Title: 2014-2015 NHL thread
Post by: Johnny English on June 25, 2014, 08:45:33 PM
Marian Gaborik re-ups with LA for seven years, $34M.

Ryan Callahan re-ups with Tampa for six years, $35M.

Dave Bolland has told the Maple Leafs he wants an 8 year contract.

One of these things is not like the others.

Josh Ho Sang, huh?

Very very very talented head case. Could be the next Alex Daigle or <pick a nut that became a very good player>

He was one of those based on talent alone would be near a top 10 pick but was crossed off many teams lists because he aspires to be a party animal off the ice.

How the freak did he get a NMC in the first place? At his very best he was just north of mediocre.

I think that's a little harsh on him, I think he's quite a useful player. Anyway he just accepted a trade to Buffalo; apparently the worst team in the league last year by a considerable distance are more attractive than the Laffs.

Benoit Pouliot signed with the Oilers for 5yrs / $20M, and the Sens re-signed Michalek for 3yrs / $12M.

Or Jussi Jokinen for that matter.

I wanted Cammalleri on the Devils since the trade deadline last year. Contract is fine in terms of dollar amount but is a year too long. On a day where Benoit Puliot got the contract he did, I'm not going to bitch that the Devils went a year too long for a guy who fits like a glove and will probably lead the team in scoring at the end of the year.

Don't like the Boyle signing, the rangers should have kept Stralman who is on the right side of 30, entering some prime years and is still improving yearly.

The Poo signing is freaking insanity, lol. Good luck with that Edmonton. The Bolland signing is quite possibly the dumbest thing I have seen this FA period, horrible.

Considering the absolutely insane dealings going on right now (Orpik got what?!?!?!), it was a very nice move for the Jets.

Erhoff to the Pens seems like the steal of the day, and the Canucks got Ryan Miller at a decent price.

Spezza only has a year left on his contract; we got a big young winger with some talent, a couple of unknowns and a second round pick. Hemsky was never staying once Spezza wanted out. I'm not hugely upset.

Having had the conversation with MB on more than once occasion, I can tell you that there is virtually no conceivable trade scenario involving Evander Kane that he would consider acceptable. Drew Doughty, Jeff Carter, Anze Kopitar, and 24 hours with a naked Kate Upton and a bag of roofies might be enough for him. Might.

I think I can explain the way Canada shook out. Imagine all of the Canadian fanbases hate other Canadian teams the most, and all of them hate Boston second most. So when they're all added up, Boston comes out with the most because the primary hate was split up.

^ I'm not sure i'm on board with this. The league is already watered down, adding 4 more teams will make it worse.

Adding a team in Las Vegas  doesn't make sense either.  They've been having problems filling arenas in the sun belt for years, unless of course, they have a competitive roster (LA, ANA, SJ for example).  Phoenix gave tickets away at ridiculous prices, and still couldn't fill their arena.

I like the idea of Toronto getting a 2nd team, and Quebec City absolutely deserves another chance.  Seattle, i'm 50/50 on.

I largely agree with you, although I see a lot of sense in Seattle. It's a sport mad city that really gets behind all of its teams (at least the Seahawks and the Sounders, I don't know how well the Mariners are supported), and there's a shitload of corporate and personal wealth there to tap into. Add in a ready made rivalry with a large established team in Vancouver, and Seattle makes a huge amount of sense to me.

I do agree on Vegas; I'd be more inclined to create two expansion teams, and move two of the less supported teams e.g. the Panthers and the Coyotes.

I don't like this at all, Vegas? Did they not learn with Pheonix and down here. Those area's are too transient. All the hockey fans down here like other teams. It is going to take 2 generations to develop a loyalty.

They should move Phx and Fla to Seattle and Quebec. BTW Seattle has a history with hockey, they have a successful JR. team there.

Agreed. It's nice to see kids who are a year away from being counted on to fill roles play comfortably in pre-season, but the Flyers had no top 6 players playing today. Braden Schenn was the only Flyer of note out there on the offense. Coburn-MacDonald is the only decent D pair on the Flyers entire roster. Poor Steve Mason.

I like Haggerty, Fast, Duclair, and Hayes, but there all not playing this season. Pretty good future prospects, though.

Been offered a pair of 100 level tickets, for free, to the Sens home opener. Problem is it's the same night as the Jets play the Patriots.

It's a tougher decision than it might normally be. Ordinarily I wouldn't think twice about turning them down because there are 41 home games a season and I have fairly ready access to free tickets, but with the Jets playing like they have been and me moving away from Ottawa in a couple of months I'm very tempted to the hockey.

Interesting trade theory: currently the Senators have a 1a/1b situation in goal, with Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner sharing the work. Martin Brodeur is currently training with his son's QMJHL team, the Gatineau Olympiques, and has said he wants to play in the NHL still.

My friend has a theory that the Sens will look to trade Anderson to a goalie needy team (Oilers? Jets?) for a good sized return, and sign Brodeur to back up / coach / mentor Lehner. Thoughts? I reckon this would be a good move - I don't think Marty's got it in him to be an every night starter any more, this move would let him play as well as stay near his son and be involved with his junior hockey career.

Nash is a 6'4" guy he skates different. He is a much smoother skater. That said, despite his roly poly body, Kessel is pretty damn fast. The fat is going to take years off his career, but it won't affect his prime that much and he is in his prime right now. If he got into top shape who knows how fast he can be.

It's top speed and top acceleration. Grabner might be faster as a whole. You never know if a circumstance pissed Tavares off and adrenaline or some other circumstance made him get up and go faster then usual.

It's also a strangely selected subset of players; for example if you genuinely wanted the fastest players in the NHL you would need to have people like Havlat and Michalek on there. It's like they've cherry picked the top player from a bunch of teams to compare.

They didn't include Kreider, who is certainly way faster than Nash and MSL. I think they just tested this out on a few players. I will look for the article.

Redraft scenario: you have the opportunity to draft any three current NHL players for your team - one forward, one d-man, one goalie. You can only take one player from any team. Who do you take?

For me:

F - Ryan Getzlaf
D - Drew Doughty
G - Henrik Lundqvist

D: Lidstrom
G: Roy (and that says a lot, because i freaking hated him)

One of the doziest pieces of play I've seen in a long time just now from Artem Anisimov. Skating through the offensive line alongside the puck with his head turned looking behind him, got absolutely smoked by Gryba and drew a major. Yes, under NHL rules it's a penalty because the head was the principal point of conduct, but Anisimov deserved to get his head taken off just for his utter naivety. Really annoying.

I just got a chance to see it. That's was the type of hit they're legislating out of the game. That's said there should be some culpability on Anisimov' s part. Good Lord what was he freaking doing?

Your boy should have gotten the game and such but still there shouldn't be a suspension. In the old days Anisimov would still be sleep.

Entirely agree, I've no complaints about the penalty. I was just astonished that a professional hockey player would be so dozy as to skate into the offensive zone with the puck at his side and his head turned backwards. It's an invitation to get smoked.

You got the Flying Puck as Puck pointed out, which is right outside Penn Station on 7th Ave and 30th St, and you have Legends, which I would call first if I were you guys, and that's pretty close too, on 33rd St. between 6th and 5th Aves. Legends also is huge with the footie (they're also known as the Football Factory).

I would tell them to call any bar before they go to it. A bar would have to have Center Ice, first of all, and Sens-Jets isn't exactly a game many in NY will be clamoring for. Hard enough to get an Islanders game on in the city.

Yeah that's why some of the bars on the list would be decent options, the first is a Sabres bar, I don't think you would get much resistance getting another game on. The Flying Puck was packed to the gills during the playoffs from what I hear.

I wish the current goons had the talent that some of the tougher guys in the 80's and 90's had. It sure seems like many of them just take up roster spots nowadays.

Ring or nor ring Alfie was 9000 times the player.

Not sure about loopy so much, but the stories seem to be that the last couple of seasons he became less of a players' coach and more of a draconian, to the extent that some of the senior players were starting to have a real problem with him. I'm assuming this is part of Methot's undisclosed issue, although he can't have been upsetting Ryan that much given he just signed a big new contract.

Still, I'll give Cameron a chance. I'm bored of watching us lose despite Andy and The Beastman standing on their heads, the back end has been a mess and we don't have enough firepower to make up for it, and I'm also sick of playing "pick the lines with a dart".

Hamilton getting a team would be awesome, the appetite and the market for hockey in the region massively outstrips that which can be serviced by one team. MLSE don't want it but it's ridiculous that it hasn't happened yet.

Copps would need a ton of expensive upgrades to hold an NHL team, and where would they play in the interim? Can't share the ACC, OHL arenas are too small(London is the largest in the area, at just over 9k).

And downtown Hamilton would be awful. It already sucks driving there when the Bulldogs play, imagine 5k more people? ugh.

I was using Hamilton as a catch all for the GTA. There was talk a year or two ago of a new arena in Markham.

Toronto needs a second team. The market is too big to only have one.

I just went with Copps because when Basille was going to buy the Coyotes, Copps was the target destination with Basille paying for the upgrades himself. I doubt the Markham arena will ever come to fruition, not with the budget concerns in the whole of the GTA.

I remember they were floating an idea of an arena in the Niagara area, casino-funded of course. That could work...
Title: Re: 2014-2015 NHL thread

Niagara's too far, they need to be in the GTA catchment area. Niagara would eat into the Buffalo market which wouldn't really be acceptable.

That's based entirely upon numbers that the Star has pulled out of thin air. The only thing standing in the way of a second franchise in the GTA is the fact that Bettman is too excrement scared to stand up to MLSE and do what's right for the sport.

Meh he is kind of shot if you ask me. They won last year in spite of him, not because of him. He was a good 4th liner though. Just way way way too expensive for that roll. I am surprised they didn't use their cap exemption on him like the Rangers used on Brad Richards, unless they used their 2 up already, to be honest I am not sure if they did. I know that was in the discussion.

Yeah, but that roster is loaded with veteran talent. On a team like the Sens he'd play a much bigger role, and he's not even 30 yet. It's a stupid contract but it falls off, so over the next five years it averages out to something like $4.5M per year which isn't awful.

I don't really see him as a player that will last into his 30's, he won't age well. Then again I am not sure if it's the way he is being used or if the physical beatings and partying has finally caught up to him, he is an odd duck. He is worth taking a chance on though, just in case he isn't done, I will agree with you there. He has been a Capt. or A. Capt in every place he has been from JR on up.

2 teams have now given up on him. As Puck noted, he's on the downswing of his career, no matter if he's not 30 yet.

Even if he joins another team, he'll play good until he gets comfortable and it's the same story with this guy.

I understand why they want Jagr, I don't understand why he'd want to go there. Even if he can get them over the line, they're not going deep.

Jagr just wants to play even at his age, he's the first in the rink and the last one to leave. He probably has the single best work ethic in hockey, a little known fact.

I wouldn't say I followed him, but I just went to look at the site and it has gone which led me to the stories of his death.

In other hockey news, I'm going to put this out there. Mark Stone should win the Calder. He's the only rookie to be in the top 5 in all offensive categories, he's outstanding defensively, and he has spent a large part of the season playing on a line with two other rookies.

I would give it to Ekblad, he's and 18 year old defenseman that's stepped in and looked like a seasoned vet. That's exceedingly rare for a guy that age. He has looked a lot better than any defenseman at that age since I don't know when. Again, I think Stone and Johnny Hockey are probably more dynamic at this point but they're a good 3-4 years older. I have no argument with either of the 3 winning it and I am certainly not saying it because of where I live at the moment.

Ekblad is a good shout. Gaudreau has fancy numbers but I don't think he's as dominant a player as Stone, Stone does everything. He steals the puck like Datsyuk in his prime, he's a complete two way forward whose skating isn't as bad as people claim, and he thinks like a veteran. Just look at this goal:

He plays a lot like Kevin Hayes. When the Rangers play the Sens, I am sure you will be impressed with Hayes. Unfortunately, for Hayes he didn't start the season this good, it's like every block of 5-10 games he gets better and better. I honestly believe he is one of the 5 best forwards on the entire Rangers team and maybe better than that. He's no Calder threat though because of his first 30 odd games. He didn't have the adjustment to pro hockey that Stone ( he was in the AHL) had, not a knock at Stone in the slightest, so it took him longer to figure it out. Yeah I have noticed Stone he is a great pick up.

Here is Hayes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5T1h5vWe_M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5T1h5vWe_M)

I am including this one, the goal is nice but has no business being scored at the NHL level, because it shows his defensive prowess as he gets the puck backchecking, it's the only one I can find:

I could really do without two games against the Rangers. We're in a great run of form but apart from two games against the Leafs we have a bitch of a run-in and we've now lost Michalek and Puempel to injury to go along with MacArthur, Neil, Anderson and Lehner. (I'm not including Phillips as we have reached the stage of his absence being addition by subtraction, sadly.)

Actually, it's the 2 best teams this month going at it, it should be great hockey. I like watching Karlsson, make that love watching Karlsson.

I understand your sentiment. It's too bad your team waited so long to catch fire, I do hope you beat out the Bruins even if it means a first round matchup against the Rangers.

I'd have no problem with a first round matchup with the Rangers, it's actually getting there that concerns me. It will definitely be fun to watch and Karlsson has been back to his very best since Methot came back and allowed him to get on with being Erik Karlsson, but this is still a flawed team that's lacking depth. Our fourth line tonight is Legwand-Greening-Smith, and Alex Chiasson is playing on the top line. That's not a team that is going to do damage in the postseason.

And I don't want the bundle of sticks Habs fans to face the Rangers and cry about last season's Emelin slash, Krieder "running goalies" and all that excrement. For them to lose in the 1st round would be amazing.

Tampa is still scary in a 7 game series. Not a team I want to face.

Looks like the Hamburglar is going to be out for a little bit, the injury from the collision with Couture isn't right. Anderson in net this morning at practice but we don't know for sure whether he's game ready. Our only fit goaltending option is Chris Driedger, who was an emergency call up from the ECHL. Not sure that the ACC is an ideal place for his first start.

Sadly the Laffs couldn't do us a favour. We need Boston to drop two points more than us in the remaining games; they're on the road against Washington, Florida and Tampa, while we've got a home game v Pittsburgh and road games against Toronto, Philly and the Rangers. It's a hell of a race but I don't think we're going to quite get ahead of them.

The dark horse is Pittsburgh who are not playing well at all and are missing key players, if we beat them in Ottawa then we're only a point behind them. Their other remaining games are home to the Islanders who are also slumping, and on the road against Philly who are ridiculously strong at home and Buffalo.

It's an incredibly exciting end to the season.

I would, they're a garbage playoff team. There's no depth there, none. Their defense and goaltending are horrid and I believe that Malkin/Crosby can be shut down enough to the point they're a non factor. I am saying this, any team that loses to that garbage, doesn't deserve to win the Stanley Cup. If Pitt wins the first round I will be amazed, there's no chance they will win a second. I have never ever said the Rangers are all conquering. I know they're not and they have some holes in their game, in the cap era all teams do. The Rangers have very good depth in all spots. They have a better than even chance of getting back to the finals. However, there are a few teams that can beat them in a 7 games series. Those teams are Tampa, Detroit, Islanders, Boston (not likely), and the Caps (very unlikely). I do not think the Pens have a snowballs chance in hell of beating the Rangers.

Deal. Roll over and let us take 7th, much rather face Montreal over 7 than the Rangers. Despite you shafting us in the last two weeks I still think the Rangers are the second best team in the league after the Blues. We can take the Habs.

If we can't take 1 point out of these last 4 then we don't deserve anything. I already hate this team.

I would take one positive out of it though. There's no way Capuano and this piece of excrement staff could survive that, right? Right?

As a Ranger fan I'd much rather face the Sens, not just because I don't want to face Boston if they don't have to, but also because I would be slightly less upset to lose to a team not from Boston if they lost in the 1st round anyway.

Also Calgary is doing their job against LA right now.

A full strength Rangers team will not struggle against the Sens, we've had a great run to get here but the Rangers are the best team I've seen this season. Give us Montreal though, we've got those fuckers' number.

Also, Larry Brooks is a dick:

Larry Brooks ‏@NYP_Brooksie  4m4 minutes ago
Senators will need to play a whole lot better in Philly than they did against mentally and physically drained Rangers.

Mentally and physically drained? They've played the same number of games as the Sens, and they called up some fresh blood to rest the stars.

Last night's loss was so freaking Islanders it's not even funny. I do not have a lot of confidence going in. I'll say one thing, for all the talent 91 has, he has so much freaking heart it's not funny. Tavares almost single handedly won that game last night.

We need Hamonic and Neilsen back for Wednesday and Grabbo would be a bonus. I thought Washington played very dirty against the Rangers yesterday, so getting Martin back would help too. Too much dead wood, and that's especially what behind our bench. Besides all his usual dumb excrement, he sends out Clutterbuck for the shootout?!

The Krejci extension was a bit of a headscratcher as well. I can't see him going to Toronto to be Shanahan's yes man though.

It's a long haul to do that. Puck's right about the roster, and the farm isn't in great shape. You can't build a winning team through trades alone, that's the mistake that the Leafs have been making for so long; pretty much every team that wins the Stanley Cup has a core of homegrown players, and if Babcock can win a Cup with Kadri, Reimer, Reilly and Gardiner as its heart then he's earning every penny of that $50M.

Unless he manages to turn the franchise around.  If he wins a Cup in Toronto, he's a God.

He's a great coach but that roster has to be blown up. Kessel to me is a Gaborik like player without the defensive prowess. Meaning hes going to have to play on a team that has really good players and his lazy self absorbed self can play a complimentary part.  I want to make clear Gaborik is not lazy at all, just that he isnt a guy alone that would win a cup, but on a LA type team fuhgedaboudit. Kessel I think can be similar in that respect but Gaborik is fifty times the teamate and all around player to be clear.

Also, his partner in crime Van Riemsdyk is another Douchebag. I read where those two morons were the root cause of the US team losing in the Olympics. They completely ruined that team.

Then there's Phaneuf and his contract, which is shtty by any metric. Not the of which he isnt very good.

There's a ton of work to be done there. If I was him gut the roster and do it like JE says. The homegrown guys they have now are meh squared. I suppose this is a great draft to start the process.

Detroit has some of the best scouting in the league and drafts fantastically every freaking year. I attribute that to the teams success way more than a coach. It's a well run franchise.

Agreed, but look at the coaches who have come through under Babcock. He gets a lot of credit for Detroit's success, and his game day coaching is superb.

I've got Jack freaking Capuano as a coach. Mike Babcock might as well be Jack Adams as far as I'm concerned.

I'm happy with Maurice at a reasonable salary.

Babcock is legit, but not at that price.

He's got a fat, long contract's worth of time.  I don't think anyone expects a thing in the next few years.  I meant that if he brought a Cup to Toronto eventually he's a God.  It's like winning the Super Bowl as coach of the Jets only MUCH bigger.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You really don't understand Toronto.

Trust me, they're going to be asking questions before the end of next season if it looks like the Leafs might not make the playoffs. I have never seen an environment like this surrounding any team in any sport anywhere. The expectation is ridiculous.

Apparently the Sabres thought they had Babcock locked up, and went as far as scheduling a news conference 2 days ago.  lol

The Sabres offered the same money that Toronto signed Babcock for.

Buffalo got Antoine Winfield'd.
