I find it odd that he would devalue what is actually his greatest work so much. To start out with such a rich and powerful story and then shove it on the back burner seems incongruous with the artist he is.

Honestly it just seems like he's having trouble finishing the story and filling in everything that needs to happen before the conclusion.

I can see that. Maybe a combination of that and some added pressure to deliver a more satisfying conclusion that D&D failed to accomplish so spectacularly.
