

very very pleased. i want to see the next video releases and i want to know what he's going to make of the 'to be continued' message from the last song

Today a fat ofay was preachin' desperation,
to those who bought the words he sold, to pay his recreation,
they sat in 'udder belief' as if, he created creation

now it's been said,   and nothin's changed

seriously,  who gives a freak?

I expected to hate that and really didn't. That kid got to do a bunch of high end yayo backstage with a musician he clearly loves given he knows every single word of his songs, and got a memory he'll treasure forever.

You ever listen to Run the Jewels?  I feel like they may be up your alley
From 7 years ago…good call. I’ve gotten pretty into them. They can rhyme with anyone from any era and El-P is an amazing producer.
